I came back just to tell you how revolutionary this single lesson was for me. I'm entirely self-taught so I started distorting years ago by destroying my throat 😅 I eventually figured out how to compress in the diaphragm instead, but your description of doing it in the nasal area just made something click, and now I suddenly have immensely more control over not only distortion and compression but my voice as a whole, and I don't have to yell and scream to sing Audioslave songs anymore 😄 Thank you so much!!
So glad you’re finally making tutorials!! I’ve been watching you for years and it’s fascinating watching you talk about this stuff. Also you are a funny dude. Cheers man hope to see more soon
Very encouraging! I like how you explain the spaces to be very small but will open up with practice. Its hard to know you are on the right track when it doesnt feel usable at first.. but we have to keep it it. Thanks for these lessons!
Thank you very much for such a detailed breakdown. You are the only one here on youtube who talks about these things like: false folds distortion is not good with mixed voice, and soft palate distortion is eye-opening I never heard about it before. I thought I found it and was happy for a week until I realized that I was constantly failing your "can you rise from the note?" check. I re-watched the video a few times and I think I found that placement now, it's not strong at all and I can't really go above my bridge with it easily (like I lose that grit as I go higher). But it doesn't require any pushing or support, just better coordination to keep it consistent. I will give it a few weeks to develop, cause it feels just like mixed voice now, meaning you find, but it's weird and not really useable, but as long as it's relaxed I think it will grow over time.
That's a brilliant lesson. The last exercise with mixed distortion sounds very similar to high distorted voice of Chris Cornell 😊 keep it up man your lessons are really helpful for those of us who want to sound more aggressive when singing rock 🤘
Algorithms aren't all bad!! A couple "voice lessons" searches and you showed up Sterling! I've always been a car star singer (as we all are😉). I knew I needed some fundamentals after trying to match my buddy/keyboard player note for note on jam night. I lost my voice for a bit so I figured I must be doing something wrong!! He's been singing and playing for years and didn't lose his voice. Thanks for the content! Cheers from New Brunswick, Canada
Which distortion do you use on the chorus for Rooster and Man in a Box by AIC? would it be the last one demonstrated in your video? Very informative video btw. Absolutely love that cover of Rooster you did years ago.
Hey, is singing with vocal fry safe long term? I can’t seem to get a clear answer whether it’s good from a vocal health perspective, I’ve managed to imitate some 70s soul singers by starting with a low pitch less fry and then adding that on top of a note and get that close sort of rasp in my lower range but a little hesitant to go higher as I’ve heard it can wreck your voice any thoughts? cheers
Well it’s hard to diagnose through a comment but I would imagine you’ve found a lower distortion or compression that’s limiting your range. This is the first distortion I found. Sounded very different than my typical voice as well.
Hey! What about the distortion that happens right on the break between head and chest voice? I always thought those were the false chords, but is it actually the thrid one?
@@SterlingRJackson I was one of 213 comments on his last video and made a “subscriber requested calibration“ that he check out your channel & do a video with you. 🤞 why don’t you audition for the voice? I mean, it is what you do 😀
I am not a fan of this competition singing shows and I don’t support them. They reached out to me and asked me to perform and I wrote back and told them what I thought of their show haha. Just trying to follow my heart
Hey Jeremy. In my opinion, no, that’s not the case. Keep in mind, many of these things I teach took me years to get better at. While it seems as though one could simply follow along and do this stuff, everyone figures this stuff out at a different pace. Many of these coordinations took me months to get working as well when I was first learning them.
@@Jeremy-hx7zjahh I get ya. Fry is weirdly about relaxing in one place and compressing a bit in another. You’ll get there. Sometimes it happens from weird “aha” moments.
Burn? Ha. Not entirely sure that’s good. Hard to tell through a comment. Pain or burning is usually a sign that things aren’t working well but there is friction and vibration going on so things might be different and those sensations might not be typical things one is used to feeling.
Sounds like you didn't get very far into the video. He discusses more than one way to get distortion. The first one he doesn't do often. But there are two others. The third is the one he uses the most often.
I am one of the people you just unlocked the feeling for me. Bless you, handsome stranger

Very kind Gio. Thanks 😊
This is THE single best video on vocal distortion I have seen. And I do think I have seen them all :)
That’s kind. 😊

what you're calling fry is also mostly a false chord distortion

@9:27 I always practice warming up high.
Great info and demonstration.
Such a great lesson, thanks alot!

When i try My distortion with vocal compression i don't feel any sort of pain, but my range feels limited... What should i do?

Dude your speaking voice is like Chris Cornell's
Is it? Ha. 😊

Man, the hardest part about experimentation is the neighbors.
Do you know Dovydas ? He is a TH-camr in your area. You guys should do a Caleb video
Interesting. He has a huge following. Not always easy to contact people with huge followings.
@@SterlingRJackson I’m going to make a comment on his videos then to suggest the same to him!!! 😀

Is it possible that i might be physically incapable of producing a fry scream? I cannot make my voice break up like that.

😮 ahgghhhhaaggghhhhaaaaaahhhh
is my throat supposed to burn when I do the vocal fry exercises? I'm not sure if I'm doing them right...

It's really fucking frustrating I can't find my raspy, I can do the second in the video but the first one is making me crazy
The vocal fry one? Start small. I’m sure you’ll get there at some point. 😊
I thought bro was wearing a beanie first but its actually his hair
Yes bro. Yes
Guy sounds a little like Joe DeRosa
I would not take advice about extreme vocals from the dude who literally says he is not focusin on the subject he is trying to teach.
What?
