    You are soo correct when you say the technicians at a dealership treat your car like another one on the list! this is why I always work on my own cars. Keep up the great work Sarah!

      Samuel Tejada lol but but that’s exactly what it is.. “Another car on their work list” they probably get cars more expensive and from more important people everyday.. 😅😅 it doesn’t mean they don’t do their job is just that is their job work the list.

      Yep, had the valve spring recall done on my BRZ, which took more than two weeks, and a couple days later it's throwing cam timing codes. Some forum research says that if they put the sprockets back on with an impact wrench they mess them up. Took it back and they grumbled and made a big deal out of fixing it no charge but a month later I got it back with new sprockets on it. When they have to fix something on their own dime, they shove it in a corner until they get "some free time". After three weeks I leaned on them for a loaner and a week and a half or so later I got it back. Been okay so far. Fingers crossed.

    Cam/crank code is directly related to the starter because when you go to start it, the ECU is thinking that the engine is trying to spin when it triggers the starter but nothing is spinning nor is any sensors putting off any readings.

      Chip Tessen I could see if it was a smart key car a brake light switch would cause it not to turn over due to not getting a brake signal. But dead cell, not likely but you never know. I'm a Toyota tech and not really fond of new Subaru. See a lot of spun bearings on the frs which is just a brz

  • @notanothername39
    @notanothername39 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    It's throwing up the codes because the engine ECU is seeing a start signal from the ignition switch and assumes the engine is rotating, but because in this case the engine is not rotating due to the faulty starter there is no RPM signal from the crank sensor so it assumes the crank/ cam sensors are faulty

    • @pieterstedehouder8441

      Ecu need sensors for that, crank sensor is one of them. The starter has no sensor.

    Hello Sarah , I've watched your video and as for the codes being set for the cam sensor it might due to your aftermarket tune you put on the car , it's just a thought. I work at a Volvo dealership and have been a Master tech for 20 years there. And when people reflash the Volvo ECM it can set weird codes , at times. It's good that you found the problem and it was a easy fix. KEEP up the videos and the good work. I enjoy watching your channel.

    • @brainfreeze44131
      @brainfreeze44131 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be that when you tried to start the car the ECM thinks that the crank and cams should be rotating. So no crank rotation, no cam rotation, set code.

    The ground wire on the starter loosens up its a pretty common issue on new Subarus its not the starter its just the single ground wire that clips in to the starter
    And fyi when clearing codes on Subaru ignition needs to be turned off for 10 seconds after the codes are cleared

    In a Subaru if the engine doesn't crank you will always get cam/crank sensor codes. The computer doesn't know that the engine is not turning over. It assumes it is not getting signal from crank/cam sensors...also amy time you have a check engine light traction control and vdc will be disabled by default..thus is because the car uses so many sensors to do these functions...happy holidays

    When Keith (New level Auto) gets here he might have an idea of why those codes were set, but I'm with you, it makes no sense for a starter to go bad at that low mileage and also to have those (apparently) unrelated codes. Oh yeah, "Flying Sparks Garage" is a great channel too. Nice job on the fix and on the video as well. Your editing makes for good viewing.

    This was an unexpected problem for such low miles and unsafe on the starter. But I have seen this many times on electric mirrors, like starters or window motors. I use a ball pen on the starter and a rubber mallet on the door panels for window motors sticking. Did have nice to take the end cap off the starter to see if the brushes were worn out that early, so expect again when you get that many miles on New starter or if there had been arching on the armature.. but regardless you fixed. Something on a diagnosis you will not forget. Keep posting it's fun

    Your videos are so well done and informative and interesting! What a lady I just watched you with this no start issue and the way you explained no disrespect to the Subaru techs simply that you trust what you do and I get that! Exactly I know what I did or not, I like to do as much as I can on my several vehicles then I know at 80 miles an hour on highway that I actually did torque my lug nuts or greased my slide pins on those calipers or put locktite on those caliper bolts I fell safer that I did it and someone else was in a hurry and forgot!

    I have replaced my starter twice now (98 Jetta TDI), the last starter was a Bosch and it only lasted maybe 10-15k miles. Not as easy to replace as on Subarus. I miss my 97 Outback these days, I just couldn’t hack 20mpg as my price for awd in a daily driver. Not sure it’s been a good switch; 25k miles (185-210k) and I’ve replaced the whole cooling system, re-gasketed the fuel pump, replaced injectors, brakes. FYI in case some folks don’t know; VW’s are WAY MORE COMPLEX THAN NECESSARY! I miss my Subaru bad sometimes. The thing was bombproof except the head gaskets at 100k but that’s global for dohc ej25s.
    Cheers! Keep up the good work in 2018!

    On a older cars if they won't start, you can press a horn and if control lights dims, that is a indicator for a weak battery, but not in a modern cars. On a cars with a lot's of electronic devices (almost any modern car) installed is security function that don't allow start the engine if a battery is bellow a proper voltage, usually about 11,6V. So the windows and horn work, but you can not start engine.

    Hey Sarah! I had the exact same issue, starter was bad and I had Camshaft and Crankshaft sensor Codes... Crazy thing is, this was on my 2013 Chevy Sonic but the exact same issue!!! My Car is a manual so I push/pop started it and went strait to the dealer. Dealer b/c Warranty and the dealer said that the outer body housing of the starter was spinning off the case and starter was coming apart. Car had about 80K and was about 3.5 years old. Crazy. if you had done a video before this ask what could this be I would have replied - "This sounds nuts but check the Starter" lol. Glad to see its back to normal and go for you on working on your own cars, I teach my kids the same thing. If this car wasn't under Warranty I would have swapped it myself.

    It might seem crazy that it's a starter, but it's not totally impossible I think. For example if the starter somehow draws power due to a short circuit the voltage level to the the camshaft and crankshaft sensor circuits will fall below spec, which will thus trigger a fault code (or a series thereof) because the readings from the circuit aren't measuring correctly. Same goes for any other electronics that might be sensitive to power fluctuations.
    You could have gotten the same issue if you'd put in a crazy sound system without changing the alternator and so on, if you'd crank it and the power drain was too heavy the car would end up spewing fault codes and possibly kill the engine as a result. Or at least go into a safety loop.
    Electrical problems... oh joy! Glad you fixed it though, and I am like you... rather fix things myself because I care. Even though I am not a trained car mechanic, but most of the things people make are logical in nature. So a bit of common sense and logical thinking can get you a long way.

    Just saw this video. Kind of late but starter failure are a very common problem for scobbys. I've been rebuilding them at the dealer since the 90's. The brass contacts inside get burned. You can get new contacts from the dealer or sand them clean and flat. Hope this helps...

    Similar thing happened to me on my 2004 wrx last year!!! Car kept dying on start up and eventually didnt start. Threw crank shaft positioning sensor code and I replaced that in like 10° weather outside on lunch break. My dad suggested to replace the starter and we did it and it started right up!...youre lucky to be in AZ and not in MN when this happened.

    I was gonna say if you couldn't figure it out to jump the exciter wire to the starter with the key on. Glad you figured it out. It was probably the solenoid contacts inside the starter got corroded or dirty. But they don't make the new cars as well as they used to. So it's expected, especially when you see things like new dodges loosing head gaskets at 30,000 miles.

    Glad to hear the problem is sorted, would never have suspected the starter to be faulty tho

    I had my starter go out last week too on my Cummins . I had hard starts for like 3 months until it finally went out.

    Sarah, I sort of surprised that the starter crapped out, but I'm more surprised that the ECU didn't detect the right issue. Sounds like crappy SW diagnostic design and programming in need of an update. Thanks for posting this.

    It happens Sarah, defecrive part. We take quite a few starters and alternators back from garages. Some, like yours, installed only a couple of months ago.
