I visited Lucerne in September 28 and was fascinated by the place. I'll be spending my Christmas, yes Dec. 25 in Lucerne and will see Mount Pilatus on that day.
We visited the ÄSS BAR several times while in Luzern in September and loved it. If possible go in the morning as you will have more choices. Then cross the street and find a bench and enjoy the beautiful lake. The Manor Cafeteria is very good, we enjoyed having breakfast there. You get to choose 6 breakfast items and a cappuccino for 6.90 CHF per person. We also had pizza at the DISCO PIZZA and we enjoyed it as well. Thank you Jana and Brett for the new restaurants suggestions. Will these restaurants be added to the Lucerne guide? Your 1 week Jungfrau Region guide helped us have a wonderful trip.
Love that you were able to visit the Äss Bar and Manor as well! (Thanks for that breakfast tip!) Some of these spots are already listed in our Lucerne Guide, but your comment is a good reminder to add the rest of them as well! Thank you for trusting our Guides to help you enjoy your time in Switzerland 😊😊😊
Visited au Cachet today on Jana and Brett’s advice. Incredible chocolate shop and warm hospitality from the lovely owner! Bought some special Easter eggs. 😊 Thanks for the tip guys!
Thanks for all the recommendations! There's so many great and interesting places to eat and drink in Luzern. One note: as of May 2024, the Gutsch funicular is under renovation, so you'll need to take the free shuttle van (or walk) to access the Chateau. And definitely go for that drink or coffee later in the day. Not the 44 CHF breakfast buffet that we got suckered into. The view is amazing, though!😅
We visited schoggi suzi yesterday at au Cauchet because of your video and although we got there late around 1800 before closing she was so very nice and sweet and amazing. Thank you so much for this!
We stopped at the chocolate store au Chalet last week on our trip to Luzern and we mentioned you in the video and she gave us free chocolate, delicious. sorry that I can't share a picture from her in the store. we also did the Fondue house and what a treat. Thanks
My wife and I are off to Lucerne for 6 days in June this year to celebrate her birthday. Really looking forward to it but i'm aware its quite expensive.
We think you will enjoy Lucerne! It can get expensive so it's a good idea to think about how you want to spend your money when you're there. Are there certain attractions/activities that you're wanting to do? How often do you want to eat at a restaurant vs getting take away from a grocery store? Thinking through some of these things could help you go into your trip knowing your going to spend some money but confident in how you're spending it! We hope you have a fun birthday trip!
Thank you for this video, it was so informative and well made. I am from NYC and we are traveling next week, all these tips and suggestions will surely be helpful. Also, I am a big big coffee lover, so all the suggestions on coffee shop make me very excited 😁
@@AplinsintheAlps We had an amazing trip to Switzerland and also went to Au Cachet, met the beautiful woman, when I told her how I came to know about her through your video, she offered me chocolate tasting too. Thank you once again for all recommendations 💛
Were you there recently and shows this was posted just less than two weeks ago. It looks warm. I will be there on the 26th and 27th of November. I’m sure it will be much colder. But I’m going to use some of your tips on places to eat on our one day trip there from Basel.
Will be visiting Lucerne next week and somehow trying to cross over Landwasser Viaduct near Filisur. Both Jana and Brett come across as a very friendly couple. If I ever did meet them in person, I would invited them both for a coffee or a beer. Certainly going to visit Rathaus, Gruezi Cafe and Two Hands. Thanks for any helpful advice ahead of what will my 2nd time in Lucerne because I was lucky to visit on a daytrip with my employer back in December 2018. Switzerland won me over that day because I initially didn't fancy visiting Switzerland. I told my boss that and the fact I wanted to return one day and he asked 'why don't I?', and replied that I would make it happen one day.
We live in Seattle, WA and are planning a December trip to Germany (Berlin & Nuremberg) the Vienna and then Zurich. Every city I have allotted five days with a couple days in Frankfurt (where we're flying into and out of) and a couple days in Hamburg just to take the day trip to Ludwig's Castle. Would we be better off cutting out two days in Zurich and opt for a stay in Lucerne instead of taking a day trip from Zurich?
Would most of this also be available in mid February? We will be travelling thru then from Milan on a circuitous route to Paris to return to the states.
Hi! I don´t know when exactly are you going , but the carnival in Lucerne is great! Catch some of it if you possibly can. Beware that sunday most things are closed, yes, even during carnival... But monday it starts again!
Good question! Some restaurants show the price per person, while others have a set price but say it's for at least two people. So be sure to confirm when you're at your chosen restaurant!
Hello Bret , I visited this coffee stand and spoke with the lady I think she said she’s from SFO and her name is Rocky or something. Thanks for the pointer to support fellow citizen. I have a picture taken with her and is there a way I could post it in here. Thanks to you both.
That's so cool you met someone else from SFO! Glad you have a friendly chat with her too. We'd love to see your pic! You can email it to us: janaandbrett (at) aplinsinthealps.com
Do you ever see any plant-based cheese? For the viewers that can’t or don’t do dairy. Also, it would be amazing if you could go to the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Europe if you’re in Zurich!
Since we’re not vegetarians, we’ve not specifically looked for plant-based alternatives to fondue. However, a lot of restaurants now have their menus online so you could check there! Hope that helps!! 🙂
You can buy vegan cheese at the large supermarket-chains Migros and Coop - they even offer vegan Raclette and vegan Fondue. If it's worth it? I don't know, I never tried it. ;-) And according to Google, a few restaurants in Lucerne even offer vegan Fondue.
Just watched your train video (again) as I prepare for a 20 day stay in Switzerland with most of it just outside Zurich doing a pet sit. Great stuff in your videos but I think my brain exploded reviewing the train options! One suggestion... there's a big story in the Washington Post on November 7, 2023, "Opinion Countless kids are colorblind - and don’t know about it. Here’s how to help." reviewing how many people (almost all men) are red-green collorblind. Basically, it's about 1 out of 12 men and 1 out of 200 women. I'm one of those colorblind men and when I downloaded your spreadsheet I wondered why there were just two colors. Only after I looked very, very, very carefully did I see the red and green differences! It appears there is also yellow. If there are more colors, I can't see them nor can many people like me. I didn't see a legend explaining what the different colors mean. So, in the future for the 1 out of 12 men like me, please don't use red and green to differentiate things as we probably won't see any differences! Thanks!
You really don't need it. The fountains are everywhere and they are all good to drink from unless they clearly say so (and I don't know a single fountain that you can't drink from in the entire canton, let alone the city).
I don't think anyone thinks these foods are free:) We'd love to be able to provide prices, but a lot of time those prices are influx due to seasonality and restaurants increasing the prices of their food. Most of these restaurants have menus online so you can look ahead of time so you know exactly what you're going to be paying!

We have loved your videos!! we plan to visit this summer. Any places to eat fondue in Jungfrau region?
Plenty! A lot of people like to eat it at the Harder Kulm restaurant!
Don't forget about Heini. Perfect for an afternoon zvieri with their delicious desserts.

Thanks guys.. you have cleared up some of our concerns for our coming visit to Luzern..
Glad we could help!
I think your coffee cart was replaced by another. In its place a young couple running Apollo 21. The cappuccino was good!

When you order fondue is one order for two to share, or do each have to pay?
Good question! Some restaurants show the price per person, while others have a set price but say it's for at least two people. So be sure to confirm when you're at your chosen restaurant!
Is Lucerne a good base stay for a week of travel in May?
Hi there! There's a ton of stuff to do around Lucerne, and it would make a great base with lots of variety to choose from based on the weather.

Flammkuchen is not traditional Swiss food. Graubünden is far away from the Alsace in France. You should try Drei Könige (3K) for traditional food.
Ok, ok, I’m going have to eat my body weight when I visit Lucerne 😜
I’m wondering whether I should tell my wife about the chocolate shop 😜
