64DD was responsible for so many cancelled games that we should start calling it the Nintendo 64 Development Destroyer (N64DD).

It was really hard to develop games for as most development studios were use to making 2d games before the 64 had launched

It's wild to me just how much of the N64's success was hinging on the 64DD; how many of the console's games, both released and cancelled, were originally planned for the add-on, which Nintendo then proceeded to neglect and barely release. What a poorly-handled mess all-around.

Rare kept them alive and made the 64 the legend that it was
they needed the n64dd to be sold at a minimum bar of 3.5 M units, even that, it just starting to be profitable at this number !
Rare's output during the n64 was mediocre and had very little innovation.

It's a shame there were so few RPGs on the system. They could have worked if they just left out the FMVs that were so popular back then.
PS1 managed to do it. There are so many great RPGs on the system, too many to list. I remember a rumor that someone at Nintendo said that "RPGs were boring", mainly in response to losing Square as a major developer for its consoles. I think it was just an attempt to save face.
Imagine what could have been if a) the 64dd would have released much earlier and cheaper so most N64 owners had the dd as well, or b) the 64dd was never in development to begin with so all the effort on it and it's planned games were not wasted because they were never started. All those games could have been made for the N64 to begin with and actually finished!

Super Mario RPG 2 was actually reworked into Paper Mario as there is a tittle screen showing it being called Super Mario RPG 2. There is also a test room that has the text Mario RPG on the floor.

"Super Real Island didn't sunk yet though it got very quiet around the Imagineer game. The game is now called Desert Island and leaves the player on a lonely island. In order to survive you have to harvest and breed animals. With time passing by your environment changes to your advantage and disadvantage for example with the appearing of wild predators. The game comes in 3D and shares similarities with titles like Sim-City and Populous. Work on the game has just begun (with 20% done) and it is scheduled to launch in 1999 for the 64DD."

There's not enough coverage about cancelled games out there. There are too many full games being lost to time, and information on games that never could make it are getting completely erased. Great job cataloguing so much
Still hurts my hear that Contra Spirits 64 was cancelled for the Nintendo 64. I first heard about the game in a 1997 issue of NEXT GEN MAGAZINE. What a great magazine that was besides Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM).

BUT FIRST, we need to talk about Parallel Universes.
To know that the company that made Body Harvest became Rockstar North is fascinating. I honestly wish they'd made a sequel, or a remake of it. The game was a fever dream, but yet it was so enticing as a game. I'd say it was much more innovative than most games at the time

Would've liked to see a possible sequel to Mission Impossible there were elements in that game which were rather unique. Also, nice touch leaving the CIA Rooftop track from the game playing in the background at 34:37. The soundtrack was killer

I feel as though I remember playing something similar to the Ceasers palace, but the name seriously sticks out to me as maybe what I played. some sort of demo or something maybe? This was back here in the UK where pirated cds of n64 games to play on the Dr64 were super common

Possibly the game I would personally be most interested in playing would be that Pokemon RPG. That Young Olympians game sounds like it would have also been interesting.

Love this, this GOLD. I loved my N64, but the game droughts where horrible. Still got 3 of the best 10 games ever IMO. Mario64 has held up amAZINGLY.
When I was a kid game droughts weren't even felt because we had no money to buy any games at all so for all I knew there were dozens of great games released every day

wow I think the last baseball game i played was on nes in 1990!
carts were expensive to order and you had to guess the right amount as the publisher or you would be left holding thousands of unsellable carts (ala glover). publishers were weary of the n64, hence why so many mediocre n64 games never found a publisher. ps1 was more profitable, and also had a lot more shovelware by extension, but it was easier to get a publisher on board for an only okay ps1 game.

As much as I enjoy pikmin, I really would have liked if mario 128 wasn't turned into it. You can just tell they had so much planned for it, but we saw none of that because of so many development issues.
I like to think the Mario ideas ended up in subsequent Mario games. That's what we do. Any idea we don't ship in one game ends up in another.

That's a real shame about the N64 Chrono Trigger remake, it looked really good for fan work, especially limited to 64 specs. Hope they got to go on to something equally cool for them.
