    GameBoy proved that weak hardware doesn't stop you from making great games.

    • @Tinbeef22
      @Tinbeef22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That's true but with more capable hardware you can even make better games.

      I hope Nintendo keeps being weaker than the competition though. Easy to emulate instead of paying $60 for old games. Gamepass is doing great things for consumers

      Do you guys know about other games like Links awakening who's origins begun as fun sideproject that weren't intended as actual games?

    • @cmbaz1140
      @cmbaz1140 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      actually its the hardware limitations that force you think outside of the box and this results in classic games being born...
      modern gaming lacks this the game designers have been spoiled with good hardware...

    Link's Awakening was so colorful and care-free that one developer also included a fishing mini game just for fun; also it was partly inspired by the surreal Twin Peaks... the duality of man

      In the original version you can use the screen skip trick to warp the fisherman into the tree to the south of him and then "go fishing" it will take you to broken glitch world with invisible broken pathways to any place in the game as well as inaccessible areas. However if you didnt leave this "glitch world" in specific way you would be stuck there wandering in broken pixels and horrid glitch amalgam enemies and solid floor tiles that you can swim through or fall through.

    The fact that Gold and Silver had a very obscure anti-cheat, means that Nintendo was well aware of people who exploit the trading features of the mainline games as well as the glitches found in the first generation of games, so Clair is effectively self aware of the glitchy reality she resides in. When triggering this anti-cheat, the game effectively has banned you from finishing the game.

    • @maximumrisk2004
      @maximumrisk2004 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would hope Clair still eases off when you actually complete the Dragons Den.

    • @DragoonMS
      @DragoonMS ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's not the only one. If you use a GameShark code to get all the badges before you actually beat the gyms, there's a guy in Mahogany Town who sells RageCandyBar who blocks the east exit to Route 44 and normally leaves once you got the seventh badge (Pryce's Glacier Badge)...yeah, you hack the badges in, HE WILL NOT LEAVE. EVER. You're screwed and have to basically start the entire game over. Unlike Clair, this guy won't call you out for cheating...he just keeps doing his normal thing of pestering you to buy the candy and won't leave even after beating Pryce. Same for Crystal, too.
      So Nintendo was probably also aware of the fact that people were using cheat devices, which they were adamantly against to the bitter end.

    I welcome the switch to more longform and indepth videos. I think preserving videogame history and talking to devs while it's still relatively easy is super important. Even more so as games with mandatory online components become the norm. One fascinating video I recently watched was about restoring the online hub in MHTri after Nintendo shutdown the servers. Things like these are at risk of being lost to time.

    Ya know, I love emulation, flash carts, etc. Essentially, any way that lets me play roms. For multiple reasons of course. I love the ease and convenience of having all of my games in a big list that I can just pick and play. I can also play games that I missed out on. AND, the biggest reason, being able to play games from other regions. For example, Pokemon Trading Card Game 2. There's a whole english translation you can find online. I can play that english translation on my actual Game Boy Color or even GBA (or any number emulation devices). I played the hell out of the original Pokemon TCG on GBC, and being able to play the Japan-exclusive sequel is amazing. And over the years, I've managed to play so many non-english games, in english, that I'd otherwise never get to play. Even more recently, playing Monster Hunter 2 on PS2.
    The Game Boy line of consoles are probably my favorite games to play, ever. Through emulation or real consoles, I can play pretty much anything from old MS Dos and Atari 2600, up to Xbox Series S/X games. Yet I go back to Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance more than anything else. I have flash carts to play on a real handheld, I have a handheld emulation console, and I have emulators on my Xbox. I play Game Boy more than I play my actual modern Xbox games.

    8:25. "We'll keep that in mind going forward." That's such a powerful courtesy and the Zelda franchise has continued to shine. Not perfect, but certainly coming into it's prime. That's the difference between Zelda games and the contemporary Pokemon main series experiences. When fans make an uproar about something, they listen, and if nothing else, they take it seriously for future game developments. I want great pokemon games back with all the love, sweat, and tears they used to bring with them. If they just had more of that kind of attitude we'd have better games too.

    21:48 Nintendo use to make those knock-off legos, when it was a toy company... So there is a reason for it.
