Everyone wants to sing without tensing up... To be free to sing what we're hearing in our heads. Yet often times, the pursuit of tension-free singing causes more tension! In this lesson, I'm going to show you how to hone in on ONLY the muscles you need for a specific task while letting other, ancillary muscles rest. That's only the beginning though :) Let's look at regular life muscle usage first and then tie that into our singing!

I've been taking Chris's vocal course and I highly recommend it.
I work as an English teacher (all that means is that I'm read up on educational literature), and I can tell that, educationally speaking, he's far more thorough and specific than most vocal teachers out there, and whether its intuitive for him or he's deliberately studied, he follows good teaching practice.
This video here is another good example but he goes into tons more detail in his course. Check it out; you won't regret it!

This is actually 100% effective especially for males. I strengthen-train as part of my lifestyle and regulart squat & deadlift around twice my bodyweight. Unlike heavy compound movements such as squat and deadlift, singing does not need the full body to contract. Singing is more akin to an isolation exercise such as crunch or lateral raise or fly where if the wrong muscles were used, the muscle that is supposed to work won't strengthen.

I find alot of my personal tension comes from self-consciousness, especially when practicing in an apartment. I find playing metal / music on my phone and placing it near the door helps ease that anxiety a ton when practicing. It's as if it disengages the thought that I need to practice quietly to avoid being embarassed. And even though it doesn't fully mask the sound, it does wonders for tension relief

Managers of the Atlantic Records told Blitz to change his way of singing otherwise he'd lose his voice forever. He changed it and since the 4th album he's sounded more like Brian Johnson of AC/DC. Just more aggressive. But on the first three records he was doing something dangerous to his voice but what?

When screaming my neck always gets tense after a while and contributes to migraines that discouraged me from practicing regularly. Friday's I'm driving a lot for work and, naturally, I'm singing along to what I've brought with me that day. Lately I'm hooked on the new Bring me the Horizon material and I noticed how I get through the first half (~Track 4 - Obey) and then nothing works anymore. It's all within my register but really on the upper end. So doing the parts seated is quite the challenge.
My Falsechord technique has been precisely honed over years but after properly (very loose use of that word here haha) singing along I can't seem to get a good growl, or any growl for that matter, out of me for the next 30 or so minutes. It's all down to tension in parts that don't need to be involved.
I know who's gonna pay more attention to the lower parts of my neck next friday

  • @powerstation0872
    @powerstation0872 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I realized a long time ago that tension comes from improper support, and unconscious fear. You need to fix your support before even thinking about anything else. You need to train your unconscious mind to trust that your support muscles can support your voice, without your neck, throat, and jaw getting involved. Cuz all that's really going on is you don't have proper support down as muscle memory, and so your body is used to trying to support your voice with your throat and jaw. Which, as we all know, has the opposite effect in the end.
For me, figuring out support helped the most with tension. Proper, adequate support has the natural side effect of relieving tension. Then once you have your support dialed in, and you still have tension issues, THEN you can start looking at other methods. Just my personal experience, anyway. Not everyone will have the same experience.

learning to sing is like learning an instrument. It takes years to master it. I am about to make small successes but sometimes it's a bit frustrating but it's part of the learning process. I also guess that I have to make a bit longer warm up focussing on breath support because I still involve my neck while trying harder stuff.

It’s funny talking about the parallels with lifting weights. I was going to mention that I’ve been really doing so much better with keeping my mind on my vocal cord tension and working it away really well. And I thought about it while I was playing guitar and I’ve been playing guitar with about 40% less tension. For the longest time I used to use a fist or double fingers because my picking pointer finger would just get crushed by my thumb because I would attack so hard playing fast death metal and stuff like that. In my finger would hurt as well as my picking shoulder. So I realized that I really should pick way way way lighter especially playing shredding stuff sweep arpeggios and stuff. Anyway applying your lessons has been helping me in multiple ways.

I just wanna throw this out there for those that struggle with breathing.
I just recently found out I have a severe case of hypothyroidism and there are many symptoms that can come with that. I started taking medication for it and a week later I realize I couldn’t breathe right because of my thyroid.
Idk how it works, but it’s one of the symptoms I was having and I had no idea what the problem was until now. I literally had to constantly think of breathing and how to breathe because the air didn’t want to go in. It felt like I was always breathing through a toothpick.
There may be other causes for breathing difficulties, but the thyroid is definitely one of them. Everyone’s different, so if you have trouble breathing at all then you should bring it up to a doctor.

I love how you explain everything! Thanks!
I have a question. I'm a woman. I'm mezzosoprano. Yesterday, last night, my sisters and me were sending videos of us singing different songs, because, due to the virus problem, we couldn't be together. It was great fun.
The question is that I sang different songs, like ROCK AND ROLL of LED ZEPPELIN. When I sing this kind of songs, I have to change the way I sing very much. I sound completely different. This song, for example, needs you to sing loud. I tried to sing it with the diaphragm to give strength and power to the voice. But I realized that I had to change something to avoid sounding lyric. So I took the air to the top of the head. I needed to use the "maschera" but in a different way. I noticed that it was quite nasal.
    The result was great.
My intention wasn't trying to imitate Robert Plant's voice, but I ended singing like him.
So, what's your advice for women to sing rock heavy metal?

    • @chrisliepe

I've been a singer for a long time and I have long struggled with "killing my voice" and I actually commented on a previous video talking about my battle with vocal fatigue and how I feel I haven't progressed in years... But watching Chris help so many people find different ways to do things basically told me "Daniel you can sing you don't suck just figure something out just experiment like he does there's always a work around" so I did that and my confidence level is really up there, so much that now I got a gig at hard times cafe and you know what I know my performance isn't gonna be 100% perfect, I'm gonna crack and make funny noises, but hey sometimes it's more than being a perfect singer, it's just having an open heart for music because that's more real than anything, regardless if you sound like a dying cow... If your audience sees the passion inside you , then you'll have a whole bar of dying cows singing together in unison and that's the beauty of it .... that's what makes you an entertainer ... An inspiration.. a Chris Liepe 🤟

Challenge accepted. My weights have been gathering dust for way too long... Its the perfect excuse, though I'm worried I'll total myself like I used to :)
I know many people do excercise for results, but I actually enjoy the adrenaline of properly warming then pushing the envelope hard (to which ever level of fitness I have at the time)
The means is a good end in itself. Might also help with energy and both relaxation and aggression (just picturing after and during workout respectively)
Man cant wait for the shift to end. Thanks Liepe, awesome as usual !!!

I always overuse my neck muscles because I have a natural tendency to tense them so I have to constantly roll my shoulders back and relax my neck (in general but especially while working out)

You are adding to much tension in your mix and it's tiring it out
Use a light mix but vibration it above your upper lip and slightly below the nose and (I find that) the note becomes much more resonant
Really engage your diaphragm and intercostals (support) while resonanting in the face and sing (exhale) while imagining you are still inhaling (inhalare de voce) ((tricky but FEELS amazingly effortless once you dial it in))

It's a good example for singing, but for strength training you don't wanna be relaxed in your whole body, firing up your neurological system makes you recruit more muscle fibers and thus generate more hypertrophy, as long as that extra effort you are making isn't taking away from the actual muscles you're trying to work
