    Even though Daisy did not love William as much as he did her , at least she along with Mrs Patmore's help, she respected William's feelings. This opened the door for a wonderful father daughter relationship with William 's dad. Also kudos to William for looking out for Daisy's long-term care by setting her up to be a pensioned military widow.

      No she did love William she just didn’t know it. Her worry for him and the joy she felt when she saw him and the worry she felt when he was hurt, plus the sadness she felt like she was dying. She did not know what love was, but she definitely felt something for him. The dowager helped her see that she did love him but did not realize it.

    I think this goes to show people married for all sorts of reasons, and loved one another in different ways. It wasn’t fairytales and passion but I can’t think of a more loving thing than they gave one another. He made sure she was always to be taken care of, and she gained a father and was as loved by her husband as any woman could be. She gave him the kindness and dignity of love in her own way. They were both the better for it.

      I find it interesting that majority thinks Daisy did right, and that the happiness and peace is more important than being honest. The one who, as usual, clarifies things and puts disputes to rest is the Dowager. When Daisy has doubts about her actions, the Dowager tells her straightforwardly: "So you married him to keep his spirits up at the end. Forgive me, but that doesn't sound un-loving. To me it sounds as if you loved him a great deal." I think that settles it. After that conversation, Daisy started to make peace with herself and to actually accept that she had been William's wife, that she had rights as a war widow and that she also had a father-in-law who cared about her.

    The best, most enduring marriages start out as friendship. I hear it from the most successful couples "I married my best friend "! Friendship love is still real, so she did truly love William. And, I believe he knew she wasn't head over hills in love with him but he still wanted to provide for her with his pension. He also gave his father a daughter to share life with. William was such a wise, kind soul...

  • @shannonfick7170
    @shannonfick7170 3 ปีที่แล้ว +156

    I think they were just both too young. War came along and every young man was “called” (coerced and manipulated) to do his duty. If they’d had time to actually be young teenagers and have little arguments and let a romance blossom, they’d have been as happy as anyone. I even think they were soulmates in a way (as we see when William and Matthew are injured and how both Daisy and Mary feel it). But I think this sort of scenario must have happened a lot back then. Teenagers pushed into war, marriage, and widowhood well before they were ready

    • @ericbana191
      @ericbana191 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I still think they coerced Daisy into getting along just because he was dying and they knew he loved her, and she liked him as a human being and a friend but not sure as a lover. I was so pissed when they kept her telling what to do but was really impressed how Daisy handled it, without hurting William or his father. I really loved their arc.

    • @cculler52

      @@ericbana191 Remember the times. Mariages were still arranged. Daisy did not have family to look out after her. Her below stairs family were loking out for her well being as they saw it. If William had survived it would have been a fine match. He was a kind gentle soul. She would have gotten over her girlish crushes, and would come to recognize she was saved from her own bad judgement.

    Daisy loved him, but not in the way he loved her. Mrs Patmore was seeing all the young men who died in the war in William, and felt very strongly that they should do what they needed to for him before he died, but she was wrong in pressuring Daisy all along, and putting her in such a terrible position. Not all love is romantic love, and Daisy should never have been pressured to marry William. If she did it of her own accord, then great, but that's not what happened.

    • @sophienugre4161
      @sophienugre4161 5 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      I think the engagement pressure early on from Mrs Patmore was wayyyyyy over the top. I would agree with her pushing them a little towards each other but she was going way to far putting daisy in a position like that. That was wrong but the marriage in the end may have been the right thing. They all knew William was dying, so Daisy wasn't committing herself to a life she didn't want, she just eased a cherished friends death. And she might have been too young to understand how much this meant to William. If they hadn't married I could see her regretting not marrying him once she got older.

    • @katemaloney4296
      @katemaloney4296 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I agree. However, William wasn't stupid and knew Daisy's life would be a rough and long road without many benefits--especially for a girl with little to education. He couldn't give her his knowledge, so he gave her the means. She would have a little pocket change and be one step up on the societal ladder. She wouldn't be a spinster, so door's would be open to her. Also, though I'm not sure, it gets her foot in the door to inherit William's family's land.
      William left her more riches than Daisy could ever be aware of: money, a title, land, and a father. She was luckier than most girls her age. In the end, Daisy was truly loved.

    • @celticlass8573
      @celticlass8573 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@katemaloney4296 She ended up with more than she had, definitely. I'm not sure that a title and land is part of that though--if I remember correctly, William's father was a tenant pig farmer. She might inherit the tenancy, but won't own anything. I may be wrong though, I haven't seen it in a while. :)

    Nobody can convince me that she didn’t love him back. She was innocent and confused. He probably didn’t fit the idea she built up in her head of “the perfect man,” so she didn’t realize what she had until he was gone. She sensed something was happening when he was about to be hit by that bomb…”someone walked over my grave”…that’s a sure sign they were soulmates. And he really became her guardian Angel. All of the progress she made in the later seasons was made possible by him, and what he left her with.

She loved him but I think she didnt know what she felt nor did she have the time to process what all was happening. She agrees to marry him when hes about to leave and then when William really needed Daisy, she marries him. That is love. Even if she didnt love him in the same way, that is love. She did him the great kindness and loved him in the only way she knew.

Anyway, but I also kinda agree with Ms Patmore that it's nothing wrong to lie to a dying man if he dies happy and thankfully Daisy went along and didn't make a fuss. I was hoping Daisy will explode for once and all, but she was quite surprisingly maturw. I love this arc really very much, very complex and watchable. I stopped after season 3 BTW.

      I'm glad I'm not alone! I find it interesting that majority thinks Daisy did right, and that the happiness and peace is more important than being honest. Personaly I would be devasteted if I knew someone lied to me in such important thing as love just to give me peace before death. And so I wouldn't be able to do this either. It just doesn't feel right. And the way people pressure Daisy to do it makes me uncomfortable.
