The number plates are just the universal 9x11 size. That’s really the only size I’ve seen, and I think they fit the bike and that space pretty perfectly. I am thinking about trying black number plates, but I’m afraid they’d blend with the bike too much or that the gloss black would look too cheap and out of place. Definitely stoked to see how the ammo cans end up looking though! They’ll obviously stick out much further, but will be a bit smaller from the side view.
At this point, Coffman should just sponsor you, man. You show off how good their products are consistently. Plus this particular product is better quality, better price and has massive weight savings. Clever thought on the ammo cans, just might want to find a way to seal where you still the holes through. Looking forward to more, like this mythical new bike we heard about.
They actually have sponsored a trip for me before! I don’t let companies sponsor videos like this though because I need to be able to be 100% honest in my opinions when doing any kind of review video. I do have plans to keep the ammo cans water sealed, although it shouldn’t matter too much for me because I avoid rain on this thing like the plague. The disadvantages of having no rear fender 😅😂 The mythical new bike will be revealed as soon as we get our next break from the crappy winter weather we’ve been dealing with! 🤞🏻
@LifeOfBurch Heyo, on the note about making a seal where the mounting holes would go, ya could toss in a bolt from inside of ammo can, and just ONLY dismount the ammo can usint a nut you loosen. I remember seeing in a FortNine video called "Dark Side" or something (where he puts a car tire on the rear wheel then talks about pros and cons) he uses a strong epoxy, if its good enough to keep air in a tire it would be strong enough to not let water in is what I'm thinking. 2nd solution (and able to keep dismounting potential from just opening ammo can lid and using a ratchet screwdriver to loosen the bolt) would be, just an O-ring on the inside of the ammo can, on the bolt so O-ring squishes in between Bolt head and ammo can, and then if ya want redundancy put a 2nd O-ring on the bolt part that is outside the ammo can, a washer to squish the outside O-ring down to the outside wall of the ammo can, and if need to, a simple nut to run down the bolt length and tighten down against the outside ammo can wall to keep pressure on the washer (that's squishing the O-ring). ... sorry for lengthy response, got mentally distractedwith ways to water-proof the mounting holes.
I wanted to thank you, as a very new rider who bought a CL500 like 2 months ago and with zero experience with cars or any other motorized vehicle before that, your channel, your mentality and the mods you did on your bike, all of that has helped me a lot having more fun riding my motorcycle and finding the confidence to start customizing some things to my liking. Also, your bike looks gorgeous with that new exhaust, as cool as the Vance & Hines was, it looked a bit too long and "snakey" to really suit your bike's look, and the number plate idea is really cool too !
Love your videos Burch! For the V&H rust worries, we wouldn't worry about it much. The factory exhaust is made from the same material, steel. The only difference is that the factory muffler has a peep-hole under it that allows the condensation to drain out, where as the V&H one doesn't have the peep hole, so the water could collect or pool some where. Look under the OEM muffler of your SCL500 and you'll see the said peep hole that allows drainage. Once the engine is warmed up, all of the condensation would blast out and the hot air will dry the muffler. Any rust shown is only surface. The OEM muffler would also have the same surface rust as well if you pull out the muffler section and peep inside. If you're worried about the condensation building up, some would run the slip-on clamp slightly loose so that it could drain from there, this is the only thing about running a high-mount exhaust, is that liquid flows to the lowest point, so it has to be released somewhere and the V&H has no where to put the drainage hole at the lowest point (lowest point is actually the OEM header. Just wanted to put it out there for those that are worried! Keep up the great work!

Oh yeah… the number plate is a great touch dude.

Yeah oh well. I’m still gonna keep the V&H around . Might come in handy down the road . Have you noticed any issues with the Coffman and engine operating temp Will it need a tune with the sound suppressor out?
Agree with everyone here on the Coffmans. Your early video led me to get one for my first bike, the Rebel 500, and i love it. Going to do it again on my other bikes.
Great video , loved the Vance & Hines but actually like the new one even better . However not to crazy about those number plates . Isn't it possible to maybe attach panniers over that bracket ?
You can modify the removable baffle on the Coffman's exhaust. I take off the cone shaped metal with the holes in it and put the end piece back in. That actually brings the volume level up about halfway.
Coffman’s gaaang 😎🤘🏻 I just realized that now 4 out of our 6 bikes are rocking a Coffman’s! The Navi and the XR are the only ones that aren’t, and both of those have Yoshi’s 😳
Thanks dude! Typically a tune isn’t needed with just a muffler on most modern bikes. It’ll always help, but not usually necessary. I do have a Power Commander on my Rebel 1100 since I also did an intake, but this will run fine as is!
The exhaust is awesome! And while I’m never one to judge a man’s number plates, I think I’d prefer them a little smaller. Also if smaller, you could maybe put them on the outside of the ammo cans!
I'll be honest I wasn't too sure where you were going with this build at first. I also didn't really like the Vance exhaust. But, the new look and sound is totally killing it.
Hey LOB, I have been a sub for a long time and I remember the vid. of your 500 Rebel and the Coffman's exhaust. It was awesome. I put the Coffman's on my Rebel and I love it. Of course it works well on this bike. I think the engine is the same , yea?
I think the saddlebags are gonna be nice once you figure out how to rig them up. The ammo cans are cool, but semi-rigid waxed canvas bags would be sick.
I considered cutting off the old bracket, but I don’t know if I’m ready to commit like that just yet 😅😂 And for what it’s worth, I think the SCL is sooo much better than the Rebel 500!! I’m loving this thing!
are you planning on adding clip-ons or some sort of handles that are more in line with the cafe racer look? Love the looks of this bike, and you've made it look even better with your mods. Personally I think the number plates are a bit large/loud for my taste. I'm sure those ammo cans will look sick though.
Have you noticed any gains after install, after I put mine on it felt like I had more torque. Maybe that's just the weight savings but definitely different. Also Coffman's has super fast shipping ^^ Love the crackles and burps for the exhaust
the VnH exhausts for the navi broke for almost every person that got them on release. cracked at the flange. they were redesigned and even the new ones had issues. will never touch that company again
100%- it seems that every time a new bike comes out V&H just wants to put out a product as quickly as possible without any regard for quality control. After my Navi exhaust broke- I opted for the refund- but I know people who got the new version STILL had the same exact issue! Ridiculous and inexcusable. I will never buy any of their products ever again.
Because of watching you show case coffmans I am totally hooked and buying a set for my 2008 yamah fjr1300 I have heard a couple fjr on TH-cam and can't seem to beat for thee price and weight savings
Nah, it doesn’t translate well over camera, but it’s way too quiet for my liking with the suppressor still in. Sounds great both ways, but suppressor out is much more my vibe 🙌🏻🤘🏻
nope for years Vance & Hines have been making garbage mild steel rusted exhaust and will never change. Ive had this issue with my Rebel 500 5 years ago and the fact that in 2024 is still happening. They will never change it.
Hey i had a question, if you removed the buffle/db killer will it hurt the engine or no since it just a slip on?i just like louder but scared it might hurt my engine. Thanks
I was wondering, not sure if you answered this already, but how do passengers work on this bike? Is it comfortable for them? Do the aftermarket exhausts make it any better or worse?
Ooh, the tone of the Coffman with baffle in sounds REALLY nice to me, but I do wonder if it would be too loud for us here in Australia with tougher restrictions, and also for my own tastes. It's a tough compromise between tone and volume.
Looking much better with the new exhaust! Hopefully you can share your thought on the engine performance and fuel consumption after the change. Great work dude!
I love what you’ve done to the bike. I have been considering this Honda in particular I started with a Harley Dina and that’s about to get sold. I’m looking at a full faring street bike, but my girlfriend will be starting on a rebel 300 and I didn’t want to leave her in the dust when we start riding again, that will be her first bike but I’ve been riding for 8+ years and I wanted something comparable to what she had so we were kind of on the same field. Looks damn good! Do you have any thoughts on going with Nabi tires on your 500 SC, just wondering if that’s something you are considering it’s something I am considering foolish because I like the way it looks😂
Seat upgrade next? I have a SCL500 and Have copied a few of your upgrades (now on the Coffman's Exhaust). I would like to replace the stock seat and then upgrade to a hybrid sprocket and better lighter chain.
Sound wise it didn't sound much different. However loox wise I think it loox much better. Before you showed the number decals on the sides I thought some throw over bags in a colour co-ordinated denim. You could do that using those plates as a make shift frame.
oh I am so impressed by your kindness instruction guide. thank you so much. and your bike looking nice! I hope you custom your bike like cafe-racer style someday future
So, I went and got lookin. It's 23 by Kringe, thankfully the lyrics are _just_ unique enough to have the Amazon Music webpage with the lyrics show up like waaaay down on the 1st page. The lyric "seen brighter days" really throws the search results a bit off. But hey, "23" by Kringe
"stainless steel" just (usually) means 13% chromium in the steel. Chromium forms chunks when making metal, so you can get stainless with less than 13%, but more usually is not better unless it is a soft metal, like a pot.
Same engine between Rebel 500 and SCL500, the gearing is slightly different with 1 tooth more on the rear sprocket, so that should help the bike have a slight acceleration advantage (when stock vs. stock), The SCL500 has 2 inches more of suspension in the rear, and a half inch of extra suspension in the front. The SCL also has a bigger Front Brake (by 14mm). Skinnier front tire, same rear tire width. The SCL500 has a taller seat (by 4 inches), the rake (angle of front forks) on the SCL500 has came in by an inch helping it be slightly more nimble, the different fuel tank also has a .2 gallon size increase. *Summary: Same engine, different gearing, a bit more nimble (in thanks to shorter rake and smaller front tire), more suspension all around (most noticeable in the rear), with a taller seat by 4 inches, and a different gas tank design that allows 0.2 more fuel capacity*
Hey dude - love the build. The local honda dealership had a SCL500 with the V&H exhaust also high fender kit and bar ends. I didn't really like the look of those mods but I'm glad I watched this video to stray away from the V&H exhaust. Have you come across anyone with the Arrow exhaust for this bike? That's the other one I'm considering. I may just get this Coffman and ride it unless Yoshi comes out with something.
Hey there! You make great videos! I watched your video of your wife riding on the back of your Rebel 500. Has she been on the back of the SCL? I’d like to get a bike where my wife can be comfrotable for a couple hour ride. Thanks!
where are your bar end mirrors from? also totally gutted about the vance and hines exhaust. I have one installed on my cl500 but I was unaware of the potential issues. my shoe has slightly melted on the pipe but nothing dramatic. But the rust is super annoying considering the price we paid
Yup, you could have a passenger just fine! My passenger pegs obviously aren’t on, but this new exhaust would sit a few inches below and behind the footpeg and not interfere at all.
waiting for my IXIL RB slip on to come in for my scl500. Was going to wait for the coffman and if IXIL takes much longer to ship I might scrub that shit and go coffmans xD
The number plates doubling up (or even just the number plate mounting points doubling up) as saddlebag stays is pretty good. ALSO considerations about Moto Camping?! Whaaa? Maybe motocamping trips coming Soon™ 🤔??
How is the wind impact on a high-speed? I'm changing my current bike and was considering this one! Would you recommend this bike for long-distance trips?
It’s hard to say how bad the wind is because my other “highway bike” is my Rebel 1100 with a fairing and hand guards. So the wind impact feels pretty substantial coming off of that, but it’s not really a fair comparison 😂 Memphis Shades does have some pretty rad quick-detach windshields though! memphisshades.com/products/el-paso-sportshield-windshield-honda-scl500-scrambler So you can easily pop it on and off depending on what kind of riding you’re doing. A little birdy told me that they may or may not have some hand guards in the works too 👀 I think with that wind protection and some gel in the seat, you could easily ride all day on one!
Yup, 100%! If you go to Coffman’s website they have pictures with the footpegs still on for reference. The muffler sits a few inches below and behind the footpeg, so zero interference at all 🙌🏻
Hehe, I was laughing beevis and butthead style at "so I don't chip the tip" and then was thinking... take a shot every time Burch says tip haha. At least a tiny buzz.
I've seen some people use ammo cans (like what Burch said he found and will try mounting) find 3D Printed inserts to slide into the ammo cam box and hold a drink cup. Burch has both, number plates but also small saddlebags in the form of Ammo Cans, he just didn't get them installed yet in time to mount them in this video (he did show them off though). It would be awesome to see what all Burch fits into his ammo cans he has. He's said before that he's doesn't like how some saddlebags look, so I'm kinda just thrilled to see he'll be rigging up/making his own saddlebags, hopefully that's a dedicated video but maybe not if it's a huge trial-and-error process, I don't know. *Anyways, the short of it: he's planning to rock both; number plates, as well as a custom-made saddlebag solution.*
I think to offset the weird bracket, an asymmetric single bag is a good solution. And I don't know but wrapping the headers could look dope to fit the look.
A trick from the old days to stop exhausts rotting from the inside: This NEVER occurred on 2 stroke bikes because of the coating of oily residue throughout the exhaust. To get similar protection on a 4 stroke, some people tipped 2 stroke oil in the exhaust and swished it around to coat all of the internals...when the engine is started (accompanied by a cloud of blue smoke!) the oil burns on leaving a coating. Some swore by it and in my experience it definitely seemed to work. That said, oil getting into the cat would not be great so wouldn't do that on the inlet side of the cat and would ensure that the oil completely drained before fitting and then start the bike asap after starting. Raising front wheel would also be wise....do job on a steep hill with bike pointing upwards!
I don't even own this bike but I enjoyed this video. Wish Coffman made a slip on for my bike. Look into the apache cases.feom harbor freight for saddlebags
Love the Coffman's but also love the V&H (except for the rust). Just depends on the look you're going for. I like the number plates but they would look so much better if they weren't white. It just doesn't go with the look of the bike.

Hey LOB, I have been a sub for a long time and I remember the vid. of your 500 Rebel and the Coffman's exhaust. It was awesome. I put the Coffman's on my Rebel and I love it. Of course it works well on this bike. I think the engine is the same , yea?
Thanks for being a longtime subscriber!! Yup, this is essentially the same exact motor as the Rebel 500 🤘🏻
I was gonna get 2 full sized 5.56 metal green ammo cans to put on my 2022 Rebel 500 in green. Saw a video and they looked so good
I think the saddlebags are gonna be nice once you figure out how to rig them up. The ammo cans are cool, but semi-rigid waxed canvas bags would be sick.
Death wheel and die grinder to the old exhaust bracket.
Rebel 500 was my first bike. You're making me want a CL500.
Hope this exhaust works out, let us know how it does
You know when you change the exhaust pipe it was beautiful 👍
Awesome video, well put together broski.
Not huge on the number plates but that’s why it’s your bike, the ammo cans are a great suggestion.
the VnH exhausts for the navi broke for almost every person that got them on release. cracked at the flange. they were redesigned and even the new ones had issues. will never touch that company again
Hell yea dude, that’s awesome!! I’m sure you’re gonna love them! 🙌🏻🤘🏻
@@LifeOfBurch and I think they sound fantastic
Yes, it is better than the old one, but I would put the suppressor back. It just sounds with it.
Nah, it doesn’t translate well over camera, but it’s way too quiet for my liking with the suppressor still in. Sounds great both ways, but suppressor out is much more my vibe 🙌🏻🤘🏻
@@LifeOfBurch With the suppressor in, how does it compare to stock exhaust volume-wise?
nope for years Vance & Hines have been making garbage mild steel rusted exhaust and will never change. Ive had this issue with my Rebel 500 5 years ago and the fact that in 2024 is still happening. They will never change it.
Hey i had a question, if you removed the buffle/db killer will it hurt the engine or no since it just a slip on?i just like louder but scared it might hurt my engine. Thanks
Great sounds from the new exhaust. It sounds like a proper 500. Definitely run it without the silencer and save an extra pound or two 😊
I was wondering, not sure if you answered this already, but how do passengers work on this bike? Is it comfortable for them? Do the aftermarket exhausts make it any better or worse?
Did you take the rear-miles guard?
What registration support are you using?
Do you prefer Coffman's to Vance&Hines?
Where did you get the tank bag? Can you share the link? Thank you. 😊
Ooh, the tone of the Coffman with baffle in sounds REALLY nice to me, but I do wonder if it would be too loud for us here in Australia with tougher restrictions, and also for my own tastes. It's a tough compromise between tone and volume.
Awesome. Sounds great both ways
Thanks Mike! 😬🤘🏻
Orange/Black or Black/Orange plates definitely!
Hey! I have the Scrambler and absolutely love it!! Would you please share where you purchased the tank bag.
Thank you, Mona
Looking much better with the new exhaust! Hopefully you can share your thought on the engine performance and fuel consumption after the change. Great work dude!
Like the SCL 500 content . keep up the good work .
Where do you get the number plate numerical stickers?
Hey! I got this exhaust as well. Could you tell me if your bike now gives off a “popping” sound since installing it?
I like the sound of that a lot without the silencer. It reminds me a lot of my vintage cb200 twin with shorty pipes on it.
Absolutely no excuse for Vance to rust like that.
Agreed 😔
For as much as V&H charges for this shit, it should be stainless!
Sound wise it didn't sound much different. However loox wise I think it loox much better. Before you showed the number decals on the sides I thought some throw over bags in a colour co-ordinated denim. You could do that using those plates as a make shift frame.
That shortie sounds amazing 👍
oh I am so impressed by your kindness instruction guide.
thank you so much. and your bike looking nice!
I hope you custom your bike like cafe-racer style someday future
Thanks so much, that means a lot! 🙏🏻 I’m definitely hoping to keep adding cafe racer influences to this bike!
Great video Burch !!! 🤙🏽
Thanks Marvin!! 😁🤘🏻
Whats the outro song called???
So, I went and got lookin.
It's 23 by Kringe, thankfully the lyrics are _just_ unique enough to have the Amazon Music webpage with the lyrics show up like waaaay down on the 1st page.
The lyric "seen brighter days" really throws the search results a bit off. But hey, "23" by Kringe
@@MotoDash1100Thank you!
That sounded awesome without the suppressor. Now I really want the bike and exhaust.
"stainless steel" just (usually) means 13% chromium in the steel. Chromium forms chunks when making metal, so you can get stainless with less than 13%, but more usually is not better unless it is a soft metal, like a pot.
please, tell me what tank bag you are using?
how does it compare to a rebel 500?
Same engine between Rebel 500 and SCL500, the gearing is slightly different with 1 tooth more on the rear sprocket, so that should help the bike have a slight acceleration advantage (when stock vs. stock),
The SCL500 has 2 inches more of suspension in the rear, and a half inch of extra suspension in the front.
*Summary: Same engine, different gearing, a bit more nimble (in thanks to shorter rake and smaller front tire), more suspension all around (most noticeable in the rear), with a taller seat by 4 inches, and a different gas tank design that allows 0.2 more fuel capacity*
thanks bud@@MotoDash1100
thinking about getting the transalp what do you think should be my next bike from honda rebel 500@@MotoDash1100
Did you do the computer and engine tuning after changeing exhaust?
Hey dude - love the build. The local honda dealership had a SCL500 with the V&H exhaust also high fender kit and bar ends. I didn't really like the look of those mods but I'm glad I watched this video to stray away from the V&H exhaust. Have you come across anyone with the Arrow exhaust for this bike? That's the other one I'm considering. I may just get this Coffman and ride it unless Yoshi comes out with something.
Do vance and hines accept exhaust complaints?
Good video Burch .
I don't really like the number plates .
Damn brother, that sounds great (both versions). I'm looking at one of these, probably put some leather saddle bags and tour on it
I had to watch the video a second time the bike looks so good. Also, just wanted to know if you could still fit a passenger on there?
Yup, you could have a passenger just fine! My passenger pegs obviously aren’t on, but this new exhaust would sit a few inches below and behind the footpeg and not interfere at all.
MUCH BETTER 💪💪💪
waiting for my IXIL RB slip on to come in for my scl500. Was going to wait for the coffman and if IXIL takes much longer to ship I might scrub that shit and go coffmans xD
@lifeofburch what mirrors do you have on it?
The number plates doubling up (or even just the number plate mounting points doubling up) as saddlebag stays is pretty good.
ALSO considerations about Moto Camping?! Whaaa? Maybe motocamping trips coming Soon™ 🤔??
Motocamping round 2 is definitely coming asap! It’ll most likely be on the 1100 though and not this bike.
@@LifeOfBurch What do ya mean Round 2? This would be _summons inner Dude Perfect_ "First try!!" Ya gunkill it this 1st try 😉
Edit: lol, whoops typo.
What a great video I had to laugh watching you doing two or three passes enjoying yourself
The number plates looks sick on the bike.
Thanks Spensa! I’m so stoked on how they turned out!! 🙌🏻
@@LifeOfBurchWow, thanks a lot man👍 That’s the most extensive and helpful response! Really appreciate it!
Does the stock exhaust sound that bad?
hello Burch! did you see Beams Japan's new muffler for CL? the model name is powerheader W, It really nice design
Can the pillion pegs still be used if we leave them on?
Yup, 100%! If you go to Coffman’s website they have pictures with the footpegs still on for reference. The muffler sits a few inches below and behind the footpeg, so zero interference at all 🙌🏻
@LifeOfBurch spot on cheers mate.
@lifeofburch which bike do you like better scl500 or rebel
What could happen if I put on the V&H?
Hehe, I was laughing beevis and butthead style at "so I don't chip the tip" and then was thinking... take a shot every time Burch says tip haha. At least a tiny buzz.
I almost put the “that’s what she said” cutscene there, but wasn’t sure it fit quite right 😂 Wait…that’s what she said?? 🤔😂
Instead of the plate, i would buy sadlebags to store drinks, tools or clothes for traveling.
Bravo mladiću.Pozdrav iz Croatia!❤
You could put a "saddle"-bag on the exhaust mount
The signs aren't super streamline imo.
Looks sweet!
Thanks brotha!! 😁🤘🏻
I like the plate. You could even have a QR code for your channel instead of a number. Either way looks good
Does anyone know if the exhaust ist street legal in Europe / germany ?
Love the Coffman's but also love the V&H (except for the rust). Just depends on the look you're going for. I like the number plates but they would look so much better if they weren't white. It just doesn't go with the look of the bike.
