One of the best pre-battle speeches.
He mentions family as a great motivator to carry out their duties, not hollow concepts. That "riding alone, with the sun in your face" joke not only serves to relieve some of the pre-battle nerves, it's also a comforting reminder about afterlife. And, finally..."what we do in life, echoes in eternity"...all that delivered with the strong voice & charisma of a general, who despite his rank, is a "primus inter pares", addresses his troops as "fratres" and leads them from the front...
This particular speech scene will always send shivers down my spine and make me stand straighter

I like the opening of this scene. You can tell Maximus is beloved by the men, Commodus was not just jealous of the respect he commanded, but he also knew he would never be able to become emperor without full control of the military - Maximus, while an honorable man, was a threat to Commodus's ascension to power simply because Maximus owned their hearts and minds.
One subtle point I think people miss because it goes by so quick is the dynamic between Maximus and Quintus. You can tell there is some tension and maybe even hostility between them. And that pours over into the scene where Quintus betrays Maximus.
this plays a lot into real Roman history, an Emperor always wanted to ensure the Legions were more loyal to him than to their general, the simple fact was who ever controls the armies, controls Rome. Augustus recognizes this and begins the practice of the Legions being directly payed by the emperor with "donatives" and introducing pensions for them. There was case where a Roman General recognized this fact too, I don't remember his name, but I'm pretty sure it was when Augustus was emperor a General saw his men held him with more respect than they did the emperor, this general having too much respect for Augustus himself decided the honourable thing to do, and what was in the best interest of Rome was to resign and become a farmer, relinquishing his power, and ensuring he did not threaten the emperor's rule.

on the flip side maximus says "would you quintus " when hes told that the germans should just accept they are conquered
this means maximus sees quintus as a honnorable and brave brother in arms, i think its safe to say they served years together , which is why the betrayal hurts him so much
@@tavish4699 You make some good points, and you may be right, but I still disagree. Look what happens to Quintus after he betrays Maximus... He goes from being Maximus' deputy commander to captain of Commodus' Praetorian guard.

Such a simple yet profound statement that humanized their foes and revealed that Maximus understood that in reality there was truly no difference between them, just the circumstances they found themselves in....
He knows they are fighting a brave enemy.

1. U don't burn the forest that u are in. It is suicide.
2. People don't go forward into burning forest. Reflexes.
3. Cavalry cannot ride through forest. And I loved the part of "Hold the line". Half of them would be on the ground by the end of this scene.
4. Horses don't go into fire. Even less than people. It is just impossible. 1 idiot horse can be found, but there are a lot of them. Panic->death.
5. U don't light arrows and shoot them, u put smth on them and light it up. And u certainly cannot kill smth with such arrow. This is not how it works. U don't put fire line ahead of u as well. It would cause a lot of chaos and burning people. U give one guy a torch and he runs and light the arrows.
This scene is good for Demon lord sending army of zombies with fire protection into zombies without fire protection, but in real life...

One of the best battle scenes in movie history. Watched it wide screen 📺 UHD dolby surround, I felt like the arrows were passing by my head. The cavalry charge is so gripping, one has the feeling that you are riding with them through the trees. Unforgettably electrifying!!
When watching a movie with a really good TV set, it becomes a completely different movie.
See the original movie "The Fall of the Roman Empire" from the early 1960s. Huge cast and huge budget!! I like it better than this movie!
@@iamgermane it is not "the original movie",Gladiator is partially inspired by Fall but it is in no way actual remake of it.Both films mainly draw inspiration from the same historical period of the Roman empire.

The opening scene of this movie is really good. It shows the romans strong fighting as one cohesive unit instead of breaking and suddenly fighting one on one and throwing away the scutum... Pullo GET BACK IN FORMATION.
Except.. . They did break formation. In the end the barbarians rushed them so fast they were able to throw their primary weapon, the pila. And that they also didn't form proper lines to meet the enemy as you can see them in smaller groups.
@@koreancowboy42 yeah, the depiction of the infantry was the real disappointment in this otherwise cool sequence -- they just kind of walk along until they get rushed by the German mob and then it's just a scrum. The real foundation of the Roman army was its infantry and their extremely disciplined tactics, which were not on display here at all. The Rome TV show (for all its flaws in the second season) did an infinitely better job of depicting the infantry. Another MAJOR problem with this scene is if you actually look closely at the shots it is obvious that many people aren't even going through the motions of fighting -- at 6:34 in particular, some German holding a spear walks into the back of a Roman soldier who falls down and the German is just laughing like the camera isn't even rolling.
@@nerva- well the Roman legion is fighting on very bad terrain, it's muddy and uneven ground. Most of Roman's combat prowess is its flexibility especially on very good terrain due to the Roman's formations.
@@koreancowboy42 no, the Phalanx had the advantage on good terrain. The Roman legions were better overall because they were effective even in bad terrain with their disciplined use of Roman tactics, which were flexible, unlike the Phalanx. Also, the movie DOES show off them using the "tortoise" vs. arrows, but then it didn't follow through with them using proper discipline and tactics once the enemy charged them -- it was just every man for himself.

I remember in cinema the wide angle shot with all the ignited arrows, illuminating the sky, was absolutely mesmerising, on the huge screen, the shot gave goosebumps, amazing sound editing, you had the impression you were there in the shot in the middle of it. Even if you listen to youtube to the sound with decent headphones, you can distinguish the many sound layers during the battle. what a scene!

It may not be everybodies cup of tea just like this movie, I am sure not everybody on earth likes this type of movie, but for example: Avatar, Troy . Prob few others.

At it’s height the Roman Empire under Emperor Trajan ran as far East as the modern Arabian Gulf, where the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers flow into the sea. Trajan himself stood on “a gigantic stone” and looked eastward. He could not know that he was exactly nine days march (on foot) from the furthest westward outpost of the Han Dynasty of China. As mind boggling as it is a Chinese Explorer from the Han Dynasty, the monk Zhang Qian, may have stood on that same rock and looked westward precisely 150 years before Trajan. Both men , Emperor and Monk, thought they had traveled far enough, turned around and went back home.
EDIT: Never again would a Western Civilization at it’s Apogee be so close to Chinese Civilization at one of it’s Highest Peaks.
Imagine what our world would have been like if the Empire never fell.
The Roman Legion at its height were experts at combined arms warfare in the ancient sense.

The Roman army was technically the most advanced and proficient army of the ancient world and we known today that they actually did have catapults with burning oil charges.
Dr Richard Carrier has good material on how advanced the Roman military technology was, burning charges were not even top of the list.

We got so many great films like this at the end of the 90's and early 00's. Gladiator is one of my favorites, it has real actors in battle instead of all that CGI bullshit we got today. Sure, there is some CGI in Gladiator, but not that much that it ruins the film. And above all, the films of the past didn't have any of that woke, social justice warrior, bullshit that is in film today.

Ridley was 62 when he released Gladiator, and 86 when he released Napoleon. I can imagine that it takes more effort to manage all the details when you are 86. Napoleon had plenty of issues, but I still enjoyed seeing it. The actress who played Joséphine looked like she came off the set of Blade Runner 2049.
In terms of opening battle scenes, this is right up there with Saving Private Ryan.
Epic movie. Goosebumps. Especially when the Emperor is watching as the infantry is slowing moving up and the fiery arrows are flying with cannons making that thwup thwup noises in unison. Lovely. Just amazing.

This age in warfare had a psychological ideal on both sides;To die in battle was a glorious death.
The "- Is acceptable. Agreed?" with the smirk is so good, as you find out quickly that he's part of the cavalry that is in risk of the catapults... So few great commanders in history but all of the greats had this in common: "I would never ask them to do something I am not willing to do with them."
Knowing that putting part of your force at higher risk is the best move, and doing it, is one thing. Knowing that it's the best move AND THAT YOU'RE PART OF THE GROUP AT RISK, and doing it, is another thing.

Bit of a shame the original ending of the movie wasn't implemented. Would have been nice seeing Maximus Decimus Meridius become an immortal fighting in future conflicts like the Crusades, the Napoleonic Wars, the World Wars, and finally the Gulf War in the best montage possible (with perhaps a hint of Baccano!).

However, no one remembers the writer of this novel from which the screenplay of the film was taken: Daniel P. Mannix. Great honor to the writer of the novel.

It is nice how the enemy just stoof their shouting and let the Romans get ready.
The epic level of destruction that the Roman Army could dispatch was truly awe inspiring. It predated WW1 by obviously thousands of years but in some ways was just as simple and terrifying in scale. Before this film came out you just wouldn't have appreciated it.
Not to be overlooked is the great music that accompanied and gave superb color to this movie!

I read some place that one of the reasons Ridley Scott was able to get such a look of realism to the forest burning was because they literally burned it down. The forest that they shot the scene in was slated to be destroyed, so they were given permission to go all out with the fire.

"Hold the line! Stay with me!" That leadership. This movie still sends shivers down my spine, never got tired watching it, since 2000, I don't think I'll ever get tired watching it.

One of the coolest (if not "THE" coolest) battle scenes ever.
CLASSIC , artillery to soften, infantry to engage then calvary to envelope . THEN DECIMATE. if you leave no enemy ,then you DONT have to repeat.

Dont think they would use the legionaries in a battlefield like this. They were succesful because of them fighting together not in a caotic fight like this
Best in that it gets across the idea of the Roman military as a well organised machine, but it is not accurate in many ways.
Most of the heavy equipment was only used during sieges, and Roman cavalry was never just "legionaires on horses" as depicted in the film.
The Legionaires *were* depicted correctly AFAWK in terms of how the units were deployed and moved across the battlefield. That matches written records and artistic depictions from throughout the empire. But we simply don't have any firm record on how they actually fought because despite having the training manuals from various periods which say how the Romans *wanted* them to fight, the only accounts we have of them *in the field* ALL describe different things happening in practice.
Legionaries should throw their pilums to The Enemy lines before melee starts.

Absolute great opening scene and the landscape really looks like in the the teutoburg forest (northrhine westphalia and lower saxony), where the romans lost three legions (17., 18. und 19.) including auxiliaries under Publius Quinctilius Varus in 9 AD.
Fun Fact: Crowe is not an Aussie. He was born a Kiwi AKA New Zealander.
When he's winning Oscars he's claimed as Australian. When he's punching someone's lights out he's "A New Zealand actor".

Considering that the Ancient Germans had spent much of their time resisting Roman conquest; only to play cultural 'catch up' from The Middle Ages onwards, against the rest of Romanized Europe and, given a strange twist of fate by the time that the 20th Century had dawned: Those Ancient barbarians, evolved and unified under the German High Command had evoled into a mighty 'Roman' army, far surpassing in both tactical and technical prowess the Italian army of the time. Direct descendants of The Romans.
Which goes to show that one society or culture, picks up the torch from another, to carry on with the marathon: The French invented ballet, but it was The Russians who further developed it and made themselves the masters of it. Again, so ironic.
It always cracks me up when movies show northern europeans running at a shield wall bristling with spears like a horde of zombies.😆 Also, they would have to finish fighting the northmen as quickly as possible so that they could fight the forest fire they just started!
I wish there were a few more overhead shots while the battle is ongoing to really capture the scale. Such an amazing scene.
