My wife had an Intellivision when she was a kid and when I first met her and her brother, they pulled it out and were showing it to me. I'd never played an Intellivision before so I tried Astrosmash. I started playing and just could not die. I don't remember what my score was but they both sat there with this shocked look on their faces. Apparently neither of them had ever gotten as far as I did. Wow...so many awesome games that I played on both the original Intellivision and the Intellivision II. The biplanes game was awesome in 'Triple Action'. I picked up one of these last year and had a lot of fun with it. Some instructions would have been nice, especially for games like B-17 but for the price ($17.99 at Veterans Canteen Services) it was worthwhile. Thanks for the review and keep those classic video games coming!
I enjoyed your review, and I think your comments on the Intelly Flashback mirror my own. I am very happy with mine. I think they did a great job with it, I just wish they could have included more games.
I had the actually Intellivision that I played with my son. We would play Shark Shark! over and over taking turns on it. Astrosmash and so many others. Cool retro system. I just might pick one up.
In Astrosmash, you could only get to 999,999. Then the game would stop adding to your score. About 20 levels after that, those dropping smart bombs were too fast to defeat. It was my favorite game. I got to 999,999 too many times to count. I even sent a photo of my last level screen at 999,999 to Intellivision, but never heard back.
I don't know. It was a long time ago. The pattern I'm talking about is when and where the smart bomb would start falling. If I remember correctly, and I probably don't, it would start on one side, then the other then in the middle or something like that. At the higher levels, it's so fast that it will kill you quickly. You just had to know where it was coming from and enough lives to score a few more points before you ran out of lives.
Sea Battle was my game, too bad only two player. Brother only let me play if I promised not to shoot, or go "around the island." Was a pretty lethal kid with a PT boat.
The Intellivision was an interesting piece of the second generation puzzle. While I'm more of an Atari and ColecoVision guy due to the arcade games it's still worth taking a look at. Since my Dollar General was practically giving it away at 70% off, how could I say no? There's some more arcadey games for the console that would have been nice to have but a lot of those were licensed titles they probably couldn't get a hold of.
Back in the 80s, my grandfather got an Atari 2600, even though he was a bit of a technophobe. Also being interested in Naval type stuff, he would spot the game Sub Hunt, since Intellivision games were normally located right next to the Atari ones, and ask if he could play that on the Atari. Each time I'd tell him no. After the video game crash, they got me an Intellivision for Christmas and I bought a bunch of games for cheap prices, including Sub Hunt. Since they lived right downstairs, I hooked the Intellivision up next to the Atari so that they could play it too. After getting Sub Hunt, I showed it to my grandfather and offered to teach him how to play it. He wouldn't even try because the controllers were too complicated! At least my grandmother liked to play Burgertime. The disc was awkward, but I used to stick a suction cup on it and use that as a stubby joystick. It worked pretty well, although it would eventually come loose and I'd have to re-stick it. I know they made some commercial alternatives, like stick on joysticks, replacement discs with joysticks on them, clamp on joysticks, etc, but I never had any of them. I wanted the Wico Intellivision joystick, but it was too expensive.
I was an Atari kid back in those days but I played my share of Intellivision then too as friends had it. The colors in a lot of the games seem off. I loved the baseball game.
My brother and I enjoyed Frog Bog a lot. There were keypad buttons that changed the control style; the default is what you showed where the frog jumps back and forth predictably and eats bugs automatically, but the keypad buttons would change it to where you had more control over the jumps and could even splash in the water, and could catch bugs manually. :) Harder, but more rewarding and you could get more points!
Sweet review Phil! It's not the Dollar General version, but I do own an IntelliVision Flashback myself. It was my introduction to IntelliVision gaming as a matter of fact. I even use it where I can in my channel's review videos to reduce overusing my Mattel IntelliVision 2.
I have a very similar Intellivision flashback, wifey ordered mine online a few years ago. Heaps of fun, but as you said, there's a learning curve. Loved the video!
I recovered some memory of games I already forgot. Thank you a lot! I was like 5 years old we got Intellivision from FRG and smuggled it through the iron curtain. Maybe we had one of the really-really few in Hungary. I remember now games I had no clue how to play, like the Tower of Doom and the roulette game.
Since I have a gen 1 Intellivision with around 40 games, I'd only pick this up if I could find a really good deal on it. But some of the games on it are really rare. Stadium Mud Buggies for instance, was one of two final games to be released for the system, in 1989! Typically the carts by themselves will likely cost you upwards to $130, but if you find a sealed one it'll probably set you back over $700. Thunder Castle, while not as rare usually sells for $30 for the cart alone. I think Tower of Doom is another rare one, but since the game is apparently unplayable, maybe it'll play better on the Intellivision Lives! compilation for PS2. But for those without access to an actual Intellivision and wants to try those wacky controllers, this would be a great way to dip your toe in the water.
Bought one of these the year it came out and LOVED IT! Just like my childhood playing against my little brother. Within 2 months of light wear a controller failed. AND just before the warrantee expired the whole thing just stopped working. I've also had 2 Atari Flashbacks. One died within a year(although the controllers were great and still work!) and the other I gave to my daughter. It also failed after a few months with her roommates. Would love another one of these, but they aren't cheap on e-bay and my luck has not been very good.
The fact that there is a few of unreleased games in the system is good enough for buying this system. I owned an Intellivision when I was young and could not get my hand on all the games. So, this is a good thing.
Why doesn't the game selection menu just simply use the disk to select a game on the page, any of the side buttons to start a game, and use the numeric keypad to select a page? If only there was a reproduction Intellivision. In other words a modern Intellivision that has all of the functionality of the original Intellivision with the Intellivoice built in, a few built in games, and the cables (as well as the option for an HDMI cable) to hook up to a more modern television set.
Great video! I have an Atari 2600 Flashback 2... I have a lot of fun with some of these generation games, even though i'm a bit younger. This looks pretty good as well. :D
Astrosmash, Space Armada, Pinball, Bowling and Chip Shot Golf are some of my favorites. Too bad it didn't include some Activision titles like Pitfall and River Raid.
Nice review. What I don't get is why they included games like the original Baseball and the Super Pro Baseball when you can only play 2p on the original. I had 2 sisters growing up and they would never play those games with me. My mom tried playing with me but it was not very much fun. What would be really cool is if they made this expandable where you can download add-on games. It looks like they did include some of the really cool Intellivision titles, but would love to see skiing, tron deadly discs, the Imagic games, the list goes on and on.
I had the blue intellibivison plug n play as a kid and i swear it had a lot of thaw games that weren't on yours, but I did own a lot of plug n play over the years,I remember one that was Nintendo 64 controller with a nes controller and zapper attached that had like hundred of games on, NES and ones I've still never seen before, maybe they were on that. The racer and poker I know I've played before I got into PC emulation
Burger time is stuck on the Legends system. Sega must be holding onto special rights or something. Atari Flashback x also has burger time, but the graphics are not all that great.
Is the colecovision, and the intellivision the same system but made by different manufacturers?I know there was different versions of the 3do,so I never knew if it was kinda the same deal.i never noticed much of a difference between the games on the systems.
Between the Intellivision and Colecovision Flashbacks, I prefer the Colecovision Flashback as it has more simplistic, arcade-like games; Intellivision as a whole was a console meant to offer more, strategic, complex and realistic games, as such, the library aged worse compared to the other consoles of this era. Still, this plug-and-play offers enough good games as long as you can get it at a cheap price; my favorites are Shark! Shark! and Thunder Castle, but there are a few other games worth playing such as Buzz Bombers.
John Walters I never said Intellivision had better graphics; I meant the library focused on realistic sports games and games more complex than the competition from a gameplay standpoint.
The only brick and mortar retailer I can find who sells it is Toys R Us. Might be paying them a visit tomorrow. Oh wait - check that. It's online only. Bed Bath and Beyond sells it but they don't have it in stock
+tarstarkusz Yep. I can understand Burgertime since this was a Data East game and some of the other licensed games but I don't understand why they wouldn't go ahead and include the roms for all the other games that weren't licensed.
+vista7 They should have just paid the damn license fee. Burger Time hasn't been used since the Flintstones BT clone on the GBC. How much could it have cost them? Leaving out some of the best games on the system is a rotten way to cut corners.
I don't know why Intellivision emulation has always been so jacked up. I have emulators and roms for most every system but it's always been hard to locate roms for the Intellivision. I don't know what company released this but it's all about profits and apparently this unit didn't sell very well because I looked around at every retailer and couldn't find any units.
It's bad to see math games included and frog eating flies games haven't aged well. Yeah 3rd party games we don't get for legal reasons yet they will never see the light of day ever again. At least this has RPG games on it. That was one of the things that made Intellevision different in it's day. RPGs were on computers but scarce on consoles.
Several years ago like back in 1980' s I use to own this game syste. And the game system called I magic game system. Now in today's time we have more updated game system and old school games system.
If only Intellivision had licensed Space Invaders (a "killer app") then its system would have sold more in 1980. It would have gained or led market share, and more games would have been made for it, including 3rd party developers who left Atari. Instead they sometimes did conversions of their games for Intellivision, without putting in the hours to do an upgrade and use its features.
intellivision was one of my first consoles. I had the boxing game for it and the autoracing game(had some more games but i do not remember much)... i was 5-6 years old or something. i thought the name of the boxing game was choose men. loved it till i got my c64.
I'd buy an MECC pnp TV game if they put Oregon Trail, the Muncher games, and a few others on there. A plug n play with a classic 3D dungeon crawl? I gotta pick one of these up. There's a Mario edutainment suite for PC that lets you play Go Fish.
Bowling.....left handed.....16 pounds.....0 slickness....move the man to the top of the approach.....quickly tap the aim button and let it go.....keep pressing the disc down until the ball is released...
None of the "Super Pro" games predates the Famicom. Buzz Bombers is a 1 or 2 player game. Sharp Shot is great for very young children, and that's all. The only control you have is a fire button. Space Battle is not terribly difficult. But you need to play on the lower difficulty settings to get used to it.
WOW !! Even though all my faves aren't there.. it's a great deal. I want to find one.. maybe convenience store ?.. i already saw there the mini Nintendo and the mini Snes.

+uriituw Because I made the show family friendly, so it's safe to watch with the kiddos around or for viewers who are hearing profanities after every other word in reviews.
Mattel sold the Intellivison brand to INTV Corp in 1984, so Mattel and Intellivision no longer have any connection and if the Flashback was going to have He-Man on it, they would have to pay Mattel a licensing fee.
Yeah, it was nice comparing a few of these games to M-Network games I had for Atari: Baseball, Frogs & Flies and Armor Ambush. Two of those needed 1-player versions.

Is the colecovision, and the intellivision the same system but made by different manufacturers?I know there was different versions of the 3do,so I never knew if it was kinda the same deal.i never noticed much of a difference between the games on the systems.
I guess it didn't come with the controller cards or you would have mentioned them?
Wow looking back at these games, makes me feel bad for 80's gamers....lol
If Armor Battle is two player how do you play it with only one controller?
I need another controller one of mine not working properly where can I get one?
Oh wow, start strike actually looks playable unlike the blue plug n play I had as a kid. Maybe I should try emulating it and seeing how far I can get
all mine is showing on my screen is rainbow things?
nothing is better than the original, but there is a big time learning curve, I remember all the buttons for the sports games without the over lays.
I have an og...with the intellivoice module
I wish I had room for my old consoles.
Good video. Bummer about tower of doom. that was one of my favorites. Still may get this system.
From what I heard there's gonna be a brand new Intellivision console coming out next year but I'm having a weird feeling that the rumor is false
Thank you for the information!
You're welcome!
OH MY GOD! I finally found a system that has Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Unbelievable.
PinMike8666 Colecovision as miles better graphics I say.
John Walters I never said Intellivision had better graphics; I meant the library focused on realistic sports games and games more complex than the competition from a gameplay standpoint.
I am the one who said Colecovision as better graphics
John Walters CD
An HD version of this mini was all I wanted from this brand. Thanks, Tommy and pals, for ruining Intellivision.
Well I have some good news for you. Atari just bought Intellivision and plan to make these games available again in the modern era.
Tron Deadly disc and He-Man were my favorites. and Super pro Basketball
Wheres Lock&Chase?
I remember getting the game for the Xbox when I got it back from the UK where I live in the UK. It doesn’t work on my Europe Xbox
Is Dollar General still selling this? Amazon has it for 40 bucks and I heard some guys found it for 10 bucks at Sams.
+vista7 No, unless they have old stock. The great deals you hear about only come from clearance sales that some were lucky enough to find.
Darn. Amazon sells them but they are 40 bucks. Still going to get one but man the wife always snags those amazon packages!
I guess it was also a weak seller if they aren't stocking them. It's a shame.
The only brick and mortar retailer I can find who sells it is Toys R Us. Might be paying them a visit tomorrow. Oh wait - check that. It's online only. Bed Bath and Beyond sells it but they don't have it in stock
Lock N chase, Burgertime, Diner etc are all missing. Some of the best games on the system are missing. Shame.
tarstarkusz Yes, sadly due to licensing issues.
+tarstarkusz Pitfall, Tron Deadly Discs
I am very impressed with Intel flashback where can I buy one of my favourite games on it and a couple I haven't seen before
It's bad to see math games included and frog eating flies games haven't aged well. Yeah 3rd party games we don't get for legal reasons yet they will never see the light of day ever again.
At least this has RPG games on it. That was one of the things that made Intellevision different in it's day. RPGs were on computers but scarce on consoles.
Funny how you can see them on Atari Flashback machines.
Thank you for the crown of Kings game I did not know that and I was looking at used intellevisions to my dismay
Dude, how do you show the game without including a clip of the legendary "B-17 Bomberrrrrrrrrrrrrr" voice cut?!?!
I wish Dollar General still had this
I do too as they have become very expensive these days.
Instead they sometimes did conversions of their games for Intellivision, without putting in the hours to do an upgrade and use its features.
great vid :)
+Odd pod Thanks!
Is it a "counsel" or "console"
You talk about 2 player games but I only see one controller. Is there another controller, or how is the 2 player accomplished?
It comes with two. I only plugged in one for my review. You can see the second controller in my unboxing: th-cam.com/video/sN3fCvPrbug/w-d-xo.html
Yeesh, I wish I could get one of these in Australia. Or the Colecovision flashback for that matter...
I love all the games
intellivision was one of my first consoles. I had the boxing game for it and the autoracing game(had some more games but i do not remember much)... i was 5-6 years old or something. i thought the name of the boxing game was choose men. loved it till i got my c64.
"Choose Men" the game!?!?! Great story!
TRON ??
I'd buy an MECC pnp TV game if they put Oregon Trail, the Muncher games, and a few others on there.
A plug n play with a classic 3D dungeon crawl? I gotta pick one of these up.
There's a Mario edutainment suite for PC that lets you play Go Fish.
Bowling.....left handed.....16 pounds.....0 slickness....move the man to the top of the approach.....quickly tap the aim button and let it go.....keep pressing the disc down until the ball is released...
I wish these were still being made. People are charging silly amounts of money for them now.
Missing beam rider, burguer time
there needs to be updated versions of all of these games, with new next-gen graphics and gameplay. All these games could be updated.
I had the intellvoice and b17 bomber!
Nice review. I would have said 'Atari was kiddie and Intellivision was for more mature kids that were smarter'
Chad Faul ...really?
Colecovision was for Chads and geniuses. Truly the Rick and Morty fans of their time.
Can ya get a keyboard component? Lo effen L
Found this for 4 bucks today!
WOW !!
Even though all my faves aren't there.. it's a great deal.
I want to find one.. maybe convenience store ?.. i already saw there the mini Nintendo and the mini Snes.
I can't believe it doesn't have Atlantis or Lock 'N Chase
Lock. 'n Chase was due to licensing. A brand NEW Intellivision is coming in 10/10/2020 with ALL the old games included. th-cam.com/video/TzE386pQOy4/w-d-xo.html
Pitfall would have been the perfect adition.
Why "no swear?"
+uriituw Because I made the show family friendly, so it's safe to watch with the kiddos around or for viewers who are hearing profanities after every other word in reviews.
My girl bought this for me today thrifting..but had no over lays in it
No TRON games, no Bump n Jump, no Activision at all... not for me :(
Yeah. It’s just not Intellivision without Tron Deadly Disks.
@@beffiesv650 one of the best games on the system, a real joy for some reason.
I can't believe i thought these were good graphics back when I was young. lol.
They look better than Atari. I remember seeing some games in a store and wishing I had it instead.
This launched for $35 but now retails for $150 to $200 and up. Why?! This is INSANE!! Why has a $35 mass produced mainstream toy rocketed in price?
He Man and In television are both from Mattel can't see why not
Mattel sold the Intellivison brand to INTV Corp in 1984, so Mattel and Intellivision no longer have any connection and if the Flashback was going to have He-Man on it, they would have to pay Mattel a licensing fee.
Do the controls screw up you always had to replace the intellivision original version they also had a Sears Edition
frog bog= frogs and flies horse race =steeple chase
Yeah, it was nice comparing a few of these games to M-Network games I had for Atari: Baseball, Frogs & Flies and Armor Ambush. Two of those needed 1-player versions.
@@sandal_thong M -Network and intell had SAME slant cartrages , i think they used same mold
