Picked a police positive made in 1919 chambered in 32 s&w long, a few months back at a pawn shop, and it's my favorite gun to shoot after some TLC! I even got a holster for it and carry it from time to time!
I definitely would cop a .32 hr magnum wit barrel no shorter then several inches , sum this bs they got goin on has me clueles but yes there much to observe and soak up so gar this year
My father carried a 32 SW for 30 years. It handled everything he needed. He had bigger calibers, but always carried the 32. My brother still has it. Thanks for the video.
My grandfather always wanted his .32 S&W Long for home defense over a .38 and I could never figure out why. That was in my days of carrying a 6” .41 Mag in a shoulder holster, so yes I was very young lol. Now that I’ve crested 60 I understand. Arthritic hands, sick of heavy recoil, bad hearing, and looking for an EDC gun that doesn’t weigh 2 1/2 lbs. My EDC is now an Excam .25 ACP that is 100% reliable and my quick grab gun at home is Papa’s old .32 S&W Long Hand Ejector loaded with full wadcutters. I also have two .38 snubs on tap as well as a .45 ACP, but now I do indeed understand where he was coming from. Rest in peace Papa, you were a wise man. Another great video Sam, keep ‘‘em coming. 👍
.32 S&W Long was well known to be a very accurate shooting cartridge. The 6” K-32 was famous for being amazingly accurate, and careful handloading enhances the accuracy even more.

What became the master piece, then model 14, indeed was offered in 32..I collect model 14s, and a prewar K38 target in 32, only 96 have surfaced, The Post war pre model 32 master piece,only couple thou made.SIDE NOTE;: PREWAR Colt Officers Model Target revolver ALSO offered in 32 from 1931 until the war. A holly grail for Colt Collectors..Gotta mean great cartridge if the Big 2 ,BOTH offered it in thier premium target guns 👍😁
Absolutely, you gotta hit before the arguaments about 'stopping power' starts. Hell, if you hit three of three, there might not ever be an arguament, you've 'sorted it' ! Pax dude.
Results are about as expected. That Fiocchi FMJ load in .32 S&W Long is my go to for the cartridge when used in defensive applications as well as a good target load. I do sometimes use wadcutters over it though in snub nose barrels but in most my revolvers in .32 calibers being 3 inch or longer, the FMJ works just fine and produces similar results. Definitely one of my favorite cartridges and loads for the caliber. I've actually had some people come into my work looking for .32 caliber revolvers referencing your videos as cited reasons behind wanting one. Alas, my work doesn't really carry the .32 caliber revolvers though.
Fun test! I love how they say a snub is worthless beyond card table distances. You sunk that myth. There are .38 loads that do expand well so I would use RN as a last resort. The .32 did not suffer from overpenetration so this would work as expansion is unlikely anyway.
Your double action skills are most impressive. Another good video teaching us all that taking time to look at it instead of the next biggest fast gun that holds a box of ammo. Like wad previously stated them older guys knew more than we give them credit for Thanks Sam
A friend came by 15 years ago and said here you can have these and gave me two boxes of 327 fed magnum. He had gone by cabelas and told clerk gimme couple boxes of 357 and gave him wrong ammo so I bought a ruger sp101 in 327 fed magnum. I cameacross a youtube by mcarbo for spring and shim kit, I followed instuctions on youtube and polished action and installed lighter spring and shims for trigger and hammer. it comp[etely changed performance to butter smooth with excellent trigger, then bought thousad rounds of 327 ammo because I knew shortages coming up. It will chamber and shoot 32 acp also because its semi rimmed. I also changed grip to hand filling wood target style, now have superfly 6 shot revolver that can handle any 32 caliber. Be safe and have fun. It is 3inch barrel and looks like scaled down gp100. Perfection!
The 3" SP101 is what the .327 was designed from, so you can't beat that. My LCR won't shoot .32 ACP correctly, I mean it can sort of shoot it but I get a 30% ignition rate as the rims are too thin to get hard primer strikes.
@@GunSamIs that true? I was under the impression the 327 originated in the Single Six, and that is why you're limited to what is essentially 22 WMR cartridge length with factory ammo, instead of the much more reasonable 357 length.
Lucky Gunner says the .32 S&W long is the best choice for a snub nose. Charles Bronson proved that in "Death Wish." Bad Bad Leroy Brown kept a .32 gun in his pocket for fun.
I'm not sure ol' Leroy Brown is the best example of the effectiveness of the .32 caliber... especially given how he ended up. In fact, he seems to be good evidence of what a determined fellow with a knife can do. lol "Leroy looked like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple'a pieces gone." 😱😱😱😁😆😜

When I was first getting into revolvers I did as much reading as I could and quite a few writers said that the 38 Special FMJ or LRN is lousy and you would be better off with a 32 S&W Long wadcutter. It definately dumps more of its energy in less time through the target.

Seeing this now two-year-old video mere weeks after I bought a Charter Arms Undercoverette in .32 H&R Magnum to be a more concealable EDC for summer attire. I learned of the .32 through the magic of TH-cam suggesting I watch a Lucky Gunner video on the caliber. My experience with a Smith & Wesson Airweight in .38 Spl was not horrible, but the felt recoil was much stronger than my usual EDC (CZ PCR), and it wasn't comfortable. I really hoped I wouldn't hate myself for getting the .32, and so far I'm pretty happy with the gun. Most of the rounds I've sent downrange so far have been .32 S&W Long, but I've run a box of H&R Magnums through the thing, and while I can certainly feel the difference in the recoil, the Magnum rounds are very manageable for quick return to point of aim. Getting a decent grip on this little wheel gun is much easier than on things like the M&P Shield 9 that's probably going to be a "safe queen" now that I have a more concealable piece that I can get a better grip on.
The name .32 H&R Magnum is truly deceptive. It's in no way a magnum, so it should be pretty easy to shoot. Most handgun magnum rounds are in the vicinity of 35,000 to 60,000 PSI pressure in addition to a lot of powder. The .32 H&R Magnum is somewhere around 21,000 PSI if I recall (.38 Special+P maxes at 20,000) and with less powder than .38 Special.
Interesting. The accuracy on the 32 is very impressive. Maybe our grandfathers knew some things we do not? The 130 FMJ 38 is the old USAF security police service load, rated at about 820 fps in a 4" barrel. I do not know why they felt the need for ball ammo, since they were not engaged in land warfare, but it makes good practice ammo. Nice to see that it tumbles as well. I have shot a lot of the Win USA version, but mot much of the Federal. Fiocchi's 32 ammo has a good rep- well desrved, it would seem.
Likely had a lot to do with the Hague Convention stating no nation signed on can use hollow point, soft point, or any other ammunition easily designed to expand in human bodies in warfare.

Let's say you shoot that 32 SW long in self defense mode with no hearing protection.....when the cops arrive you are going to be able to hear what they are saying... LOL Nobody even takes into consideration the report of a round. That you will not have hearing protection on... I've forgot my ears a couple times at the range and if it's a 9mm it is shocking how loud it is. Never wore hearing protection out hunting with a 12 GA shotgun as it's loud, but the barrel sends the sound down range. Using a shotgun in the house for self protection is going to leave one hearing impaired for hours. Same for using an AR15.... that little Ruger in 327mag shooting 32 long is fun, easy, and quiet. 6 rounds with deadly accuracy... and concealable.
I've shot a lot of stuff without hearing protection. It's not only pressure but also overall power that matters. Like .357 Mag muffles the hearing for a few hours, as where 9mm is more like a few minutes. The .38 and .32 are like cap guns.
The .32 Long is featured many times in the Parker series by Richard Stark. Even some of the cops he encounters carried them. I’m seriously thinking about trading out my 442 for an older Smith or a Charter. Glad to see these comparisons!
I have been shooting my Ruger 357 3 inch gutter sight revolver with 38 Special and it shoots low. I have to tight the barrel up to be able to hit a bulls eye. My wife shots a Ruger 327 Fed Mag with 32 S&W Long and it is extremely accurate. I think that you just showed that the Ruger 327 Fed Mag is an under rated, but very accurate revolver with little to no recoil when shooting 32 S&W Long.
I own and shoot the .32 S&W long the most because I find, of all my revolvers, it is the easiest to shoot accurately multiple shots off the cuff at any distance. To me, if I have to use it for self-defense, I would rather hit what I am shooting multiple times than miss with more power. I really also don't care to kill someone, but would prefer to just disable an attacker. During the height of the wild west, mid to late 1800s, 3 out of 4 guns carried out west were not colt 1873s, as the old cowboy movies would have us believe, but small frame low powered calibers with .32 type ballistics. My favorite revolver, at the moment, is an 1896 S&W first model hand ejector in .32 S&W long that both looks and still shoots great. Love that gel test setup you have set up there. I always wanted to know what a head-to-head test between .38 special and .32 S&W long would show. I am glad to see what I have always felt, the inherent accuracy, shot after shot, of the smaller caliber, proven out. Yes, the .38 is more powerful, and why it triumphed over its smaller, older brother, but the little guy still lays the punches in more accurately, connecting far more times where it counts, the target!
A test that I thought I'd never see. I have a S&W J frame 38, snub, and a I frame 32, 3" barrel. President Teddy Roosevelt, I believe, said that he considered the 32 cal as the ideal police round. Both, non P rounds, are enjoyable to shoot and will put a hurt on the bad guy. It shows that you don't need to take your Porch grocery shopping when your VW will do just fine. Thank you.
Use wadcutters out of snub nosed revolvers for self defense. Easiest to shoot, plenty of penetration, and create lots of damage. Unless you can handle really hot +P stuff. True for a .32 or .38

Love how long it takes these slow rounds to reach 75 yards. lol I used to shoot plain jane old 158 lead 38s out of my 6 inch 686 at clay targets set up on the back stop at 100 yds. After some practice was hitting them 3 out of 6 shots. Off hand. Fun, and teaches you trigger control. But I was shooting single action. You shoot dam good DA my friend.
Sweet, now that I'm in my 60s, and my arthritis is more of an issue, that .32 is looking like a great little pocket gun. 17 ounces and six shots is do-able on days when my thumb joints feel like someone hit them with a hammer. Probably recoils less than my steel frame .357s loaded with 125 grain .38 specials. Thanks!
Yes, most .32 S&W Long even from this 17 OZ revolver feels like shooting a .22 LR, and if the gun were bigger like the Ruger SP101 3" .327 Federal revolver loaded with .32 W&W Long the recoil would be even less. I would say it's one of the best low recoil options out there, a bit more effective than .22 LR as I have done that comparison, I would say roughly as effective as .22 Mag and similar recoil, but the .22 Mag is usually in a revolver and rimfire revolvers have terrible trigger pulls, it will make arthritis be felt with it's 15-20 lb trigger. This .327 Ruger LCR has maybe a 7 lb trigger pull, just overall one of the best options for comfortable shooting.

I have an H&R #732 snub nose in .32 smith and wesson long and it is a lot of fun to shoot just ammo for it is so hard to find right now! it has proven very accurate shot after shot. I want a 357 so can shoot 38sp/38sp+P/357 would be next step up to me. I wonder how 32 auto and 380 auto compare to the 32 swl round. I am pretty surprised how close these 2 rounds compare. Her daughter a school teacher just sold it to me. I ecstatic ly happy!! I have smith19 glocks a colt or 2 and an a smith n wesson 32 long a colt police positive but something about h n r... my 7th total but 2nd in 32. True staurday night special. Tho i d say h n r was the BEST quality of all the considered to be "cheap" guns from pre polymer days. I was just updating on balisitcs for this cute lil ladies cart.. Still worthless but i love it I wud NEVER recomend anyone carry a 32!!! Seems you just tested the very .32 S&W long ammo I tend to carry; Fiocchi 97gr. FMJ. And given that I'm shooting it out of a 2-1/2 inch barrel, it might accidentally get close to that 800 fps. they advertise. yep. safe and effective follow up shots from .32 FMJs and .32 LRN. since the 9mm and .380 are not really known to be one hitter quitters anyways, it is actually better to carry a .32 that you can accurately rapid fire at close range.
@@americansuper-soldierjadav7234 - Well, when I was younger I liked .45acp, .357mag, and most of the "hot" rounds. But as I got older, I discovered I didn't need all the fuss 'n bother - not to mention the noise - that comes along with those calibers. I much prefer poking the holes in whatever's causing trouble as quietly as possible, these days, and not having my ears ringing and my hand buzzing for half a day afterwards. ...plus you can put more of those smaller rounds in the revolvers I prefer to carry.

Still, a .45 ACP or .357 in a small handgun makes more sense than a 9mm, because those hotter and bigger calibers are one hitter quitters vs. a serious threat. That .32 is a lot of easy shots and a lot of small holes. That .45 is a one hitter with one big hole. 9mm is in a weird middle ground where the follow ups aren't easy (unless you are using a full sized gun) and you can't count on a one hitter.
@@americansuper-soldierjadav7234 - i carried a 1911 Commander-sized gun for years, as well as a 2 inch .357 mag. Neither gave me any real advantage over what you've seen here in the video. Both were heavier than what I carry now, louder, and not the most efficient with the rounds they carried, though the Commander was close. And they don't usually carry as many rounds as their full-size counterparts. Also, just to further emphasize that smaller guns in bigger calibers is not always the way to go... my least-favorite gun was an Astra A-75 in .40 S&W that I owned for a while in the early '90s. The thing was heavy, hard to hit with, and generally unpleasant to shoot. I didn't keep it very long. And for what it's worth, after being both a soldier and a LEO, I've seen enough not to count on ANY handgun caliber for a "one-shot stop". Especially since making any size hole in the other person is just as likely to make them stop causing trouble as not. Especially if that hole is made in the right place. One way or the other, regardless of caliber, it's the person that gets a good solid hit on their opponent first, that will likely come out on top.
I recall from back when I had an H&R 32S&W long, the factory ammo was comically weak. But started handloading it and the situation turned around immediately. Have a lot of respect for the potential of the .32.
Great field accuracy Sam, especially considering you were using snubbies with 2" barrels and fixed sights. You have excellent revolver skills. With the ammo shortage being what it is there is not much choice but semi-wadcutter or wadcutter ammo would have performed even better in the ballistic gel tests. Keep up the fine work!
Great testing Sam! Excellent shooting. Both good contenders. You can shoot .32 S&W shorts and longs out of Nagant revolver in 7.62x38R. The problem is the cartridges bulge and hard to extract in a pinch. ♠️🎩☯️

Nice video. I too have wondered about the round nose 38 special ammunition. I’ve got 130gr and 158gr but never really considered them for self defense. I suppose the 158 possibly could penetrate further though and maybe over penetrate. The LCR’s are awesome guns. I have a 357 magnum version and mine is the “x” model so it has a hammer spur. But even with magnums the recoil is not terrible. Ruger really nailed it down with those guns IMO.

I think with +P he was more confident that hollowpoints would bloom and go deep enough, as I recall... About a year ago he did a video on .38 loads and I'd also look for that. The man himself, I wish him well...
I have the same Caldwell Chrono and always had errors with it. Caldwell's are a POS in my book, but I bought a Comp Electronics ProChrony and now have very few errors. I still have the Caldwell so maybe I should get out and do a comparison between the two...
Lead semi wad cutter. BUT I tested Remington Golden Saber just in water, great expansion in three 1/2 gallon jugs, at 1,000' from my 642...(AND 75 yards ain't shabby.)
This week we're comparing the original intro music to the new stuff. We're gonna see how they do as far as velocity and accuracy goes and then move onto the ballistic gel.
loved the video Sam, you concluded the damage between standard velocity .32 & 38 spl at combat ranges was equal, thou long range the .32 came out victorious in hit probability the .32 shooting much flatter gave it an edge than the .38 spl at 75 yards, the 97 grainer .32 is a normal heavy bullet in that caliber vs 158 grain LRN, i believe in a test with the 158 gn bullet would have gave the 38spl a better edge at 75 yards due to better momentum from weight, but the little 130grainer did manage to get some hits at 75 yards but it did alright to say the least.
I currently have the American Eagle 130gr round nose, full metal jacket rounds loaded up in my S&W 642 38 air weight snub. I have no problem using this load for self defense. They are pretty hot loaded factory rounds.
I just wanted to ask you: are you still currently carrying this load? I'm assuming that you use it due to the tumbling ability of the bullet as it hits. I read somewhere that 130 RN has 40 percent more striking ability than the old 158 LRN load. Which would be better for defense, do you suppose: 125 HP or 130 RN?
That was an interesting video. Your shooting dispels the myth snubs are inaccurate. The LCR shot quite well for you. I would like to see a comparison with semi wad cutters and wad cutters in the same calibers and comparable loadings.

Shame Taurus doesn't make a 327 in ultralite. I would love to see a budget 327 (with a hammer, I dislike hammerless guns, as I can always cut a hammer off and/or replace it, but hammerless you can't add a hammer), around here the Ruger is super expensive (720$ plus tax and transfer...)
This load seems like the best .32 S&W Long load out there. It is very hot and clean burning for the caliber. It also has great penetration based on some tests I've done with some old books. In one test, it even out-penetrated 95 gr. Federal Champion .32 H&R Magnum!
How does it compare with Buffalo Bore? And how does Buffalo Bore .32 long compare with non-BB .32 H&R mag (BB 32 mag is too hot for my S&W Airlite .32).
The Ruger is a much better quality gun than the Taurus, NOT SAYING TAURUS IS BAD just Ruger is better. Look at the amount of movement on your yellow target & see considerably more with 38 vs 32 That LCR is sweet. A friend brought one by to shoot, 357 M all day out of 13.5 ounces a little tiring on the hand but doable. Thank you for great Vids.
The Taurus has quirks, all in all it's just as accurate in the right hands. The issue though, is the Taurus trigger needs to basically kiss the rear of the trigger guard to fire, as where other triggers will break sooner and have room for skin folding on my trigger finger. What this means is I am at full pull with the Taurus, I then have to pull even more, with half the time there being a skin fold behind the trigger making the shot get yanked.
I didn't see it. I watch a vid or two from him every few months, but i'm not subbed. I always feel like they are asking for ricochets with what they do so I don't really support them.
Ya, nice stuff man. Good job on the .32, but that being said, the difference between 2 & 4 inch .38's is really night and day. Try them in a lever action if you get a chance as well.
I remelt them maybe 5-6 times before they start looking yellow. I still use them after that, but I get some new ones about every other month. I think I have like 7 blocks.

The .32 H&R Mag is honestly barely above the .32 Long in most loads. While there are a few hotly loaded .32 H&R+P loads, generally in a snub you gain like 30-40 ft lbs over the .32 Long, not a lot.
The accuracy of the .32 at 25 yds from a snub nose, very impressive, still hitting at 50, I was amazed! It would be interesting to know the effect at 50 yards? Would someone just go 'ow ouch, quit that!' or would it be meaningful dangerous? I won't wade into the whole 'manstopper' debate unless to say this, it's meaningless if you can't hit and accuracy is a pre-requisite? My respects and Pax. Edit, new subscriber.
You really have to look at bullet weights when distance comes into play. Like for instance, 230 gr .45 ACP has very little change at 50 yards, 36 gr .22 LR has quite a bit of change. The .32 Long still has some decent mass and wouldn't slow down too much at that distance. I cannot give a number without looking it up, but probably something like 100 FPS less.
Again, someone commenting with looking at JUST this video. I do video after video after video with every round reading, then I do one where the bullets are too shiny, and then the 200 rounds in a row that read are disregarded, and a handful that didn't read result in "you need a new chronograph".
I’m honestly thinking 32 S&W long is just as good as 38 special. That said my preference is 327 federal magnum. But I just got a 32 S&W snubbing and there is nothing wrong with it. I think there is a lot to be said for having six shots over five.
Gun sam how hard it it to get ammo for 32 sm long. Ive heard about it but have never seen any at my local gun shop. I always see 38 spl, 357 mag.. God bless. Awsome video.

Results are about as expected. That Fiocchi FMJ load in .32 S&W Long is my go to for the cartridge when used in defensive applications as well as a good target load. I do sometimes use wadcutters over it though in snub nose barrels but in most my revolvers in .32 calibers being 3 inch or longer, the FMJ works just fine and produces similar results.
Definitely one of my favorite cartridges and loads for the caliber. I've actually had some people come into my work looking for .32 caliber revolvers referencing your videos as cited reasons behind wanting one. Alas, my work doesn't really carry the .32 caliber revolvers though.

Fun test! I love how they say a snub is worthless beyond card table distances. You sunk that myth. There are .38 loads that do expand well so I would use RN as a last resort. The .32 did not suffer from overpenetration so this would work as expansion is unlikely anyway.

A friend came by 15 years ago and said here you can have these and gave me two boxes of 327 fed magnum. He had gone by cabelas and told clerk gimme couple boxes of 357 and gave him wrong ammo so I bought a ruger sp101 in 327 fed magnum. I cameacross a youtube by mcarbo for spring and shim kit, I followed instuctions on youtube and polished action and installed lighter spring and shims for trigger and hammer. it comp[etely changed performance to butter smooth with excellent trigger, then bought thousad rounds of 327 ammo because I knew shortages coming up. It will chamber and shoot 32 acp also because its semi rimmed. I also changed grip to hand filling wood target style, now have superfly 6 shot revolver that can handle any 32 caliber. Be safe and have fun. It is 3inch barrel and looks like scaled down gp100. Perfection!
The 3" SP101 is what the .327 was designed from, so you can't beat that. My LCR won't shoot .32 ACP correctly, I mean it can sort of shoot it but I get a 30% ignition rate as the rims are too thin to get hard primer strikes.
@@GunSamIs that true? I was under the impression the 327 originated in the Single Six, and that is why you're limited to what is essentially 22 WMR cartridge length with factory ammo, instead of the much more reasonable 357 length.

When I was first getting into revolvers I did as much reading as I could and quite a few writers said that the 38 Special FMJ or LRN is lousy and you would be better off with a 32 S&W Long wadcutter. It definately dumps more of its energy in less time through the target.
I will have to test them in gel. I ran some low end and warmer .32 wadcutters in jugs, but not gel.

Seeing this now two-year-old video mere weeks after I bought a Charter Arms Undercoverette in .32 H&R Magnum to be a more concealable EDC for summer attire. I learned of the .32 through the magic of TH-cam suggesting I watch a Lucky Gunner video on the caliber.
My experience with a Smith & Wesson Airweight in .38 Spl was not horrible, but the felt recoil was much stronger than my usual EDC (CZ PCR), and it wasn't comfortable. I really hoped I wouldn't hate myself for getting the .32, and so far I'm pretty happy with the gun. Most of the rounds I've sent downrange so far have been .32 S&W Long, but I've run a box of H&R Magnums through the thing, and while I can certainly feel the difference in the recoil, the Magnum rounds are very manageable for quick return to point of aim.
Getting a decent grip on this little wheel gun is much easier than on things like the M&P Shield 9 that's probably going to be a "safe queen" now that I have a more concealable piece that I can get a better grip on.
The name .32 H&R Magnum is truly deceptive. It's in no way a magnum, so it should be pretty easy to shoot. Most handgun magnum rounds are in the vicinity of 35,000 to 60,000 PSI pressure in addition to a lot of powder. The .32 H&R Magnum is somewhere around 21,000 PSI if I recall (.38 Special+P maxes at 20,000) and with less powder than .38 Special.
Interesting. The accuracy on the 32 is very impressive. Maybe our grandfathers knew some things we do not? The 130 FMJ 38 is the old USAF security police service load, rated at about 820 fps in a 4" barrel. I do not know why they felt the need for ball ammo, since they were not engaged in land warfare, but it makes good practice ammo. Nice to see that it tumbles as well. I have shot a lot of the Win USA version, but mot much of the Federal. Fiocchi's 32 ammo has a good rep- well desrved, it would seem.
Likely had a lot to do with the Hague Convention stating no nation signed on can use hollow point, soft point, or any other ammunition easily designed to expand in human bodies in warfare.
They knew that it was a long ride to the hospital and people don’t like having holes they’re not born with.
Bullseye shooters still use .32 S&W long regularly due to its seemingly intrinsic accuracy. Pretty crazy.

5:01 That little FMJ penetrated like crazy. Even though it's just punching a hole, if you lung, heart, or liver somebody with that thing they're in serious trouble.
Let's say you shoot that 32 SW long in self defense mode with no hearing protection.....when the cops arrive you are going to be able to hear what they are saying... LOL Nobody even takes into consideration the report of a round. That you will not have hearing protection on... I've forgot my ears a couple times at the range and if it's a 9mm it is shocking how loud it is. Never wore hearing protection out hunting with a 12 GA shotgun as it's loud, but the barrel sends the sound down range. Using a shotgun in the house for self protection is going to leave one hearing impaired for hours. Same for using an AR15.... that little Ruger in 327mag shooting 32 long is fun, easy, and quiet. 6 rounds with deadly accuracy... and concealable.
38spl are less loudly than high pressure rounds too. Very comfortable too.
I've shot a lot of stuff without hearing protection. It's not only pressure but also overall power that matters. Like .357 Mag muffles the hearing for a few hours, as where 9mm is more like a few minutes. The .38 and .32 are like cap guns.
After multiple errors like that i would have "got another reading" right on the center of that chronographs face

The .32 Long is featured many times in the Parker series by Richard Stark. Even some of the cops he encounters carried them. I’m seriously thinking about trading out my 442 for an older Smith or a Charter. Glad to see these comparisons!

I have been shooting my Ruger 357 3 inch gutter sight revolver with 38 Special and it shoots low. I have to tight the barrel up to be able to hit a bulls eye. My wife shots a Ruger 327 Fed Mag with 32 S&W Long and it is extremely accurate. I think that you just showed that the Ruger 327 Fed Mag is an under rated, but very accurate revolver with little to no recoil when shooting 32 S&W Long.
I own and shoot the .32 S&W long the most because I find, of all my revolvers, it is the easiest to shoot accurately multiple shots off the cuff at any distance. To me, if I have to use it for self-defense, I would rather hit what I am shooting multiple times than miss with more power. I really also don't care to kill someone, but would prefer to just disable an attacker. During the height of the wild west, mid to late 1800s, 3 out of 4 guns carried out west were not colt 1873s, as the old cowboy movies would have us believe, but small frame low powered calibers with .32 type ballistics. My favorite revolver, at the moment, is an 1896 S&W first model hand ejector in .32 S&W long that both looks and still shoots great. Love that gel test setup you have set up there. I always wanted to know what a head-to-head test between .38 special and .32 S&W long would show. I am glad to see what I have always felt, the inherent accuracy, shot after shot, of the smaller caliber, proven out. Yes, the .38 is more powerful, and why it triumphed over its smaller, older brother, but the little guy still lays the punches in more accurately, connecting far more times where it counts, the target!

A test that I thought I'd never see. I have a S&W J frame 38, snub, and a I frame 32, 3" barrel. President Teddy Roosevelt, I believe, said that he considered the 32 cal as the ideal police round. Both, non P rounds, are enjoyable to shoot and will put a hurt on the bad guy. It shows that you don't need to take your Porch grocery shopping when your VW will do just fine. Thank you.

Use wadcutters out of snub nosed revolvers for self defense. Easiest to shoot, plenty of penetration, and create lots of damage. Unless you can handle really hot +P stuff. True for a .32 or .38

Love how long it takes these slow rounds to reach 75 yards. lol I used to shoot plain jane old 158 lead 38s out of my 6 inch 686 at clay targets set up on the back stop at 100 yds. After some practice was hitting them 3 out of 6 shots. Off hand. Fun, and teaches you trigger control. But I was shooting single action. You shoot dam good DA my friend.

Sweet, now that I'm in my 60s, and my arthritis is more of an issue, that .32 is looking like a great little pocket gun. 17 ounces and six shots is do-able on days when my thumb joints feel like someone hit them with a hammer. Probably recoils less than my steel frame .357s loaded with 125 grain .38 specials.

Yes, most .32 S&W Long even from this 17 OZ revolver feels like shooting a .22 LR, and if the gun were bigger like the Ruger SP101 3" .327 Federal revolver loaded with .32 W&W Long the recoil would be even less. I would say it's one of the best low recoil options out there, a bit more effective than .22 LR as I have done that comparison, I would say roughly as effective as .22 Mag and similar recoil, but the .22 Mag is usually in a revolver and rimfire revolvers have terrible trigger pulls, it will make arthritis be felt with it's 15-20 lb trigger. This .327 Ruger LCR has maybe a 7 lb trigger pull, just overall one of the best options for comfortable shooting.

I have an H&R #732 snub nose in .32 smith and wesson long and it is a lot of fun to shoot just ammo for it is so hard to find right now! it has proven very accurate shot after shot. I want a 357 so can shoot 38sp/38sp+P/357 would be next step up to me. I wonder how 32 auto and 380 auto compare to the 32 swl round. I am pretty surprised how close these 2 rounds compare. And given that I'm shooting it out of a 2-1/2 inch barrel, it might accidentally get close to that 800 fps. they advertise.

yep. safe and effective follow up shots from .32 FMJs and .32 LRN. since the 9mm and .380 are not really known to be one hitter quitters anyways, it is actually better to carry a .32 that you can accurately rapid fire at close range.

But as I got older, I discovered I didn't need all the fuss 'n bother - not to mention the noise - that comes along with those calibers.
I much prefer poking the holes in whatever's causing trouble as quietly as possible, these days, and not having my ears ringing and my hand buzzing for half a day afterwards.
...plus you can put more of those smaller rounds in the revolvers I prefer to carry.

Still, a .45 ACP or .357 in a small handgun makes more sense than a 9mm, because those hotter and bigger calibers are one hitter quitters vs. a serious threat. That .32 is a lot of easy shots and a lot of small holes. That .45 is a one hitter with one big hole. 9mm is in a weird middle ground where the follow ups aren't easy (unless you are using a full sized gun) and you can't count on a one hitter.

Neither gave me any real advantage over what you've seen here in the video.
Both were heavier than what I carry now, louder, and not the most efficient with the rounds they carried, though the Commander was close. And they don't usually carry as many rounds as their full-size counterparts.
Also, just to further emphasize that smaller guns in bigger calibers is not always the way to go... my least-favorite gun was an Astra A-75 in .40 S&W that I owned for a while in the early '90s.
The thing was heavy, hard to hit with, and generally unpleasant to shoot.
I didn't keep it very long.
And for what it's worth, after being both a soldier and a LEO, I've seen enough not to count on ANY handgun caliber for a "one-shot stop". Especially since making any size hole in the other person is just as likely to make them stop causing trouble as not. Especially if that hole is made in the right place.
One way or the other, regardless of caliber, it's the person that gets a good solid hit on their opponent first, that will likely come out on top.

I recall from back when I had an H&R 32S&W long, the factory ammo was comically weak. But started handloading it and the situation turned around immediately. Have a lot of respect for the potential of the .32.

With the ammo shortage being what it is there is not much choice but semi-wadcutter or wadcutter ammo would have performed even better in the ballistic gel tests. Keep up the fine work!
Great testing Sam! Excellent shooting. Both good contenders. You can shoot .32 S&W shorts and longs out of Nagant revolver in 7.62x38R. The problem is the cartridges bulge and hard to extract in a pinch. ♠️🎩☯️

Nice video. I too have wondered about the round nose 38 special ammunition. I’ve got 130gr and 158gr but never really considered them for self defense. I suppose the 158 possibly could penetrate further though and maybe over penetrate.
The LCR’s are awesome guns. I have a 357 magnum version and mine is the “x” model so it has a hammer spur. But even with magnums the recoil is not terrible. Ruger really nailed it down with those guns IMO.
Paul Harrell once tested .38 SPL 158 gn LRN and it wasn't bad. Maybe 6 years ago as part of maybe a 3 part video series on.38

loved the video Sam, you concluded the damage between standard velocity .32 & 38 spl at combat ranges was equal, thou long range the .32 came out victorious in hit probability the .32 shooting much flatter gave it an edge than the .38 spl at 75 yards, the 97 grainer .32 is a normal heavy bullet in that caliber vs 158 grain LRN, i believe in a test with the 158 gn bullet would have gave the 38spl a better edge at 75 yards due to better momentum from weight, but the little 130grainer did manage to get some hits at 75 yards but it did alright to say the least.

I currently have the American Eagle 130gr round nose, full metal jacket rounds loaded up in my S&W 642 38 air weight snub. I have no problem using this load for self defense. They are pretty hot loaded factory rounds.
I just wanted to ask you: are you still currently carrying this load? I'm assuming that you use it due to the tumbling ability of the bullet as it hits. I read somewhere that 130 RN has 40 percent more striking ability than the old 158 LRN load. Which would be better for defense, do you suppose: 125 HP or 130 RN?
That was an interesting video. Your shooting dispels the myth snubs are inaccurate. The LCR shot quite well for you. I would like to see a comparison with semi wad cutters and wad cutters in the same calibers and comparable loadings.
Keep in mind, store availability for t hose of us who don't reload. Still two great rounds.
There was a perceptible difference in speed. The .32 was definitely slower out of the barrel to impact. Interesting.
All round make a hole. You just have to do your part and put the hole in the right place. Ask any hunter.
Funny how nobody talks about .327 Fed Mag any more, which was supposed to finally fulfill the promises the .32 H&R Mag made to overcome the .32 S&W's power deficiencies...

Shame Taurus doesn't make a 327 in ultralite. I would love to see a budget 327 (with a hammer, I dislike hammerless guns, as I can always cut a hammer off and/or replace it, but hammerless you can't add a hammer), around here the Ruger is super expensive (720$ plus tax and transfer...)
This load seems like the best .32 S&W Long load out there. It is very hot and clean burning for the caliber. It also has great penetration based on some tests I've done with some old books. In one test, it even out-penetrated 95 gr. Federal Champion .32 H&R Magnum!
How does it compare with Buffalo Bore? And how does Buffalo Bore .32 long compare with non-BB .32 H&R mag (BB 32 mag is too hot for my S&W Airlite .32).

The Ruger is a much better quality gun than the Taurus, NOT SAYING TAURUS IS BAD just Ruger is better. Look at the amount of movement on your yellow target & see considerably more with 38 vs 32 That LCR is sweet. A friend brought one by to shoot, 357 M all day out of 13.5 ounces a little tiring on the hand but doable. Thank you for great Vids.
The Taurus has quirks, all in all it's just as accurate in the right hands. The issue though, is the Taurus trigger needs to basically kiss the rear of the trigger guard to fire, as where other triggers will break sooner and have room for skin folding on my trigger finger. What this means is I am at full pull with the Taurus, I then have to pull even more, with half the time there being a skin fold behind the trigger making the shot get yanked.
Nice shooting! Ringing steel at 50 & 75 yards with a snubby is no small accomplishment. Jerry Miculek would approve I’m sure.

Ya, nice stuff man. Good job on the .32, but that being said, the difference between 2 & 4 inch .38's is really night and day. Try them in a lever action if you get a chance as well.
How many uses do you get out of your gel blocks? Do you melt them down and reuse?
I remelt them maybe 5-6 times before they start looking yellow. I still use them after that, but I get some new ones about every other month. I think I have like 7 blocks.
Good stuff. Man that .327 LCR is an appealing little gun. It would be great if you found a lever action .327 to pair with it. Could be some fun videos for sure.
Wonder abought the 32 H&R. Would it have overpenetrated? What recoil diff vs the 32 long.
The .32 H&R Mag is honestly barely above the .32 Long in most loads. While there are a few hotly loaded .32 H&R+P loads, generally in a snub you gain like 30-40 ft lbs over the .32 Long, not a lot.
In India 32 long is widely used by legal gun owners .
Being on the wrong end of either would suck.
The accuracy of the .32 at 25 yds from a snub nose, very impressive, still hitting at 50, I was amazed! It would be interesting to know the effect at 50 yards? Would someone just go 'ow ouch, quit that!' or would it be meaningful dangerous? I won't wade into the whole 'manstopper' debate unless to say this, it's meaningless if you can't hit and accuracy is a pre-requisite?

You really have to look at bullet weights when distance comes into play. Like for instance, 230 gr .45 ACP has very little change at 50 yards, 36 gr .22 LR has quite a bit of change. The .32 Long still has some decent mass and wouldn't slow down too much at that distance. I cannot give a number without looking it up, but probably something like 100 FPS less.
So, still quite 'pokey' as in you def wouldn't want to be hit with a round (as opposed to you would?).

Again, someone commenting with looking at JUST this video. I do video after video after video with every round reading, then I do one where the bullets are too shiny, and then the 200 rounds in a row that read are disregarded, and a handful that didn't read result in "you need a new chronograph".
I’m honestly thinking 32 S&W long is just as good as 38 special. That said my preference is 327 federal magnum. But I just got a 32 S&W snubbing and there is nothing wrong with it. I think there is a lot to be said for having six shots over five.
Gun sam how hard it it to get ammo for 32 sm long. Ive heard about it but have never seen any at my local gun shop. I always see 38 spl, 357 mag.. God bless. Awsome video.
The more you shoot that LCR the more I want one. I wish prices would settle a little more. And it’s not just the gun, because I have to buy ammo too.

I have found that the LCR’s are typically more expensive than the S&W J-frames. Harder to find too. That’s just my experience.
