Industrial Railroad Switching, Norfolk Southern SD40 Works Worn Out Spur , Middletown, Ohio trains

  • Railway switching on industrial spur. This train is in Middletown, Ohio on remnants of what use to be a busy railway spur. Most of the track is out of service but one customer still switches out tank cars. Norfolk Southern accesses this worn out spur from their mainline in downtown Middletown, Ohio. Trains come off the south west leg of the wye and then reverse into Graphic Packaging International. See the Google Maps in the video. First we see the train passing the historic passenger station in Middletown just after they cut off their train on Main 2. I filmed the local setting off one load and picking up one empty. There were 3 other tank cars that had to be moved to spot the car in the proper location inside the building. If you want to know what products they manufacture here just go to their web site here: www.graphicpkg.com/who-we-are/ There is also a clip at the end of the video that shows the full train. The Norfolk Southern local picked up 11 cars from the CSX interchange in Middletown before they worked the industrial spur. I showed the clip of them leaving the interchange yard last since this video focuses on the switching action. Trains operate on 160.980 and this video was filmed November 17, 2020. Thanks for watching!

Listen to the sound of that SD-40-2. Now that's what I'm talkin' about! In the long ago, those engines were sweet sounding, unlike the percolatin' Alco's I sometimes rode on as a brakeman. Today's diesel's also sound like percolators. Last customer: drag 3, kick one [well, we would've kicked it down the main with a brakeman riding it and made sure the rest of the train stopped before it crossed the switch thus saving a move], spot 3 loads. Not bad for just one customer.
Locals and street running is where it's at. Thanks, JT, for exploring all areas in your vicinity to bring us these great video's. Brakeman on the Hearne, Tx sub on the Houston &Texas Central [SP] are my bona fides. That world is long gone.

not sure how you compare an Alco to an EMD. Alco and GE are 4 stroke and EMD is 2 stroke prime movers.

An example of how railways are still important and relevant to commerce and our nation.
The small, almost forgotten industrial spurs are still of importance to businesses across the nation.
The honorable job I have absolutely desired with my heart, but never held: 'Railroader.'
    Thanks for the video.
Blessings to our railways, and their employees.

Great catch! I remember back in the 90’s I loved watching this operation. It was much busier back then. Conrail used GP38-2s and a transfer caboose sometimes. Sometimes you would see 15-20 cars on the local. Mostly boxcars and a few tank cars. Most of the papermills have either closed or quit using rail. The crews were always very friendly. I hope you can catch this local again. Thank again!

Do you know what this branch line was called perhaps? Was it just called the Middletown IT? That would have been great to watch in its heyday. It's very neat to see the tracks snake through the city.

Several years ago I followed a switcher, staying on public property, and watched it moving through the small industrial setting. After the third exit from a gated spur, the conductor approached me and asked if I was an inspector. "No, just a train nut", I said. He laughed and went on about his business.

Fun facts! As of 2020 the NS 3235 has retained its original Southern road number for 47 years. It was built as a high short hood SD40-2 and shopped at Altoona in 2013 to be upgraded to the ‘admiral cab’ and accompanying internals.

You asked if anyone noticed the car that almost ran through the gate? Yeah, I did - you were probably the reason she stopped. You probably saved some lives that day, JT. Why people keep challenging trains is beyond me.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't think JT had anything to do with it. The driver seemed to be trying to retrieve something from behind her, so just wasn't paying full attention to the road. And certainly no lives were saved. The car stopped a full fifteen seconds before the train came through, and being hit by a train that's moving at walking pace isn't going to kill you. Of course she was right to stop, but you're over-dramatizing it.

Good ole Middletown.. My hometown.. I lived less than a mile from those crossings at the intersection of Central and Sutphin Ave... 3235 is an early SD40-2. it has the standard SD40 radiator look.
plus the 3 holes in the truck assembly means it is former Southern,,,not CR since their truck assemblies had the earlier 2 hole version.
3235 had the high nose but NS cut the noses down to standard cab configuration.
3235 is almost 50 years old.

Pretty neat catching that puff of air moving those grass clippings at 2:10!
They're not very noticeable since they're painted now, but you've got a good view of the bell on the locomotive around 2:38.
Also, if you've wondered what makes the bells ring, here's a story about the clangers, or clappers, or whatever you like to call them. ;)
