Does Van Der Poel Climb Faster Than We Can Descend?!

- At the 2021 Strade Bianche, Mathieu van der Poel laid down a watt bomb on the final climb to leave the rest in his wake. The Via Santa Caterina climb is a beast: 1.2km long at an average gradient of 6.4% and a section at 18%. Van der Poel rode up it at a whopping 27.3km/h! With traffic and pedestrians to avoid, can Manon descend the epic climb as fast as MVDP went up it?

remembers me of one our austrian cycling greats, georg totschnig, talkin about a surprise encounter with lance armstrong , training on one the austrian alp mountains, telling a newspaper: "he was going up quicker, than i was going down".

I would love to see a GCN challenge of car drivers vs riders...up and down a mountain. Each team has to do it on BOTH forms of transport. Fastest total time wins. Seeing (say) Clarkson sh17 himself coming down a mountain at speed...🤣
She absolutely crushed Van Der Poel on the same track, but open, with traffic and pedestrians to deal with. That's a heroic achievement. Who cares that she was going the other direction?

Is GCN working behind the scenes to get this arranged? If MVDP is willing to learn two Belgian TH-cam comedians the ropes in CX it must be possible to get him involved in this. Get Canyon involved to introduce a eBike which Ollie can ride… 😉

It makes you wonder if he did not have a little help from a little motor inside of his bike frame.
from the TV footage I never really grasped HOW steep this actually is those shots down the road and from the side are brutal!
It is a real sting in the tail after all those kms of racing!
I was in Tuscany a few years ago when I was just getting into biking and was lucky enough to be in the middle of a sprint session when I came across Van Der Poel doing a light training ride with some friends. I was pretty tired from my sprints but I challenged him to a race up the Santa Caterina, and to my surprise he was up for it. He put out massive watts as you'd expect but because I'm a couple of KGs lighter than him I was able to show him a clean pair of heels and take it by a few metres. He was lovely about it and shook my hand and I wished him the best of luck with the upcoming classics season. It was one of the best days of my life but sadly when I got home I realised my GoPro was pointing at the floor.

Van Aert cramping up and crashing on that climb in the 2018 edition is one of the most evocative moments in the race's history
Really showed his determination to give that race EVERYTHING he had that day
I loved cycling in Italy 🇮🇹! I spent 2019 in Vicenza. Best hills I've ever come across. Now I'm in the relatively flat Midwestern States drooling over videos like this. I told my wife writhing 5 years we are going back. Stelvio was a real treat experience!
Mr van de Poel's performance here just blows my mind. I have comparable climbs in my locality and I'm down to less than 10kph on the worst bits... just finishing some of them is an achievement!

I would say put Ollie and Manon on an e-bike and try and beat Van der Pol's climb time. Kudos for Manon tackling that ascent. Another awesome video from a great team of Ollie and Manon!!

Although I know I could finish the climb at a decent speed, going 11-12mph up 18-22%, is the hill closest to this to my house, and at that speed its about a 3 minute climb. My fastest time was 2:40 something. Meanwhile, MVDP could do 15-17 mph easy. For me, thats ripping off my legs.....

Van Der Poel may have done 27.3km/h but he didn't have to present to camera whilst doing it, Manon would have smashed him.
