    3. Preserve the history of Atari in the video game hobby so that it survives long after us

      Also Hugo seems to be listing the NES style 7800 gamepad already for around 35 bucks! That's a great deal if it's similar or even improved from what he sent me!

    The best option for me is the mega 7800 adapter. What it has over the seagull 78 is two button sega master system compatibility.
    The sega master system controller. Pinout is very simple. If you are a do it yourselfer, you could make your own controller following the master system pin out, and then simply pair it with the mega 7800 adapter. This differs from the 7800 pin out, which is more complicated.

    Also, sorry I didn't mention cord length again but here's why:
    For Atari 2600+ and even 7800 I always sit close to the console. Because unlike other ones, you often have to flip the reset switch or select. Therefore its not something I think of. But if I get enough comments asking for controller length comparison I'll rectify it!

    Just wanted to chime in that my main 7800/2600 controllers I use are my Retrogameboyz NES style controller and my Bratwurst joystick controller. I swap between them depending on the game being played. I did want to mention that I too a few months back starting having issues with my RGBs NES style controller not wanting to register the main fire button all the time. I cracked the controller open and found that his earlier controllers use some pretty weak wire cable in them and the wiring had broken loose on the solder joint for that button. I went ahead and redid all of the wire connections and it has been working great. I've spoke to Mike about this at RGBs and he states it was an issue with earlier controllers but he uses better wire now. So, Jon that might be something to look at just in case your controller has a similar cause.

    5:12 I’m 26. Ever since I first saw this game pad around age 11, I was foaming at the mouth, with bulging read eyes, rocking back and forth in the corner of a room in my grandmas house. I had no money or way of finding a store that would have it. All while everyone’s playing Xbox 360 ps3 I’m obsessively stalking the desire to have this controller to play any game like galaga, even missile command which I loved. And there was a game I was obsessed with a 2d overhead game where you have a sword and there are green blobs you and stuff. I know it’s an nes style now but I didn’t know at the time!!!

    Weird fact - the 7800 Gamepad was the controller that came with the PAL Atari 2600 Jnr system in Australia. I used the game pad as a kid when playing my 2600 - and I never knew that it was a 7800 controller. I didn’t even know that the Atari 7800 even existed back then. And I always wondered why this controller had 2 buttons when they both did the same thing for 2600 games

    Great controller guide, Jon! 🕹️
    First, I’ll state my personal preference-arcade joystick. No dpad or flightstick for me. I grew up playing coin-op games in the arcades, CX40 with the 2600, and the Wico Redball and Bat with Atari computers.
    Before I got the 7800, I tried the Proline controller at PRGE, and I knew right away that it wasn’t for me. I got started on the 7800 with the arcade controller by Retrogameboyz. I loved it so much that I got two more-one for 2P and another with a 4-way joystick. I also have RGB’s Robotron dual stick gamepad. Last year, I graduated from RGB’s controllers to an Edladdin All-Play 4/8 (can switch between 4 way and 8 way by simply turning a plate). I hope to order the twin stick from Edladdin soon. The genuine arcade controller parts used in Edladdin controllers feel better to me than RGB’s controllers that use cheaper parts to keep the price down. RGB’s controller are great, and Edladdin controllers feel even better-you get what you pay for.
    As far as paddles go, V61’s CX30 Evolved paddle is the best paddle that I’ve experienced. There’s a slight weighty feel when you rotate the paddle which I can only describe as buttery smooth. If paddles are important to your gaming, do yourself a favor and get them.

    • @TheAtariNetwork
      @TheAtariNetwork  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've been wanting to try video61s evolved paddles for a long time. As a 7800 fan I love the idea of having 7800 stylized paddles.
      RGB has been making good stuff for years and I learned that they have improved their quality even more recently. I dream of the day I get an Ed Laddin joystick. It's just too expensive for me but maybe one day I'll make some money off this TH-cam thing and get one lol
      Also I forgot all about retrogameboyz arcade sticks. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with them. And there's so many options out there it's just impossible to name them all. Regardless thanks for your input!

      @@socrates0603 I'm probably split between the two too. I like the twin stick because I love Robotron and it could be used for Petscii Robots and time Salvo. Along with all the other games while ignoring the other stick. Honestly typing this I think I'd go with that one lol

    Awesome video! So glad you mentioned the pro line coupler as it actually makes those controllers useful and I find them to be very responsive. I want to buy an Aladdin twin someday but for now the pro lines do the job. Has anyone done a pause button mod for a controller and system? I know that’s been done on the sega master system.

    • @TheAtariNetwork
      @TheAtariNetwork  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I remember reading something about a pause button before but I haven't seen it implemented on anything. I'll have to look into it again and find out!
      The couplers are great and really affordable. If you already have the Pro lines and like Robotron 2084 it's a no brainier!

    I've never been a fan of Ataris controllers after the VCS. Side firing buttons and button mashing games=pain. One of their many mistakes with this console was not releasing it here with the overseas pad.
    I do appreciate that Retro gamer boys puts out controllers for obscure systems, but i haven't been impressed with what I've gotten from them. They're pricey and feel like $5, 3rdv party NES controllers, which I'm guessing is what they're based on.
    For the money though, the seagull 78 and your choice of sega controller is really tough to beat.

    Mega78 also adds the ability to use the Sega Phaser for light gun games which is a plus! I found Meltdown on 7800 actually fantastic using the Sega Phaser where it feels nearly unplayable with the Atari XE Lightgun.
    Both Edladdin 78 and Mega78 adapters work on the 2600+ in my experience too. As Sega controllers won't even work on single button games on the 2600+ without those adapters.

    The Hyperkin Trooper is a controller I wholeheartedly recommend to left handed players. I use my left hand to hold the stick and my right hand to fire. I cannot use the stick CX40. To me that is managed, ergonomically flawed design. The trooper is superior in every way. Plus it isn’t nearly as stiff.

    This is a fantastic rundown of 7800 controllers; some I am proud to own and some I never heard off. I did get a Euro pad from Best Electronics for the authentic factor. I added a RetroGameBoys NES style which is a familiar and easy controller for me. I did blow all my birthday money last year for the Edladdin 78 Arcade style controller. I grew up in the arcade and I was willing to spend a lot to get the feel of the arcade. Ed the creator of these high end controllers serial numbers them and I even had him autograph mine. I do NOT plan on getting an arcade 1UP machine, so this brings back the arcade magic for me. Once again: thanks Jon for giving this info in such an entertaining and concise way!!

    I tend to use the CX-78 Europad or CX-40s. The new Atari pads will be a recreation of the CX-78. They are supposed to be available in March and PLAION has already teased an image. The Retrogameboyz dual pad Is great for Robotron. I haven't had any issues personally.

      @TheAtariNetwork personally, I hope that the buttons are less mushy. But PLAION seems to want to replicate feel - at least they did for the CX-40+. However, with the CX-78, there is a lot less nostalgia (at least in the States). Maybe that opens up the door for some improvements.

    European here. My two cents of knowledge regarding 7800 pad. They are CRAP. I was really lucky to get one for my Atari St for a steal and they are really uncomfortable. The directional pad is horribly imprecise. Try playing a vertical shoot 'em up with that and you'll see. The buttons are somewhat ok but a farcry from for example the standard NES pad. Also, they are way too far away from each other and a bit "sunken" so good luck pushing both at the same time (not than any ST game needs that to my knowledge, but there's that). Also, it is extremely easy to push more than one direction involuntarily, somewhat similar to what happens with a Master System pad but worse IMO. If yoy feel comfortable with them maybe you'll like the euro pad but my advice is: Don't waste your money on that. As the video says, there are better options.

      I wouldn't disagree with much of what your saying but I feel the dpad is much better without the thumbstick. The buttons are definitely too far apart.
