I miss you so much VOG. I started playing hockey and goalie in 2019 at 31 and your videos helped me a lot and it’s sad to have seen you hang up the pads but I understand. I watch your videos all the time.
I use a Warrior G4 trapper glove to! Everytime I get into a game and I'm in warmups, this goes through my mind Everytime I catch a puck... *You, are Totally Awesome!* It's in my head since you say it every video. AND VOGoalie= Totally Awesome
I am currently wearing a custom Vaughn glove made for Daniel Manzato when he was with the Charlotte Checkers. It is based off a V3 and I have loved this glove since the first time I tried it on three or four years ago. I shoot in the Turco style and have done this for at least ten years or so with many different gloves with what has felt like many different breaks.
Traditional. I use a Brian’s pro Sub Zero 3 glove. I’m absolutely terrible at playing the puck. As a forward I naturally shoot right but as a goalie I catch left so I have to shoot left.
Hey Wayne!! Great topic! You should consider the stick you’re using too. I’m not familiar with the brand you’re using but if it’s a lower end foam core like a Passau, it won’t be giving you the proper balance, flex and consistent feel and can really change how, when or if you play the puck at all.
I have always used the Turco grip. For years I used a Reebok XLT, and I could shoot very well. I recently switched to a Factory MAD glove, but since I have, my puckhandling has been noticably bad. I wasn't sure for a while if this was just because I had been switching sticks lately, but now after seeing this it makes sense, because all the Factory MAD gloves are finger to thumb closures. Don't get me wrong, I love the glove, but it is so so hard to get used to a 60° angle
Great topic and vid Wayne!! I still have a CVS receipt long list of other things to work on before tackling this, but great info!! My new glove is a 75 degree, so I'm hoping it'll be the best of both worlds. Unfortunately not a removable palm tho :( It's the R/GT Pro.
Have you tryed not using your trapper glove but use your pad to leaver the stick. And flick the puck. I would use that to puck dump. You can get alot of power and height. But some times time wasting penalties. As it may go out of play or hit the roof.
I'm using an old Reebok Premier Pro V1 with overhand grip. I'm left handed but for some reason, I'm playing standard so I've never been able to shoot the puck using traditional grip. I'm also using a Price curve stick and it helps a lot to raise the puck.
wow I'm feelin this thread... My stick handling is terrible, as is my hockey IQ relating to when and where to play the puck.. only been at this for a year, so not gonna be too hard on myself...
I would mild my trapper (catching glove) so I could my stick just with the trapper. I could skate and shoot in drills. But I use the old heaten gloves. I haven played in years and never used the new style of gear. I shot traditional. And loved to come out and play the puck.
Primer 2.5 but I am think about upgrade to warrior G4 Set in couple months at source for sports in St.john's NL in Black and Teal with Gold, I go traditional and overhand.
When I was younger I used a Vaughn T 5500 (late 90s model) and was quite a good puck handler using traditional grip. After taking time off I came back and moved into a new CCM EFlex II 860 catcher. I don't know what break angles each one has, but I immediately became a poorer puck handler. I also have significantly more pop-outs with the EFlex. I'm a palm closer and the EFlex feels like more of a finger to thumb. I don't like it, and really want to find a glove that mimics that old 90s Vaughn feel.
Thanks for sharing! You're not alone in searching for that Old School feeling! I had a Vaughn Legacy T2000 glove and could shoot so much better with that! I think with gear evolving to be more protective as well as changes in size, goalies who played more than 20 years ago are old enough to remember how much mobility gear of that day had. Sure, we got stingers in our palms and on our arms, but that was just our way of "feeling" the puck to help with rebounds! But I also surmise that back then, gloves were constructed in a way to be more forgiving with the break in process, so you could kinda make it feel however you wanted. Today, everything is so hinged and rigid that there's no changing the feel.
Thanks for your Comment! Most gloves have built in palms, subsequently they have a permanent consistent "feel" to them. If you're looking a new gloves, your first priority is typically how it feels to close with your hand and/or how it feels in your glove's positioning in your stance. As a new goalie, it might take a little while for you to actually figure some of this out, so initially, just getting some gear and hitting the ice will help! Thanks for your comment and welcome to the crease!
I use a Vaughn V5 7460 Catching glove and I love it but I suck at playing the puck. I'm not blaming the glove but I don't know enough about the break of a glove to know whether or not something else would be better.
Totally! But I've been struggling with tracking pucks to my glove side for a while now, so I figured the compromise of better puck movement was a good trade off for me. Great point and thanks for bringing it up!
@@VOGoalie ok, I've found that I like the way my 590 feels, though it may not be the best for my style. Might get a g4 just to have the options of trying new breaks.
Honestly, I've always preferred a baseball glove type feel, but with the G4, the ability to have a different break angle is actually a really cool feature. I'll admit that I was initially skeptical as to how the liner could actually change the feel of the glove, but it really does seem like the G4 is designed to suit a variety of goalie preferences!
If you try to catch the puck with your eyes. You never will. My old goalie coach told me. Look at the shooters shoulders. And put your glove where you think the puck will be. Over time you just know where the puck is going and it becomes second nature. Try getting a tennis ball find a wall. Put tape a little bit of tape on the wall. You can't move out eyes off the tape. Learn to juggle the ball right hand to the tape to your left hand with out moving your eyes. If you get to doing it with your eyes closed move back or forward and start again. It's not a reflex drill. It's to help knowing where the ball/puck will end up. Even move the tape. But the time the ball leaves your sight you should known it's angle. You'll get more lucky saves. I never tracked the puck. I just get in its way.
I don't remember what glove I used when I played but I was coming from a baseball background so I know my glove was a 60 degree and I used the traditional grip. I was not great with the pick but I could elevated it when I needed to get it out of the zone around the boards.
Stand between the hashmarks and shoot pucks (wearing full gear) till you can put em in both top corners consistently. A it feels awesome once you can do it, and B it vastly improves clearing/passing.
Correct, due to the boot break, different pads can ride higher than others. I know that even within the ccm line up there are differences. Eflex is 34+2 while Premier are 35+1. Always good to try them on at a shop if its available.
Pad sizes are like shoe sizes, different manufacturers vary from each other. For example 33+3 Sher-Wood is the same as 36+1 Bauer. You should just go try them.
Sizing does vary some by manufactures these days. An ATK could easily "fit" in different sizes in different pad makes and models. But generally, if a manufacturer suggests a certain size based on your ATK, as long as you measured correctly, it should fit! Additionally, these days, most pads have some slight leeway with strapping adjustments to dial in the fit. Hope this helps!
I've never worried about the glove. I don't hold the stick I just lean on it glove open. I just played my first game back in 4 months since cv19 . Lost 10-6 lol only thing I didn't lose was playing the puck. A nice sauce pass from behind the net to past the red before hitting the ice.
Another great video man! I've been trying to find the 60 degree liner for my G4 since I got them many months ago but they are not in stock anywhere! Where did you get yours? Thanks for the help as always and look forward to more killer videos!
Never considered glove break before. In my experience, the single biggest influencer on my packhandling came from my stick. First, the paddle size, and secondly, the type. For me, there is no better stick than a Bauer (think S2 pro, ultrasonic, even the old vapor XXX). That said, I don't spend $200-300 on sticks anymore but if you have the money, do it. Just beware that they tend to not last as long
I’m a little different...I use a CCM Eflex II catcher with 600 break, and I shoot with my blocker at the butt end and my catcher supporting the handle/paddle on the top part of my hand rather than gripping with my palm. I have no idea why, but it always seemed like the easiest way to shoot for me....I’m also a Full-Right goalie!!!!
I couldn’t agree with you more!! I’ve tried the other ways...but this one fits be the best!! Keep up the great work and awesome videos!!! Liked and Subscribed!!!!
1x vapor, overhand. i'm not a fan of it really. i've had it for a couple years now and it doesn't feel like it ever really broke in so it's hard to grip the stick well. also the reason is because its not seamless like the g4 or gt2 gloves so it has restriction in the palm.
I used to be ok at shooting the puck. After finally changing out of my 10 year old Koho 580s, I struggled with my whole setup as everything felt like it was built differently. I got used to some gear but could never catch the puck cleanly again for a long time. So frustrating. I finally found a Kenesky glove I could catch with again but I suck at shooting the puck now. I havent been able to feel comfortable with the Turco grip so I still use a traditional. My struggles with catching the puck were so bad that I would rather not play the puck than give up how well I have been catching lately by going to yet another glove. Maybe some consistent practice shooting will help. Can you really work on goalie puck handling on dry land?
Thanks for your comment! I definitely think that off ice practice can be beneficial, but there's always the argument that if you're putting in "incorrect" reps, it will hurt more than help. That being said, just wearing my gloves with my stick, I can shoot pretty good off ice.... It's the addition of my CA, Pants and Pads that make everything so cumbersome these days! What C/A were you wearing with your older Koho gear? You're also right about things being constructed differently now. I think most of us righties are comfortable catching with our left hand because we played baseball at some point. And naturally, it feels more comfortable holding the stick with my right hand while in my stance. The trade off though, is shooting left did feel strange at first. But I got better at it as time went on. Also, in my humble opinion, I think having strong stick hand is more important for making saves with an active stick (while in our stance or down in butterfly). Especially since we really only stick handle a few times a game. But again, that's just the trade off I'm comfortable with.
@@bratprince11 I found greater comfort in blocking my 5 hole with the stick in my left hand... knowing if I needed to pass it or clear...I could slide it, grip it and fire the puck as I would as a winger or on defense. It just felt like home. LoL I know that's weird 😅

@@VOGoalie I'm a beer leaguer who plays 1, 2x a week so I don't get a ton of time to practice. Since playing the puck the way I mentioned above, it's actually improved. I get snappier passes and clears this way.
I’m not sure why you would want to change your entire catch glove experience (catching), just to be able to stick handle better? Find a glove that suits your playing style and catching comfort, then learn to stick handle with that. There are many ways to hold the stick in a ‘Turco grip’, most people think you need to have the stick running from the bottom crease in the glove, to the point of the T. That’s not the case.
Thanks for asking! I do, but TBH, I've been really bad at replying to DMs (seeing as for a period I didn't even realize I had any!) So if I missed yours, my apologies! Drop me another and I'll be sure to reply!
Definitely, stick material, size, curve all can contribute to one's stickhandling ability. I think it boils down to personal preference with regards to how a stick performs when making saves and when shooting and how important each is to any individual goalie. And catching felt surprisingly different, time will tell how quickly I adapt. Thanks for asking!

I'm also ambidextrous, played catcher :)
@@AnthonyTCarter I'm jealous. Wish I was ambidextrous. If you feel more comfortable holding your stick with your left hand, then I think you should definitely stick with Full Right. I find GoalieMonkey always has great deals on full right gloves and blockers. You should check em out online.
I use a Vaughn ve8 just got it at the end of the season and I can't even raise a beach ball Idk what to do it has a 90 degree angle I think when I close it I close it with my fingers
Sounds like you might need to break in the glove a little more. Hopefully that will help in both catching and shooting!
@@VOGoalie that's what I thought I've started to get a wider crease in the palm to form on the stick right now I'm sort of able to raise I just gave her a little elbow grease today and from what I've seen it should be working soon my buddy has the same one he bought a month before me and hes flinging puck far and wide
I stick handle with the glove under like a player
I wear a Bodam glove and block and I shoot with a turko grip
I wear a Bauer x900 catching gloves but it really sucks
I use a saros pro return ccm e flex 3 glove and I handle the puck well and I am fixing A Vaughn 2200 pro glove I got free and that might be my practice glove
Awesome! Sounds like some great gloves you got there! Thanks for sharing!
Great video, but really, I just wanted to hear you tell me that I'm Totally Awesome! Thanks for the motivation!
Ha! Thanks for your comment! You really are Totally Awesome!
I am wearing Vaughn 7250
My poor stick handling is effecting my stick handling. 😁
I have a 60° Passau and go overhand glove and push down a bit to get that flex and whip on my stick.
Ha, I hear you on the stickhandling front! Great point about flexing and whipping your stick. There's lots of different techniques for all occasions! I'm still at the "club the puck" phase!
@@VOGoalie I'm a beer leaguer who plays 1, 2x a week so I don't get a ton of time to practice. Since playing the puck the way I mentioned above, it's actually improved. I get snappier passes and clears this way.
I use over hand turco style
Wayne...... WE LOVE YOU
Aw, thanks man!
Traditional grip, very comfortable to me 🤷🏻♂️👍🏻
Ps - using Premier 590 angle
Awesome! Thanks for sharing as always!
My biggest problem is I shoot right normally but have to play regular in goal cause I catch left handed
I’m thinking of going to a 590 ccm game ready break
Sweet! You bring up a great point about how a Broken In glove can also make a difference!
Is that a 90 degree?
@VOGoalie do you check your Instagram Messages?
Thanks for asking! I do, but TBH, I've been really bad at replying to DMs (seeing as for a period I didn't even realize I had any!) So if I missed yours, my apologies! Drop me another and I'll be sure to reply!

Your a better stick handler than me. I'm still not sure how to do it properly. Just happy when I don't turn it over.
Warrior ritual gt glove with a 75 degree break
Nice! The best of both worlds!
VOGoalie do you think the stick has an impcat on stick handling and did switching breaks impact your catching
