  • Join us for this week of Aboard Mermaid Monster as the disaster saga continues. However, I am happy to report that there is a happy ending here. Everything always ends up working out as it should as long as you use your brain and be patient…. At least that is what I tell myself. Watch as we explain why the davit stopped working mid lift with the dinghy. We try to do our very best by showing the ups and the downs of boat life in a very real way. Please comment below what you enjoy about our channel as we want to continue to make content that our viewers enjoy watching. On this episode we head out on a 2 day underway cruise from Puerto Rico to Turks and Caicos. We encounter some pretty awesome stuff out on the water this cruise. If you are new here then welcome. We are the Palmer family. We have been living aboard and cruising for 5 years now. With three kids and 1 big dog, life is NEVER dull out on the water. Tune in every Sunday at 9am ET for a brand new episode! Cheers

Baby in the Captains chair is classic……..when we crossed the gulf in our Grand Banks 42 we had 20 to 25 kts of wind from the stern and we would go from 17kts down the waves to 13 kts up the waves, my wife did not like it. But, for me being an ex fighter pilot it was fun……..another great video!

The thing to always remember is a boat like a Nordhavn can take a lot more than the humans. So always design the trip to accommodate the passengers. Boat glitches always seen to happen at the most inopportune time, but that is life on the water.

Everything on the fly. I remember back in trade school a friend having a unique discussion with the instructor as to where power starts. The instructor was set on it starting from the positive side while my friend said the negative. It's an interesting concept for discussion. Most issues when in any type of automotive type electrical, will be associated with proper grounding. Remember when Detroit started coming out with their series 60 design and the cpu. Most of the problems at the time was around the grounding. Any electrical device that is rubber insulated for vibration, etc., should be grounded externally.
Swells. The essence of the sea. Remember back when my dad and I where out in his homebuilt wooden cab cruiser. 17 1/2 feet, trying to get into some sheltered bay as the seas where starting to grow. The swells where around 10-12 feet, about 4 seconds apart with a 3-4 white cap on top. I recall as we dove down into the tunnel how our boat dissappeared. Quite the journey till we slipped into cove on an island. One of which back in the twenties or thirties, was a fox farm. Go figure! Southeast Alaska.
If you haven't been to Southeast Alaska, have the urge and time, recommend it. Rains alot, sometimes blistering squals but, some of the most serene landscape.
    Be safe out there folks....

If you can drill a tinny hole in the structure of the boat and the pump and run a small wire to both it will do the trick screwing the wire to the holes.

All you need is a whale to jump up and.....when all of you are out on deck without PFDs. Even 80 years ago, when I was these children's age, My Dad made sure my Brother and I wore our "life jackets" (as they were known then) whenever we went out on deck....at anchor or underway.....on our 52 footer and later, when we were in our teens, aboard our 83 footer. Not to mention the same rule appled suring my time on the US COast Guard International Weather Patrol Cutter CAMPBELL in the Labrador (9k NM) and North Atlantic (55k NM) oceans.

The spark was the electricity jumping the air gap to ground from the pump case. You can get star washers that will cut through paint/powder-coating when you crank a grounding screw/bolt into the hole. Prevents you from having to remove a bunch of paint to get a proper ground and expose that larger area to salt and corrosion in the marine environment. What a beautiful trip. Makes up for some of the previous hmmm, adventures. Ya gotta love a little surfing of a following sea. :-)

It is so cool to see the crew take the controls at the helm ( all of them) and other spots on the deck, good deckhands, make great captains. The video was very good. All of it, the beginning was very cool, breaking the bar was even better. The crane/tender fail had to be a cluster... just had to be. Yeah but Yeah but. You are in one of the top rated vessels for what you are doing. Always remember, Energy, power, AC/DC, personal, from the sun and day is all about being grounded. Energy has to be used and then go someplace, I love you for what you are doing, keep teaching, keep growing and keep learning. Happy Mothers Day! We all pick a coarse, we also can modify it to be US. The main course is the most important , hugs to all of you! Keep working on your dream.

Here's the thing and why she is a great Captain.
It's safety first and she's always thinking ahead, scenarios running around, and creating what ifs and back ups.
And, if she pulled out the life jackets and god forbid had to order the crew to put them on. The first thing I would do is put it on.

The sparking is arching because it doesn’t have a proper ground, scrape the paint off and secure it you should be fine. As you know don’t mess with fire on a boat.
