No, land is not a sailboats friend. Once you set sail you have only two enemies, big waves and rocks. Deep water is your friend, wide oceans are your sanctuary. Be very weary of heading for shore in a storm. The shore is rocks. You are sailors, you must let go of the shore, and learn to stay safe in big waves. I was a delivery skipper for 20 years. I never left the dock without a proper sea anchor, (Pardy style) ready to deploy from the cockpit. Your beautiful boat will carry all of your dreams to the top of every wave and beyond. Always have a sea anchor, and never race for the shore. Write that down.
Hi Charlie! We agree, land is not a sailboats friend. Thanks for the well wishes!
Great advice.
I’m not a sailor but that sounds like great advice !
What is a sea anchor? And what are your thoughts on Droges?
A sea anchor looks like a parachute and works like a massive brake in the water. Use a sea anchor when you want to stop as much of the boats travel through the water as possible, if you were being pushed toward a lee shore, for example. While a drogue is similar it can be used to "moderate" the boat's speed, depending on how much of it is paid out. It just creates drag. A big old car tire on the end of a line can be quite effective. It is worth having both. You will find youtube videos on all of this. Happy sailing! @@sailing1stwatch
I think anyone who can live on a boat going across the Pacific and still are together, are strong people.
Hi there! Thank you:) yes, it's not easy at times!
So often, with costal cruising, one is thinking that you need to make the destination achorage by nightfall, so you end up motoring all the time. But when you are doing the big puddle jump, it really doesn't make a lot of difference as to whether the passage takes 4 weeks or 6, so you might as well just chill and accept what mother nature gives you.
Yes, very true! 💨⛵
Even dying at sea is much better than living a non-life of unquiet desperation on land. I plan to buy a Cheoy Lee 33 ketch, 48 years old, and sail off into the sunset. And encounter no end of grief. So be it.
Life at sea is a good way to be! ⛵
O man, many sailors die on the sea too but they do not write books or make YT videos :(
-and very expensive? ;)
Thx for sharing this voyage , i will say in the strongest terms to always have your life lines clipped in and if you think this is to much to do going forward for couple minutes think what your partner is going to go through waking up and finding you gone , thousands of men have been flicked off by a sudden lurch of the sea don't be one of them be safe , the other thing you might consider is don't sail downwind go off course 15/20 degrees , it will save your auto pilot and you , pretty obvious your boat doesn't have the keel an beam to run downwind in comfort so why push it , put it on a long reach and tack , will be less wear and tear on the boat and you , and you may even get there faster , you have the hopes of an old sailor for your safety 🙂 Godspeed
Thank you! Not sure why we weren't clipped in, we had the lines ready and everything! We did try running 15-20 off the wind but with the big swell our Genoa kept collapsing and wouldn't hold wind.
@@SailingOneLife Nothing to be done about the swell on a small boat , the direction it comes from makes a difference and it will change along with the wind , sailing is making friends with sail changes , sea and wind , the Pacific is a large ocean , if you get tired run even 40 degrees off get a rest , you don't have to have the genoa up to make the same speed over time if with a smaller jib you can run 125/140 miles or mess with the genoa and in fits an starts make 150/170 , do you care ? happy you txt back about being clipped in because i have gone over board racing and watched the boat sail away and been picked up by a boat behind us , i have been swimming my whole life and watching a boat sail away from you and thinking now i have to tread water till i can't is not a happy thought . your hitting weather from the southern ocean , our weather has been changing , Wish You the best of luck 🙂

Happy to see the realism you guys bring to this adventure nice job holding it together . Onward we go no matter what !!!
Thanks, David! Absolutely, onward we go! 🙌⛵
have to agree ! Keep on rolling for a new day ,adventures...and if she is doing oke ,she will bring good nice sunny days..
Great video! Love how well you captured the reality of the crossing and thanks for letting us follow along!
Thanks for coming along with us and being our land support, Matt!

The bittersweet realities of sailing were so expertly presented to all of us wishing we were there beside you. Imagine adventuring through these conditions, makes the next four years seem like sweet honey, mangoes, and the smell of the local ports you journey, a worthwhile trade off. You will be able to handle anything thrown your way. Have a safe journey, glad your feeling better and prepare for the adventure of a lifetime. 💨 ⚓️🌊
Thank you! We really appreciate your comment! It was our goal to show what it is really like out here. Happy to see that came through on the video.
Thanks for finally putting up the Super Thanks button! I know YT takes a bit, but sooooo easy to support our pals Brooke and Gary.....looking forward to the watch! Enjoy a mango, guava, pineapple on us! Hope all well and fun!!! Hugs! 🤗
Aw thanks so much Obie and Laurie! we finally figured out how to turn on the button. 😂 We will have mangos and some ice cream too! Big hugs to you two!
That's a rough 6 days start....we feel for you. Lazy sunny days to come soon!
Ugh yes, not how we wanted to start out a long sail but luckily we recovered pretty quickly.
Anxiety has to be a thing, especially on the first few days. No winds, sickness, big winds and seas, bad sleep, etc. Dreams of what is to come is a big motivator!!!
Hey Thomas! 100% anxiety levels were high at first but we had our eyes set on the bigger picture so we were able to stay focused on that.
Sure is a bummer y’all are fighting that bug. Sorry about that and hope y’all are feeling better by now. Thanks SO SO MUCH for bringing us along! Wishing y’all the best!
Luckily we got over it pretty quickly! Looking forward to sharing our next video!
Such a great video! So happy to getting to see the beginning of your journey! I can’t imagine how hard it must be fighting off sickness and dealing with conditions like those. But you guys are champs! If you can make it through this, you can make it through anything!
Hahaha it's your turn soon! There's still time to say no! 😂⛵
Hope you both are feeling better fast!! Good for you, for finding joy in journey.
Thank you! All good now!
Yay! Brook and Gary! I am so happy for you guys. I been following your adventures for about a year now. You always inspire me with your fantastic teamwork. I will be with you both on this adventure in spirit anyway.
Hi Jay! Thanks for coming along with us! We really appreciate you cheering us on out here.
Wow!!! That's gotta be, hands down, the most inspiring opening! I'm pumped
Thank you! 🙌⛵
I do appreciate you keeping it real; thank you so much, really enjoying the content!
Thank you! So good to hear you are enjoying our channel!
Super cool your doing it and hang in there for the rough stuff coming your way be safe you 2,, love watching you guys.
Thanks, Brian!
Love you guys. Hope you have a wonderful sail out into the blue.
Thanks so much, Scott! 💙
Wow, great job you 2 I was totally immersed in this episode, and was bummed when it ended. Hopefully by now y’all are feeling better and have some naughty miles behind you. Best of luck and look forward to the continued adventures of Gary and Brooke!
Hi Donald! Happy to hear you enjoyed this episode. Looking forward to getting our next video finished!
What a great moment to be heading out. Hope Gary gets better. Yay the wind. Wow, rough, but nice to see it calming down a bit. Oh no, hope Brooke gets better soon as well. I feel for you guys, I hope things get better all round for you. Well done for making Tacos in that roll. Love the vlog :)
Thank you! Luckily our colds didn't linger for very long! Hope you have a great weekend! See ya next video!
Congratulations! You are on your way. I love how comfortable your cockpit looks. I’ll be following your passage.
Hi David! We love our new enclosed cockpit. So nice to be able to zip ourselves in and stay dry!
I am enjoying this adventure along with you as I did with Sailing Zatara. I have sorta binged watched many of your previous video logs. Since I am a Florida senior and my adventurous years are behind me I love living vicariously through you guys. Be safe and fun journey.
Hi there! Thanks for coming along with us! Hope you are enjoying the journey. Very nice to hear that you are in Florida! Cheers!
Nice video! Hope your colds were short lived and you were soon able to better enjoy the adventure. Thanks for taking us with you. All the best...
Hi Steve! Thanks for coming along with us! Yes, thankfully our colds were short lived!
Awsome yall are giving some of us the only chance to really experience an adventure of this nature. My upmost respect to yall. Thanks
Thanks for coming along with us on this adventure!
I Have binge watched your adventures and you two are so inspirational. You are truly living a dream and have convinced me that I need to buy a boat when I retire and see the world. Wishing you both safety and happiness in your future adventures.
Hi there :) Thank you for joining us on this journey! We look forward to crossing paths one day. ⛵🙌
little hint that might help you guys out, when cooking bacon, cut strips in half, they are easier to handle and the cook faster which means less gas use ... when trying to use cutting board or trying to fix a plate of food when seas are ruff, put a towel down and it won`t slide allover counter ....... Safe Travels .... SV Willow on the D/L
Thanks for the tip on the cloth under the cutting board/cookware. A few people have mentioned that and I've given it a go and it seems to work much better! Too bad I didn't know this tip on our crossing! Cheers!
You two are doing a great job finding your way in the unknown and becoming what's been your calling for so long. 'Great seeing you taking this step in destiny. Highest Blessings
Thank you so much! We appreciate the good vibes!
Hard start. Betting the end goal will be even more rewarding. Looking forward to watching more! Thanks Crew!!!
More to come soon! 🥰
Great video that captures all the emotional highs and lows of a passage. The lows build experience that nothing can stop you from going forward in life and the highs are forever in the memory banks as some of the best days of your lives. ❤
Thanks, Bob! Really appreciate your comment. We definitely felt every range of emotion during this sail. An experience of a lifetime!
Admire the adventure you are living! Kudos. Trust the worst is behind you
Thank you, Bruno! ⛵🙌
I've been watching your channel for about a year, don't think I have missed one episode. Anyone watching can see all the effort you both have put in to get to this point in your lives. I will continue to live vicariously through one life. One day we hope to embark on a journey like you all are accomplishing! Fair Winds and Following Seas!
Hi there! Ah wow, thank you for coming along with us on this journey! We appreciate you sending the good vibes our way. Hopefully you can get out on the big blue soon!
It's on now! From the frying pan into the fire. So far you two are doing great through the challenges. Those flying fish, when they're even smaller than that first one you showed, are very colorful and remind me of the fancy guppies in a pet shop. Safe passage !
Thanks for all the encouragement!
Ha, yep can totally see why flying fish remind you of the pet shop guppies!
I always used these flying fish as bait, and it always worked as a chalm
Flying fish as bait is a great idea!
Oh brooke feeling your pain and overwhelmedness but love your candor and spirit , loved the video
Hi Rikki! Thank you! Hope you are doing great. Where are you now? 💜
Awesome video! You guys are fantastic and i love following your journey.
Thanks for coming along with us, Greg!
Great video Brooke and Gary. I can't wait to watch the next one.
Thanks, Raul! Hope you are doing great!
Sorry for your rough start. Glad you guys were feeling better after a few days. Great to be along. Cheers 🥂
Hi Trent! Thanks for coming along and always rooting for us out here! :)
Great video showing us the start of your crossing, especially with you two being sick and putting up with big swells.
Thank you! Luckily the colds didn't linger too long.
Thanks guy's for a absolutely fantastic episode!! You two look so dam happy to be out sailing again!!! Enjoy guy's and safe travels!!
Hi Danny! Yessss! It felt so good to actually be out there DOING IT after talking about it for so long!
I really appreciate the spirit you have in doing this passage. Keep going!!
Thank you! Onward we go! 🙌⛵
Simply amazing! I just loved every second of your vlog. Thank you for what you are doing.
Hi there:) thank you! Happy to hear you enjoyed the video!
You guys are troopers and so inspiring! We never noticed before you have a dock box on the boat! Great video! Love you guys!
Thanks guys! The dock box is where we store our dive compressor! Hope you are doing great!
Good luck on your trip crossing the Pacific. I hope you two feel better soon.😊💙❤🦋🎉
Thank you so much! 💙
This was actually an awesome video. I'm sorry you had to deal with having a cold, but we got a good portrayal of the realities of what sailing can truly be. We all love the wonderful sunrises and sunsets. We enjoy the times that it's all smooth sailing and you're just kicked back and relaxed. Those of us watching along probably forget that all the fantastic locations and beautiful vistas we get to see ,are tempered with You two actually working through the unseen by us travails the ocean throws your way. This was a good example of why I enjoy your vids so much, we see reality, and you just work through the hardships with a smile. Hopefully smooth sailing is ahead.
Hi Terrance! Thank you! Yes, we thought it would be nice to show the reality of what it's like. Glad you enjoyed it!
Loved the intro! Great look back. Really emphasizes how far you’ve come❤
Aw, thanks! We thought it would be nice to do a little throwback! 💜
Awesome video guys. U guys have already done some serious travels. Admirable your courage to sell everything and go on this life changing adventure. Thank u for taking the less courage-able on this awesome journey. ❤🙌🏼🙏🏻feel better , safe travels
Hi Jorge! As always, thank you for such a nice comment. We enjoy having you along with us on this journey. Hope you are having a good week.
Even sick as dogs you guys gave us a great episode. Looking forward to the next. Have fun guys
Hey Dane, thank you! Hope you are doing well!
Wow Sailors, just keep on going or should I say keep on SAILING .
Love your channel
Thank you so much! Onward we go! ⛵🙌
Having sailed the Pacific a number of times, not actually under sail but it is still called sailing, I cannot help but wonder if you all REALLY know just how big the Pacific is.
It is one thing to look at it on a chart. Quite another to actually experience it.
It is truly amazing.
Thank you! Yes, the Pacific Ocean is huge!
Ooooh, I love yall's spray dodger twice as see thru as most ,wow !! Nice
Thank you! It was a real pain in the butt to make it like that! 😂 But worth the view now!
It only gets better from here... The sunsets are remarkable...
Thank you! Looking forward to sharing our next episode!
Awesome video.......felt like I was right there.......the good with the bad.... way to go you two
Thanks, Steve! We appreciate you following along with us!
Great Video. I wanted to be there with you guys and take a watch to let you both start feeling better.
Ah thank you! Thankfully our colds only lasted a few days!
Great video! Hope you guys are well and do not get sick again. Stay safe and god bless your journey.
Thank you! Luckily our colds didn't linger for long!
Heavy colds rolly seas and inevitable seasickness and you both still manage to smile a lot, even if it was just for the camera you're still stars.
Ah thanks, Ian! There wasn't too much else we could do but laugh it off and smile!
Your dream are coming true and you only have the two of you to blame! Love it when dreams come true!
Happy sailing and may the wind be always on your back! (Star board?❤ from 🇨🇦
Thank you so much! 💙⛵
The great adventure begins well done folks :)
Thanks for coming along with us!
Amazing to watch this journey. ❤
Thanks for coming along with us!
When you are out on the foredeck I’d like to see you both tethered to the life line. Going overboard at sea while underway isn’t a good thing. A great v-log and I’m looking forward to watching your adventure. Good luck!
Hi there :) We should tether in more often, you are right! Sometimes it's hard to move around on the foredeck strapped in but much better than the alternative! Thanks for coming along with us!
jackline tethers are much safer than lifelines and preferably close to the boat's centreline.
Always reef before night. If the weather comes up at night, you are ready. Changing sails at night in a blow is dangerous and frightening. Just trying to help.
Yes, agreed! Always easier and safer to reef sails before the sun goes down.
@@SailingOneLife I have sailed 200,000 miles including 11 transatlantics and four times across the Pacific. I reef when the wind blows harder. If your skills and gear aren't up to reefing at night you need to stay home.
@@deerfootnz your epeen is making the internet worse than it already is. Keep it to yourself or be constructive.
Hope you guys are feeling better thanks for sharing the start of your crossing.
Hey Rich! Thanks! Luckily our colds only lasted a few days.
Thanks for sharing your pacific ocean crossing, what an adventure!
Thanks for coming along, Eduardo! Looking forward to sharing the next video.
@@SailingOneLife Lots of Nautical Miles, lots of fun!
Great vid, enjoy the passage keep them sail full.
Thank you! We look forward to sharing the next episode!
Great job 👏
Thank you! 🙌⛵
Great episode. Keep them coming.
Thanks, Dax! More coming soon!
For you and everyone else cooking under way: to keep your cutting board in place, put it on a dampened dish- or hand-towel. Pained me to see you struggling in the galley. Good voyage.
Thanks for the tip! I'll try this!
@SailingOneLife my advice was going to be installing magnetic strips in the future so you can place the cutting board and it'll stay.
We had the exact same rug! Those ocean sunsets and sunrises are amazing. Put those flying fish on a hook or in a frying pan. I can't imagine going across the Pacific. Thankfully I have never been seasick, but it's just too long at sea for me. Good on you for conquering it!
Too funny that you had the same rug! It is quite a long passage. Thanks for the comment!
nice.
Particularly enjoyed the intro of this episode.
Thanks, Dave! We thought the intro would be a nice little throwback! Glad you noticed!
You can't beat real life on One Life. Lol
Long periods of boredom followed by moments of sheer excitement.
Hahaha yup that's exactly it! Lots of boredom til chaos ensues!
I have seen the series and I am getting ready to watch it again. You folks are great!
Ah so glad you are enjoying our channel!
I did everything you are up too. Remember… Life ALWAYS GOES BACK TOO GOOD. Best of luck and welcome too Sailing ❤. Richard
Hi Richard, thank you! We appreciate the good vibes!
I’m sure you’ve answered this before. Do you normally stay healthy on a long run with no exposure to others? Love your positive attitudes and never ending smiles!
Hi there! This is the first time either of us has been sick like this during a sail. Typically we stay pretty healthy.
Great job you two! Landlubbers all think a 40' boat is big. But it gets real small when you're on the open ocean. And your closing line truly summarizes it all. First time watching your channel, I'm subscribed. I'm glad I found you after your refit, because that's my world right now, so this is a welcome encouragement!
Thanks, Jason! Ha yeah 40ft isn't much boat in this massive ocean! Best wishes on your refit! Hope you get on the water soon!
You guys doing great, boat life is a real relationship tester! Thanks for sharing a realistic experience.
Thank you! Ha yeah some days are a wee bit more challenging than others but that's all part of the journey!
What an amazing adventure
Thanks, Tammy!
Sorry you guys got sick but thanks for toughing it out and continuing to film for us! Great episode. Hope you are both feeling much better!
Hi guys! Yes, thankfully our colds didn't linger too long.
@@SailingOneLife that’s good!
To bad for the rough start, I've had that same crud for a week and I'm on the other side of the world. All can only get better from this point. Thanks for the video, know it took a lot with the way you two were feeling. Hope you guys are doing better.
Thanks, Jack! Luckily our colds didn't linger for too long!
Thank you guys for let us be part of this amazing journey 🌊🎣
Thanks for coming along with us!
Congratulations on the start. “ the journey is just begun. “
“Stay strong “❤❤
Thank you! 💙⛵
Well done guys. Best of luck.
Thank you! :)
Can’t imagine both feeling unwell on start of long sail ,great content ,thanks
Hi Graham! Thanks! Yeah the colds weren't ideal but luckily they didn't linger!
Hooray for the bucket. Never clogs, always flushes. Good job
Haha, old reliable! 🚽🪠
This is, without a doubt, the most realistic account of sea life on a small craft that i've ever seen. Thank you!
Hey Walt! We appreciate you coming along with us!
@@SailingOneLife Hopefully I'll be doing my own sailing within the next year or two. I would prefer this week but I have my doubts LOL
Hey guys awesome job on the video showin real life at sea! Been busy and away for a bit but glad to see ya headed out! Have fun be safe! Fair winds and following seas!! Later! Hugs!!
Thank you! We appreciate the good vibes and all the hugs! 🥰
'... further from the safety of land' Interesting, that is exactly the opposite of my feelings!! Good luck to you and fair winds.
Yes, that is true too! Land is a frightening place sometimes!
Interesting situation. One almost wonders , as would an astronaut, if one should isolate for at least a week before sailing across the seas. That way you know your going to be good, as after all, the fastest I've seen is 19 days, longest is 60 days. So, being able to handle just about anything is very important ! Imagine sick and SOLO ! Wow.
Prepping food, well, yah, that is what someone could do during that isolation time, 5 days minimum. My two fridges would keep it in good shape. That said, typically, 4 days out, things settle down regardless. I LOVE one life, your boat is basic, your channel name is awesome, and you two are inspiring. Thanks. People always throw those flying fish back in as they are fatty and stink. That makes them excellent bait though. Dolphins love them but are smart enough to notice a hook.
Yeah, you know we planned for lots of scenarios but getting colds right out of the gate was not one! We have a fridge and freezer onboard and both were stuffed with food. No room for prepared meals. My logic was if it was too rough to cook, we probably wouldn't feel like eating anyway. 🤣
Wow...Just WOW!! Somewhere I've always wanted to see and the kinda cool thing is?? I get to go with you!! Thanks you guys!!! Just too cool! ;)
Hey Doug! Thanks for coming along with us!
Y'all are doing great Awesome video!
Thanks, Mark!
What a pleasure to see a contrast between white beaches and bikini girls to describe "ocean crossing". Real life is so much more satisfying to watch and just feeling the hope that you will feel better to get back to where you think you ought to be in that ocean crossing. The effort to make these videos when sick is really worth it. Well done and I hope you both feel better soon so YOU can enjoy the crossing.
Thank you so much! Happy to hear you enjoyed this video! And yep, we recovered from our colds quickly!
Sick at sea, not good! Good to see you both again this week and happy to see you still on your way. Get well and eat more tacos!
Hey Ed! Yeah definitely not ideal but we made it through! We agree more tacos please!
Great video!
Thank you! :)
Super courageous to take this on. Just started watching.
Thank you! We hope you enjoy the journey!
Hi you two, Always happy to see your smiling faces, Yeah, Sushi is good for bugs at sea. Throw out a couple lines. Best to you always. .
Hi David! Thank you :) At this point in the passage we didn't have the energy for fishing. 😂
I can’t imagine how hard it would be to be rolling around like that day after day! Really interesting to see what you do during the day and how hard it is to make meals!
Ha yeah it wasn't easy and quite frustrating/annoying at times. We really don't do too much during the day in rolly conditions. 😂
Awesome
Thanks :)
Fair winds and following seas Brook & Gary 🙂 Great vlog
Thank you! ⛵🙌
Hi both
What a great video (the real world) highs and lows. With you both not feeling well and the toilet not working, I really feel for you!
Hope you feel better soon. Keep your chin up👍🥰🥰🏴
Hi there! Thank you! We really appreciate the good vibes!
Awesome, these challenges are what make us but Gary oh my God you're clean shaven faceing the beginning compared to the beard wow, You're the man!
Bwahahaha we call that look 'corporate' Gary. He has transitioned nicely into 'salty' Gary.
Hard core!!! Great video 😊😊
Thanks, guys! 💜
