All these years I figured "Pokémon RPG 64" was just a misunderstanding and that it was actually Stadium. I didn't expect it to end up being Snap instead.
when it comes to pitching an fully fledged 3d pokemon rpg game especialy knows they had dev kits or sorts should go pain in the butts to even run on back then, probaly ign themself kinda predicted pokemon collosseum way before was even in current plans even if was misunderstanding could gotten far fetched is the closest as we ever gotten to an pokemon rpg. but still during the ds era the no 3d rpg pokemon game was even been created but theyr competitors such spectrobes and fossil fighters did.

I was asked not to say who the source was (till the NDA expires of course, it'll obviously be public when the screenshots come out), but I will say your assessment includes some incorrect assumptions. Particularly, that the NDA's in question were signed ~20 years ago, or are covering info/images that were first disclosed ~20 years ago.
EDIT: For folks seeing this later. I was responding to a paragraph-long comment saying that whoever told me (the guy who wrote this video) that some NDA's were expiring this year was lying to me. He deleted his comment after the above reply.

11:06 That's the first time I've heard the sales strategy for the 64DD and I'm honestly left speechless, I have no idea how Nintendo thought that was going to succeed.
I heard something somewhere that the Randnet service for 64DD could only support 4,000 or so people at a time in a given region, so they decided to do that so 30,000 people wouldn’t log on day one or something. Regardless, it’s dumb
Particularly given they never bothered releasing it outside Japan. They called it a failure, yet never truly released the thing, moreso just provided it to a large-scale group of beta testers for a monthly fee.
@dalekthal9569 Given worldwide releases were a rarity back then, localisations usually taking some time, and with Japanese developers not really thinking about overseas markets as they do now, the thing would likely come out in the West when the Japanese DD was already discontinued. Not to mention they would have to secure a Internet provider for each region, which would probably cost more than it's worth.

I should mention about the MOTHER 3 N64 thing.
We in the EB64 server already had confirmation from a former NOA employee about a build coming to the west for review, but we heard that it was a build in 2000 coming in that had very early localization work (likely a pitch for a full localization).
This is the first time we've heard about even more prototypes reaching America, and these sound like even earlier builds.

I’ve always enjoyed DYKG, especially as a middle schooler hearing never before secrets… like Mario 2 was a game called Doki… you get it.
With that said, seeing the glow up in recent years, with DYKG entering a entering investigative journalism at a level you don’t see in this space too often, has been low-key inspiring. Just shows you can continue growing even after you find a formula that works

64DD doesn't make a lot of sense outside of Japan, but when you realize that IN Japan the N64 was losing the console war for most of its life, you get it. Over here it was neck and neck with PlayStation for a long time, but in Japan, PS1 was in first, followed by SEGA Saturn, with N64 at the bottom of the three. So, since the the Famicom Disk System was a success in Japan, and since PS1 and Saturn both used CDs, the Nintendo 64 Disk Drive made sense as an idea to increase the N64's abilities and use the higher storage of floppy disks compared to proprietary cartridges, it was a way to compete with SEGA and Sony.
Since it was so expensive, had no games, and released quite late in the console's life, it's obvious to see why it failed- that's exactly what happened with the SEGA 32X ~5 years prior. But even the fucking 32X could be bought in stores, I have no idea what Nintendo was thinking with the mail-order thing.

If this adds any context, the Satellaview was also a mail-order thing (and even back then people were complaining it made the stuff needlessly difficult to obtain), so it seemed that for some reason this was a pattern of behavior Nintendo had.
It's very sad that this add on failed. I think it might have been the platform that pushed for custom made content the most outside of PCs. So many great ideas. We are lucky that so many of them moved to the regular 64/GBA/GCN. But it's just not the same.
It also really screwed Nintendo's software schedule during that generation. And yet they gave us so many legendary titles.
Had it be its onw console, it would have been a sucess. Even if Nintendo only stuck with cartridges from the get go, that would have been better. As it stands, it's a failed sucessor to the Disk System only...
It's honestly tragic how these lost games, especially Project Dream, exist and are so close to being found but the people with them won't release them. I get it for former employees, but people who got it on auction have no excuse.
If more people play it, their copy is less special and, thus, less valueable. This is what they think...

If someone makes high-quality scans of paintings, are the real genuine paintings then devalued because the digital copy exists for anyone to see? I'd say no, because the real genuine paintings are still the _real genuine paintings._

The original Japanese Pokémon Stadium does actually contain models for all 151 Pokémon, so you can at least see them all in 3D. It's just that you can't use most in battles.

I usually skip sponsors as quickly as I can, but I have to admit this one actually worked on me. Of course it helps that it wasn't trying to sell me nut-shaving equipment or mail order cereal or something dumb like that.
Earthbound 64 needs its own dedicated video. It’s long overdue
honestly what is there to say about it that hasn't already been said or touched on in their videos so far? Itoi tried making the entry on 64, didn't like how it was going, and shifted development to produce it on gba. A lot of the beta content that's been made public in one way or another about Mother 64 has already been picked pretty dry by dykg
@@ltcaphide there’s still tons of information we don’t know anything about. DYKG is really good for translating interviews and articles that haven’t been that reveal new/important information. That and they would be the biggest platform giving this game attention, leading to more interest and more things being found out.
I second this, many videos already exist for Eb64 but none can compare to the quality of DYKG
All I really care about is specifically how the plot was different from the Mother 3 we ended up getting considering it was supposed to be a much darker game. At this point I highly doubt we're going to see anymore screenshots or footage of the game and the prototype is probably never getting leaked, so I'd be more than happy with additional plot details getting divulged
@@someusername1872exactly we know such surface level facts and tidbits about the story and mechanics. Feel like so much of that information is blocked by a language barrier. That mixed with the fact that the Mother IP is half owned by Itoi makes me think they would care less about developers talking compared to something like URA Zelda. That game has had so many videos on this channel despite it having no real information to it. EB64 is so different in my opinion

Crazy how Nintendo had more ambitions and ideas for online gaming on N64 than they did on the Gamecube.
The Pokemon Snap dev history was hilarious. Miyamoto and the gang thought they were doing these devs such a great favor and were going to get an amazing game out of it, and in the end, all they got was eleven terrified developers, a photo taking app, and a fridge.

I LOVE hearing about the DD and Satellaview and everything related to preservation and the history of games, this was seriously such a treat. I swear if the N64dd and features of the ique player (specifically it's feature to save games off kiosks) Nintendo would of never had competition except maybe Sega with the Dreamcast, Nintendo had some wild innovative stuff and never gave it a chance

N64+64DD probably had almost as many cancelled/rumored/visionary games as actual released N64+64DD games. N64 games were a nightmare to develop for smaller studios, since you had to have actual SGI-computers then, which were unreal expensive for that time.
At 1998 Nintendo offered plugins to use regular Windows PC for creating N64 games via programs like 3D Studio Max.

I’m in the US and I remember being in the car with my older brother and us talking about getting the DD and OOT for it. I was probably 7 or 8 YO. Just goes to show how far this was a promised console for the US which then never happened.
Huh. So Fire Emblem 64 had a bunch of character names that would be used later in other Fire Emblem games... Interesting.
It's almost unbelievable how ambitious and forward-looking many of these unrealized concepts were. Parts of this video honestly feel like one of those"BotW was originally planned for the NES but they couldn't make it due to the technical limitations" parodies. The concept of forums for each game where players could upload their own stuff was later implemented through Miiverse on the Wii U. I wouldn't have imagined the concept dated so far back... Just imagine how innovative it would've been back then, before the modern social media platforms Miiverse competed with.
When looking at it all, it's hard not to feel the N64 was incomplete, if incredibly ahead of its time, and it was in big part due to the decision to use cartridges; as impressive as the DD's features were, they couldn't have relied on a costly add-on that required a subscription.
I have to say, "Wall Street" has to be one of the most intriguing games on this whole list. Who knows if it actually was as good as they described, but I'm just fascinated with the idea of a game that may sound like a boring finance simulator on the surface but is actually a fantastic killer app.
Given Nintendo's penchant for relentlessly overpromising in the 90s, I have to assume Wall Street was never anything actually exciting.

Thank you, Tony, this two videos, alongside your own in your channel, have given me the full insight of the 64 DD. I remember we wanted one with my brothers, and we would always discuss what amazing games could come out on it. As it turns out, it was a turd, but a very interesting one, nonetheless.
I've seen quite a lot of fan art where people draw N64s with DDs.
Ocarina of Time is actually just under 26MB in size. 32 is the theoretical maximum size the cartridge can handle, not necessarily the size of the game. It was too big to fit on the 16MB cartridge so they had to use the 32. Also, the largest N64 cartridge ever made was 64MB (that one was used for RE2).

@@DJIVision He wasn't quite the main character of NJPW per se, he was only the ace of the Jr Heavyweight division for almost all of his career besides a brief try at the Heavyweight division. Back in the 90's New Japan had 3 aces (top guys) they nick named The Three Musketeers in the press. Masahiro Chono, (who by then was the top heel) Keiji Muto (AKA The Great Muta, his demonic alter ego he brought from his time in WCCW and WCW after a very long US excursion) and the late Shinya Hashimoto, who was the top ace of the musketeers
@@HandlebarOrionX Sorry, I should've said the main character of the game. I don't know if he actually is (I only played a little bit), but he's pretty prominently featured in the opening cutscene, and iirc he's the only one whose outfit really stands out from the rest. All the other characters wore black or gray outfits that didn't look all that unusual, but then Liger's like... lol well, you know. He stands out. And for me at least, who knows very little about NJPW, he was the most memorable character, and the obvious choice to play as right off the bat.

I recall seeing some other interesting videos that go back to the subject of Fire Emblem 64. You may want to look up the development history of Kaga's notable post-Nintendo project, which became known as Tear Ring Saga. I recall hearing that during Nintendo's first lawsuit against Kaga, they had accused him of taking assets from Fire Emblem 64 to make Tear Ring Saga, which would have been the impetus to completely scrap that project in the first place. I don't know if there's any actual evidence of this, and it's always possible Nintendo may have pumped up the allegation to make their case, but it's probably the best explanation for why a project that Miyamoto thought was significantly far along, going on schedule, and could had easily been moved to cart, would suddenly get scrapped.
As I said in the previous video, it is kinda funny that Nintendo really wanted to make a "every copy is personalized" game for real on the Nintendo 64.
I wonder if they would have actually made it had the N64 had more power than the actual console released for everyone.

I like to imagine that if the 64DD was a success, then Super Smash Bros 64 could've gotten a DD disk expansion that included new characters and stages, maybe online play, or maybe even a stage builder with the ability to share created stages online.

I wonder what the point is to to keep a nearly 30 year old cancelled project secret. I'm not talking about Goddard, I'm sure he has perfectly valid and legal reasons why he can't talk about it. I mean from Nintendo's POV, what could they have been doing 30 years ago that would warrant "network zelda" to be so secretive?
I think the only logical answer is that during their tests they accidentally tapped into communications between aliens so the gubnet had to shut em down.
Because telling people about it is game preservation and that's bad for games.
Nintendo's years of tech & libraries are very important to them, and for any reason they can choose to revisit them on a dime.
Will we get a ai generated Zelda game where every game copy is personalized anytime soon? Probably not. However, whatever they cooked for all that tech is in their pockets, and not in the grasps of Nintendo's competitors. They're probably not going want to share them to aspiring developers either.
Either that, or Nintendo is bluffing about this tech because they are egotistical on what they claim to have done. It's like that claim that Miyamoto said that Minecraft resembles what they've done for the N64, yet refuses to elaborate it on what he actually means. Possibly Miyamoto is just jealous of Minecraft's success that Nintendo couldn't do it before western developers did. lol

So the mysterious "Namco RPG" WAS a Tales game! Now I'm more intrigued, wonder if we'll ever see anything about that lost entry. The franchise's 30th anniversary is next year, so, hoping Namco decides to treat it with dignity and give us some insight about it.

Admittedly, though, looking at "Aria", they probably split her into Malon and Saria. She resembles Malon more than Saria, while the name is obviously one letter short of Saria.

It's very sad that this add on failed. I think it might have been the platform that pushed for custom made content the most outside of PCs. So many great ideas. We are lucky that so many of them moved to the regular 64/GBA/GCN. But it's just not the same.
It also really screwed Nintendo's software schedule during that generation. And yet they gave us so many legendary titles.
Had it be its onw console, it would have been a sucess. Even if Nintendo only stuck with cartridges from the get go, that would have been better. As it stands, it's a failed sucessor to the Disk System only...
