what a beautiful job by Mathieu ....not only the surge just at the right moment over the top to create the small but critical gap but then continuing on rounding all those switchbacks so perfectly all the way down to the finish to keep the other strongest bike riders in the world who were still clearly chasing hard as they could the entire way, only off his tail by just a handful of secs. .... which at the finish turned out to be plenty !
they didn't work well together, Ganna was doing the least amount of work taking shorter pulls and immediately looking over his shoulder for Wout to come through. Ganna didn't deserve that podium.
There's no other race in the world where 4 totally different riders can contend the win till the last meters. And the latest 30 kms are so intense and electrifying
There's some others. Strade Bianche when van der Poel won it. The final group of 6 had the World Champion (Alaphillippe), a former TdF champion (Bernal), former CX World Champion (Wout van Aert), future MTB Olympic gold medalist (Pidcock), and the current TdF champion at that time (Pogacar). That being said, this final group of 4 was equally epic.

Got to love how when MVDP is on, he's on! He rides with such heart. Fair play to Ganna hanging with two stronger bike handlers then out kicking them for 2nd.
I don't feel great about Ganna getting 2nd. Those 3 might've had a chance to catch VdP if he could've held Wout's wheel through the turns. Instead, MvdP, Wout and Ganna were all pushing air and Pogacar is smaller (weighs less) than those 3. So when they got to the flat, the gap had actually gone up maybe 2 seconds and everyone was gassed, the chasers didn't have the advantage they could have had. Not taking anything away from MvdP, he was powerful and had great tactics.
Ganna refused to do any pulls on descent or finish flat. You see him shake his head every time he was in lead position. Instead of pulling he sapped his competitors energy and it was enough for 2nd. It think it was kind of lame but that cycling tactics
To me, the key moment is when he let Van Aert exhaust himself filling the gap with Ganna and Pogacar. Those 2 meters were too much for Van Aert. He closed them but also saved MVDP precious watts and gave him a moral boost seeing VA struggling.
It was quite obvious he will go FULL BLAST when there was 21 km left. I was so hyped to see him go in front of everybody doing the descent in his own terms.
