The only video i found to explain the mess that is a 1976 wiring thank you.. id love a video of you putting a stock 1976 Yamaha headlight wiring all together and where each wire goes because i have my grandfathers and im trying to get it running after along time sitting, thats the only thing that has me stumped. this would mean the world to me thank you.
Thanks. All my bikes have had varying levels of deterioration with either connectors or wiring jackets, many of them blistered with amperage overloads. Appreciate all the helpful hints. Best wishes.
I redo all my wiring too. Was easy. The only bad thing that I totally forget is use the standard colors wires. I use full copper wires That I have left but not the same factory colors.
I’ll be starting soon on replacing my left and right control switches on my 1976 XS650C. Currently on the originals the left control the directionals are not functioning (pinched wire in harness) and the hi-lo switch is broke. On the right control the emergency kill switch is fused solid and non functioning ( which I never used anyway). Im going to take this project step by step and try my best to document the wiring. Im the original owner of my XS650C. I do have a PMA kit and electronic ignition upgrade installed.
If you can the same wire color of bike it may my it but easier. I've bought old wiring harness on eBay so I could have enough wire for the project. Good luck with your project and thanks for watching.
Excellent video! I’m a bit confused on the battery-less set up. I have an 83 xs which I believe has CDI digital ignition. Do you know what I would need to convert the system to a capacitor vs battery? From what I can tell, it seems the easiest route it to run a more concealable gel battery.
In order to run a battery less system you need a PMA (permanent magnet alternator) you buy one online like eBay, Huge hand built , Mike's xs or TC brothers . The stock system needs a battery to operate. Capacitors work fine but not so much for head light works better if you switch all lights to Leads. Hope that helps. Miyagi
Awesome- i had to replace coil due to a blue plug wire 81 has 1 coil 2 plug wires glued in new coil towers required cutting off layers of accel 8 mm to jam down narrow diamater tower wells same thing on boot end . Does orange wire on Primary - or+ red/white +or- ? Turn signal to 2 into 1 ground above rear fender i have 2 , 2 into 1 pigtails in black plastic bag on top of fender where loom exits body on left side to emerge from hole into black bag one 2 into1 could be 81 had seperate tail and licence light, and i had replaced it with earlier model taillight/licence combo and rear fender both 2 into 1 pigtails were empty because i never did the wires or bulbs so i could keep riding witch pigtail should i use both were empty and blackwires.
Ok if I think what you are asking is the red/white is power or + of the coil and orange would be the ignition side or - side of coil . Turn signal right side is dark green with a black ground to the frame or wiring pigtail now left side is a coco brown wire and black wire to ground on frame or to pigtail. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching
In the process of restoring a 79 XS650 special. I couldn't get the bike to turn on. Good battery, checked the main grounds, checked all the plugs. I was stumped, (this is my 3rd XS). Took it in to a local shop that works on old jap bikes. What I failed to notice even though it was staring me in the face was the previous owner installed painted handlebars and the controls were not grounded, duh. So after some time with a dremel, sand paper and file. It lights up.
Man , have I been there! Working on other people's bike you just never know what the hell they did. 99% of electrical problems is the ground , I'm glad you found the problem. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
Hey I am rewiring my 77 xs 650 with a simplified system I want to just run headlight hi/lo, aftermarket tach/speedo, tail/brake light, fuse block, I have Mike's xs pma/cdi, do I need to keep the safety relay?
Hello, I recently had a Boyer ignition system installed. After the installation I noticed that the kill switch no longer works. The mechanics said that the kill switch had some custom setup with the old ignition system. What i would like to know is, what would be the easiest way to reconnect the kill switch? I have some electrical experience. Cheers
I'm not sure what your mechanic is talking about The kill switch just breaks the power from the battery to the ignition are you sure this guy knows what he's doing?
@@outlaw86custom no i can't be sure, but he said that to rewire the kill switch would have added more time, and you never know how long it'll take till your in there. I get the feeling the electrical side of the job is least like and can get very costly for the customer.
Michael something screw you there because the power comes from the ignition switch through the kill switch to the coils and and ignition system. It should be a simple process of hooking in the Boyer ignition system I don't get it.
@@outlaw86custom i don't get it either. I need the kill switch because the key is all the way back behind my knee. I'll have to try to connect it myself. The ignition fried itself soon after i wired in new indicators and brake light. There was an old wire running to the frame (earth i assume). All the lights worked without the old earth. I took it for one ride then the ignition fizzled. Just today on a test ride, the fuse for the indicators died. Do you think these electrical issues would likely be from having no earth?
hi, firstly thank you for your informative youtube videos. if you can try and help an electrical simpleton i would be very grateful for any help my headlight wiring is pretty stock but i can’t work out which wires feed the front and rear indicators from the headlamp any sort of simplified explanation of wires to indicators would be great. thanks in advance David from newmarket suffolk england.

I'd love to do a video for you but I don't have any stock wiring setups on the xs650 that I have but I'll keep searching
@@outlaw86custom you are a saint, thank you so much, even better would be taking a scrap harnes and plugging it together or on paper.

It depends on which regulator you are using and points are wired from the ignition switch. Thanks for watching.

How do you wire in the modern reg/rec to the old magneto
What type of magneto
@@outlaw86custom whatever was stock on a 1977
On your diagram what is the box above battery that appears to say.. red cluster?
It's not a box it's where red power lines meet.

Just wire your items to fuse box you should be fine.

Are you going to hardtail the bike?
Well at the moment I don't have anything to hardtail but I'll see what I can come up with.

The red/white wire should be coming from the flasher unit which is power by the brown wire...
