Today's episode covers Dark Chambers for the Atari 2600. It is from 1988 and is based on the 1983 computer game Dandy by John Palevich, which was the direct inspiration for the classic arcade game Gauntlet. Developed by Sculptured Software, let’s play Dark Chambers and find out if it is any good or not.

I was 5, used to love this and play it every day after school. Basically I was playing Dark Souls, as I do now.

I really enjoyed this game back in the day. Especially the 2 player co-op. This was Diablo for the 2600.

I grabbed a boxed copy of this a few weeks ago even though I'd never heard of it, so I'm glad I found your review. I'm sure the 7800 version looks and plays better, but the 2600 version still looks great for a late release.

Quite an impressive game for the 2600 I must say... kind of like Secret Quest.

I had this game! My Atari 2600 had sat, collecting dust, for many years when in 1992 I found a bunch of 2600 games on sale for only a few dollars each at Big Lots. Figuring the games were only a few bucks each, I loaded up and broke out the then already outdated console.
A friend and I stayed up most of the night playing Dark Chambers. It was surprisingly challenging for a 2600 game. We never did beat it.

Well, that's interesting. Thanks for setting the story straight. I've heard, too that it is accused of being a rip off of Gauntlet (a game I love a lot). Glad to know that this game's basis actually precedes Gauntlet. I love learning new stuff! The smart bombs mechanic does sound problematic. I think I may need to find this game though, because it sounds like a cool idea to have a Dandy/Gauntlet style game on my 2600. That difficulty mode idea is pretty neat. More meaningful than just a number.

Just played this for the first time on the Evercade. Really enjoyed it, A-Z completed then it put me back on H. Would have been nice to have an ending but def worth playing. Smart bombs were a pain for me too. I was hammering fire button more often than not.

I wonder if it does the same on the highest difficulty. On the easy mode you start at A, on normal you start at D and hard you start at H. After playing A-Z with my young kid, it started us on the next difficulty, but keeping our items and score.

Ironically, "Dark Chambers" is more directly credited to John Palevich than "Gauntlet" was. Ed Logg cited Palevich's "Dandy" as the inspiration to "Gauntlet", whereas Palevich wrote "Dandy" as part of his undergraduate thesis at MIT; the idea was originally for a 4-player dungeon crawler in the vein of "Dungeons and Dragons" with another server to provide map data and act as the DM of sorts.
My understanding is that John Palevich still continued to be active in the years since this and "Gauntlet", having had his name credited on several patents as recently as 2011 held by Microsoft and Google among others.

I’ve had both the 2600 and the 7800 and I too prefer the 2600 version, the only thing I miss from the 7800 version is its open screen music but found the 2600 to be more of an Adventure game.
