What are remarkable woman, actress and singer? I wish I had met her in real life I was far too young, she is my favourite on coronation Street. Love you, Betty.❤️❤️❤️❤️
Being 20 years old i unfortunately missed out on seeing her in Corrie during the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, but i'm glad i'm old enough (even though i can't remember a lot from the episodes due to only being a kid at the time) to have watched Corrie from 2003 onwards and got to see legendary characters like Betty, Blanche, Jack and Vera. I stopped watching it properly after Betty Driver died because it wasn't the same any more.
Incredible to think Betty had a film career during the golden era 25+ years before Coronation Street even began. Seemed like a lovely lady, I have many memories of her being on Coronation Street when I was young. RIP.
Aww what a lovely tribute to one of our national treasures. I had no idea her off-screen life was so tough. I'm glad later success at Corrie gave her the laughs and financial security she deserved. What an inspiration!
I would loved to have met Betty she was an amazingly talented lady and so down to earth. The bit at the end when she was on about her hot pot had me in stitches. Thank you so much for keeping millions entertained Betty, a true star RIP lovely lady xx
Coronation street was part of my childhood. I'm 70 something, haven't watched the show for decades. I have a great fondness for the characters of the older era. Many of the old stars had interesting lives and careers, what an interesting life Betty Driver had. I'd forgotten about "Betty's hotpot" Get the feeling that if you met Betty Driver, she wouldn't have been very different to Betty Turpin. She has a warmth and un-pretentiousness.
"the episodes from the 60's,70's,&80's were full of both drama and humor Bet and Betty always at the pub waiting on the Coronation Street characters to numerous to mention all of them but you know them, that came in and out the doors and listening & interacting with them was great and putting up with Mrs. Walker, her son Billy,&Fred Gee at the Rovers Return,thanks."-🤗. 🌐📻🌐.
Thanks for uploading this, I thoroughly enjoyed it! I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this docu was narrated by Sir Ian McKellen! Betty is surely missed, fabulous character and I think a genuinely nice person in private. I'm glad she made it to 91, well deserved!
What a lovely video. My parents were roughly the same age as Betty, and having watched corrie almost from the start, I was told how big a star Betty was years before. I've never seen any of her films but I've heard her lovely singing and I'm so glad she agreed to join the cast of corrie later. Lovely lady. Thanks for posting this.
I think Betty and Bet were my favourite characters in Corrie. Betty reminds me of my friend - blunt and really funny. Such a lovely humble woman in real life. It was sad when she said that she would have liked her mum to hug her.💔 May Betty RIP
Betty is a kind, ernst and understandable land lady who I wouldn't cross and her time on the Cobbles has made my childhood (especially in the 80s). :'(
To hear a more detailed and moving interview, go to Betty Driver's Desert Island Discs appearance in January 2011 on BBC R4 (all the more poignant as she died later that year). I knew little of her, but was moved and impressed with her plain and humble speaking. I admired in particular the way she said she'd never forgiven her mother, though without bitterness.
betty would know her true partner now she has achieved perpetual life, one man, one wife make harmony together and when they put company will come together eventually.
Was the show edited as I remember this was a hour long and they talked more about the Betty’s storylines like for example her secret son Gordon with Bill Kenwright talking about their scenes and that she became a second mother to him
Betty Driver passed away in hospital in 2011 aged 91 from bronchopneumonia She was in hospital for six weeks As of 2018, she's been in Heaven for 7 years so far
They should have kept the way they used to do thing in the old days more talk less action cause coronation street was supposed to represent every day people in the north but now it doesnt
Corrie changed after Betty passed. I stopped watching and William Roache was the only actor I liked anymore. Writing is ludicrous. The writers lost sight of what made Corrie great. It's now a trashy soap opera devoid of humor and warmth. The characters have all married one another, at least twice. They need to cancel Coronation Street or get rid of 90% of the cast and take the show back to the original values.
Well said Jan. I believe they can have a balance. Revive their character based comedy and drama, with one typical soap full of action plot running every six months. Their ratings would revive as well, I'm pretty sure of that.
I believe they should go back to their original format too. It would work if they had one melodramatic plot running every six months or so, and focus on what made the show into the iconic phenomenon it did.
Betty was like The "Mommy" of Barmaids. She represented the last of the Old School Barmaids. She worked with Annie Walker, Bet Lynch and today's Generation of Coronation Street Folks would be blown away at how things were like back in the day. I had no idea that Kimberley Walsh of Girls Aloud auditioned to play Maria Sutherland and lost to Samia Ghadie Smith.
I'm surprised to learn what an illustrious career she enjoyed. I saw her character as two dimensional on Corrie because she never had a backstory. More a glorified extra than one of the main characters who would pop up behind the Rover's Return bar on occasion and have a couple of lines.
Betty, like a lot of older stage actors werent used correctly on soaps. They were caricatured. Lynne Perrie (Ivy Tilsley) as a prime example. Saying that like, Fred Feast, had some great comic timing. Very under rated actor Fred.
Around In The 1980s She Said "Tomorrow I'm Going To My Solicitor And I'm Suing You For Defamation Of Character. So Mrs Walker,You Can Your Best Sherry Where The Monkey Punches Its Nuts Do I Make Myself Clear."
She really was a one-off... Bizarre that her Father was a Policeman and that her invisible hubby in Corrie was also a Policeman...Never saw him that I remember...off to find her hot pot recipe now. Lovely that they still have her photo on the pub wall.
My Mum started her professional singing career at age 13 yrs in 1947, and sang with Vera Lynn in a concert. She was humble, and modest all of her career, and could have gone very far after appearing on Opportunity Knocks if she hadn't decided on bringing up her family in the 70's. I would say Betty Driver seemed quite conceited about her talent, and success, which is not becoming.
Born 12 llbs...Was she born eating hot pots.....very pretty young woman....I clean a 95 year old ladys windows and she is still beautiful....its strange really n dont obviously mean sexually biut its quite nice n she is lovely temperant....Gives me hope....Smashing

Not watched it since she passed. Legend. Tear in my eye :(
Coronation Street is not the same without Betty Driver.
RIP Betty Driver
😢😢😢
It's not the same period. I can't watch any of the episodes past the early 80's.
This was lovely. R.I.P. Dear Betty Driver♥
i'll be honest, i used to think "just a soap actor". had no idea she did all that before the street.
Same here, I just assumed she had came to acting later in life. Boy were we wrong!
@Abbie Hazel Florence Hunter you're an absolute prick and you toon the comment so far out of context so u can have a wee angry rant. Fuckin nutter
Betty was such a wonderful, down to earth character and will always be truly missed:-) R>I>P Betty.xx
Glasgowlass I loved her
Betty is a kind, ernst and understandable land lady who I wouldn't cross and her time on the Cobbles has made my childhood (especially in the 80s). :'(

I still remember her saying "I know chook, I know chicken" when consoling a younger female on coro (it may have been maria) - ~15 years later
Are you not thinking of when she consoled Claire after Ashley died in the Tram crash/Joinery explosion?
Hotpot Ken?
betty would know her true partner now she has achieved perpetual life, one man, one wife make harmony together and when they put company will come together eventually.
Ha ha. I looked up Betty's hot pot recipe online. +_+ Thanks for video.

19:03, Betty nails it as to why Coronation Street is boring today...at least for me.
12 pound new born? Holy shit.
Legend ,
Ken Barlow does all these Tributes, Betty was a stalwart and was always part of the scenery, never had any memorable storiylines

Very very interesting
Betty Driver passed away in hospital in 2011 aged 91 from bronchopneumonia
She was in hospital for six weeks
As of 2018, she's been in Heaven for 7 years so far
Much respect to Ian McKellen, and most of all to the great lady herself. It's an earthy and classy production. All too appropriate.
They should have kept the way they used to do thing in the old days more talk less action cause coronation street was supposed to represent every day people in the north but now it doesnt
That bloody hotpot :D
Betty Turpin
When coronation street was good stopped watching in the 90s
Can anyone upload the episode where Alec tells Betty that she is sacked and she walks out. It's a clip on this video toward the end?
Corrie changed after Betty passed. I stopped watching and William Roache was the only actor I liked anymore. Writing is ludicrous. The writers lost sight of what made Corrie great. It's now a trashy soap opera devoid of humor and warmth.

It’s funny at half speed!

It was from may 1982, betty had been mugged
who can forget bettys hot pot
She wos a rally good Lady she ded a rally good Lady
She would have been 99
Is that iam mckellen narrating
42 yrs...pinched a living.
She was the last of the gritty no nonsense northern female characters from the golden age of coronation street,
Betty D was of course lovely, but Classic Corrie reveals, amazingly, that Betty T was a snappy aggressive judgemental old bat.
I thought a Betty Driver was the Queen's chauffeur.

Her mother pushed her into it so your research first before typing nonsense !!

Mr and Mrs Formby would be the people 'we would avoid' these days. Not exactly 'right'. I dare say Betty dodged a bullet.
They don’t make um like Betty anymore.
