Jake, you are in good shape and obviously a gifted athlete, but your martial arts is lacking basic fundamental principles. No one would smack staves in the middle in a real fight. The whole point of a fight is to attack your opponent and win the fight, swinging at some arbitrary point in space only to contact the enemy's bo is pointless. Every single time you guys do that, imagine if the other guy didn't have the bo to "block," what would happen? The swing would just fly over his head and miss him completely, because you weren't aiming at anything to begin with!
Look into what is called "binden" in historical European martial arts. It involves striking a blow to claim the center space between the fighters. If your opponent does not contest this by a similar strike, you can then effortlessly flow into a thrust and finish him. I believe that is what we see vestiges of in this video. Unfortunately, it is obscured by the rest of the performance being so appallingly poor. Check out the youtube channel "Dimicator" for more on this.

Not only is it choreographed AKA not real, but it is really shitty choreography. Anyone could hit the other person at anytime if they tried. Like the moment where he pushes the staff to the ground. Just run it along the other persons staff and it's an easy hit.
Sure. But when exactly would you actually have a "real" bo staff fight in real life. 99.999% of martial arts is basically dance classes for men. Practical self-defense skills are basically a) don't get into violent confrontations, b) situational awareness, and c) sprinting. For the handful of people in professions that require real physical confrontation skills, a gun beats all other methods, and for less lethal methods, a taser or some pepper spray beats all martial arts methods. If you are a bouncer or a cop, it could be useful to know a couple jiu jitsu moves, but for the ordinary person, it's really about avoiding violence. Everything involving a staff is just for fun.

The problem is usually that a real fight is too fast to be exciting for most people, since they can't follow what is happening. Show-fighting in movies and such exaggerates movement to make it clear what is happening. There are actual trained professionals that would say all this is bullshit and train you how to defend yourself the proper way with a bo staff and what they are doing is good for sparring and that's about it and all sparring really is is just a warm up to use said weapon or to practice a certain technique
ItsJennifer This is not real. Any trained professional could tell you this is choreographed and train you in a real fight. This is a pathetic display with shit tons of wasted movements and so much exposure for the opponent, that cannot easily be covered due to the positioning they are using. I’ve never trained in any sort of martial art, and if this man was using the technique he was in this video, I guarantee I could beat his ass within a matter of seconds because this is clearly fake.
Many ridiculous moves in this one, but 3:30 really takes the cake when "yang" works his staff the long way round instead of just smacking "yin" in the face. How considerate.
@@jaimeurban6 Forms are designed to practice combinations. A real fight is where you don't know what the other person is going to do and you strip down the movement to their most efficient.
Well depending on how strong the wood is the sword may be able to cut the staff but if you had a metal or something staff it wouldn't make a difference but the only difference would be if the sword was long ranges or short ranged
Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace Why do you feel the need to make misleading video titles such as this? This is NOT a real fight, you said so yourself, so why put that title? Are your goods not good enough to sell on their own merit, that you need to trick people for views and interest?
I think some of your critics don't understand the core creativity inherent in Chinese Martial Arts , you take a form and you create your own techniques from your souls own interpretation and inspiration derived from practicing the form .
Thanks Master Mace ! Your lessons are very instructives. I'm come from France and I practice the ninjutsu. My weapon of predilection is the wooden sword. Of course, for my learning, I would like learn to control some weapon ( Bo, saï, nunchaku...)
"Real fight" aside...I knew better. lol. I've seen some of your other stuff and I know you're pretty good with that thing. My questions/criticisms are practical in nature. In the form, the two high, power strikes didn't appear to be targeted at anything other than each others staffs. So if one of the staffs failed to come up, the other would hit nothing but air. My other issue is towards the end when your staff was pinned. Why would the aggressor choose to release your staff and come all the way around to strike from the other direction when he could just simply come straight up into your face from that position?

+Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace "Great" and "Fun" are objective, and many would disagree. "Traditional" in what sense? Sin Kwan Thé was a fraud, and you will not post your lineage, so what claim do you have there? "Keep Traditional Chinese Martial Arts alive" - They are alive, and you aren't helping by presenting it in a bad light. Nobody cares about your funding, stop trying to control and divert the conversation away from the problem that people actually have with you: That you are being deliberately misleading, and employing bad practice. Lastly, you seem to be unable to respond directly to any "haters" but have plenty of time to respond to the fans, even though the "haters" seem to be the most "Liked" comments, and therefore the first that you would logically see unless you actively avoid them. I believe Jake Mace to be a true master of the martial arts! I would say he titled the video "REAL FIGHT” as a marketing technique to get the attention of seekers searching for true knowledge of "the way" and to draw attention to his online school. I learnt some Bo techniques practising martial arts in University, and I must say it is awesome, and a very good fighting technique. It is also difficult too, oh and take care of your fingers xDD Suscribed ! :D
Bo staffs, like most things used in classical traditional martial arts are nearly useless in real situations, the staff itself is a perfectly serviceable weapon, add a spear tip to it and use real techniques used for thousands of years to wage war with spears and it becomes a real, effective style. ALL traditional martial arts are in fact, rigid, useless, and will get you beat up or kill in a real situation. MMA proved this long ago, don't trust traditional martial arts or flashy technique, trust in mechanical leverage and well timed aggression. There are ways to fight that are based in real battle, and those formed to look good and creature culture.
These are great. Your videos are quite timely for my current project-in-the-works... I know my icon there is me as a Klingon, but lately I've been looking into working a Darth Maul Cyborg (Star Wars: Clone Wars) cosplay, with digitigrade legs (look that all up, you'll see) and creating the Staffsaber (it's a bit different from SWep1). I've talked with a friend who wishes to do a different Sith (Darth Talon) and she and I will work out a show routine, using many of the techniques and maneuvers you've shown here. It will take a few months (both to finish the outfit and practice the routine) But I'll try to take video and post it on my channel, then link it to yours ('course with credit for the inspiration). Thank you for your hard work Keep up the good works, Sir.
I've done klingon Batleth, single handed spear double handed spear and karate. Most of the moves in this seem to be something I've done before so I think I'll give this a go! Thanks. Oh I forgot fencing a little.
The point is a display of how you would do it. You could learn basic ways of fighting in this technique, which is better than average person, which is none.
Really want to learn how to use the Bo staff properly. This is quite good instructions, sir! - Question is if these techniques works against someone else not using a Bo staff and simply goes all in just to beat the shit out of me, and I defend myself with - say - a walking cane.
I was going to keep these comments to myself, but since it looks like you might actually try this is a real-life situation, I'll answer you for your own safety's sake: It's pretty easy to tell how useful anything this guy teaches will be in a real fight. Watch the "strike" at 3:14 and again at 3:29. Ask yourself, what are they actually striking at? A real enemy doesn't have to block that at all. He will ignore your wild swing at thin air and put you in hospital. That pointless strike is just the tip of the iceberg. Please never try this stuff in a real fight. It's just for show. If you want to use a cane for self-defense, practice some Japanese Kobujutsu, or HEMA's quarterstaff, not the American flashy stuff.
EmpiricalPragmatist Right, thanks a lot for that reply - I've kind of already "made" a make-shift bo staff, which I've put to some basic practice. But I reckon practicing "duel-fighting" like this is quite senseless, given you won't meet someone on the street that challenge you to a duel, instead of skipping the niceties and just going straight for the K.O. punch to the face. I'll make sure to look up these two things you suggested and look up other alternative 'fighting styles' that employ use of wooden weaponry - Aka in forms of a staff, cane, etc. More based on a scenario where I'm defending myself from a legit attacker, and not a duelist who've practiced the same art as I. Again, thanks for the reply. Much appreciated.
***** It's a pleasure. Just thought now, that you might also want to explore "Bartitsu", as well - specifically designed for self-defence using canes, top hats, opera cloaks and other apparel of the 19th century gentleman, because a guy called Bartholomew brought Ju-Jitsu back to England from Japan and wanted to adapt it to their dress style and equipment. It even employs the hooked handle of a cane. Don't know where you would find a teacher, though...
EmpiricalPragmatist Now that sounds like something right down my alley, if I can find a way to learn it properly! I've taken a great liking to the 19th century dressing style, which is why I mentioned canes to begin with - Knowing how to defend oneself using these things would simply just be epic. Thanks for mentioning that martial art, too!
What type of bo staff would you recommend for combat training? Such as delivering forceful blows to dummies and objects? Thank you for any recommendations.
1banryukyu as of now I do many martial arts including ji kun do,take kwon do ,kung fu,just jitsu, and of course many kubudo weapons if you would like I have a free school with many other instructors at: theopenjasmin@gmail.com
what kind of wu shu shit is this??? lol first and foremost the minute you two crossed staves the first time, me as the aggressor would have rolled my staff around yours and smacked you in the face....secondly, when your staff got snapped down to the ground, while your opponents leading leg was opened and exposed sweep your staff forward right into the shin. not to mention all that added movement and spins...waste of energy, be efficient be precise. ..strike hard, strike fast....sit there doing spins and twirls like a cheerleader and I'm going to wait for that gap an hit you....c'mon guys if you're gonna teach people, teach them right
+harly quin and you'll also note harly that is says in the title "real fight" now please explain why beginners would be even light sparring with staves? and also how any of the moves and positioning would benefit a person in an actual fight...in a movie perhaps, where everything is scripted and choreographed. ..but not a fight where your opponent seeks to win
that "wu shu" shit has been proven to work. not just because you cant grasp the concept of cumulative skill doesn't mean its bullshit. again, it is for beginners. your not supposed to do that exact thing in a fight your supposed to use the individual parts of it and sparing over time strengthens you in doing those manuvers. once again you clearly don't understand how technique works. do soccer players do ball tricks in the middle of a game? hell no. but learning them helps them to improve. let me know if u get what Im saying.
and the title was true both of them have mastered the bo staff so this is too masters essentialy showing beginers what it would look like all be it the jump was unnessecary.
+harly quin harly...i mastered the staff long ago, so i do understand the point you are trying to make...but do you understand mine? teaching weapons combat isn't about show, flash or style...it's about efficiency, economic movement, precision...and just a touch of brutal thinking. ...if facing an opponent armed also with a staff, where would you strike for first dear one??? if the answer isn't for the hands holding the staff then you aren't thinking it though the right way....my point is if you want to teach beginners how to fight, teach them right

ahh yes what every good fighting technique needs, crossing your legs
I'm working on a fight scene with a bo staff in the novel I'm writing and this is so helpful thank you so much!!!
How goes your book though
Why are you doing the spinning? Thanks.
YES! Another Bo Staff video! I'm a beginner at this weapon so this is very helpful! thank you!
Awesome!
ItsJennifer It won't be much help seeing as this guy is peddling snake oil, but at least you're having fun I guess...
I’ve never trained in any sort of martial art, and if this man was using the technique he was in this video, I guarantee I could beat his ass within a matter of seconds because this is clearly fake.
how long the bo staff ??
My friends and I in middle school would all go gather up and stick fight after school. This is about on that level
this video had me really interested in learning Chinese martial arts .. especially with the staff.
thank u by the way for this awesome video
Many ridiculous moves in this one, but 3:30 really takes the cake when "yang" works his staff the long way round instead of just smacking "yin" in the face. How considerate.
I like how people daring, sitting on the couch, "tHis iS nOt a ReAL fiGHt", but i wonder who will dare to fight for real with this guy.
I would pay to see a real martial artist kick his butt.
Yep this is a real fight.
Just like the tomatoes in my fridge are actually ogres.
this is how kong fu hustle was made
Lol the part where u r in a bad position, can he just smack u by shifting the staff?
That's exactly what I was thinking.
Im doing this all day at school but for real i do BUT THEN FASTER AND HARDER LIKE REAL FAST AND I KEEP WINING LOLL
Kata is not a real fight.
@@jaimeurban6 No it's not.
Pretty sure this isn't even a kata...
@@jaimeurban6 Forms are designed to practice combinations. A real fight is where you don't know what the other person is going to do and you strip down the movement to their most efficient.
it's an insult to kata if you call that thing kata
That's called Choreography lol
Which is stronger: Bo Staff or Sword? Tell me! :)
Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace Isn't that depends on the user of the selected weapon?
Well depending on how strong the wood is the sword may be able to cut the staff but if you had a metal or something staff it wouldn't make a difference but the only difference would be if the sword was long ranges or short ranged
Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace or just do like Harrison Ford and shot the guy ;D
Bo staff is good for multiple enemy's sword is good for taking em down one bye one
Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace Why do you feel the need to make misleading video titles such as this?
This is NOT a real fight, you said so yourself, so why put that title? Are your goods not good enough to sell on their own merit, that you need to trick people for views and interest?
2:27 what if he pulled the staff to the left taking advantage of the movement to hit the head?
Exactly, That passed up a really obvious version of taking his head off for one that was ineffective.
Where is real fight?
I think some of your critics don't understand the core creativity inherent in Chinese Martial Arts , you take a form and you create your own techniques from your souls own interpretation and inspiration derived from practicing the form .
love ur bo staff videos :)
Thanks Jemand!!! :)
My special needs son says that Bo staffs remind him of quarterstaffs.
Thank you so much Jake Mace, I really enjoy watching your videos, your one of my favorite teachers. Keep healthy and keep teaching kung fu!
Thank you for uploading video!
Cool Master~
Thanks Master Mace ! Your lessons are very instructives. I'm come from France and I practice the ninjutsu. My weapon of predilection is the wooden sword. Of course, for my learning, I would like learn to control some weapon ( Bo, saï, nunchaku...)
What martial art employs this fighting style? I think it's really cool and want to give it a go.
+Chris Everett It is the art of pinada but this is the beginner section. The advanced steps involve a blind fold and candy.
It's called Hollywood.
Here's a Message to All My TH-cam "HATERS" Out There Who Like To Spam My TH-cam Videos with Negative Hateful Comments:
"We're uploading great, fun, traditional, effective content that's purpose is to keep Traditional Chinese Martial Arts alive since Traditional Chinese Martial are currently dying! I have NEVER once advertised any of my videos! We have NEVER sponsored or put money toward any of our TH-cam videos. All our views, subscribers, and followers have found us organically on their own and our analytics say we have a 20 "Like" to 1 "Dislike" ratio! That's pretty good in my opinion! That means for every 2,000 people who watch our videos and hit "LIKE" only about 100 hit "DISLIKE". :) We get over 50,000 video views a Day and add 300 New Subscribers everyday!
We get TENS OF THOUSANDS of comments everyday on our videos and lessons here on TH-cam! There is NO WAY I can read or respond to them all. I reserve about 1 hour each day to answer TH-cam comments and I try to get to as many as I can! My wife Pam answers a couple hundred emails everyday from people who email us at www.JakeMace.com.
If you want to post your own videos about me on your channel then DO IT! I LOVE IT! If they're positive then that's great! If they're negative then that's great too! Live your life! My best!"

May I ask you under what master had you been training? Im a traditional chinese kempo along with other different stiles including mma and I had never seen this bo staff form what is it call? How can I visit you to check you around?
Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace Why call kata a "real fight" though? I like the video, but the titles are click-baity, when the content is as you say, very good. So why not drop the misleading titles and stick with the great content instead?
Ther will be haters 4everything
+Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace
"Great" and "Fun" are objective, and many would disagree.
Fraud?
One problem with that Jake, THIS SHIT IS NOT EFFECTIVE.
How can you call a choreographed fight real? Do you think fight scenes in movies are real?
Oh my god, everyone here is so mean.
I believe Jake Mace to be a true master of the martial arts! I would say he titled the video "REAL FIGHT” as a marketing technique to get the attention of seekers searching for true knowledge of "the way" and to draw attention to his online school. This man is so dedicated, gracious and full of knowledge and willing to teach it to others at a fraction of the cost...and or FREE! I consider myself blessed to stumble upon all of his deeply insightful videos. Thank you Jake Mace, you are an inspiration! Keep doing what you're doing; there are many of us that are truly grateful!
I learnt some Bo techniques practising martial arts in University, and I must say it is awesome, and a very good fighting technique. It is also difficult too, oh and take care of your fingers xDD
Suscribed ! :D
3:53 at 2x speed for MAX quiality
What a scam, lol
I like these videos and i like that there's only happy and joy rather than anything negative, other than the comments of course. Keep up the good work
"real fight" choreographed and at like 1/2 speed. wow..........................
he's never been in actual fight before. really.
"full speed"
"real fight"
3:31 he could just have taken the staff to the right of his head!
You know if always been a fan and a bow staff enthusiast but i never new how to defend myself with this until now thanks
Thank you for your hard work
Keep up the good works, Sir.
bro this is good.. i hope more video of yours.. good skill i can use it.. thanks for this. this is really usefull for me.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
nice clickbait
I've done klingon Batleth, single handed spear double handed spear and karate. Most of the moves in this seem to be something I've done before so I think I'll give this a go! Thanks. Oh I forgot fencing a little.
I expected that to be more epic...seemed slow at the end
The point is a display of how you would do it. You could learn basic ways of fighting in this technique, which is better than average person, which is none.
It's training, it's supposed to be slow
Hello, Jake Mace.
Can u tell me where u buy your staff please?
I am from portugal and sorry if i dont speak very well.
Really want to learn how to use the Bo staff properly. This is quite good instructions, sir! - Question is if these techniques works against someone else not using a Bo staff and simply goes all in just to beat the shit out of me, and I defend myself with - say - a walking cane.
I was going to keep these comments to myself, but since it looks like you might actually try this is a real-life situation, I'll answer you for your own safety's sake:
It's pretty easy to tell how useful anything this guy teaches will be in a real fight.
Hickory, oak, rattan
Good beginner bo staff.
Thank you for the good videos
who else is here because of the new episode of the walking dead?
Lol XD I'm here because of Morgan getting his ass kicked by Eastman.
+[Plataman] haha yes me :D I dont know why but i want to learn this
me lol
Alpha1BDaReaLiSeD you're welcome lmao
Saaame, I actually wanna learn it now too. That episode was really good :)))
Enjoyed this one too, Jake.
"Real fight"
are dual blade sword, like Darth Mail's Dual Lightsaber, PVP viable?
lol.don't get me wrong,i love your vids, but bo staff is my main mastery and your style could use a bit of work
no doubt,it was meant to be funny not mean, and a kids show? I don't watch tv,although my brother does
chopstick thrower
Sir
What type of 武道 or Martial Arts do you train in? And is お箸(おはし) or Ohashi chopstickes a part of the training? Osu
1banryukyu as of now I do many martial arts including ji kun do,take kwon do ,kung fu,just jitsu, and of course many kubudo weapons
if you would like I have a free school with many other instructors at: theopenjasmin@gmail.com
chopstick thrower Wow... ffs dude. Jeet Kun Do, Tae Kwon Do, Jiu Jitsu...
Chasz Hodgson lol ^^
What kind of Bo staffs are you guys using?
i think bo staff is better than sword
Subhrarani Baral The reach factor is helpful
Sir you are an excellent guru I want to learn from you!
what kind of wu shu shit is this??? lol first and foremost the minute you two crossed staves the first time, me as the aggressor would have rolled my staff around yours and smacked you in the face....secondly, when your staff got snapped down to the ground, while your opponents leading leg was opened and exposed sweep your staff forward right into the shin. not to mention all that added movement and spins...waste of energy, be efficient be precise. ..strike hard, strike fast....sit there doing spins and twirls like a cheerleader and I'm going to wait for that gap an hit you....c'mon guys if you're gonna teach people, teach them right
the video made it clear that this is for beginners bud
+harly quin harly...i mastered the staff long ago, so i do understand the point you are trying to make...but do you understand mine? teaching weapons combat isn't about show, flash or style...it's about efficiency, economic movement, precision...and just a touch of brutal thinking. ...if facing an opponent armed also with a staff, where would you strike for first dear one??? if the answer isn't for the hands holding the staff then you aren't thinking it though the right way....my point is if you want to teach beginners how to fight, teach them right
Kick ass ! , really cool keep up the good work .
WTF I CAME HERE FROM SKYRIM.
+Alex Shi Then you need to take a Bo Staff to the knee. Ending your adventures. :)
I am well rehearsed in other martial arts but its good to see someone genuinely in synergistic harmony with their style. thumbs up.

Nah, this "Xuei Hao"
Which, translated from ancient chinese, means "Scam attempt".
