      Yeah, when he throws big lambs himself you won't really want him.
      As a meat animal then yes.
      Really you want a small birth weight, its easier on the female. And a low wean weight. The female doesn't have to stress herself as much to feed it.
      Once the baby is weaned is when you want them to put on weight because they aren't dependent on mom and she can focus on her pregnancy.
      Cattle ranchers typically breed for "calf ease" via small calves that stay smallish until they are weaned. The murray grey and most commercial Angus have this trait.
      When I used to breed goats I kept a few bucks and usually always picked the smallest one out if a set of twins.
      I once picked a moderate sized triplet and used him one year. Now, I don't really have more than 20 goats, but he threw GAINT kids. I lost 2 nannys and 4 kids because of it. There where 7 set of triplets and they where just to big. I sold every female and banded every buckling. I also sold the ram.

    • @ashleaisabella6923
      @ashleaisabella6923 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Tator Kator can totally agree with you. We have had lambs that have been 8 or 9kgs and they just don’t grow as fast as the smaller birth weight lambs. They are really stunted by a high birth weight.

    • @danoeb-g418
      @danoeb-g418 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Nutrition in the 1st and especially the 3rd trimester has a lot to do with lamb or kid size. Sandy explains this in the video. Especially if you are free feeding. Limiting the dams feed intake in late gestation to only what is necessary helps keep those lambs a bit smaller and reduces instances of dystocia. Difficulty at birth due to an overgrown fetus is almost always a management and feed issue. Except in a few cases such as Belgian blue cattle who can't be born naturally.

      Being born encaul (still in water bag) is very rare. Most don't make it if someone isn't around. Great catch.

    My Grandmother was a midwife, back in the days when the doctor was 40 miles away by horse. When a baby arrived without the sack breaking, it was called a mermaid baby and it was good luck. Granny was born in Iceland and was brought to Canada by her mother, father and 3 sisters. They settled in the Interlake area up around Lake Winnipeg.

      Thieves. We had A mare on a tb farm I worked at that it was almost impossible to wean her foals!
      She'd work another mare's foal into a corner until it got desperate enough to nurse off of *her*, and then she'd just get a blissful look on her face, and threaten Momma when she'd come to find her jr.
      Got to the point she had to be moved to another farm and turned out in a solitary paddock for exercise. She truly WAS that bad. But, huge notation on her file about being a great candidate as a foster mother in case of tragedy.😉🤷‍♀️

    I found that if it was below freezing waters don't break. But that's with goats.
    Had one goat have triplets. All three babies where born in their bag. It was the coldest night of the year at 0'f.
    And some goats not wanting to push like the drama queens they are🙄. They would walk around and when a contraction came they would go to their knees. By the time they slightly started pushing (and gave up) they where so dilated it was like sticking my hand into a vast cavern and the babies just slide out.
    I don't keep females and their kids if they do that.
    I only had about 20ish goats at one point. Nowhere near the amount you have.
