  • Some tips when rebuilding a Muncie 4 speed. Hard shifting and gear noise existed after what seemed like a good rebuild. I took this job in to investigate why these problems occured. Rebuilding transmissions and sourcing good quality parts is a challenge for any transmission rebuilder.

There is no one else to my knowledge that makes such thorough and informative videos of manual transmissions as you Paul. All the info that you have gathered from years of doing this is shocking, most people would never look for the things you do when taking a box apart. This is what most rebuilders do and thus the customer has problems later. Please keep the videos coming, we know they are much work for you but we certainly appreciate them.

Great video Paul and I'm envious of your wealth of knowledge. I've been a mechanic for 30 years now and pride myself on doing the job correctly and attention to detail so I can very much appreciate your professionalism in your videos and gearboxes. Knowledge such as this is ONLY obtained by years of experience. I don't do enough manual transmissions to see patterns of issues or have enough data to support one theory or another so your videos help me to gain additional knowledge of things to look for during a rebuild. Thanks again and keep them coming.

Good stuff. I’ve been rebuilding Muncie’s for myself and friends since 1983 after taking a night school couse on a Muncie and an Automatic Transmission. Back in ‘83 I converted my M20 in my 70 Z/28 to a M22 b/c I wanted the whine even though I prefer the M20 ratio’s. I bought all new gears/parts from my local GM Dealer and it’s worked out perfectly.

Hi Paul, I love your videos. I have recently purchased 2 ,M-20 4 Muncies, both of which were supposed to have been rebuilt units with less than 1000 miles on them. The first I installed in my 64 SS Chevelle popped out of 3rd gear on deceleration. I pulled it out and found worn and chipped shifting forks and the brass rings dont seam to grab like they should. The trans also seams to have a noticeable stiff spot when rotating the tail shaft while on the bench ,when its in any gear. When in the car it up-shifted great and at 65 mph was noise and vibration free. The speed teeth on 2nd and 3rd gears are double cut and look to be worn back over 1/2 way. The sliders are pretty sloppy. I believe I will end up rebuilding this one to fix the things that were done wrong or not done at all the first time.

See, what's so nice about this situation is that so many people simply assume that old cars are naturally clunky and unpleasant to drive. And the go-to solution is always to upgrade whatever's bothering you to whatever is new and modern. While there's nothing at all wrong with that I think a lot of people go that route based on a misconception of what the old Hardware is actually capable of.

Was working on a 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR, which is a 5-speed manual transmission and it wouldn't shift into reverse. When I took it apart I noticed that the shift rail had a bur on it and was hanging up the reverse gear. I learned a lot from you Paul and it really came in handy today. Different transmission yes, but the concept of how a transmission works is still the same.

So much I dont know - but thanks to you I’m learning. Thx. I live in Denmark were the prices for a rebuild is out of proportions. So, I have by my self recently rebuild a T84 and a T90 for my 1944 Willys Jeep MB - both had the mandatory popping out of 2. gear problem. Currently the 1947 T90 is in the jeep because it’s a way stronger gearbox. Not original but when driving off road as I do it feels like the best option... Any of you guys having thoughts on the diffences between the two?
