I would like to extend the highest praise possible to all these Railroad Workers. It is not always an easy job. My son is an NS Engineer and i am very proud of him. God Bless...
I am in Family Nurse Practitioner school, and the soundtrack to my education for the past two years are your videos, the thump of the engines the distant track noise is the most relaxing thing to me.
@@Buick_GSX It shows imperfections in the coat, but if you're not running obvious clearcoat, it's not really an issue. In a way, the gloss is what makes keeping a black car looking sweet. Literally everything shows. This is also why silver colored cars are usually the best at hiding imperfections and grime...especially gunmetal (dark) silver.
THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES ! Here are a few NS facts that may or may not be known: if you're in the cab, at the Control Stand, you're on the right side of the Locomotive looking at the back of the crossing bell, (so to speak). That's where the F is going to be plastered, as per FRA ruling, the FRONT of the engine has to have an F on each side of the unit by the steps, at Eye Level. So you can know ahead of time which side to be on to switch & flag, so you can be seen from the Engineer's seat. For example, if the crossing bell is mounted on the long hood end, the Engineer's seat is on the right side looking toward the long hood end. That will be where the F is plastered. If the crossing bell is mounted on the short hood end, (not the low nose type with a windshield) the engineer's seat will be on the right side looking toward the short hood end and the F be plastered on that end, at eye level by the right of the steps, just below the walkway end deck. Another fact is the Number Glasses, (located on the ends of the unit.) There are 2 standard sized 60 watt 74 vdc light bulbs behind each one of the Plastic "number glasses." If the background is BLACK, with White numbers, it is a regular unit, but if the background is WHITE with Black numbers, it has Radio Control set-up capabilities, which means it can be placed in as lead unit to control another unit back in the middle of the train. This helps keep from pulling a train into on steep mountains, like Saluda. On it, as soon as you get to the top, you start down the grade on the other side. There's terrible pressures on the knuckles at the crescent of that mountain. From the top view, if you're using a drone, on the long hood end of an EMD unit, if you have 3 cooling fans inline mounted in the top of the Locomotive, at the very end in the long hood end, its going to be an SD (Special Duty), which means each truck is going to have 3 traction motors in it. You can also tell if its an older SD, it it has the grids in the side flutes and there's 2 big fans mounted in the middle of them. There's tons of stuff I COULD put here, but this is enough right now. I don't want to write a book here. I wrote an entire library on everything our rewire shop worked on. It filled 2 big book cases...but that was years ago!
She is definitely an old southern locomotive. The engineers controls are setup to run long hood, as you can see the engineer and conductor have visual contact.
Yyeah ;With the drone footag itt makes the the video so much as Youtr coverage more complete as I feel your has always been. my go to. .zYoiu peoople do a professsinaal!!
That sound brings back a LOT of memories living less than half a block from the BN railroad in the 70s and 80s. They always had a lot of high hood Geeps running on the line west of Aurora, IL.
Great video. When I saw how long it was, I thought to myself, "I'll just watch the first 15 minutes or so and then go to bed." The next thing I know, the video ends...and now it's 2:30am! Totally worth it, though.
I just about spit my dinner out when I saw that large overhead shot of the facilities. I totally recognized the place because I had camped out there on two different nights delivering gas/oil pipe to the customer that is in the old shops buildings. Jackson, Michigan.
That 5094 just keeps working, all day long, job after job. Pretty cool. Great use of drones and gfrounf cameras, nice synching with audio. A rela feel for a switch crew's day.
I really enjoyed this video, I especially liked that he details on the 38 were shown up close and overall a very entertaining and great job! Thank you!
A high hood GP 38 with a roots blower. I’ve not seen many, but I do understand that they made them. This one looks like it’s air-conditioned (yay!!). Beautiful locomotive with a beautiful sound.
All of the Southern’s ‘38s were air conditioned. The Southern Railway specified in their GP38 orders that they wanted them with air conditioning, likely due to the variety of conditions that they were going to be working in.
Great, i only wish i could see more of this type of rail fanning, the only way it could be better is if we could watch the engineers operating the controls with GOOD engine audio. had to give you a thumbs up on this one, u guys GET IT !!!!!!!
I love the GP38-2's ! I live beside a Canadian Pacific shortline that uses GP38-2's and GP9u's as mainline power , although not a high hood, still very good looking locomotives. great video as always!
nothing like seeing those high hood forward thats how locomotives were meant to run great video delay in block you folks do some of the best railroad videos on youtube better then the old pentrex movies lol awesome keep em coming delay in block!!!!
Man I sure do remember lots of these back in Kenova WV through 2013-2015 and I got to ride inside one of the HH GP38’s! It was NS 5138. Great video of these locomotives these are dying off quicker than what we think.
The shortline near my home, the Northwestern Pacific Railroad, owns a secondhand NS ex-Southern high hood GP38. Although I have never seen it run, GP38's are great locomotives.
I love the sound of the old GP's. Reminds me of when I worked at P&G's rail yard for a summer. Railserve used a GP7 high nose and a GP10 standard cab with frog eyes. Fun job, not that great pay.
I really enjoyed that, nice and relaxing to watch after a long day! I've seen a few of your films and they are all enjoyable. American railways sorry, railroads seem to shunt sorry, switch wagons sorry, freight cars in a way that isn't done anymore here in the UK. Keep up the good work, you're making lockdown much easier to bear!
Great video. Very nice quality too. The drone footage is amazing definitely adding to the experience. As usual, I intended to watch parts of your video and forward skip through it but this one I sat and watched the whole thing. Thanks for the upload.
Interesting video. Probably boring to some because it isn't glamorous, but making trains and kicking cars is a part of the work and those local road shifting jobs keep people employed. I couldn't tell whether the yard had any slope where they were kicking, but I realized that with a drone, and permission, you could get some great shots at a hump yard where getting to where you can see anything is nearly impossible. With the long lens and the drone, sometimes it was almost like standing beside them while they shifted.
The industrial switching sequence at 23:30 for Dawn Foods is excellent - I may just use Dawn as a prototype for a similar industry on my HO scale model railroad. Any idea what comes in those BNSF trough-hatch covered hoppers, versus the ACF Pressureaides and Trinity 5660s? I assume the latter are for bulk flour or sugar delivery, but am unsure about the BNSF grain LO's. Any info on inbound commodities would be great. Thanks!
SouthernAlco maybe we could persuade them to preserve the unit in this video because it looks like it's been repainted I can tell because the paint shines
Good that the railroad shops were saved and are used by the trucking company, but it would be awesome to see them restored and used by the railroad or converted to be used like the transportation museum at spencer north Carolina.
Think NS 5094 there is the best sounding GP38-2 i've ever heard. That low frequency thump reminds me of a Turbo unit. Music to my ears. Wish I could find a LokSound file that replicated this. Most I can find have that real crackly exhaust
Those old GP38's have Southern written all over them. There would be no need for those nice Tier 4 road engines if it weren't for these guys. Local pickup and delivery is not very glamours work, but its the meat and potatoes of the transportation industry. My late Grandfather was a switch-man with Southern for 30+years. SR!
This is history being fulmed. Gotta hand it ti these guys. Patients needed. Wingnut drivers constantly playing tag with Engines. Im sure theyve seen it all. 🤪😎
Hi - must say, I was not that into American trains before I started to subscribe to your TH-cam Channel, now I love evert video you guys upload! Fantastic job! Keep them coming! Only note I have is that sometimes the soundtrack close to the locos are very close to "turnover" maybe gain on the mic is to high?
Another nice video :-) I guess they have some software to calculate where all the cars have to go and i which order. As other have already mentioned, the drone-shots give a new "angle" to such rail video. Looking forward to more to come /Adam
That's real railroading right there. Long hood forward, kicking cars, getting on and off moving equipment, all of it. Great camera and drone work too!
I would like to extend the highest praise possible to all these Railroad Workers. It is not always an easy job. My son is an NS Engineer and i am very proud of him. God Bless...
Having worked for the railroad Safety is first and foremost!

Man, that really means a lot to me. Thanks so much for watching my videos. -Drayton
Drone coverage is awesome for Rail Fanning, reminds my of a model layout.
that's what I thought.
Man NS keeps thier stuff so much cleaner than CSX!
Part of me thinks the color helps ... XD
@@BenjaminEspostiblack shows dirtiness the easiest out of all colors though does it not?
Robert Hilburn I agree with you
@@Buick_GSX I guess you don't own a white car lol

She is definitely an old southern locomotive. The engineers controls are setup to run long hood, as you can see the engineer and conductor have visual contact.
I love the drone shots
Frank Wells Thank you!
Frank Wells drone filming is the best and the future of rail fanning
The overhead drone shots where you're looking straight down are reminiscent a model railroad view. Nice work.
This video is absolutely amazing. The drone shots with the audio just worked out perfectly. 5 star video.

These guys are not screwing around. Love it. Nice drown shots.
Great video!! And thank you for not putting in a music track....just the thunderous growl of power.
The old girl has such a great sound! Love the look of the high hood!
gondolas are the workhorse of all rolling stock, they sure get beat up quit a bit.
brandtfj I agree ,I think its the most abused car on a railroad.

Love those old high hoods a railroad running next to akron ohio I see every day has a bunch of them.love that old iron from the good old days.
Ah, that must be the difference in sound with some of the older EMDs- turbo vs Roots blown. That unique whine is the Roots blower.
Thanks for the close-ups of NS 5213, F for Front ( Long Hood Forward ), a symbol used for at least 70 years.😎👌👍🤠😁
The drone shots are really neat gives you a totally different view
American RAIL ROAD.. CLEAN AND WELL. MAINTAINED... Salute the Maintaince STAFF.. 🙏

We have two highhoods stationed out of Conneaut: NS 5035 and NS 5204. Snagged 5204 yesterday doing some switching as well.

Brilliant photography
great job on on the train videos they are the best

Outstanding video, I like this kind of video with maneuvers!
Good to see some shunting happening.
Excellent Video! Juss RailRoad Action! No Train ID etc Juss Enjoying the Action!
Fantastic video. The drone footage is great.
A lot of great catches! Nice work!
Love the old Geeps!
Memories of me hanging around the E-L as a kid in the 70s, switching local drill with a GP-7 . Got a few caboose rides also.
Great video. Love the drone
My favorite locomotive, the ex SR HH GP38-2. Thanks
SouthernAlco Mine, too!

1:27 Hey, I saw this GP38-2 at Rochelle Railroad Park
Excellent video!!!
Come on how cool is that. Great.
Great job ! Just keep the cars on the tracks & the spills to a minimum. Thx.
Very nice video !!!
25:39. Rubber pucks in the swing hangers instead of leaf springs. Makes for a rough riding truck.
Nice drone footage
i love NS and i would love if you keep showing more vids of them. Also where was this shot at, State and what yard it was.
I use this as a soundtrack for my DC switching layout in HO scale😁 thank you🙏
I like train videos on TH-cam 👍
Great work!
AWESOME!!!💯🌍

Great sound!
love the audio in this video ^^
Nice, very nice!
