    That's basically the load I carry in my .32 Long revolvers (usually my S&W 30-1 snubbie). My stash were made by a now sadly defunct company. Glad to see BB has picked up the mantle. Those 115 grain hard cast lead flatpoints (boy ain't that a mouthful?) do really well. In water jugs I shot many years ago, they exited the first jug sideways and every jug thereafter that they penetrated they did so sideways. To me a yawing, long bullet like that presents more surface area than an expanded JHP. I always interpreted that penetration is definitely there but not way overboard. Glad to see your tests confirm this. As my old stash is dwinding down I think I need to get my hands on some of that Buffalo Bore ammo soon.
    As for the .380, I'll never get why people say the .380 is weak. Sure, it's not a 9x19 or such, but it's not a .25, either. I probably carry a .380 more than anything (while I still have them, I like the old hydra-shoks only because they cut such a sharp hole almost caliber wide so even if they don't open they should do well).
    Anyway, I'm long-winded again. As always, great video!

    I agree the .32 had perfect penetration. You have to give up something with lower power rounds, and I doubt if any hollow point will expand at this low velocity. This would be your best choice for self defense.

    • @Predalien195
      @Predalien195 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      .32 Wadcutters do quite well for penetration and the softer lead sometimes does expand a bit. But yes, pretty much no .32 S&W Long JHP expands below the 900 FPS range. Hard casts like these and wadcutters really are quite nice.

      My 10th anniversary lcp had some issues originally. Sent it in to Ruger, they had it back to me in 4 days. New slide, extractor. No issues since. I carry the underwood +p hardcast in it when I edc it. It is very powerful, reliable, accurate. I honestly think based on the tests I’ve seen of it and seen in person it would 100% work on black bear with a head shot. I wouldn’t use it for that and would carry my larger pistols like my 2.0 10mm or one of my revolvers in bear country. But if you’re just trail hiking etc it’s a lot better than what people think.

It’s for my wife to carry as a woods gun, and while it may not stop a bear with one shot it’ll sure give it pause after five or six hits. I think George Patton carried a .380 as a backup gun, and Bad Leroy Brown had a .32 gun in his pocket for fun and a razor in his shoe. And they were tough guys.

    • @troy9477
      @troy9477 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patton reputedly had a Colt 1903 in 32 ACP. The US Army used to issue the 32 and later the 1908 380 to general officers kwhen they got their first star) with a calfskin belt and holster. They kept them when they retired. That was done until the 60's i think. And of course Patton's main handguns were a Colt SAA (nickel and engraved i think) and an S&W 357 magnum (pre Model 27). Both with ivory grips.

    Smallest .32 S&W Long gun I have is an old H&R top break. It's a 5 shot .32 S&W Long with a 2 inch barrel. Sometimes it's my go to gun for when I'm dressed up and have little space to carry anything larger. I usually keep it loaded with wadcutters for self defense when it's in play but these Hard Casts would make an excellent second choice for me. Would also work well for dispatching small game in a snub nose revolver provided you can hit the target. For large animals it wouldn't do much but perhaps a head shot on something like a white tail could do the job. Would be just fine for dispatching wounded animals I'd think.

    Interesting idea. The 32 has long been known for surprisingly good penetration. This does look almost ideal. I wonder if a slightly softer bullet would flatten out a bit and penetrate say 12-14". That would be good too. I think i really want an LCR in 327 for the versatility you have demonstrated. Especially with the ammo shortages, it could be quite useful. Buffalo Bore gets creative in their loads. I think they have similar loads in both 32 H&R and 327, faster and faster, which should be quite useful.

    Its always surprising what bullets will and won't go through. I made a bullet stop that was mostly just old papers and binders from my job that were now all useless and needed to be burnt. It was about 24 inches thick and backed with a steel plate. I shot some pellet guns and 22s into it, they made it a couple inches in, but nothing crazy. So I shot some 32s out of the ole skorpion and they made it nearly a foot or so. Then I shot some 90gr lee cast 32 longs and I would hear the ding of the steel plate nearly every time. The bullets looked like I could reload them again, almost no deformation. Hard cast lead is no joke.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would like to get a .22 pistol again, as I used to have a Ruger 22/45. I honestly think if someone is going to .22 LR, I have the total opposite opinion of most saying "oh you need a revolver because ammo reliability". But the truth is, if you carry CCI ammo in a Ruger 22/45 or similar gun, it won't jam, as I used to go through 500 round bricks of CCI in the one I used to have with no jams. But the reason I say quality semi auto over revolver is I used to shoot the whole magazine in headshots without missing. I could probably shoot 2 head shots with a 9mm shooting fast and the rest misses. But when you think about handgun self defense in general it always comes down to the double tap, if does not work then head shot. Well, with a reliable and accurate semi auto .22 you can double tap and then if not working, land the other 8 in the head. Not ideal for general self defense, but ideal for home defense, mass shooter stoppage etc.

(Sig Sauer P238-HD/.380 & Charter Arms .357 MAG PUG.) I highly recommend you pick up a Charter Arms revolver Sam. Lifetime warranty & a real sturdy shooter for the money. Thanks for dusting off this review & getting it posted.

    Thanks Sam. Agree with you these could probably get you out of a jam but I would surely prefer something better. You might get lucky and stop a black bear with one of these if you hit them in a perfect spot, but I think more than likely the bear would get to the shooter before he died. But again I don't really know and hope I don't have to find out.

      .357 Magnum and 9mm are still probably the best do it all guns. Not much you can't do with them and 9mm is that one semi auto caliber that is near 100% reliable in most pistols.

    I'm not being a smart ass I promise. I find this interesting. Check it out. The gun community talks a lot about shooting black bears with pistols. In the southeastern U.S. there have only been two documented cases of fatalities by black bears in history. In the entirety of North America only 67 fatalities since 1900. That's half a death per year average. Which puts chances at 1 in 2.1 million. So many people however worry about it. I live in North GA. No recorded black bear attacks in history. I have hunted bears since I was about 8...so 30 years. Trust me when I say we are way more dangerous to them than us. As far as pistols go in my immediate family. Seen bears killed with 45 colt, 40s&w, and 44 special. A well placed shot is key as usual. I prefer a shotgun in a bear fight...lol. Thanks Sam.

    I just ordered some of the .32 long buffalo bore that you are using in this video. It's not for dangerous game though. It's for my wife for self defense because she is very small and can't handle a lot of recoil. I actually got some of the +P .380 buffalo bore as well. But then I read my lcp2 manual and it says do not shoot +P out of it. So im glad I didn't shoot it yet, and i'm gonna have to try to sell it now. But I also have the .32 long wadcutter buffalo bore that is recessed. Which round would you choose for self defense between the one in this video and that one?

  • @franklinAll8735
    @franklinAll8735 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think these are not suitable against medium or bigger animals. Even though penetration in gel is there, the wound track is minimal and the animal would bleed out and die prrsumably eben hours after hit. That is enough time to rip shooter apart.

    • @rob.3575
      @rob.3575 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. For something like a black bear I wouldn't want anything less than a .357mag. Against a large aggressive dog,I think both of these loads would do the trick.

    • @franklinAll8735
      @franklinAll8735 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rob.3575 yep, I wouldn't feel comfortable with that even against a boar or cougar, let alone a bear. For the latter, 44 mag is the least I would consider acceptable. You need to stop that bear right in his tracks or it will rip you apart. I've seen a video where female bear got a 00 buck shotgun blast to the side and was only knocked down for a while to continue charging with twice the rage seconds later. 44 mag is minimum for me.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Possibly. But consider this; I did a test yesterday where I tested overpenetration and if it's a thing. I used my bologna packs and gel, and found that the gel was a lot more resistant to a lot of things than I previously thought. Like, I had bologna/MDF then gel then more MDF and was astonished. Long story short, I think this non expanding ammo would go much deeper in a real animal than common thought might say.

  • @looseballs1966

      Truth be told, the bears that this would be good for are black bears, and anything will make them leave you alone, even a bb gun hit. Against a brown bear I think I would do everything I could do to make sure I don't have to shoot.

    is there any specific reason why a full power FMJ in either of these calibers is insufficient for this purpose?
    97 grain Fiocchi FMJ in .32 Long
    95 grain Federal American Eagle in .380 ACP
    Probably going to be in the same ball park.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not really extensively tested those. But I did run some .380 FMJ today and it would equate to about the same penetration as this .380. I think probably the difference is one, the FMJ will deform more against bone, and two the FMJ is getting close to max in an LCP as where I think the Buffalo VS an FMJ in a longer barrel, the Buffalo Bore would have more power. Long story short, in the LCP both this and an FMJ are close.

    • @filianablanxart8305
      @filianablanxart8305 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      FMJ isn't typical in .32 S&W Long . The traditional loads are 98 Lead Round Nose , and 100gr Lead ( full) Wadcutters , primarily intended for Olympic style target pistols . Out of typical revolvers perform about the same , with the wadcutters getting the theoretical nod for the shape .
      Before the introduction of .32Mag , many loading manuals had seperate data for .32Long * Strong Solid Frame Revolvers * . These loads would essentially duplicate .32Mag factory loads .
      A 90-100 cast SWC @ actual 850fps would markedly out perform either flavor of factory load .

      The major difference is that FMJ or LRN can deform upon impact causing limited penetration either by mushrooming or tumbling. The hard cast ammo here is not just harder overall, but have flat noses. This prevents both mushrooming and tumbling which will cause deeper penetration than FMJ or LRN.
