    Autism inertia is such an interesting topic for people with an autism spectrum disorder.
    This is actually a combined issue with PDA pathological demand avoidance within autism and a feeling of compulsion and OCD.
    Probably won’t have the most complex issues for autistic adults, it is also one of the most impactful parts of autism in children.
    Here are some of the mistakes that you make when thinking about Autism inertia and how you are dealing with it.
    You sit and stoop as soon as you feel you cannot get a task started
    You do not take regular sensory breaks when hyper-focusing on a task or project

    I always seemed to be more emotionally distressed whenever I had to stop what I was doing and go help a customer. I had SO many things to get done in the bakery, and even though I could start out going fast, it would get harder to keep up with everything as the day went on. Everybody else could get off on time (or even early, but I really struggled, and nobody had sympathy for me, even though they could see that I was clearly rushing myself like crazy to get it done. While I couldn't get things done as fast, it was obvious that I was clearly trying and often straining myself. And once I got into my 30s, that's when I really noticed that l would ask myself how I was going to keep working like this. I then eventually worked for a hotel buffet, and they eventually started complaining about my OCD (because in my mind, if a my boss tells me that they want something clean, they want it to be clean (not missing spots or leaving a few crumbs here and there). And unfortunately, even when I was quite fit, I would go as fast as I possibly could, and the boss would still say that I was slow. And eventually, I got let go. I was chronically burned out, woke up exhausted before my shift even started, and I would stay longer to finish my tasks (sometimes I would clock out on time, but then I would stay a few minutes later, as to not upset the owner). But yeah, I hope that I never have to work like that again. I am relying on God to have my back.

      Same happened to me, but I wasn’t diagnosed yet, actually misdiagnosed. Now it all makes sense. I finally found a career where I can be hyper focused, then the next day recover… but it took a long time to get there. For now, focus on what you love to do. You deserve it.

      Yes ,I was like that when I was younger still a bit to this day. The important thing is learning to prioritize what really matters and what doesn't so you don't burn out at a task.

      @@lightseeker3100 Yeah, that's hard to do. It's hard for me not to prioritize every task. Because nowadays bosses pile more and more tasks onto you, and they ask you if you got every item ticked off on your checklist (they want you to do everything everyday). It wasn't quite so bad when I started working 20 years ago. Beck then I only had to worry about focusing on ONE job position all day long. And then after a few years, I noticed that ever so gradually, employers were telling their workers to take on other job positions at the same time. It all started off with workers covering other people's breaks, and taking over their job for the 15-30 minutes (which is great, if people are willing to do the same for YOU (which wasn't the case in one of my jobs; which made it quite difficult to get my work done so that I might be able to take a break (the manager didn't even ask if I had a break yet, and I was lucky to catch a break; trying to keep up with food production so that the customers wouldn't complain of we ran out of this or that donut, muffin, bagel, or pastry)). Other people who did my job position seemed to get by alright though.

    Yes it's harder for us to start and get it but, once we get it we really get it!

    What I do is grab a piece of paper, go through all the overwhelming amount of tasks that I need to accomplish to finish a video or whatever else I am working on and then write them down into a to do list. Then if I can get over the inertia I do the job one step at a time. And if I am not ready, I come back later. But the second time I attempt the task, I don't start with the overwhelm of too much to do that kept me from doing it the first time. Instead I go to my to do list and just start knocking out the things I need to accomplish. Really helps me get things done, edit videos etc.

      Also helps me focus a bit when my brain keeps me jumping around doing 1000 tasks that keep adding more new ones as I try to accomplish old ones lol

      I don't know why I'm so adverse to pen on paper. It's as if my brain feeds in the chaos.

    So... golden question. You've broken down the tasks, are taking breaks and have learned list building and task management and put it into your calendar and now your calendar is prompting you to do something and your brain just goes.. Nope, get's overwhelmed and freezes up... even though you know you set it up yourself, it feels like being forced to do something and it feels like I'm loosing autonomy... how do you take pathological demand avoidance into account?

    Neuro-spicy task tackling for me… is sometimes totally out of control
    100 background things i need to truly do. Then i notice im lost in something that only helps me (which isnt helping me).
    That second i shut off whatever it is… just like this great video. I’
    Im eating lunch it just popped up AND SERIOUSLY.. if i do not shut down U/T i will be here 3 hours from now.
    Use too.. i sort of made excuses for mystery (they were pointless excuses) and what i needed to do is still wasn’t done.
    So the second i finish this… i go finish mowing and trimming trees, shrubs and clean house because i have company coming from out of town (Memorial Day weekend).
    You said list and i actually laughed out loud(totally out loud) 😅
    its so out if control i dont even understand what it is on what list (if i could find them).
    Luckily its basically a leftover bad habit… i have gotten my life so much more under control…
    I was involved in horrible rollover accident a few year’s ago… and it left me partially paraplegic…
    a term not used much, but i can walk some… spinal cord starts swelling and boom the signals leave and i cant walk till the swelling goes away (this is mostly daily)… So i have maybe 3 hours out of a wheelchair, or off crutches…. I learned very fast to quit wasting time.
    I use to be very ashamed of my Autism because i was the only one around with it…
    But these days its not such a big deal
    I still don’t talk openly about it (except in places like this) and if i did people might understand me better…
    When i got hurt it mostly came to the surface because we are different and stuff freaks me out and sometimes its just not something i can hide.
    Then and only then, im usually pretty open and blunt, and defensive of what i fear people saying..,
    i have gotten better and i guess thats all that really matters

    Tbh I have always blamed it on my adhd and it is a combo where it magnifies it I think being co-morbid

    Inertia feels like being physically trapped in my own body. I'll be playing a video game I'm not actually enjoy but can't stop. Not like an addicted need to keep playing, just the repetitive motion of not being able to make yourself do something different.
    It's also sitting in the car for forty minutes before being able to get out and go into a store. Or I don't know. Just losing time. Being so absorbed in a topic I don't feel the need to eat or go to the bathroom or anything.
