    I think you should make a video on playing the puck for the other goalies that don’t know how to.

    • @VOGoalie

      Thanks for the suggestion! A stickhandling video is definitely on my list as well as the best situation to do so. But clearly, scooping the puck up on my blade will not be included in said video...

    The width of your butterfly should vary depending on your depth relative to the net; if you've telescoped out then your butterfly doesn't need to be as wide in order to take away the bottom of the net. Having a wider butterfly than necessary can result in pucks that would have otherwise missed being kicked out for an easy rebound.
    To work on your butterfly slides, focus on getting the knee of your drive leg up (your drive leg is the one you are pushing with). Raising your knee up towards your chest when you're down in the butterfly is what re-engages your blade against the ice, allowing you to push laterally.
    Additionally, placing the foot of your drive leg in front of your landed knee (the one still on the ice) will push you backwards as well as sideways; placing your foot of your drive leg behind your landed knee will push you forwards and sideways. The former can be used to slide back to your post without rotating your entire body beforehand, and the latter can be used if you need to cut down the angle on a shot but don't have time to regain your feet.

      Great points! Thanks for sharing! I touch on a lot of these points in my Butterfly Push video but it's great that you mention them here in the comments. It's funny to think that from a non-goalie perspective, "butterfly" seems relatively simple, but when you dig down deep into the nuances, it's really anything but. Thanks for your comment!

    Hi VOGoalie, I'm from the UK and I have just started playing in goal this year, I still play D but I have been covering for our usual goalie in our last few games. Good stuff as always. One of the other ways to get better at your butterfly... Go to pickup and practice! Most rinks let goalies play pick up for free. Practice makes perfect and Muscle memory is formed by repetition. Another great point about getting your butt up, I see a lot of beginner goalies really sit down after they start their butterfly.

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment! Great point about muscle memory! The butterfly motion is pretty unconventional from an anatomical standpoint, so your right, repetition helps build up that muscle memory. Thanks for the insight as always!

    Great stuff. A little additional for #1 Driving your knees to the ice. The mechanics are your Hips and Ankles as the pivot points. Start with a Wide stance, then bringing your knees together (hips) rotates the pads down to the ice (ankles), eventually disengaging the blades from the ice. Once you get good at this, you can literally SLAM your 5-hole closed.

    • @VOGoalie

  • @HotBranch

    Good stuff, as usual. Only suggestion I will make has to do with recovery from the butterfly: rather than use visual acuity to locate the puck by turning your head towards the puck's new location, have your shoulders follow as well. This has the advantage of turning your arms in the right direction and half your body is already turned in the right direction. Then, when you engage the recovery leg, half your body is already pointed in the right direction. You can extend the benefits of upper body rotation by swinging the non-recovery leg as well until that leg's skate makes contact with the recovery leg skate. At that point, you've done almost your entire rotation, and your recovery leg is used to get you up and push you out towards the puck.

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great points! That's always the ideal when it comes to efficiency of movement! Its funny how subtle adjustments and observations in a goalies game can lead to significant positive impact. You always have the best goalie insight! I think the biggest thing is developing discipline when it comes to movement. Often times for me at least, the easiest route is for athleticism (or lack thereof) to kick in and make a diving desperation save. What makes guys like Carey Price so good is how calm they look in those "desperation" moments. As always, thanks so much for you comment and contributing to the conversation!

    My issue was both my hamstrings and adductors were locked up and it took dry needling with Electro stimulation to unlock them.
    Could butterfly just fine without even stretching it was amazing.
    I was an idiot and force myself into a wall sit stretch that was too wide.

    • @magictooth2
      @magictooth2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      stretching is key! If you're stiff/locked up nothing will work as it should.. Just like you say, always play better after recent chiropractice, when everything is aligned and moving the way it should, without some parts of my body obstructing movement. It's a game changer, especially in Beer-league

    • @KB9813
      @KB9813 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KB9813 can you pls help me...I cant do wide butterfly and when i try it hurts my glute like I am getting a cramp.even when I try side lifting my leg up i get cramp in glute(standing on both feet and just rising your leg up sideways)

    • @KB9813
      @KB9813 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@I_TalkSick I'm not a medical professional so I have no idea. But, glutes are mainly a stabilizing muscle and it's advisable to try and maybe stretch them to help with rotation. It could be hip impingement (th-cam.com/video/agmYorhOxmc/w-d-xo.html | th-cam.com/video/Pd_bJMOM0I0/w-d-xo.html).
      I would figure it would be either your abductors or adductors. Your adductors are completely abused by goalie stance and the inward movement of c-cuts, abductors outward movement of c-cuts.
      See a physiotherapist and maybe ask for dry needling with estimulation. Might not work for you, but since I had a muscle injury it worked for me.

    Thanks for making these videos, they are awesome! I have only played ice a few times now and I can't do a butterfly. I've only ever played roller hockey and there isn't too much sliding for a goalie. I also wonder if it's my pads, they are 2000-2001 don simmons excalibur pads and i don't think butterfly was a thing then. I do have some warrior g3 pads on order and i'm hoping it makes a difference. Your opinions, insight, techniques, help, is greatly appreciated.

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for your comment! Modern day pads will make a difference in your butterfly so the switch to G3s from those Excaliburs will be like night and day (plus the weight savings will be incredible!). There for sure will be an adjustment period, but stick with it and you'll be butterflying in no time!

When I went down, I kept landing on the actual front of the pad, I just could not get it set up right. And when I forced myself into the position with the fronts out, I couldn't do pushes, the pad was in the way of my skate. Are they just too big? Is it hip rotation issues?

    Thank you for this! I’m a field hockey goalie transitioning to ice. We don’t really use butterfly in field hockey (it’s too hard to get up from dirt) and we can’t catch the ball plus we have a smaller stick and wider goal. It can be really hard! We kick the ball away or smack it with a hand blocker (on the glove hand). So I’m excited at the prospect of using the butterfly, having an actual glove to catch, and a smaller goal. I guess it’s about perspective. Question: I spent ten years as a gymnast. Do you think my flexibility and reflexes will be helpful?

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for your comment and welcome to the sport! I knew a field hockey goalie... (a long, long time ago...) so I'm familiar with the position. While your flexibility as a gymnast won't ever hurt you as a hockey goalie, the skills you learned with regards to angles and reading plays in field hockey will probably help you more! While there are different nuances between the sports, the basic premise (and mental mindset) will help you adjust to the game much more quickly. Good luck and thanks for your comment!

    Tip for beginners working on speed: if you have another more experienced goalie to help you, stand in front of each other and "race" them for going into your butterfly, recovery sliding, etc... Make sure you're doing it safely and correctly, though; you don't want to hurt yourself.

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like he might need to loosen up the strapping for better rotation. It could also be his toe attachment depending on what pads he's using. Biomechanically, he might need slightly more flare in the butterfly and/or ankle rotation (ie when dropping to his knees, he should try to have his skate blades be more parallel to the ice as opposed to them being perpendicular.). Hope this helps!

      Thanks for asking! You'll really know with how easy it is to recover. If you're sitting back when in your butterfly, your body weight will be closer to your ankles. From there, there is almost no way to get a leg up and recover. When you keep your backside up, your weight is on your knees and you should be able to feel the difference in stability. Hope this helps and thanks for you comments!

    Standup, standup, standup. Watch the NHL goalies, they get beat up high all the time, because your a small target. Crouch, play from the crouch position and stand up at times your a bigger target, half your saves are pucks hitting you. Play your angles, Move side to side in your skates, not on your pads, your leaving the corners open. Watch the old goalies on TH-cam and watch them over and over again. Only two goalies were great using the butterfly, Glenn Hall and Tony Esposito.

    As for gear mods to help with butterfly.
    You have G4 pads so its already built in. But, for beginners am doubtful they have 700 to $2,000 pads.
    Most helpful has been shock cord toe ties of some type. There is a various variations up there but my acquaintance makes his own. Calls them Pak1 via 5-hole hockey in Facebook. Also prolace has there own, monster is in the shitter (sucks. Liked there TGL's), kenesky hockey etc. And also a professor strap! (Also from 5-Hole) Dude they are awesome for letting you keep your pads stupid loose but keep your knee from popping sideways off the stack. For the person who doesn't have Warrior pads it's super useful. I legitimately was able to skate with my strap set to one hole on my Reebok P4's.

    When I was beginning to learn the butterfly when I went down my arms would puff out leaving a gap underneath my them so what I did to to stop that was put my stick on my wrists so it was getting caught on my glove and practiced butterfly like that so my gloves stayed in the same spot

    Tip 3 is really gonna help me. Once in a game, it was a 1-1 tie against the best team in our division. I made a save and the puck went into the corner. Then, their guy passed it to the slot, and another guy took a one timer, and it went right through my 6-hole. Now I know that if I use tip 3, those pucks won’t get past me. Thanks Man!

    If you’re a youth goalie or a parent with one, PLEASE READ THIS..
    I was a youth goalie, for years. I started out strong, was good, best around in my age group. When going from age 14 to 15 i got a new coach, one who thought HE knew best how goalies should play. He forced me to start staying upright more, and told me not to drop down unless i HAD to. It completely ruined my game, i never played high-school hockey, and i was never good again because i wasnt playing naturally.. Please, PLEASE if you see a coach making a kid change his style because he thinks he knows best, please stop it IMMEDIATELY. It killed me that i never got to have fun playing goalie again, and never moved on.. Note: This only goes for kids who have been playing the position for years and developed their own style. If they’re a brand new goalie, never played, then a bit of direction is good. But more than anything, the direction SHOULD be, “do whatever comes naturally to stop the puck” cause its different for every kid.
    Please learn from my mistake of letting that coach ruin hockey for me...

    I’m trying to be a goalie! Got some equipment but when I put it all on, not good. Can’t see down, can’t move. It’s like I’m wearing a suit of armor. I’ve played hockey for years as a forward. This is crazy! Any advice? I really want to do this.

      @VOGoalie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Vlad, thanks for your question. Powerslide is right, I wear a Protechsport mask. Specifically a Luongo mold. I actually have an extended chin but the cage window is large so it looks like a short chin (I used to wear a Mage RS, now that was a short chin!). If you're looking for a Protechsport, plan early as the lead time can often be lengthy as they are all made to order, but Michel is fantastic to work with in making your mask!
