Extremely sad to see NS 1630 away from Pomona Yard in Greensboro, NC. I've spent many days and nights switching with that locomotive over its long residency in Greensboro. I do remember one day my engineer & I were switching the pig yard at Pomona and came in contact with a trailer and ripped off the conductors side awning in case any of you were wondering why it wasn't there. Hopefully before its scrapped it'll be sent back home. If you are standing on the platform of either end of the the unit and look at the horse logo you can faintly see the original NW letters.
The build date on these two units is 1973. They are closing in on 50 years of service. Beautiful classic NW power. Pure gold for us NW fans. Keep up the great work!
I keep watching/playing this over and over as I run trains on my home layout.. as if far distance another yard has trains moving lol... then instead of operating my trains I watch the video lol.. all the same either for viewing or adding a bit of sound realism thank you !!
Man this is off the hook! Im listening to Jacobs Ladder by Rush while I watch this. Goose bumps. Especially when the engine goes by. The windows rattles 😆🤘👆🙌
I know one high hood locomotive that's in preservation is Southern Pacific 2873. It's the last surviving Kodachrome locomotive in existence, and it's in the western pacific railroad museum
Back in the early. 80 s would love to have. the DPU. technology. Engineers. would. put a lot less strain. on traction mothers. Now there equipping positive train control
Pretty neat!?! All that did was chop jobs and let inexperienced trainman play with the remote box. Safety has gone down dramatically since remote control. Derailments, side swipes, run-through switches, and deaths from being run over by the remote switchers. Yeah, you can guess I was one of the affected engineers. 34 1/2 years . At the end of my career, I couldn't hold yard jobs because of the remotes. But a trainman with a year and a half had no problem holding days with weekends off. The railroads got what they wanted ( like always) and I lost out on the retirement jobs that all others before me enjoyed. All for $15 a day more to the trainman. The SD 40-2 high hoods were junk. No toilets, rotten floors, mushroom seats with no backs, beat to within an inch of their useful lives. When the NS took over in 1999, the day it happened, all the good Conrail power was transferred down south and the NS high hood scrap was sent up here. If nature called you had to use a 5 gallon paint bucket and a plastic bag liner. Talk about modern railroading!
Stunning video work. Very professional. Let the loco sounds play! No need for much narration. I am actually working on a S Scale brass high hood SD40-2 now. it is going to be Southern but could have been N&W or Norfolk Southern. Thanks much for posting and sharing. It is appreciated.
I come back to this video quite often - I mean, high nosed SD40-2s! One question occurred to me - where is the engineer working from? Is he up near the other end of the train, throwing switches and making joints/cuts too? The RC crews I've seen at Colton seem to run from the front deck of whichever unit is leading. There doesn't seem to be anyone around this NS unit at all.
i would assume he’s at the other end of the train, setting the switches and cutting/joining the cars up like you said. just strange that they wouldn’t have a set of eyes on the loco to ensure safety or whatever
To hell with the haters! They don't like it, then they don't have to watch! I understand the struggles on the channel because everyone has their own problems in life. Why don't the keyboard warriors show us their perfect little lives? Because their lives suck and they think it makes them feel better to critique others. Misery loves company. And those people should keep their comments to themselves.
Blayne Frey yes one of them is #1626 of N&W origin, you can usually Find them sitting at the west end of the yard near the old Conrail Equipment. The East End switching is usually handling by remote control GP and SDs
Thanks D L this was amazing. I have always loved high hoods during the southern and NS days omg amazing, can you do a video on the midtrain relay cars? thanks again :-)
Thanks for a interesting video. Sad to see a once proud mainline back bone of railroads across the country now relegated to being RCL yard engines and local power.
I noticed that 1628 & 1630 didn't have their air lines coupled to the cars. How are they able to move all them rail cars with no air pressure from the locomotive and also be able to stop with no air being supplied for braking? Thanks.
The cars are "bled" off allowing them to roll freely in any direction while yard switching. The locomotive was originally owned by the NW and featured double clasp brake shoes on each axle allowing for more braking effort.
Couple of questions - what is actually housed in the elevated hood (remote control equipment?), and I've always wondered, why does an SD40-2 have 3 axles per truck? Shouldn't it be an SD40-3? Hopefully that isn't a crazy question!
Russell Kovach Usually the toilet compartment is inside the nose. In this case there very well may be radio control equipped in there as well, though I think the extra stuff on the roof has something to do with that as well. To answer your other question; Believe it or not it’s actually “SD” that signifies 3 axles. Dash 2 means it is a second generation SD40, produced after 1971 with electrical upgrades, better traction control, etc. The SD40-3 was never officially made by EMD but is a rebuild program many railroads have been undertaking to extend the useful life of their SD40 fleets. These are more drastic upgrades, with the cabs sometimes being entirely replaced and the electronics greatly upgraded to include MFDs and microprocessors.
it was all a railroad preference, some roads order locos to fit their operating specs... as far as advantages/disadvantages, the high hood gives better protection in case of a collision, the low hoods give WAY better visibility
If anyone likes pacing videos look up "Pacing NW train on Cincinnati Line (Peavine)" there you'll see what these engines really did. And running long hood foreward Leslie Rs5trf horn.
I donno how I feel about drone locomotives I mean I wanted to be a train operator as a kid but after seeing the first couple of drones on CSX 3 years ago I decided not to join no point in working a job a computer is starting to take over and you might say “oh there are many years until they make all trains drones” knowing railroads it won’t be long at all but oh well that’s progress I guess it can bring great new things and ruin old things
I think it's because they are remote controlled. In unit 1630, I didn't even see anyone in the cab, so it's likely they add those racks and lights to indicate that. I could be wrong, but that's my guess
I was using the sound of the SD40s to lull me to sleep... worked really well until around the 6 minute mark. By 11 minutes I was wide awake again...
Hi Delay In Block Productions
I love your train videos I am a Railfan in New Zealand.

Can't see the number on it. But, theres been a high hood sitting at the Winston yard for a few days now.
Going to Pomona today always good stuff there.
This is a great reminder of just how boring locomotives have become. Nothing sounds like this anymore!
The sd high hoods are even rarer than the geep high hoods!!
The build date on these two units is 1973. They are closing in on 50 years of service. Beautiful classic NW power. Pure gold for us NW fans. Keep up the great work!
The first high hood I ever saw was at Northtown Yard. It was a Burlington Northern SD9. Ever since than high hoods have been my favorite.
For me, it was Penn Central GP7's and GP9's on the industrial branch that used to run through town until the mid eighties.
I love a NS SD40-2, high or low hood doesn't matter!
Tim Howard go to horseshoe curve, you’ll see tons of them

I really like the "extreme" oblique views. You can see the track compress when weight is applied to them.
That engine is music to my ears!!
THIS IS MAKEING ME HAPPY
Love to see these old workhorses still getting it done in this day and age. 👍👍can't beat those old emd's
The SD40-2 was EMD's best selling model with over 3,000 built.
If not the most reliable locomotive in the history of railroading
Fantastic video!!!, High hoods are my favorites. One of these 2 should be saved.
4:38-4:45 Nothing sounds better...
Those sd40-2's sound brilliant
My second-favorite locomotive the SD 40-2 High Hood comes right underneath the SD 45 High hood
Man this is off the hook! Im listening to Jacobs Ladder by Rush while I watch this. Goose bumps. Especially when the engine goes by. The windows rattles 😆🤘👆🙌
1:21: Seen from this angle it looks like a normal SD40, the one of a lifetime. But things change when it gets closer.
NS 1630... low rumble, banging and a towering wall of plate steel on wheels.
Gotta respect those old hi nose classics despite the sight restrictions from inside their cabs.
Love high hood loco’s, hate they are mostly gone
I know one high hood locomotive that's in preservation is Southern Pacific 2873. It's the last surviving Kodachrome locomotive in existence, and it's in the western pacific railroad museum
1630 had worked Pomona Yard for the longest time. Some low hood SD40-2s replaced it and another high hood. Great video!
It's so werid to see locos being controlled remotely, but it's pretty neat that technology exists! Also nice to see high hoods are still being used!
UP uses remote locos near where I live. Usually a couple of Ex MoPac GP38-2s.
Even better to prove that you can take new tech and install into an ole school unit.
@@brett624 Whatever keeps the old girls in service!

One of the best sounding engines of all freaking time
I like the older high hood EMDs too especially Norfolk Southern HH SD40-2S
This is just totally Awesome !!!!!!!!!! Music to my ears
You can scale down the prototype, but you can't scale down the sound.
Sure you can!
Right here Joel:

Here in Greensboro NC was home for 1630 for years, it sad to see that it's gone now, but good to see it's still running.

How did it turn out?
I can listen to a 16v645 all day!
Scale Trains, please release more of these!
Saw some of these in Alabama long ago. When I was 6 years old.
Old 1630's looking a bit rusty around the edges, but she's not doing bad for a loco new in 1973.

Nice video! I like the Norfolk Southern ex Norfolk & Western high hood EMD SD40-2’s a lot! The N&W high hoods are my favorites! Really nice!

Last time I was on our manifest Drayton, Elkhart had a couple left on the west end

I am happy this is the best birthday ever
@a steinmann I appreciate it bro I do
I hope they preserve this beautiful exemplare. :)
I hope they decide to save the last two
that turbo sounds good
Wonderful video and sound :)
wow nice vid!! awesome engines! loved it!
This the first time I saw a high Hood run short hood forward
Thanks D L this was amazing. I have always loved high hoods during the southern and NS days omg amazing, can you do a video on the midtrain relay cars? thanks again :-)
Nice SD40
Awesome video!
Are those remote control locomotives?? Think I remember the ones with the orange lights on top are remote control
Yes, they are.
@@DelayInBlockProductions I thought so
Give me liberty or give me....an SD-40...yeah I’ll settle for that.
Anything that still runs on a Class 1 railroad and is a high hood is good enough for me... 😂
These went from ruling the mainlines to barely stretching their legs. Amazing they have survived the auction block, for now anyway..
AWESOME!!!🌍💯
Cool video
Fine looking video
1630 should be back n greensboro!
used to see 1630 all the time in greensboro
Thanks for a interesting video. Sad to see a once proud mainline back bone of railroads across the country now relegated to being RCL yard engines and local power.
I wish EMD woulda kept the GP30 hump roof and rolled cab roof profile; the SD40HH would look more tough and muscular.
My favorite locomotive, wish Intermodal would get on with making them in N scale.
At 1:45 looks like the rail closest to the camera needs a few spikes hammerd back in place..
Is that loco operated by remote? I don't see anyone inside
Looks like remote control to me. UP uses that a lot.
It is a remote locomotive
Wow Remote Control Awesome
Hi hoods I love them Lowood not so much but I would definitely.
Aren't high hoods rare?
Rare enough that seeing 2 of them in the same place is something to talk about
Any hope for these Locos surviving/going to a museum after NS is done with them?
I noticed that 1628 & 1630 didn't have their air lines coupled to the cars. How are they able to move all them rail cars with no air pressure from the locomotive and also be able to stop with no air being supplied for braking? Thanks.

are these still in service
I wanted GP30s

Why are some high, some short hoods? Whats the advantage, disadvantage? Other than looks. Aren't they the same?

Was the 2 locomotives a former Norfolk and Western locomotives
so are these being controlled from a central tower or do they each have someone on the train
By the looks of it they are drones
TBoy205 probably the conductor
Remote controlled actually.
not yet... but don't be surprised in the near future
there’s a guy with an actual remote control, probably at the end setting switches and whatnot
Excellent Video
🌿🌿🇮🇳🌿🌿
Can you do a cab tour of an ex nw sd40-2 with dual controls please for us railfans
these should run long hood forward
What was the original reason for having a high hood?
In the beginning of the video, the headlights should have been on.
what prime mover did this have ?
I like your narration. Why didn't you do that for this video?
Remote control trains who would have thought
It sucks not seeing a RS5T on 1628
are those high hoods equipped with remote control electronics? seems like nobody is inside the cab
What software do you use to edit your videos?
Dearborn...
@ 3:34... i can see the NS modelers DROOLING, plotting their next loco weathering event
Tren con grafitis (ns high hood sd40-2 1630)
Wish I knew what he was doing. He could be making up a train or breaking one up so each car can go to a separate destination.
If anybody doesn’t want any ads for the cost of about $12 a month, TH-cam premium takes care of that. Because I have it, I don’t see ads anymore.
hopefully my ebt can cover it
let me add that to my other $300 of subscriptions per month. ffs
LONG TRAIN?
NS SD40-2 AUTO RACK?
Q: why do they even bother putting those useless yellow strobe lights on those loco’s? Do people even see them?
I think it's because they are remote controlled. In unit 1630, I didn't even see anyone in the cab, so it's likely they add those racks and lights to indicate that. I could be wrong, but that's my guess
Matt Chaffe shit remote controlled? Never knew that. I
