In this video I built a nightstand that I thought would be simple... because I had the instructions. It was a guessing game that made me want to make my own pdf instructions to correct the ones I used. Instead, you get this neat video. #jonsdiy #PowermaticMakers
If you wanted it to be taller could you still cut it at 28?
Of course! Consider your cross hatches on the sides will look a little skewed but not that much. Also my changes made it flush with the top of the bed, so you could actually start by measuring the top of the bed to see what would be a good height. I just started with the instructions so I did not consider this until I realized how tall it was. Thanks for you comment. Don't for get to subscribe!
I appreciate the video. I used it to build my wife one. But, after I messed up the first drawer I made, I decided to use a 1x6 for the back piece. It works perfectly for a drawer stop and also prevents it from falling or sagging down when it opens. Just a nice addition if anyone decides to go that route.

When you say you use a 2x4 for the legs, I noticed they are square edges. I can’t find and standard 2x4s without rounded edges. Do you buy a 2x8 and rip down? If so, are they truly 2x4? Or, are they actually 1 1/2 x 3 1/2? Sorry, crazy amateur here!
did not rip them. They are standard 2x4s they do have a round edge.
@@JONSDIY ah ok thank you. I can’t seem to find 2x4s that are close to yours. All I’m finding are extremely rounded edges which makes pieces or fit together as nicely as yours. I will attempt to rip the boards and see how it goes!
@@joshcav071 if you do decide to rip them to get sharp edges, don't take off more than the width of the blade.
The only thing I would do different is the bottom of the drawer that is probably 1/8 to 1/4 thick should slightly protrude into the face of the drawer a 1/4”. To make sure the bottom is secure. Great instructional video.

I had to laugh because I can't for the life of me understand why you wouldn't use a pocket hole to attach the cross pieces when you used them on the rest of the project.

Thanks for sharing. I've been doing this for a while now but when I first started it was a struggle when I would find plans like this that didn't quite turn out right. Alot of times this was the issue. You'd see this cute pic and what you end up with wasn't the same.
I know what you mean. Had I left this one to spec it would have looked silly being higher than the bed.
So you had the drawer opening set at 5”, then used 1/4” plywood with 2x4 sides. But yet it fits perfectly in the opening. How does that work?? I am trying to build one and have hit this, maybe I’ve done something wrong?

What size screws did you use?
Hi. I found this next to a farmhouse desk design from the same folks. It occurred to me that I could “meld” the two designs and use the nightstands as pedestals for a desktop. Then I’d have a desk with drawers. In that case do you think I should stick with the larger (taller) original measurements? Anything else you think I should consider? Thanks for the great video.

I thought about doing the x this way but really tried to do the half tab first. I spec I could fill the pocket holes and paint. No on would ever know 😁
Yes that would work. I guess there is a bunch of different ways to make the x. I am just lazy and take the least path of resistance. Remember I’m just like you doing it for the first time. I’m not a pro. Thanks for the comment

How much did it cost you to build this?
Byan, sorry but I used to many scrap pieces to give you a real number. But if you take the wood needed part of the video and google the prices on Homedepot or Lowes you could probably get a pretty good estimate.
Hey John I don’t know if you figured it out yet but the reason why your measurements were off according to Pinterest there 2 x 4 is are standing the opposite way of yours which would make yours a lot larger is probably why you had to take it apart maybe you figured this out by now but I love your videos keep doing great work thanks

Great job. In the cut list you have 1 x 2x2x8 listed, where is that used?
HTH, It would have been for the table top and the base top. I changed it up and went with the poplar. Like I always say, I make it up as I go along. Good catch I will have to edit the materials list. Thanks
How well does the drawer slide in and out without drawer slides?
Rob, that depends how well you sand the areas where the friction occurs. I sanded with 320 grit. its pretty smooth. But if there is still and issue you could always put a thin coat of polyurethane around the insert area and then it would be smooth as well. Overall with the smooth sanding I had no issues. LOL. no usually a box of 100 screws is about 9 dollars. But everything is a small fortune right now with inflation.

Any suggestions on keeping the stands square? I attempted to build these yesterday and it cracked all my 2x4’s... also it says to use 1x2’s for the braces but in the video yours look wider... are they 1x3’s in the video?
Corey, I use a speed square to ensure my saw is square. Never trust the numbers on the saw, they are always a little off. Also after cutting one piece use it as a guide to ensure all other pieces are identical. Yes I used 2x4s. Pine is soft wood so not sure what you are doing to cause them to crack. (are you using pocket holes with screws?) Also my crosses are 1x2s. Remember that a thickness is always a little smaller than the listed size. ie. a 1 inch board is actually 3/4 inch. They are exactly 2 inches in width. But you can always adjust this an play it by eye. They are just for show so make them the width of what ever you think looks good. This is why my motto for Jon's DIY is "I make this up as I go along" Because I do what looks good. You need to do what you think looks good. Thanks for your comment and don't forget to subscribe. Jon
@@JONSDIY its when I go to put the two sides together. Both sides are square and just fine, when I put the cross bars for the back and front on, even though those are square as well, when I screw them all together there is a force somewhere between the side that pulls them apart and splits the 2x4s where the pocket screws are attached. I am using pocket screws. 1 1/4” is what the guide tells me to use for 3/4” thick wood. Maybe my 2x4’s are warped somehow...
I know you went to use poplar for the top and bottom, but is that where the 2x6’s are supposed to be used for? Or the 1x10’s?
@@coreyraiche8928 Its possible your 2x4 have bowed a little from the store. Some 2x4s are wet when bought and continuously dry. I can only recommend that you cut every piece individually to fit with its own measurement and see if you can by pass the variation. Yes I used poplar instead of the 2x6s. But that's your call. I think really, anything will work here. But each board style changes the look of the table. So in my head I pictured exactly how it turned out. But I was even considering ripping the 26 in half and going a lot thinner just to keep from having to buy expensive Poplar. Yes I'm cheap :-)
how much would you think the lumber for this would be
With the price of lumber right now do to shipping shortages. I would be afraid to guess.

for the bottom cross bar do I place it at 3 inches from the bottom or 1 Inch?
NF, always your choice. But the instructions I followed said 3. After I made it 3, it looked weird so I went with 1.

@@VirtualTruckingWithNoah No worries. Your questions make me realize that I need to put more detail in my videos. I am an armature so still working on getting everything to come out right in the video. To be exact I used the 1 and a half course thread and the 1 inch Course thread from the Kreg screw starter kit found in the description. For drill bit settings there is a chart on the inside of the starter kit (under the lid). For this project it varied but the majority of setting for the drill bit was set at 3/4. (that's on the pocket jig to be clear in case I miss understood your question.) Thanks Jon.

The 2x6 is for the top of the table. In the video I substituted poplar for the 2x6 for a better finish. More stylish and less cheap looking
