    Just thought I'd mention for anyone else doing this job, you can confirm the gear position of the new transmission by manually moving the change arm with your hand, before installation. The change arm is the part that Frank is working with @ 19:30, or Section 3, page 45, part #27 in the service manual I've linked to below.
    1st gear is closest to the curved base of the transmission, then one click up to second and another to third. The transmission I installed already had the change arm connected and there was a punch mark on the surface of the change arm that aligned with a notch on the tip of the spline.
    If yours doesn't have these marks, the top edge of the change arm is about 2mm from the closest bolt housing on the transmission case when it's in 1st gear, and as Frank mentioned @ 19:34, in second gear the change arm lines up with the empty bolt hole he pointed to.
    I found that when installing the cable with the spring, it was easy enough to position the spring without the need of any compression tool or cable ties. After installing the cable tip, place the spring on the raised locator pins first, then use your thumbs to compress it and push the top into place. I did this before installing the transmission.
    I also found that it was easy enough to remove the transmission with the cables in-place (obviously disconnected from the handle end first), and connect the cables to the new tranny before installing it.
    The drive shaft can also be removed after removing the old transmission. That way you don't have to fiddle around doing it inside the mower.
    The spline will slide out of it's connecting tube as you rotate the transmission out from the frame.
    After attaching the drive shaft and cables to the new transmission, make sure you feed the cables through first and slide the driveshaft spline back into the connecting tube as you position the transmission/axle into place.
    It's also a good idea to drain the fuel and oil before tipping your mower over.
    To remove the wheels, I raised the rear of the deck using a couple of blocks of wood, then layed the mower on it's side (fuel tank side down) and worked on it that way.
    I also had to use the cable mounting bracket and change arm from the old transmission, as the new parts weren't crafted well, creating an angle that caused the cable to rub on the threaded housing as it slid in and out of the sheath. I'm guessing the transmission supplied was aftermarket.
    The service manual suggests it's a 1.5 hour job but it took me three hours including setting everthing up, pressure washing the mower first (it was full of mud that smelled like a cow paddock), draining the fluids, replacing the transmission, replacing a nut that was missing from the handle (where it collapses - was cable tied), cleaning the spark plug, replacing the fluids, a few cable ties for cable managment, testing the mower and packing everything away.
    It was a good way to spend a Sunday arvo with a couple of cold beers. Oh ... and I'm getting paid $200 for it :)

      Its good to see a summary from a real mechanic. I did mention draining fuel oil and disconnect the spark plug. I also mentioned there are better sequences to do the job. I have to believe you could install the spring just by compressing with your fingers, but I would very much like to see it done. That spring was a big problem for me.

    Hi Matie your pretty good you know. you helped me out. Ive got a little bit more of problem. Changed my clutch cable turned it on and works but press the clutch in, push forward and sounds really bad. It was originally a broken clutch cable, nothing else. I have a funny feeling I haven't put the back protection plate to the gear box in properly? might be hitting on something. have to check it out tomorrow.

      @robpeterson8795 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, That rear inspection/ protection plate is so hard to put back. I am not sure if I slipped the gear box pin that slips into the back plate properly as the height adjuster only goes half way now???

    • @frankkolmann4801
      @frankkolmann4801  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robpeterson8795 Yep. There is a pin goes in a slot on the cover plate. You need to be careful to get the pin in the slot when putting the plate back. You need to take off the wheeles, axel , and plates then reassemble. The plates go back fairly easily, you cant put the plates back properly unless the axel is removed. Its at 26:27.

    Hi, frank, I am from Sydney as well! I want to ask you when the engine is off and you engage the drive clutch, can the rear wheel moves forward? When engage drive clutch, can the rear wheel moves backwards?

    • @frankkolmann4801

      Forwards yes backwards no. Best you have 2 mowers, one is you backup. When one fails you still can do jobs. Also you can do checks on your working mower yourself and it is good to have a machine you can reference.

    I find that most homeowners are NOT willing to have the transmission replaced due to high cost of junk system made by Honda.
    Good luck if you can fix a wheel locked up in under 3 hours.

    • @frankkolmann4801
      @frankkolmann4801  ปีที่แล้ว

      Never said it was fast. I guess thats why the dealers charge so much. I do all my maintenance myself. At least with mowers it is possible to do your own maintenance. I have learnt that you need to dissemble and clean the wheets every 6 months. Yearly you need to replace the plugs cables wheels and starter cords. Still things break. I have had welds break in various places. I have had wheels come off , and run over, because I did not tighten properly. Without comprehensive maintenance a mower used every day lasts about 2 years. With the maintenance it is about 5 years. Sitll things happen that scrap a mower immediately, like twisting the head off a bolt, especially steel boths in alloy chassis.
      I used to maintain my cars myself. Then cars got so complex you cannot trust that even a mechanic can repair it properly. I watch Rainman Rays Repairs channel. I find it very interesting as to how complex it is to maintain todays cars. Before Ray got his own place he was hasseled and fired by his bosses. Rays subscribers suggested he get his own repair garage, which he did. But I am digressing.

      @@frankkolmann4801 ATG has informed Honda about the transmission system problem but done nothing.
      Like Husqvarna, Honda is out of the lawnmower business.
      You don't buy one of the most expensive mowers to have transmission /or wheel locked up after 3 years!
      You don't have to replace yearly on cable/plug/cord by using dialectical grease.
      You can spray PAM (yes, that's cooking oil) or lube spray under mower before cutting.
      ATG & I recommend to buy Bluedriver, so car shops won't rip you off or buying a used car or fix your car.

      @@angelisone I guess there is a difference between a professional mower guy using a mower 8 hours a day 6 days a week versus a home owner using a mower , at most, once a week. I had a lawn mowing business that is why I mentioned the maintenance intervals. Using any mower 8 hours a day every day will wear out parts the amount of dirt and dust raised requires daily cleaning no matter how much oil you spray underneath on the blades. The Honda mower is one of the toughest machines. Victa made good tough mowers then they got bought by Briggs , I think, and the mowers started to have annoying problem, like the catcher falling off, in fact I perferred the 2 stroke Victa movers, but Victa at the time did not have a self propelled mower. A professional mower using a mower 8 hours a day every day must have a self propelled machine. Do you have a recommendation for a good quality powerful self propelled mower ? A professional will pay top dollar for a reliable prwerful self propelled mower.

      @@frankkolmann4801 Many running a landscaping business failed on profits because they don't cleanup after the day of work. And why on earth the workers care if they are making less than $100/day for 12 hours.
      Some get much less than $100.00 (£80) because they don't have paper or just got in or out of prison.
      All mowers are only good for 3 years. That's based on running 12 hours a day.
      For small basic homes & townhomes, we like using battery powered mowers. But the battery is expensive that many do not buy. Lucky we get them free.
      Zero turn mowers are good, but it can't get through home's gate.
      Husqvarna, Lastec & Toro. Honda & Husqvarna are no longer in the small lawnmower business.
      Lastec WZ1000, we have 3. This cost more than most vehicles!
      TORO Timemaster 30" lawn mower, staff like this & speed & cut time due to 30 vs 22" blade.
