Even dying at sea is much better than living a non-life of unquiet desperation on land. I plan to buy a Cheoy Lee 33 ketch, 48 years old, and sail off into the sunset. And encounter no end of grief. So be it.
No, land is not a sailboats friend. Once you set sail you have only two enemies, big waves and rocks. Deep water is your friend, wide oceans are your sanctuary. Be very weary of heading for shore in a storm. The shore is rocks. You are sailors, you must let go of the shore, and learn to stay safe in big waves. I was a delivery skipper for 20 years. I never left the dock without a proper sea anchor, (Pardy style) ready to deploy from the cockpit. Your beautiful boat will carry all of your dreams to the top of every wave and beyond. Always have a sea anchor, and never race for the shore. Write that down.
A sea anchor looks like a parachute and works like a massive brake in the water. Use a sea anchor when you want to stop as much of the boats travel through the water as possible, if you were being pushed toward a lee shore, for example. While a drogue is similar it can be used to "moderate" the boat's speed, depending on how much of it is paid out. It just creates drag. A big old car tire on the end of a line can be quite effective. It is worth having both. You will find youtube videos on all of this. Happy sailing! @@sailing1stwatch
So often, with costal cruising, one is thinking that you need to make the destination achorage by nightfall, so you end up motoring all the time. But when you are doing the big puddle jump, it really doesn't make a lot of difference as to whether the passage takes 4 weeks or 6, so you might as well just chill and accept what mother nature gives you.
Thanks for finally putting up the Super Thanks button! I know YT takes a bit, but sooooo easy to support our pals Brooke and Gary.....looking forward to the watch! Enjoy a mango, guava, pineapple on us! Hope all well and fun!!! Hugs! 🤗
Aw thanks so much Obie and Laurie! we finally figured out how to turn on the button. 😂 We will have mangos and some ice cream too! Big hugs to you two!
Anxiety has to be a thing, especially on the first few days. No winds, sickness, big winds and seas, bad sleep, etc. Dreams of what is to come is a big motivator!!!
It would be nice to see you guys secure the dingy upside down on your fore deck. Many sailors have lost theirs by big waves ripping the them off along with the dingy davits, Great video and hate that you both got sick one after the other in the first week that had to be tough for sure. All the Very Best. Jim Rodgers
Hi Jim! Yes, we thought long and hard about this. Our issue is with our dinghy on our foredeck, it is in the way of our staysail. We opted to be able to use our staysail and risk the dinghy on the davits.
The bittersweet realities of sailing were so expertly presented to all of us wishing we were there beside you. Imagine adventuring through these conditions, makes the next four years seem like sweet honey, mangoes, and the smell of the local ports you journey, a worthwhile trade off. You will be able to handle anything thrown your way. Have a safe journey, glad your feeling better and prepare for the adventure of a lifetime. 💨 ⚓️🌊
little hint that might help you guys out, when cooking bacon, cut strips in half, they are easier to handle and the cook faster which means less gas use ... when trying to use cutting board or trying to fix a plate of food when seas are ruff, put a towel down and it won`t slide allover counter ....... Safe Travels .... SV Willow on the D/L
Thanks for the tip on the cloth under the cutting board/cookware. A few people have mentioned that and I've given it a go and it seems to work much better! Too bad I didn't know this tip on our crossing! Cheers!
Hi guys. Catching up on your videos. Was watching when you struggled with your asym. You might have gotten already but just in case. You really need a shackle that releases under load at the tack. You release it and the sail blows away from the boat and you can shade it from wind with the main. Stay safe.
When you are out on the foredeck I’d like to see you both tethered to the life line. Going overboard at sea while underway isn’t a good thing. A great v-log and I’m looking forward to watching your adventure. Good luck!
Hi there :) We should tether in more often, you are right! Sometimes it's hard to move around on the foredeck strapped in but much better than the alternative! Thanks for coming along with us!
At the risk of sounding mean, I'm glad you grew your hair and your beard.. you don't look so much like a dork...lol you look like a sailor now.. LOL I love watching sailing videos , you two are a couple of my favorites.... I like spirit animal to, they make me laugh.... keep living the dream my friends , you're a lucky man... you got a beautiful wife and a beautiful life....

Hi both What a great video (the real world) highs and lows. With you both not feeling well and the toilet not working, I really feel for you! Hope you feel better soon. Keep your chin up👍🥰🥰🏴
For you and everyone else cooking under way: to keep your cutting board in place, put it on a dampened dish- or hand-towel. Pained me to see you struggling in the galley. Good voyage.

You poor things! I have a chefs tip for you though - put a wet towel or dishcloth under the cuttingboard. It will stay still. And the plates - do like the Wynns - put a line of silicon under. Fair winds! /Catta

We had the exact same rug! Those ocean sunsets and sunrises are amazing. Put those flying fish on a hook or in a frying pan. I can't imagine going across the Pacific. Thankfully I have never been seasick, but it's just too long at sea for me. Good on you for conquering it!
I Have binge watched your adventures and you two are so inspirational. You are truly living a dream and have convinced me that I need to buy a boat when I retire and see the world. Wishing you both safety and happiness in your future adventures.

Real life is so much more satisfying to watch and just feeling the hope that you will feel better to get back to where you think you ought to be in that ocean crossing. That is So awesome maybe you can find Colin and Crew on SV Parlay they doing the Same Trip but they are on a Catamaran . It be sweet if you can Catch them. Good luck
Great video that captures all the emotional highs and lows of a passage. The lows build experience that nothing can stop you from going forward in life and the highs are forever in the memory banks as some of the best days of your lives. ❤
First time viewer to your channel - hats off to you, not easy sailing conditions - just a quick tip for future trips you should buy the little rubber mats that you can place under your chopping boards to stop them sliding in swell - work a treat on my boat. Can’t wait for more!
Hi Giles! Thanks for stopping by to check out our channel. Appreciate the tip on the mat. Next time we are in a place we can do some shopping I'll try to pick one up.
Having sailed the Pacific a number of times, not actually under sail but it is still called sailing, I cannot help but wonder if you all REALLY know just how big the Pacific is. It is one thing to look at it on a chart. Quite another to actually experience it. It is truly amazing.

Hi there! Ah wow, thank you for coming along with us on this journey! We appreciate you sending the good vibes our way. Hopefully you can get out on the big blue soon!
Good video. Watching from Kaohsiung, Taiwan where my wife is taking an ASA101 course. Crossing the Pacific seems an ocean away from practicing tacking, gybing and man over board in Chinese!

Thank you for sharing your story. It feeds my soul. I am "touched, moved and inspired". The details of my dream differs from yours. However, the intention is the same. To get out there, follow the dream, come what may and, don't listen to the naysayers. One can start from 0 experience. Put in the work, train, practice and become competent. This is so refreshing. I spent the last week being told, NO, Not Possible, Bad idea, Try something different. I think I needed to hear it all. It was a test. I say that because in the face of it my heart and mind hasn't changed. I didn't take it on as my limit. I realized it was theirs. Best of luck. Thank you again.
Hey Michael! We agree, it is not your limit, it is theirs. There will always be naysayers, keep chasing your dream! With determination, resilience and hard work, anything is possible! Happy New Year!! 🥂💙
Hear your background story was pretty amazing. A little crazy, but for us the viewers, so glad you did it. You're a groovy couple. The start of your latest trip sucks. Both getting really sick and the head going down. I think most people would of turned the boat around and gone back to port. Hang in there. At least you got tacos. Stay safe and stay groovy. PS you need to purchase a cheap camping porta potty.
Hey Mark! Ha yeah we may be a little crazy but doesn't everyone have some level of crazy?! 😂 Thanks for always rooting for us out here. See ya next episode!
I'm getting addicted to some of the sailing channels out there. You sailor's are the 1% that have the mental fortitude, resilience, emotional intelligence and zest for life that is needed to do this! Incredible!
Even dying at sea is much better than living a non-life of unquiet desperation on land. I plan to buy a Cheoy Lee 33 ketch, 48 years old, and sail off into the sunset. And encounter no end of grief. So be it.
Life at sea is a good way to be! ⛵
O man, many sailors die on the sea too but they do not write books or make YT videos :(
-and very expensive? ;)
Did u buy it ? ❤

Hi Charlie! We agree, land is not a sailboats friend. Thanks for the well wishes!
Great advice.
I’m not a sailor but that sounds like great advice !
What is a sea anchor? And what are your thoughts on Droges?
A sea anchor looks like a parachute and works like a massive brake in the water. I think anyone who can live on a boat going across the Pacific and still are together, are strong people.
Hi there! Thank you:) yes, it's not easy at times!

Yes, very true! 💨⛵
This is, without a doubt, the most realistic account of sea life on a small craft that i've ever seen. Thank you!
Hey Walt! We appreciate you coming along with us!
@@SailingOneLife Hopefully I'll be doing my own sailing within the next year or two. I would prefer this week but I have my doubts LOL

Hey Thomas! 100% anxiety levels were high at first but we had our eyes set on the bigger picture so we were able to stay focused on that.
Happy to see the realism you guys bring to this adventure nice job holding it together . Onward we go no matter what !!!
Thanks, David! Absolutely, onward we go! 🙌⛵
have to agree ! Keep on rolling for a new day ,adventures...and if she is doing oke ,she will bring good nice sunny days..
I always used these flying fish as bait, and it always worked as a chalm

jackline tethers are much safer than lifelines and preferably close to the boat's centreline.

Be safe have fun all be watching every episode
Thank you! Excited to share the rest of our passage with everyone!
Awesome video; long and entertaining; real world. "THANKS" so much for sharing!!!

Congratulations on the start. “ the journey is just begun. “
“Stay strong “❤❤
Thank you! 💙⛵
I'm getting addicted to some of the sailing channels out there. You sailor's are the 1% that have the mental fortitude, resilience, emotional intelligence and zest for life that is needed to do this! Incredible!
Wow, thank you for the awesome comment! We appreciate you coming along with us out here!
