    This guy is a transmission genius. I've been a mechanic for 21 years and in all that time I have never sat in awe of someone's skill until now. I'm not even going to pretend I would be able to strip this apart without breaking something let alone rebuild it! It's guys like u that give us mere mortals someone to look up to and respect. Great work

      do you think there is a possibility to disallow the driver from changing gears ( locking the shiffter) because he has committed a mistake like he is accelerating?

    It's incredible how much time and effort these guys go through to put out such detailed and useful information for everyone to have access to FOR FREE, just for some entitled ungrateful assholes to come and point out any negativity they can, if I was Eric and Paul I'd hate to come to the comment section after all that work just to be criticized over nothing. Not to mention the final edited video we see goes by a lot smoother than the work in real life. Great work guys awesome video, I learned a lot! Thanks!

    Having built a few automatics for my cars I had always figured that manuals were a pretty darn simple creature. Man was I wrong! Paul and Eric you guys did a great job showing not only the inner workings of the T5 manual transmission but also how to properly rebuild one. Im truly impressed by the level of skill that went into this video. Keep em coming.

      GearBoxVideo I'm amazed this fairly stock T5 will hold up to the 600 BHP turbo 5.0 in the Fairmont. I had a few "gone through" T5 transmissions and they blew up in a 350 bhp '90 5.0 even under break in driving. I truly think two things, shitty assembly and I had a really good clutch. Must respect for your work and knowledge. I think you said you are in Florida. I'm in St. Augustine. I'll gladly be a client for life if I can buy you a beer something.

      Hey Paul, sorry to hijack your reply but I was wondering if, instead of pressing or tapping bearings and spacers in you could heat them up on a bearing heater and just slide them on? I know this is commonly done and as long as the bearing is heated evenly (a torch would be a big NO), they fall into place and are firmly attached once they cool. At any rate, thanks for these vids and also all of the great info over at the GearBoxVideo Channel. I've watched all of them at least twice!

    This series was very cool; Eric and Viewers were treated to the expertise of a Master Technician, and Eric was able to utilize a few tools the Tech hadn't used or heard of before (Trans Gel, high performance snap-ring pliers, etc.) that made the job go smoothly- they used the new vise, and gave the Press something to do, too. When installing the new parts at a later date (2nd gear & fork) Eric mentions that "He can just watch the video again"- so please *praise* Brian for his' *excellent* camera work and attention to detail through this; without _his_ skills- who knows if you'd miss something critical. Thank you so much, all 3 Gentlemen.

      +HUBBABUBBA DOOPYDOOP I actually use Dynatex Assembly Lube. Same stuff. I also have my own pliers I prefer to use. I commented on the snap ring pliers Eric had because they bit into the snap rings really good, almost to a point where you couldn't get them off easy.

    Gentlemen, thank you. Wonderful detail. I just had to pull the transmission from my 2006 Miata (6 speed) because something is frozen. I've spent the afternoon learning about synchronizers and then watched your complete video. I've pulled the top plate and the tailshaft. Couldn't figure out why it either locks completely when a synchronizer is locked to a gear or refuses to find neutral. Your video told me that I have to pull the mainshaft and countershaft since I think its the 3/4 synchro that won't unlock. I've taken apart and rebuilt almost everything on a car but a transmission. Your video gave me the knowledge and definitely the courage to give it a shot. It's already broken so I can't do any more harm. Ignore the trolls. You're fantastic to do this for free. Thank you!

    Thanks to both Eric and especially Paul for the invaluable assistance. Great guy, very personable and sincere--can't say enough great things about his expertise and his ability to instill confidence in someone attempting such a project for the first time. I've had the great pleasure of actually speaking to him by phone a few years ago--I had questions regarding some of the inventory he offers on his site. Prior to that I had already purchased his book, which I still refer to (I'm currently rebuilding my 3rd T5OD)--I'm sure now that I've found these videos I'll be re-watching both parts of them many times.

    I think this was a really good collaboration. People like Paul have some serious skills when it comes to just fetching a machine like that to bits, dumping it on the bench and then just getting it to go all back together. I think even with diagrams, laying everything out on said diagrams I'd give myself 1 chance in 5 of getting it back together.
    Eric was able to keep things more grounded for the laymen watching the video and add some comic relief.

    Great pair of videos you two (three) . Jam-packed with useful info and tips and the best part to me was watching two craftsman teach each other something new. I shared Paul's reactions to that damned plastic gasket scrubber thingy. GOT to get me one of those. Like him, I've been screwing with gasket scrapers, razor blades and metal-bristle toothrushes all my life. F THAT.
    Eric I only recently stumbled across your vids while looking for info on a motor issue on my '02 K1500 Suburban, I watched several of your vids in that cramped crappy little shop you had back then. It's nice to see you in better digs and seeming to have a much better time of it. Congrats all around.

    In German, there’s a saying among mechanical engineers: «Passt, wackelt und hat Luft».
    In English: «It fits, wiggles and has air (room to move)» - this could be the mantra of gearbox science :) .
    A very impressive amount of knowledge and skills is shown here, loved every second of it!

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +pepper669 WAIT! I thought the German's were all about precision!

    • @pepper669
      @pepper669 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +GearBoxVideo It could be that they mean it in a derogatory sense. Like «that's good enough for our clients, they won't notice the difference». In its complete form, it's «Sits, fits, wiggles and has room to move» (roughly translated from «Sitzt, passt, wackelt und hat Luft«).
      I don't know where the saying is coming from - it may be common among craftspeople like carpenters - but I'm sure every mechanic and every engineer in Germany has heard of it :).

    LMAO Eric. When you got excited about the freshly built and spinning shaft after the first press, I totally get that. You're not alone in that feeling!

    Very informative Eric and Paul! Awesome video! Also, Cameraman Brian did an awesome job too! sometimes Paul was a little too quick, but Brian fought hard :D Been on the channel since the early days and still loving it. Today I´m more confident then ever in doing work on my own cars!

    I'm inspecting and rebuilding one now. Paul is the Guru of transmissions hands down. His videos on 5speed.com are great to learn from. He is also very meticulous on his builds and I like that.

    I put that same steel bearing retainer on mine. The original one came apart and dropped down onto the imput shaft and put the throwout bearing on a bind which wouldn't let it come back all the way which made the clutch stay slightly disengaged. It fried the pressure plate and flywheel.

    Nice work Paul.. and Eric lol video was somehow very entertaining for me, took apart and rebuilt an 89' RM 250 dirt bike motor and transmission so I could understand pretty much everything that was done and why, again killer video

    Paul's point about the case being scratched by the Bristle disc is well taken. I noticed that Eric is using the 50 grit Green disc. There is also a Yellow 80 Grit and a White 120 grit disc available. I'll bet carefully using the White disc will clean the machined aluminum surfaces without leaving deep scratches that affect sealing.

    Paul is just ASTONISHING to watch! His intimate knowledge of all things transmission is almost hypnotic to see, and the way he has the library of specs, settings, and tricks is a marvel!
    Eric, you and Paul both rock! You're outstanding in your respective fields. (Insert totally stupid Farmers Only.com joke here). :-D

    Paul & Eric my hat is off to ya, my self I don't dig into transmissions but yes I can spell transmissions I just might take a leap as I have enough of them around that I just might take the leap as there looks not to be but a few more tools than what I have but nothing like getting new toys right to play with ..... Thank you again for the in depth video so stay safe and keep dirty ...

    Paul really is an expert, he NEVER has to look in a manual or take notes he remembers how every part goes back in and what direction it faces that's impressive Sir.

      ETCG, That just goes to show you there's no shortage of LOSERS that wish they could fix their own transmission much less build a work bench FULL of
      the best transmissions in the world, maybe they seem to overlook the fact that Paul ships transmissions all across the world, I'd give anything to own one of Pauls spec25z special Muncie units. We know different Car Guy we know Paul's a special individual.

    Eric, I've been through 3 garages and now I'm lost, and broke after paying 1,800 dollars to still be left with the same brake issues. So it's a 2011 fiat van, rebranded as Peugeot Expert in 🇬🇧
    Original symptoms were sticking brakes. All 4 had locked as it got worse and worse. Nice roadside recovery mechanic guy cracked master cylinder union and they all released. Got master cylinder replaced 700 pounds (like 850$) and brakes still stuck. So they then said caliper. But in the end they said no caliper required, mentioned psmetning to do with a brake pedal and rod needing adjusted. Got van back, something still wasn't right. Wasn't full on brake lock though the brakes would still stick slightly, freeing up when I moved away and then progressively getting worse. Pedal would go solid to the floor before, and still does. No abs lights or engine codes whatsoever. Also to mention it's a diesel. After the brakes lock on solid, usually after a few miles of driving without touching the brake pedal it would suddenly start to lock on. Initiality thought after they isolated something to the front right still sticking initially, that it maybe the caliper hose where its caved in on itself internally, locking brake on not allowing it to travel back up. Though surely not as it released instantly first time cracking the master cylinder?
    I'm going out of my mind here man, so will do any repairs myself if you have any ideas. Plus, I know you liked my Type Yarrrrrr Civc joke on Facebook 😉❤
    Go on Eric, could really do with some thoughts from the fella whom i respect most.
