Love all the comments about Doris or Annie as she didn't like to be called especially in social events. What an amazing actress she was. I have recently been watching the start of the show and now enjoying 1971. Times like them will never be repeated and the acting magnificent. Thank you for placing this small tribute here.
When the show was repeated on Granada Plus, I taped hundreds of Annie era episodes and I still watch them today. Annie's snobbishness could be funny or annoying, and the character could be sensitive or insensitive. She was a very rounded character. I remember one episode, when her son Billy told her he never wanted to see her again. Annie was devastated and Doris' acting was terrific. I felt so sorry for Annie - I actually cried! Doris was a brilliant actress and Annie is a Street legend.
Having watched Coronation street many times Doris Speed reminds me of Australia because as a British migrant family Austria was receiving coronation Street many weeks behind Britain during 1965.
I recall, when Paul O'Grady was still performing as Lily Savage,'she' was talking about the storyline where Samir donated a kidney to Tracey and subsequently died in which Lily says,"Tracey needs a kidney",followed acerbicly by,"Er,noTracey needs acting lessons" Fricking hilarious.Tracey was always 'going upstairs to play me tapes',lol.
I know this is a year late, lol, but I've only just watched this clip.Eammon Holmes famously referred to Anthea Turner as 'Princess Tippy-Toes' when they worked together, lol.Makes you wonder how some people actually get on tv,although I guess in her case Blue Peter had a lot to answer for.
You Mean the 17th of November 1994 because it was the same day Roger Cook was on Good Morning with Anne & Nick talking about The Cook Report's Series 10 opener on Cot Deaths.

Ena, Elsie and Annie......What a super midfield. No prisoners!

I agree...When Bet, Elsie, Ena, the Ogdens or anyone was in trouble she genuinely cared and wanted to help...Great writing in those days......
Can't beat the oldie corrie. Best series then. Never the same from 2000s. A street of fun, arguments, laughter and intimacy with the characters.😊😀

30 years ago wow !
Yes it was,November 16 1994 was when Doris Speed went up to that soap heaven in the sky.
Tony Warren was a clever writer and Coronation Street being his creation. He created iconic characters that viewers enjoyed watching.
He'd be HORRIFIED at the show now.....I am certain of that!
