Widely considered the grandfather of first-person shooters, Wolfenstein and its lengthy history know both the thrill of victory and the agony of failure. The franchise’s 2009 entry, the Raven Software-developed Wolfenstein, marked a particularly low point for the series, leaving many to ponder whether protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz’ Nazi-killing days had finally come to an end. MachineGames, however, a Swedish studio founded by former Starbreeze developers, proved approximately five years later that B.J. still had plenty of fight left in him.
The team successfully pitched a new direction for the IP to series creator id Software and publisher Bethesda Softworks, proposing an alternate history, post-World War 2 narrative wherein the Nazis claimed victory. MachineGames’ ensuing partnership with the companies culminated in 2014’s Wolfenstein: The New Order, 2017’s Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, and The Old Blood expansion in between. These adventures cast a darker, more serious tone over the franchise that ultimately led to B.J.’s transition into a family man. And killing Nazis, inherently, became integral to the proverbial family business.
Thus, Wolfenstein: Youngblood dropped players into the roles of Jess and Soph, B.J.’s twin daughters who, by the 1980s, had grown old enough to infiltrate Nazi-controlled Paris but remained young enough to embark on a relatively lighthearted coming-of-age journey. On paper, the premise worked flawlessly; in practice, Youngblood crumbled under the pressure of cooperative gameplay, light RPG elements, and an open-ended structure-all qualities that went unexplored in MachineGames’ previous projects. Consequently, the final product came across as a hollow shell of the Wolfenstein experience that millions grew to associate with the brand.
This is the tragedy of Wolfenstein: Youngblood.

For me, they sound like two try-hards that try very unnecessarily hard to act tough.
It seems like a trend when a great franchise main character “has to” pass the torch to the next generation… it turns to utter garbage. Really emphasizes how much the main character makes the game. Detaching the MC can rip out the heart and soul of the game.
exactly and have annoying characters isnt the right way to do it either
Well that is not always the case tho. Sure you do remember the worse offenders over the years, but there were some good example that did them right. You have to be very very good at making the replacement well deserve which is not something you can easily master.
@@Deliveredmean42 I'd love to see them replace Doomguy/Doomslayer with a new character called Doom Girl. Perhaps they could give her a wacky side-kick that fulfills several stereotypes at once whilst also ticking boxes on the PC checklist? The developers could then use these two new characters as flag bearers for how special and original and #relatable they are. The new characters will also give them excuse to write a new narrative through an insincere post-modern lens to "shake up the franchise" and make it #relatable by shoe-horning contemporary "social issues" by which I mean partisan wedge issue ideologically driven politics so it can "appeal to other people" because "Wolfenstein is for them and everyone" and that journalists and people who don't play the game on Twitter will really love it. Maybe they could retcon everything else that has happened in previous games along the way.

I'd like to meet the person(s) who greenlit this endeavor after reading the script. Like a serious conversation with them. Just so I can ask them, in what way did this seemed like a good idea?
Agree, I bet they felt pressure from external forces.
My exact thoughts after playing TNO, which frankly isn't too far off from this game's script given what I've seen of it. It's just MORE of what TNO had.
It doesn't work that way, the game was greenlit before the script was made. That's honestly part of the problem, but there isn't really a way to avoid that, since you're not going to make a script if the game isn't greenlit.
@@Gordy3000
I find it extremely hard to believe that there was no input from anyone higher up. During the development of this game.
Concepts change all the time for games. Scripts are rewritten gameplay is reworked. Things are removed or added during development. And then finally is approved before being sent out for print. This wasn't some small instance that flew past the developers. They knew what these guys were doing an approved of the final product.
@@Snicketbar yea, it's a bit interesting, but if it was approved from higher up it was presumably because it seemed similar enough to other high budget games that had done reasonably well. In the end that's usually the only thing many executives look at. They don't even necessarily know what works or not, just high concept things such as ok, "dark stories" "Edginess" and "violence" sell, dose the game has these themes and aspect?
This is of course not always the case, but it's quite surprising sometimes when you hear how many of these people evaluate concepts and ideas. Many sales analysts only ever look at the data, the players and viewers may say they hate the game, business model, movie or whatever, but as long as the sales goes well that's the only real determining factor.

They should have used Army Of Two as an inspiration. No bad half baked rpg elements and replaying levels. A linear two player story with cool weapon unlocks. You can make a linear co-op game that also focuses on great team work elements and tactics
New order & Old blood seemed to hold onto some of the creepy & interesting elements from the best entry in the series IMO Return to castle Wolfenstein, New colossus was a movie interrupted by gameplay, with New blood trying to be 80's retro-reconstruction.

Only then they consider to change the approach.
And that should be done to each publisher that smeared themselves in such of an abomination.
New Order have such a different tone compared to its two sequel. It’s definitely the best out of the three. Even the character models were so much better in New Order, like B.J and Anya
New Order was amazing in every facet I agree. I really havent kept up with the franchise due to life but was surprised to see this in my YT recommends. I guess it was only a matter of time, many franchises go through cycles hopefully BJ prevails

youngblood is trash, but just fyi that quote is about the new colossus. it refers to how players can optionally go back to each area to get any collectibles they missed instead of having to start the game or level from the beginning. as opposed to Youngblood where the game just forces you to go revisit areas over and over whether you want to or not
@@alexisgutierrez7634 colossus came before youngblood, so they def used the same design reasoning for that.
I'll always appreciate a studio trying something different, but inherently that means potential progress OR failure. Top down decisions from non devs after a large success has fucked up many franchises. That success comes from talent, not managers tossing ideas at a wall.

Thanks for the video and the research as always!
I hope they make a 3rd game, and in the beginning, we understand that all of old blood, was just a dream BJ had during a second coma, that is a result of an attack on him and his people, resulting in him being the lone survivor, and the game can be about him trying to first remember what happened to him, and then taking revenge that will end in him destroying something (such as a core) that results in destruction of Nazi's regime. A game in which you could even cause/lead rebellions worldwide(they can even picture him like he lost his face during the attack, hence the nazis couldn't find out who he was/is. The game might even have some sort of RPG vibe, in which your actions and decisions matter, and might even have multiple ending, for example a bad ending in which he dies despite achieving his goals, or a secret one in which he fails, but in the last hours uses a time machine to return to 1945 and manipulates the timeline to cause our timeline. He even might get his hands on the machine because it was a nazi secret project, or because some dude from future appeared and told him what to do, or even because of some alien/supernatural reason. Damn, they have many choices! (Also, sorry if that was long)
It still hurts, after the lukewarm recepction of The New Colossus they had two choices, go back to the new order style of storytelling or go with the new colossus style, they chose the wrong one.
they should of made more like the new order tbh, its considerably better, the story alone makes it replay-able, and the weapons/ ect are better (talking about TNO)
At least we got the Blade Of Agony this year.
we have sniper elite and zombie army
cant wait for sniper elite 5
and sniper elite VR the best
And then twitter had to ruin it
3:51 Now that's an old Toby Maguire
A scenario where BJ had to save or protect his newborn daughters would've been an actual sequel, because it fits into the character: a nazi-killing turned family man who would go to hell to save his family. Youngblood was just a slap in the face of everyone who loved the franchise. Put incompetent people with an agenda in charge of things and this is what happens: it matters not what the CUSTOMERS want to play, but what THEY want customers to play. It is unfortunate that this is the direction large part of the industry is headed to.
Why is having playable twin sisters inherently a problem? They could have been good characters but they're just really cringe.
@@gamerinatrance3618 That’s my point. It wasn’t hard to make something everyone would enjoy, and I gave just a single example of how it would’ve been a cool storyline while also fitting how the the franchise has ever been. But it was so poorly done that even if they tried to make it bad on purpose it would’ve been better than how it came out. Most people play Wolfenstein to play as nazi-killing hero William J. Blaskowicz, so if you’re going to make such a drastic change to the main character it has to be so amazing that people forget about it. It was precisely the opposite.

@@brndonlu9635 after seeing the quality of the new colossus
I'm not sure I want a Wolfenstein 3
Playing Youngblood was *technically* fun despite glitches (I played co-op with a friend) when it was released, but it felt like a corporate move more than a story continuation imo.
Wolfenstein is such a great series, I wanted to like Youngblood, but the writing for BJs kids just didn’t compare to the writing for BJ in the previous games. BJ represented so much about what it means to be victim of hate while still having privilege, and using that privilege to your advantage when tearing down an inhumane/hateful system.
It’s double disappointing because wolfenstien was one of the few l games that didn’t pull punches for action, humor or character writing while still having a sincere message. That’s a hard balance and they missed the mark.
Highly recommend Jacob Geller’s video about Wolfenstein for more details about why it’s such an important series, it’s a top notch video imo.
If they really wanted the co-op mode, they should've made it so that Player 1 is BJ, and Player 2 is either Fergus or Wyatt. And if there was only one player, the other would be an NPC companion. This would also help continue with the diverging Fergus/Wyatt timeline feature of New Order and New Colossus.
Its hard to describe how perplexing this misstep was.
I remember being excited for this game....then it turned out to be one of the worst games I've ever played

@@dibberz-v1z What's wrong with The New Colossus? I want 2 play the series from The New Order but Youngblood is garbage by the looks of it and this is keeping me from getting into the series.
@@aviralverma2944 The New Colossus is less of a game and more of an interactive cutscene movie. There's even a section of the game that forces you into a walking sim for literally half-an-hour. This cutscene is not only terrible, it ruins much of the mystique about BJ's character because it bangs us over the head with this laughably tragic backstory. A backstory which contradicts itself from the implications of The New Order. When you do get to play the game, the level design is so confusing that you'll be forgiven for bumping into a door that leads nowhere several times. Basic player level pathing is out the window, with exploration being almost completely gutted.
Then there's the story as a whole, it's cringe to say the least. It's bad and it gets worse the more it drags on, but what makes it worse is that the writers of the the game are obviously aware of how horrible it is. Which is why they introduce these surreal bouts of humor that completely ruin any tension the game may have had, with the new characters only exacerbating the problems. And the new characters, if that's what you can generously call them, are nothing more than mouth pieces for the writers' political dogma appealing to an audience that will never support them.
