    I have been doing my own dip for several months now to save money and I could never get it to last more than a week without popping off. I watched your video before my latest application and I am currently on week three with no chips or lifting! Thank you!!!!

    I'm SO happy to find a tutorial that doesn't involve buffing the natural nails! The whole reason I started doing my nails was to break the habit of biting them so they could grow and be healthy. It never made sense to scratch the hell out of them when my main goal is to keep them from being damaged.

      lol buffing if to allow it to stick and stay on the nail. i.g. u buff when getting acrylic to prevent lifting through havung a better hold of the natural nail if that makes sense. it like when clay makers scratch clay when sticking pieces together

      @@caitperez7362 Clearly not necessary tho … maybe just a light buffing but NOT the drill so common at salons … ruined my nails!

    • @kikimusicau
      @kikimusicau ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Danica Wilson Agree! It annoys me when I tell them to be careful of my natural nail and they still get the electronic drill out.
      I had a salon have 2 ladies do this to my hands 3 times through before I said something. They basically sanded my nail so far down that you could see the pink skin underneath and then my nail broke 2 days later because my natural nail was so weak underneath.

    I've been a licensed nail technician for 20 years and I'm struggling with dip powder. I stumbled upon your video, and everything you said about prep and application is exactly right. I've been practicing on myself because I can't in good conscience offer this as a service until I get it perfected. I realized watching this video that I have basically been treating the dip powder the same as I treat acrylic powder, and this may be the problem. I think I prep and finish too aggressively, so I'm going to try your techniques (and products: I just ordered the glass cuticle pusher and the Mani Boss base, activator, and two colors) and see if I get better results. Mani Boss was sold out of both the top coat and the gel base/top coat so I'll use mine and hope they play well together. I appreciate how articulate you are, I'm interested in watching your other videos to see what else I can learn. Thank you also for the product links and discount codes! :)

I bought a rubber base to go under the powder so that it would be a bit more flexible and hopefully prevent my nail from breaking (I'm pretty clumsy and I tend to hit my nails on a lot of crap). So I usually only pull back the skin on my thumbs because it is the hardest nail for me to get all the way to the sidewalls 😆 most of my other nails have skin that’s not as raised on the sides so I don’t have as much trouble. So totally personal preference! ☺️

    It’s been a month since I brought my mail dip powder kit from beetles brand. 3 weeks since I started using & testing it out on myself. I was a little disappointed in liquid applicators sizes, which holds half of product. The dip powders are really small than I assumed. The quality is really good! It’s a great starter for someone who wants to save money and do your nails at home! Less work to do compared to poly gel and using monomer. Which as a strong overwhelming smell. I can’t get use too. It’s a bit messy and lots of dust as usual, if you shape and buff your nails before and after! Prepping the nail is super important when using dip powder, this video is well spoken!! I will be buying my own glass nail filer and cuticle pusher, bristle brush as well as buffing blocks. Thank you!

    • @christylocation432

      Monomer is so bad for you and your nails it’s illegal in like 30 states for a reason I can’t stand the professionals who still use this and makes videos knowing how dangerous it is! They claim it’s just bc of how hard it gets and cure time smh glad you were put off by the smell you should look into it and let everyone know!

    Great video! Glad to find your channel. I’ve been dipping all through this lockdown here for a couple of months and I’ve not used a gel topcoat. In the past when using gel polishes, they always just pop off my nails so hence trying dipping, my question is I guess, does the gel topcoat ever peel off a dip mani? Cheers

    • @SipAndDip
      @SipAndDip  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Lisa!! Welcome to our little nail community 🥰 so gel can be a little tricky and frustrating when it comes to peeling. Peeling usually occurs because the surface it is trying to attach to is too smooth. So for example with dip powder, you would buff and file the nail and then instead of doing gel top coat, do a layer of gel base. So gel base, cure 60 sec. then do not wipe off the tacky layer and do a layer of gel top coat, cure for 60 sec. Having a layer of gel base under the gel top coat with give it something to grab onto! I personally love the mani boss 2 in 1 gel base + top because I don’t have to do the extra steps and haven’t had a peeling issue 🥰 I hope this helps!

    I haven't ordered my first starter kit yet. I trying to ensure that I am cut out for all of this first. Sounds like a steady hand application is important. That may be an issue with me. Also, patience. I can do that as long as I have a chat with myself first. Any tip on keeping a steady brush stroke?

    • @SipAndDip
      @SipAndDip  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So I do suggest doing your dominant hand first. So if you’re right handed, start your manicure on your right hand first. It helps to do your dominant hand first before you and your eyes get tired. You also have more patience when you begin rather than when you’ve already done one hand.
      To keep your hand steady I recommend keeping both hands resting on a hard, flat surface (desk, table etc). That will help balance them.
      And I know this sounds strange but don’t do your mani on an empty stomach, especially if you like coffee like me 🤣 I notice that I shake more if I try to do a mani without eating first, especially from caffeine. I’ve made it a point to film after a meal and I noticed a big difference.
      Hope this helps 💖 welcome to our nail community!

    I have very short nails in need of protection. I have been using teabags and polish. It’s a pain. It lasts one week. I stumbled on dip powder. I don’t want to go to a salon because they come at my nails with power tools. Acrylics and gells and their removal gave my nails ridges and weakened them forever. If I follow this I can say goodbye to my split to the quick painful nails and the teabags I have been supporting them with.

    Wow! Mind blown. Like many others here, I was too rough on my nails the first time around removing a salon dip. My nails are trying to grow back but some won’t stop splitting into the quick or layers lifting off. I dipped the worst ones in clear just to protect them. I am a total newbie who wants nails and COLOR! So much so I have dozens of dip jars hidden from my hubby lol with more on their way. And the glass cuticle pusher will be in the mailbox soon too. I did my right, dominant, hand yesterday (don’t judge…) and it took me approximately 7-8 hours 🤯 with adding tips. Whose dumb idea was it to add tips? On one stinking hand!!! UGH! So glad I found you this morning Chelsea. I’ll be trying your way on the left hand after lunch. There are so many things I love about your video I can’t even name them all. Not buffing the nails, a layer of dip base as a base coat (brilliant) clear, concise instructions and explanations are just a few. One of the biggest? You actually answered questions that were asked of you. I don’t see that often and I have to say BRAVO!🎉 You have a new, excited subscriber!

    Worst advice out there is to push back cuticles. Cuticles are like skin - the only barrier to infection. Once you have a nail infection, you can get a secondary infection, all of which may not - will likely not be easily or quickly remedied. I spent 4 years with infection - not from pushing back my cuticles - by putting my hand in a dishwashing glove that had old water in it unbeknownst to me. You will never take your nails and cuticles for granted again when you can’t touch anything for four years because the solution is hardly better than the problem - steroidal cream that will rip off your skin so you have no fingerprints. Or you can itch peel and blister for rest of life. Took me four years to get cuticles back and I’m not entirely out of the woods yet, I’m sensitive to my steering wheel now. Hope this message helps!

    So I know practically nothing about nails. With dip nails, can you draw designs with regular nail polish and apply stickers and rhinestones? Every tutorial I see just involves the dip powder in ombre or marbling but nothing else. If we can paint dip nails, when do you apply the polish and how do you proceed to finish?

    Chelsea, thanks a MILLION for your simple yet detailed descriptions for all the reasons why our manis fail! Started DIYing my own nails approx 2 months ago & now my nails are trashed! All my fault for doing alotta the things you caution against! I was a flood-er, too much filing & I'm paying the price with weak, bendy nails & one cracked thumb! GRACE (as you so sweetly said)! Thankfully my nails grow quickly, so when the damage is gone, I will resume dipping using your explanations as my guide! Love the coconut oil tip too! My question: Is there a gel builder out there that does not require a UV light? I do not have one & have no intention of getting one bc my 57 y/o hands don't need any add'l light! Thanks again for your amazingly simple vid! Your nails & mani are my dipping goals from now on!

I’m not sure of any builder gels that don’t require a lamp. I do know they sell gloves that you can wear to protect your hands in a lamp though! You could also do clear dip powder if you’re wanting just a clear base to protect your nails 💖

      Thank you so much for your kind feedback 🥰 I use the hot water baggie method for my soak off. Here is the step by step tutorial for that if you’re interested!
      th-cam.com/video/shbTA_S-7bY/w-d-xo.html
      I typically try to keep dip powder on my natural nails to protect them so they don’t break. Right now I’m using peel base, so I’m not soaking in acetone. Peel base allows for easy pop off removal, usually within 1-3 days. To keep up with filming it’s great, but for longevity it’s not something I would use.
      Sometimes I’ll play with gel polish on top of dip powder! That way I still have the strength of dip powder and the quick application of gel 🥰

    I’m a newbie so I have to ask…I see other videos where after you put on your base, you dip in the build powder. But I think you actually do two base coats without the build powder in between? Is that correct?

    • @SipAndDip
      @SipAndDip  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Franny! So when it comes to DIY dipping there definitely a lot of options and variations of the process. It’s largely about personal preference and what your lifestyle/nail type requires. When I prep my nails, I prefer to put down a layer of base liquid and then let it dry. Then, I start my dipping. So another layer of base liquid, then dip. Sorry if I misunderstood the question, please let me know if this helps! 💗🥰

    Does the gel top coat make the mani last longer than the dip top coat? 60 secs? Lamp or LED? Thanks! Great videos!

    • @SipAndDip
      @SipAndDip  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rosemary! This is a tricky question! So I haven’t found a difference in longevity for either dip top coat or gel top. BUT I don’t typically leave my manis on for very long due to my filming. When I have experimented with them I haven’t had an issue with either. I think with proper application they both work great! I do think it is largely based on personal preference too. I usually use dip top coat because soaking off gel can be sort of a pain.
      Gel top coat typically requires an lamp to cure for 60 sec 💗 hope this helps!

A little goes a long way with both glues. Make sure that they are nail resin brush on glues and not regular nail brush on glues (those are for doing tips and other press ones). Resins resemble closer to a gel consistency while the regular brush on glue is runny like water (free flowing).
