I finally got mine in from Dollar General ($20) I ordered it online. I never owned a Colecovision, I owned an intellivision. I'm having a good time with this little unit. It's going to be great for rainydays. Great review.
I know this video was made in 2014 but I just watched it for the first time here in 2021 and wanted to comment anyway. I had a Colecovision and the Adam as well. My favorite game on CV was the licensed game "Wargames" based off of the 1983 movie starring Mathew Broderick. The game used overlays on the number pad, featured a difficulty setting from 1 - 8 (the thermonuclear war setting) and was created by Coleco staffer Joseph Angiolillo who had studied game design elements under the legend Gary Gygax of the DnD and TSR games. Angiolillo would go on to become one of the RPG Pathfinder's contributors as well as many other projects in gaming. Since Coleco no longer has the Wargames license, I'm not at all surprised they couldn't put Wargames on this modern Flashback but it is still sad to see a "ColecoVision" without my favorite game. I have seen the Flashback at my local Dollar General within the past couple of years and might pick it up any way just for nostalgia. My 8 year old likes to play atari era games on plug and play systems so he might enjoy the ColecoVision Flashback, too. Great review!
The things I loved about the ColecoVision was that it had 1) better graphics than the 2600, and 2) it had a 2600 add-on module. That made it a no-brainer to get the CV.
What made the coleco in the early 80s were the almost perfect arcade ports of popular licensed games without them it's not the same but it has some nice games I never knew existed and I used to own a coleco
Excellent video! I too got my Colecovision Flashback on Thanksgiving for $28 from Dollar General, and I thought it was a great deal! Even though I remember playing a next-door neighbor's CV back in the day, I never owned an original then. I was lucky enough to do some horse-trading a couple of weeks ago and got me a CV in the box with several games and I can testify that the controllers on the original tend to be very stiff to me, The stick is a bit clunky and I have to press really hard on the left button to get any kind of response (thankfully you can use an Atari or Sega controller instead). The CVF controller stick is very loose in comparison, almost to the point of twitchiness but is much easier on the hands. But 61 games, many of which are very hard to come by and often are great fun? I loved Arctic Adventure; I first played that game as part of the Konami MSX Antiques Collection that appeared for the Japanese Sega Saturn (fun fact; the penguin swears in that one, when he messes up and loses). I was very glad to find this as the DG-exclusive title. Sure it doesn't have a lot of the older licensed games, but it does have a lot of old favorites, some licensed from Sega, Konami, Exidy and Taito. That's something you won't often find elsewhere. In conclusion, I don't regret my purchase one bit!
This is a great review with a lot of detail. I like the fact that you took the time to take a short clip of all 61 games. I bought the Intellivision Flashback and really like that, so I'm thinking of buying one of these as well.
I was shocked to find out that there was a Celecovision flashback console in the first place. Sure it's far from being perfect (a lot of corners were cut to keep the cost down) and it is kind of nice that this sort of thing managed to see the light of day.
Hi no swear gamer,Thanks for the review of the Colecovision Flasback.I originally had Colecovision back in 1980's.Most of the games that are included here I never had and I have never even heard of them.I had Turbo,Pit Stop,Miner forty-niner,Baseball,Football,Smurf,Mr. Do, Mouse Trap,Rocky,Popeye,Pepper 2,Donkey Kong,Donkey kong jr,Omega Race,Slither,Sub Hunt,BlackJack,Tarzan, super pitfall, space fury, lady bug.,I might have had a few more.I also had the roller controller,Atari adapter box and I think they were called super action controllers.
No Swear Gamer, there's an online bulletin out now about a new game system called "Super Game Cartridge" being manufactured and to be released this year by Opcode Games. They say there will be Colecovision game inclusions in this new system.
My neighbors bought me one a couple years ago for Christmas. I think my favorite is Space Panic. I played the arcade version a lot back in the early 1980's then had the Colecovision. My neighbors are great people, but I don't lived by them anymore.
I'm glad to see that it has games like Venture, Miner 2049er, Jungle Hunt, The Heist, & Zaxxon. Of the 61 games those were my favorites. Luckily I still have those games. Let's go back in time.... I bought the Atari 2600 when it came out. Later on when the Colecovision came out I sold my Atari 2600 to a friend, and my Mom helped with the rest of the money to purchase the Colecovision. I still have the Colecovision with all the Cartridges that I bought plus the Atari Expansion Module with the Atari Cartridges that I kept. I also have the Super Controllers that came with ROCKY. Oh, I also still have the Steering Wheel, and Gas pedal that came with TURBO. That's one thing that is different between me, and my older brother. He sold, or traded everything that our Mom ever bought him while I kept almost everything that she bought me. I still have the Commodore 64 with the Floppy Disc Drive. I can't remember if I still have the Cassette Tape Drive that we first got for it, or not? LOL I even have all the Rubix Cubes from the 80s. 😉 Thanks for making, and sharing this video. Now I want to bring out my Colecovision to play. Yes, It still works. 😜 👍🏼👍🏽👍🏾👍🏿🇺🇲🇮🇱🇺🇲🤘🏿🤘🏾🤘🏽🤘🏼
I recall actually seeing this eventually on the shelf but didn't pick it up, I did however pick up the Pac-Man plug 'n play they had at one point that went for $20!
Good review. I grew up with the Atari 2600 and never really played the Colecovision. Think I would definitely get this over the Atari flashback console.
just a note for everyone that's asking about where from and how much...I just got mine yesterday at toysrus for about $19 plus tax !!! ...I was never into calecovision...but I'm a gamer and can't resist a bargain !!!
Sweet review Phil! I own a ColecoVision Flashback myself though not the Dollar General version. As a matter of fact it was my introduction to ColecoVision gaming. I currently use it to do my channel's ColecoVision review videos until my Collectorvision Phoenix arrives.
My uncle had a ColecoVision and we played it all the time. Something like this would be appealing, but without the licensed games it would be a brick. Ie; MouseTrap, Ladybug, Q-Bert, Gorf, Mr. Do, etc..
@@popeyejones9256 WTF!? It was the Playstation one, but literally ten minutes ago I was randomly thinking about the Dukes of Hazzard game on PS1 and how it was just forgotten. GET OUT OF MY HEAD!
It's a shame they didn't include Burgertime. Burger Time is one of the best games on the system. I've heard the emulation isn't that good (I have a real Colecovision). It's very surprising how bad the emulation is on these things. ALL of these old game systems have very refined emulators available and don't require a lot of computing horsepower. Not only that, but the Colecovision is almost identical to the MSX computer and the SG-1000 game console and is one of the best documented of these old systems, so that even if they couldn't use an available emulator, writing one from scratch would be fairly easy because the system is just so well documented and understood.
I really love this thing even if the emulation isn't spot on. Honestly I don't mind the missing licensed games. I don't need another version of Donkey Kong and I'm not a big fan of the Smurf's game. I would have liked the see Lady Bug and Spy Hunter though. Maybe if they come out with a second one.
Actually..... I'm pretty sure the load time is there because the Z80 had to write the graphics data to the graphics ram via an output port. The VDG was an I/O device and not memory mapped like other game consoles of the time. I believe you need to write two values to put one value out to the VDG. One for the location and another the actual data. This delay is present on all such systems using the TMS 99xx VDG, such as the TI-99/4A, MSX and other similar based systems.
Smurf, Popeye, and HERO would have been awesome to have. But we got Bump and Jump. The version of "Heist" plays way slower on this system than it did on colecovision. Great Review!
I own this. It's good, but the controls are very stiff. I remember the CV's controls being much better, but that was 30 years ago so my memory is hazy.
CORRECTION: "Destructor" was not a homebrew title. I remember my neighbor's kid bought it way back in the 1980s and it was designed to be used with the ColecoVision steering wheel. Also... one of the most wonderful things about that game was when you paused the game, it would play this very, very calming little tune. I loved it!
I think it is a fine unit for the price considering what you get included, yeah everyone wants their favorite game included, a cartridge slot, HDMI out etc, lol, I didn't have unrealistic expectation BUT I did think it could have looked better, the Intellivision flashback looks much closer to the original console, also the emulation when compared to the real system leaves something to be desired, some sound glitches or complete omissions where sampled speech is completely screwed up and don't even compare Microvsions THE HEIST to the original or you will cry as it runs at about 1/2 speed killing the pace and music. Because they rushed it they also screwed compatibility with original controllers. Again, for what is on offer I think it is a fair price for those whom are not too fussy but they really should have gotten the emulation more accurate at the least.
Yeah the emulation is not that great, will still take my original ColecoVision with Atarimax cart anytime over this, really no excuse just a poor attempt but that is what you get with Atgames always cutting corners and accepting barely good enough to keep the price down. It really is NOT for those wanting a true reproduction of their childhood experience sadly. :p
I have the original Colecovision with a ton of games but some of the games I don't have are on the flashback. On eBay the original games go for $40+ so it sounds like a very good deal.
I never grew up with this console, but it seems like a step up from the Atari 2600. I personally don't find any of these games appealing, I rather play the original Nintendo or the Sega Master System.
Between this and Intellivsion Flashback, this is easily the better Flashback. Even though, it's understandable to be disappointed in the Donkey Kong games not being included (Donkey Kong being the system-seller), I feel they weren't really the best games on the console as the console had better conversions than those. My favorite games are Montezuma's Revenge, Jumpman Junior, Miner 2049er, Pepper II, and Frenzy; with the exception of the educational games, the selection s beefier and more to offer compared to the Intellivision Flashback. That said, I'm not to crazy with the homebrew games, especially being a huge fan of the scene; Mecha 8's hitbox to too big for its own good and Princess Quest, while ambitious and has cool ideas, just doesn't feel anywhere near as polished as Ghosts & Goblins.
+The No Swear Gamer I found something interesting about Colecovision updates posted in 2016. Take a look at this site page: www.colecovision.dk/cv-news.htm
War Room was the best game on the system, and a system exclusive. Gateway to Apshai and the Imagic games were the other best games. And they'll all on the unit.
Has anyone else had the experience that I had, where the first controller port stopped responding left? This was after approximately one year with no damage or aggressive misuse of the game system itself. Thinking that it may have been an issue with the controller, I tried the (unused) 2nd controller in the first port and it was the same problem of not responding with a left direction, unfortunately. The second port responded correctly with both controllers, but the problem is that this excludes any one player only games from being operable. Overall, I really enjoy(ed) this system actually, since there are various games that I used to play on the Atari 800 xl, such as Gateway to Apshai, Montezuma's Revenge, Jumpman, Jr., Jungle Hunt, and Zaxxon, among others. Anyway, if there's any advice as to what might need adjustment or replacement in the motherboard (as I suspect), I'd appreciate it!
but as for a real comment, wouldn't Nintendo make a fortune if they release there own flashback system. like a original nes with 50 pack INS. they could charge up to 100 and people will scoop it up. I should work for Nintendo could make them a bunch of money. Lets face it Nintendo has past its hey day. So why not bring it back, other than the eshop
Wow. These were colecovision games? Aside from homebrews, the big ones not shown, and a few of the well known ones (like space fury) im disappointed. Even 2600 shooters looked more fun. Although,,im intrigued about the rpg ones. I had an intellivision, loved the d&d ones on that system.
Technically this version of Destructor is a homebrew game by Team Pixelboy. It is the same as the original release except this one doesn't require Expansion Model #2 the Steering Wheel Controller is the only difference.
@@ChristopherSobieniak well as I said above it is technically the same game in all regards except for being able to use the original ColecoVision controllers. On their website Team Pixelboy explains that the Steering Wheel Controller being required for the original release was a sore point for many gamers. That's why they thought to do it.
I love the original CV. I used to play it til all hours of the day. Always hated the joysticks though. The new CV FS joysticks are even less friendly. And some of the games are not as fun as the original versions. Also, why no Looping? No Donkey Kong? No DK Junior! Hopefully in the second version... Also, check out these replacement controllers for the Flashback on Ebay. Pretty cool... www.ebay.com/itm/111708786146?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
RV S Licensing. In the case of DK and DK JR, Nintendo would have to be paid and ok it, which is not impossible, but Nintendo rarely lets games appear on other systems anymore.
Is my system broken or is it almost impossible to shoot diagonally in games like frenzy and venture? Does anyone else have a problem with the controls?
I kinda disagree with you. I never had an actual experience with anything Coleco, let alone the Colecovision, and I played none of the flashbacks (I'm the kind of guy who prefers the original format), so my opinion isn't fair, but I watched another review of this criticize this for the fact that the sound is a bit off and the controllers aren't very good (even worse than the original's controllers, in fact) because it didn't feel very sturdy and the joystick wasn't as good, and some of the games aren't as playable because of said controllers. While you're right that it has some games that are rare, but I'm confused to why the first game is an edutainment game (though I bet it's because the wanted it to be in Alphabetic order). Also, while I'm disappointed that Donkey Kong, which the system is most known for, isn't on here, I understand that it was due to licensing reasons. It still wouldn't for hurt for AtGames (who were the actual manufactures of this, not Coleco themselves) to at least try to get the license. Again, I didn't get a taste of that CV experience yet, but I ordered an actual CV (with 16 games), so I would say that if you haven't played it, then go buy the console, like me.
That's ok! I don't expect everyone to share the same opinion, but I enjoyed the system. Yes I prefer to play original systems when possible, but for the number of games and the price, I thought it was a good deal. And it's hard to say since we aren't in the company, but it's possible AtGames approached Nintendo, but Nintendo said no. Actually, since they have worked with Atari, Sega, Intellivision and a bunch of third parties, I wouldn't be surprised if they approached Nintendo about an NES flashback, but got turned down.
I wonder if there is a way to "reprogram" this to delete some of the lamer games and replace them with better ones (like SMURFS, TARZAN, MR DO, WARGAMES, LADYBUG, MOUSETRAP.. hell, what was the one with the roller controller that was CENTIPEDE in the midwest?)
I had a Colecovision, it was my first console. I had about 30 awesome games. NONE of them are here. This is complete junk. There are like 3 real Coleco classics on here... I am not trolling, but the games suck.
Most of the games on this system are stupid. This is not what the Colecovision is famous for. I get copyright issues, but i don't get the choices. Cosmic Avenger is by Universal, but where's Mr. Do and Lady Bug. There are a few Exidy games on there, most games are imagic or other companies which can be played on other systems. Why bother with this just use an emulator. This was another missed opportunity by these crappy companies that bring out these consoles. $40 Dollars US. In Australia they are trying to sell these things online for $150+. WHAT!!
Destructor is not a homebrew. It was one of the steering wheel games back when it came out.

Good points!
Will we ever have a Colecovision Flashback 2?
+Ryan Lepore Sadly, most likely no. This and the Intellivision FB did not sell well enough to warrant sequels.
+The No Swear Gamer I found something interesting about Colecovision updates posted in 2016. Take a look at this site page: www.colecovision.dk/cv-news.htm
There is some discussion on AtariAge. Apparently there is a possibility of both an Intellivision and a Colecovision Flashback 2... in 2019.
@@thenosweargamer1449 because the games they give you suck.i had no idea colecovision fb was this bad.
Great review. Thank you for showing each game.
Ordered it for CHRISTmas. Looks pretty good! (I was mainly ordering it for the controller; I always wondered what it would feel like.)
Jehovah has the glory. The obstacle has the dirt.
War Room was the best game on the system, and a system exclusive. Gateway to Apshai and the Imagic games were the other best games. And they'll all on the unit.
first time ive seen Coleco gameplay shocked at how much better the games look when compared to atari2600 and intellivison!
chrisbomber101 you are comparing 1979 with 1982 hardware...
Nice review. Sadly Zaxon in the only game that interested me. I didn’t have a coleco vision either, but I had classmates that did. 🎮
Thanks. Yeah, this most likely isn't worth it for one game only.
Looks ok. Sad to see no Lady Bug, Mouse Trap or Carnival.
Should of had Included Baseball , Football & a Few Other Sports Games , That Would Be Nice !!! ;D Thank$ 4 da Review & Reviews , Nice ! ;>
You're welcome! And I agree: Some more sport games would've been nice.
Am surprised an Atari XE games system flashback hasn't been released yet.
Dang, no Alcazar The Forgotten Fortress? That is easily the best Coleco game.
So lets see theres black jack, Cosmic Avenger, Venture, Zaxxon, & Jungle Hunt
Excellent review!
Thank You!
is it possible to release a console with all arcade games in near future?
It originally costed $40 BUT now it has been ranked up in price extreamly,on ebay ,ouch
wish I could find this in my local dollar general all they have is the Atari flashback 6 sadly enough
Yeah, nowadays either Amazon or eBay are your best bet.
but as for a real comment, wouldn't Nintendo make a fortune if they release there own flashback system. like a original nes with 50 pack INS. they could charge up to 100 and people will scoop it up. I should work for Nintendo could make them a bunch of money. Lets face it Nintendo has past its hey day. So why not bring it back, other than the eshop
+itchy the 80s man I think they would, but sadly I think they plan to stick with the e-shop model only.
itchy the 80s man it happened. They also realeasd a snes mini, and there’s rumors they are making n64 mini or gameboy mini
Wow. These were colecovision games? Aside from homebrews, the big ones not shown, and a few of the well known ones (like space fury) im disappointed. Even 2600 shooters looked more fun. Although,,im intrigued about the rpg ones. I had an intellivision, loved the d&d ones on that system.
If the Colecovision Flashback has Bump 'n Jump, then why didn't the Intellivision version have it or BurgerTime?
"Destructor" is not a homebrew. I had that game when I was 7. I recall it used the steering wheel module.
Christopher Sobieniak Thanks for letting me know!
The No Swear Gamer I can see why you might've been confused there.
www.colecovisionzone.com/page/game/coleco/destructor.html
Technically this version of Destructor is a homebrew game by Team Pixelboy. It is the same as the original release except this one doesn't require Expansion Model #2 the Steering Wheel Controller is the only difference.
@@bmkretrogaming7634 OK, I can understand why they did that. Just that on the surface it feels like the same game to me.
@@ChristopherSobieniak well as I said above it is technically the same game in all regards except for being able to use the original ColecoVision controllers. On their website Team Pixelboy explains that the Steering Wheel Controller being required for the original release was a sore point for many gamers. That's why they thought to do it.
Very well done
+brickell123 Thank You!
These are now going anywhere from 80-140.00 used condition.
It seems that this console is shell for the Atgames. Is that? Well, for me this console is pretty good. Congratulations for the vídeo.
Holy Crap, 40 bucks is insanely expensive.
As an owner of the original console,(bought in 83), let me assure you that the original controllers sucked too.

RV S Licensing. In the case of DK and DK JR, Nintendo would have to be paid and ok it, which is not impossible, but Nintendo rarely lets games appear on other systems anymore.
If only it had a Coleco Cart slot....
+Kabuki Jo A lot of these system would be great if they had a cartridge slot, but from my understanding, the cost keeps it from happening.
Not sure cost is the reason, as it would not cost that much to add a connector. And remember, this is junk made with Chinese slave labor.
Yes Non Swearing , I like these game but no Mr. Do, or Donkey Kong. Or Donkey Kong JR. Oh well.
"No swear gamer." It's far too late for me to earn that title. Faaaarrrr too late...
Is my system broken or is it almost impossible to shoot diagonally in games like frenzy and venture? Does anyone else have a problem with the controls?
No Time Pilot, Mr. Do, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. or Burger Time.
Hard Pass. 😒
Being able to use the ORIGINAL cartridge would be nice. Therefore no licensing needed. That just is a weird viewpoint.
Does Atari 2600 play colecovision games?!
No. However, there is an adapter that lets you play 2600 games on the Colecovision and Coleco also made their own Atari 2600 system called the Gemini.
The No Swear Gamer mod Atari Colecovision and Intellivision!!!
Can you load your own roms?
So funny the heist is my favorite coleco game and for some reason on this flashback it runs at half speed , super annoying
Is this a video game console or a phone?
It would be better if you can plug original or different controllers for this, it has the ports for gods sake
No Mr. Do, Lady Bug, Buck Rogers, Donkey Kong,?....too bad
Does it have D&D?
Slither.
It was awesome !
there is a ColecoVision Flashback????
I had a Colecovision, it was my first console. I had about 30 awesome games. NONE of them are here. This is complete junk. There are like 3 real Coleco classics on here... I am not trolling, but the games suck.
Edit: The little man.
I had the from Dollar General and ran really sluggest.
WHAT!!
Bill Gates has lived a strange life...
Too bad Gorf isn't on there
Cry’s in 100 dollars now ):
Fucking missing to many game. Fuck it
This thing is AWESOME!!! }:-D>
No swear gamer as opposed to oh idk......the angry video game nerd? Lmao. Can I say that here?
No burger time? 😒
Sadly, no, most likely due to licensing issues.
Your "transformer" in mecha 8 looks 3d
