Something nice about your vids is I can watch something from 4+ years ago on YOUR channel and the quality and style isn't garbage. =)

Thanks for the rundown on the games. I do like plug and plays but recently acquired a real 7800. Also have a Retron 77.

I remember my now ex-girlfriend owning one of these and I played it while she was at work. The whole experience was absolutely painful for me. Go figure the difference between this and the far superior Flashback 2 was night and day. I only wish the current iterations, even the 8 Gold would go back to the actual hardware used in the 2 and 2 Plus.

Always appreciate your informed and fair reviews. I have a couple of plug n plays, and I'm always on the lookout for another good one. This, alas, does not appear to a good one.

I own a 7800 and love it (not so much the controllers; usually use a Genesis controller instead). But I had never picked up the original Flashback until I was walking past my local game store and noticed where someone had pitched one in the trash can in front of the store!
So I took it (it included everything, believe it or not) and tried it out. Probably the game I was most interested in was Planet Smashers. I played that one but ultimately didn't get very far (due to the fact I was apparently playing it wrong). So I suppose it was worth the grand price of free, but not much more :)

The people behind it were only given ten weeks to complete it, well that is similar to why many original 2600 titles were not as good as they might have been back in the day due to crazy time restraints and pressure to get them done and rushed out asap.

Fyi, you can probably use these controllers on other Famiclone systems that have 9-pin controller ports.

I LOVE the Flashback 1's controllers. My mother got me this as a surprise gift when I was in college and it reignited my Atari love, so this system has a very special place in my collection. I spent many anhoir playing Haunted House, Solaris, and Saboteur on this system.

The Flashback 1 is an odd thing but kind of a special blip as an official Atari product. It's basically 20 NES versions of 2600 and 7800 games, intended to be faithful recreations, played with an Atari styled joystick. Of course, they could have been more faithful (that's being particularly polite to some games here) but these things are designed to replicate the game experience without replicating the hardware. There will always be compromises but emulating the real, original Atari games on later Flashback versions was a more authentic approach to start out with.
I got most of these Flashback 1 games working on an original Super Nintendo yesterday. Here's my video explaining and showing that... th-cam.com/video/1sC0phsIqug/w-d-xo.html

It cannot be more stranger then this, why porting over atari 2600 games to a noac based system(they might as well just could make a nes cart with those ported atari 2600 games on it as well)
And since they had only 10 weeks to port over those games,i would be not surpriced if they usef semi auto toolkits to quickly port over those games, also since those systems do have similar chipsets inside them ,
BTW am surprised that they also ported games from the more powerful atari 7800 to the noac chipset since the atari 7800 could view 34 more sprites on screen then the nes could but they did a nice try but it feels misleading,no actual atari 2600 & emulation,no clone or fpga based version of it,but just ports
    instead,
maybe they did this to get rid off there dozens of noac chip, mmm haha,
But what about next, making a master system classic based on a noac chip and port all those sms games to it or vice versa???
Or how about making a snes classic based on a noac chip and then port over those 16bit games,BUT to fake 16bit graphics & sounds they could use all kinds of tricks along with using those mapper enhancement chips such as the mmc5 chip,
    to make that happen
    🤣

I know this is an older video, but I just found it. I wasn't impressed with the first flashback Atari. I did however get a flashback 2. I wasn't impressed with the selection of games on it either, but I have the intentions of adding a cartridge port for that real Atari experience

  • @GeneralVanRyberg

Do you remember whether its Adventure port is different than the Adventure port on the Atari TV Games Plug N Play System? :)
OFFTOPIC: I got this one back in 2004, finding this stuff in my country (Holland) was unusual and I simply had to pick it up. Later I bought a real Atari 7800. Thanks for this review, I fully agree with it. What I particularly like about your reviews is that they are thoughtful and you do not shout cheap insults every few seconds (and imitate being angry) like *so many* other TH-cam reviewers, therefore I've been a Patreon for some time.

I remember buying this new at Target and being very excited about it. But once I played it....BLECH! Terrible. It actually made me angry. I had to get rid of it to get my blood pressure back down.
Thankfully, the Flashback 2 was just about the most awesome thing ever, and it mostly cleaned away the bad memories of this hot mess.

I'm sorry. I liked both the ATARI 2600 and the ATARI 7800. And I wouldn't even buy this. If it's a 7800 Flashback, it should just be ATARI 7800 games. If you want to have ATARI 2600 games, but an ATARI 2600 FLASHBACK.

this isnt a "plug and play". plug and plays are a small controller hooked up by only composite rca cables. this uses rca cables, a plug in controller, AND a DC jack.
So it is not a plug and play but I feel like they could've really removed the dc jack. it seems unesssary

EWWW the original Atari flashback, I seriously wouldn't bother with it outside of perhaps for the novelty and I got it for pretty much the next to nothing or was given to me. I do have a flashback 2 which is pretty great and I haven't bothered with another Atari flashback since and I'm good quite frankly.
