    Mathieu "sprinters start too late" van der Poel. And "lemme just tow 6 world class road guys for the last 10 kilometers and win with a 600 meter sprint" for good measure.

    I was there (on my racebike ofcourse) live at 1,5km. Never saw this before. Never will see something like this. This was magic. Mathieu was 20-25 secs behind at 1.5km (1 mile). He's a streamtrain, with 6 wagons at his back.. last one (Bauke) was dying. They all where dying in MVDP wheel... unbelieveable.... wow-wow-wow-wow. Whe couldn't believe it first time, I just said to the spectaters.. your joking, he couldn't have won this, IMPOSSIBLE.... and then I heard it on the speakers.... it sank in. wow-wow-wow-wow-wow. Best race day of my life.

      I think it's from cross... That's not really a team race in the way road racing is. You have bike changes, punctures, crashes, and you just need to get on your bike and turn the pedals...
      And now he's on the road, he just does the same... Turns the pedals, attacks when he wants to, and tows a bunch of favourites up the road to the line... But he back himself.

      A really enjoyale trade, these riders following their gut. Back in the day it was the trade of inexperience and hot headed dreamers, but these days it just is a way of riding. Look at world beater Pogacar a couple years later, always following his gut. When they succeed it is so impressive, and if they do not succeed they are still animating the race and giving SO much back to the spectators. A pleasure to watch. Feels like a new golden age really :D

    Fuglsang was the only one who rode this race correctly. It was Alaphillipe's race to lose and Fuglsang didn't want to tow him to the line. Van DerPoel's race was a tactical nightmare, but it didn't matter because he's so much stronger that everyone else.

    I believe Alaphilippe made a mistake rather than Fuglsang. Fuglsang had 95% chance of losing if he worked. If alaphilippe worked alone, he would have had still a good chance of winning. In the end they both didn't work so you cannot say one or the other was willing to work while the other was working for him, you cannot blame the other for not working if you didn't work either. None were working and so the one that made a tactical error was the one that was most likely to win, in this case alaphilippe.

    • @aua6330

      You've nailed it. Alaphilippe gambled the victory away. And I don't understand why everyone is talking about Van de Poel. He took his chance to get out of the bend with high speed and pull over from behind. That's it and nothing more. VDP is surely not going to dominate the Tour de France or Monuments like nearly everybody supposes. This is not cyclocross, the competition is much higher.

    • @LF-hj8kk
      @LF-hj8kk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gulianoalberto3684 Steven Kruijswijk fall wasn't his fault so it is not comparable. He could still have lost the giro. Here, one of them working would have meant that one of the two would have definitively won. Here, it is the only realistic way they could have lost and they had choice over it. Kruijswijk did not choose to fall and might still have lost.
      Your argument is dumb. It is not an impossible scenario to happen. It is what happen in 99% of race.

    that guy on the right is really annoying, why should a rider that have an already growing list of secondary placements, on a team who only cares about the wins, in the twilight of his career, lead out alaphilipe, and accept second place?
    that race was alaphilipes race to loose, and he lost it.
    the type of racing he's asking for, where riders forget about attacking and just accepts that only fast men are allowed to win anything is awful for spectators, its awful for the riders, and its awful for the teams.
    we should be discussing reducing the rewards for secondary placements to encourage more riding like fuglsang did, not discouraging it.

  • @topsander
    @topsander 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    It was Fuglsang who had worked incredibly hard on the last Cauberg ascend to prevent Kwiatkowski and Trentin form coming back. Furthermore, Alaphillipe normally has a better sprint than Fuglsang (see Strade Bianche), so I understand that Fuglsang thought that he had done enough and, to be honest, I tend to agree with him: there's no reason why he should tow Alaphillipe to the finish line, especially if Alaphillipe is not doing the majority of the work. Alaphillipe was in a great position a few km from the finish line and should have won this race, but because he stopped riding, he didn't only lose the race, but he didn't even get onto the podium. To be honest, from a tactical point of view I've rarely seen someone make such bad decisions as Alaphillipe did on Sunday...

    • @slasaus1
      @slasaus1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eens, Alaphillipe ging al linkeballen met een klein koffiemolentje op 1,8 km van de meet... toen ik vervolgens Vd Poel als een stoomtrein (stiekem ook nog geholpen door een motor) wat verderop zag had ik meteen hoop. Op zo'n moment win je bij wijze van spreke 5 secondes in 10 secondes tijd. Maar ja, die gast heeft natuurlijk al een optater van jewelste gehad afg wo door als koning van het voorjaar zo op je plaats te worden gezet (nul kans tegen MvdP in de sprint die van kop af aanzette). Scrambled mind. Let maar op, MvdP gaat ook nog massasprints winnen na een lastige dag in de tour met lastige aankomst... dat NL kampioenschap sloeg ook nergens op heh nadat ie met zn krachten had gesmeten die hele dag.

    Lol Alaphillipe was the one to blow it. You say yourself that Alaphillipe would always win in a sprint, so why should Fuglsang then help out in the last Km's? If Alaphillipe is so good he should be able to lead in a pace fast enough to not get caught and then still beat Fuglsang in the sprint. You're basically arguing against yourself when you say Fuglsang should have taken the lead to get second place, since if the first place was secured for Alaphillipe, then Alaphillipe should have taken the lead to get first place and therefore Fuglsang did the right thing by not leading and Alaphillipe made the mistake of going too slow.

  • @KiatHuang
    @KiatHuang 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    To win Alaphilippe had to go hard in the last 2km. To guarantee 2nd Fuglsang needed to do the same. They were getting incorrect info from the race cars, but the race was so split up getting accurate time gaps on 3, 4, 5 clusters as they were moving, joining was next to impossible. They should have decided not to chance it and ride for the top two places, rather than assume they had them. Having said that they had not considered how incredible Van der Poel would be. No other rider would have tried that and pulled the largest group in the finale up to the leaders: they would not have the power, physiology, determination or humility. MVdP wanted to get on the podium so bad he did not care if he pulled others up who might overtake him on the line. He went for it like we all do when we dream of winning bike races. Boys Own stuff!. What a day he made for himself and the world's best one day finale. It's legendary already.

      As a Dutchman, i admire Van der Poel. But no-one can be compared to the Greatest of all Time, Eddy Merckx.
      Van der Poel is 24 years old. When Merckx was 24 years old, he had already won:
      Giro d'Italia
      Tour de France
      Road World Championship
      Paris-Roubaix
      Milan-San Remo 3x
      Tour of Flanders
      Liège-Bastogne-Liège
      Gent-Wevelgem
      La Flèche Wallonne
      In 1970, when Merckx turned 25, he won the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, Paris-Roubaix, La Flèche Wallonne and Gent-Wevelgem. All in one season!

      @@DolleHengst Hard to compare IMHO. Different times. Today's cycling is much more of a worldwide sports than it was back in the seventies, when it was mainly Belgian, French, Italian and some Dutch, German and Spanish riders capitalizing most of the races. No doubt though Merckx was way beyond his contemporaries. His amount of power, juice and absolute will to win, were huge.
      Anyway one should only start to compare with an absolute giant like Merckx if VDP can keep going like this for the coming few years. One miraculous spring isn't enough yet...

    Golden age of cycling? Yeah, no. Froom is so uncharismatic. Personally for such a strong statement cycling needs a great champion with strong personality like Hinault, that people from all over can support. Froom is just not engaging to watch and follow. My $.02
