One of my fondest memories was renting this for several weekends in a row when I was in middle school in the 90's and doing nothing but playing my Nintendo on my tiny little TV in my room all weekend until I beat it. I remember at one point that I bought a giant sub sandwich from Walmart and survived off cuts of it so I wouldn't have to waste time making myself food. The game actually still had its manual when I rented it which was thick like a book and contained a full walkthrough. Thems was good times, man, my first experience with a game so addictive and engrossing that the real world faded away. It's rare to find a game good enough to do that. I had such high hopes in the late 90's. MMORPGs were so good and getting better--ultima online, then everquest. I thought that, within a few more years, games would get so good that I could be engrossed like that all the time, whenever I wanted. It didn't work out, though. MMO's are hardly made now. Blizzard, which could be depended on for guaranteed amazing games, fell totally into decay. Even the newer jrpgs just somehow lost their magic. I find myself going back and playing the old games, the dragon warriors, the ultimate online free shards, classic EverQuest. What could have been, wasn't. The gaming singularity never came to pass. The good games are still the old ones. They persist like ghosts in strange corners of the internet.
Woeking my way through dragon quest 2, and then gonna do 3. Its the 16 bit remakes. I rented both 2 and 3 back in ..1990? Ish. They left the rental atore soon after so aside from 1, i havent really played the series. I am changing that :)
@rpg_haven I agree :) my plan is do the forst three, then buy the HD remake of 3. Hopefully, if I take my time, the remakes of 1 and 2 will drop. Then I goto 4, and beyond :)
I never got into DQ3 so much until playing the GBC version and doing a solo run, no exp to share so you leveled up much faster. The HD-2D version is really going to be fantastic from what we've been shown and i got to try out Octopath Traveler 2 which makes me want to finish the first and is making me eager for more info on the upcoming HD-2D version of DQ3. I've taken to try some role playing and making characters from other games in the series as party members for DQ3 on Switch, similar to how i have done that in DQIX on the DS which really needs a release on a newer system.
I remember when I first played DQ3. It was only a few years ago, but I love that game to this day. I can't wait for the hd 2d remake so I can replay it in a new way!
Years ago Square announced a new remake in the "HD-2D" style they used for Octopath and Live a Live. It's still not out yet. The version I'm playing in the video is a Switch port of the mobile remake.
I was born in 1984, yet I only first played this game about 5 years ago. It was the NES version I played first, and I now think it is one of the greatest games of all time.
I played the whole series in order as well after starting off with 11 and pausing it because I wanted to really experience Tickington. 4 is my favorite for how it is structured and is an amazing throwback to its 3 predecessors. I hope you enjoy your time with it!
I got into Dragon Quest from 11, but I’m going through the 1-3 HD remakes on the Switch. While I really liked 1 and 2, 3 was simply excellent. Even now in 2023, I think it’s a great game. I can only imagine how amazing people felt when it was first released if I’m this impressed even now. The story was great, gameplay good, superb music, and MANY quality of life improvements over the first 2. I REALLY enjoyed how it made everything connect to the first two games, as well. Playing the the Erdrick trilogy was a ton of fun, and 3 really was a fantastic way to end it. 9.5/10 in my book. I can’t wait to go through DQ4 and also for the HD remake for 3! Thanks for the nice video and insightful commentary! :)
I just started a hard type rom hack for dragon warrior 3 (figured that was the equivalent of going draconic mode for a challenge) So far it's probably the deepest NES RPG I've played. I love it too.
I’m a new jrpg fan. I played only a few over the years but 2024 was the year that made me a hardcore jrpg fan. I loved the video. I played dq11 a few years ago and rented dq8 from blockbuster as a kid but didn’t get far because it was only a rental. I recently bought every dq game except for 7, which i will buy as soon as i find a copy since i cant find it digitally. Planning on playing them in release order. I’m currently playing metaphor ReFantazio in my living room but at night im worked on the switch dq 1-3 trilogy. I have the 4-6 trilogy on my phone since the DS copies are $100-$200 each. Not super fond of playing it that way but oh well. Im going to try and beat dq 1-3 before fhe hd2d remake comes out in a month. Or at least make it part of the way through 3 before i play the remake. Earlier this year I played through trails in the sky fc - planning on doing that whole series over the course of a few years since theres like 12 games lol. A few jrpgs i played in the past and liked were Ff12, persona 3-5, ni no kuni 1&2, dark cloud 1&2, rogue galaxy, octopath traveler 1&2, and fire emblem 3 houses, and the snes version of secret of mana. This year i got back into dragon quest, the trails series, unicorn overlord (wow what a game!), triangle strategy, visions of mana, and metaphor. I think im changing my favorite subgenre of games from crpgs like divinity, pillars of eternity, baldurs gate, icewind dale, disco Elysium, shadow run, pathfinder etc etc to jrpgs. Idk why i made the switch from the super complex number crunching crpgs to the more simple (and i dont mean that in a bad way, its just the truth) jrpgs but something a out them has just made me enjoy games in a way i havent since i was a kid or teenager.
Awesome to see someone getting into the genre in a big way! If you ever do want more complex mechanics, try Romancing SaGa 2. There's a remake coming out soon that looks pretty good
I really like the way you review a games bro, i think your video will perform better if you change your thumbnail, maybe like the masked man yt channel, simple but it pique my curiosity
3 was the first Dragon Quest I ever played. It was on the Game Boy Color. I died so many times on the first continent alone and couldn't revive my part members because I lacked money. I restarted so many times. I never beat it. The first Dragon Quest I ever beat was Dragon Quest Monsters 2 Tara's Adventure. On the Game Boy Color. The second I ever beat was Dragon Quest 9. I played 8 on the 3DS but never beat it. I just kinda abandoned it. I finally played 1 and 2 on the Switch and beat them and am working my way through 3 on the Switch. I am also doing 11 and have just gotten four and five for the DS and have ordered Six and 7 for the Ds 3ds respectively. I intend to beat them this time. I also have Dragon Quest Monsters Dark Prince and am working my way through it.
Watching this video I assumed you were a much bigger content creator based on the quality, then I go to see you have less than 250 subs??!! Well at least I'm here before you blow up lmao
I played a different game with the same battle system as a kid but forgot the name. You fought using monsters, leveled them up and fused them into new ones 😅
DG3 became one of my favorite games of all time after just one play though. I hope the game gets more recognition here in the west once the HD 2D remake comes out. Also hell yeah duck duck go.
I played this on release back in the day. I loved dragon warrior. I got into it from the free game from nintendo power when i was like 5. Still feels weird calling it dragon quest lol.
This video is 3 years old. How is it talking about and showing HD2D Remake stuff? The game doesn't come out for months and I just heard about it?! Love the video though. I enjoy your voice and inflection and you have great enthusiasm. Subbing to watch older vids and check out new ones
I'm finishing the gbc version with an emulator, I'm surprised of how difficult I've found this game haha, I'm used to play final fantasy, I've completed 7 of those. Even ones like 2, and other jrpgs, but this game seemed really difficult to know what to do to advance, I got stuck in many parts, specially when i had to find the final key in the middle of the ocean, I didn't found the soo town until very late. I've had to use guides to advance in parts like that, the ocean felt like a chore to navigate it at first, with random encounters and all that. I think is a great game, yes, I'm just disappointed that I've got stuck so many times hahah, well it's still enjoyable. I will play other dragon quest after i finish this.
DWIII was one of my most played games back on the NES; granted, several of the top games (for me) were RPGs, but DWIII might've held the top spot. (I mean, could only replay FFI so many times; with DW/DQ, you had four choices, and DWIV, for as good as it was, did feel like it didn't get REALLY started until the fifth chapter.)
I just gave up on this game after getting to around 1/3. The grinding is killing me. I feel like 90% of the time is spent on fights I don't want to fight. There are sequences where every 2 or 3 tiles there's an encounter and I just can't have fun anymore. Specially after reading the final boss requires insane hours of more grinding. Went for 3 after finishing 1 hoping they improved on this aspect, but somehow they made it worst! Have massive respect for what they acomplished historicaly, but I guess it's not the game for me right now. I'm still hoping to try 4, 5 and 8 on mobile, and finally 11 on pc. Fingers cross it gets better 🤞
It's pretty old-school and barebones for sure. Sounds like you'll probably enjoy 4 and 5 more since they offer more variety. 4 switches up characters a lot, and 5 lets you capture and use monsters. They also give you more to explore and do and aren't as grindy. Still pretty grindy, though.
Yes and no. Class customization is arguably the strongest point of this game, giving players a degree of class control that even future Dragon Quests couldn't match. Stylistically, Dragon Quest III is also a contender. At the same time, the in-game lore is a product of its time limited by only what the NES was able to contain (future Dragon Quest games excel on the front of narrative). I also was largely underwhelmed by the lack of difficulty / challenge compared to every other entry I've played through. The end-boss lack of a second phase makes the fight feel unearned, especially compared to the work needed for the first two games. Definitely appreciate the question and perspective, always love me some good Dragon Quest content :)
Half the classes phase out (thief, merchant, mage, martial artist), the sage is just a slower version of a mage that became a priest, and now modern games have more variety with all classses having skills. The Mobile and switch game took out pachisi and you don’t have fast forward auto battle and ff pixel remaster animations. Gadabout is a fun challenge (high luck may be set up to martial artist or merchant big money dig and then sage) and I miss the bunny girl lol. Personality is busted. Just make sexy/vamp chicks for stat growth exploits; no idea how women don’t say this is a girl power game.
um no thefts where always there no wrong the merchant can use a ability called call to randomly summon a blacksmith or inn or a general store anywhere on the map does not work in dungeons if i remember right if you have enough mp you can just spam call till you get the inn and grind endlessly in the strongest spot in the game without ever leaving besides to save making it one of the most useful classes in the game i used this to grind in the cave right before the end game you know the one that is surrounded by poison i would grind near the steps go up to the world map and spam cal till i got a inn or i guess general store and buy medical herbs lol
Man, you got 2 Books of Satori? That's insanely lucky Maybe the remakes lower the drop rate, but in the original game they were a 1 in 1000 drop from a certain enemy, iirc Anyways, nice video, enjoyed )
Well I prefer having 3x Sage users well before you get the 2nd book but I prefer not using those books at all on the remakes the said blue beak enemy I believe never drops it.
You're gonna love the 4th, if you haven't played it, and if you did, i'm sure you did love it. the 5th, has time travel. One of my top subjects in any game or story. But the 3rd still ranks as my best DQ game. I recommend you the 8th, as (SPOILER) Empyrea appeared in another DQ under a different name. Take a guess.
It's funny. The hero character in this game is referred to as the "legendary hero" in the first game. What about the companions of this legendary hero? They contributed too
I can only agree with all the praise it gets - in general and in this video. I had no idea the game sold a million units on release day. Nuts! When I played this, I started out with a Gadabout and turning him into a Merchant. I thought the high luck stat would grant me cash that way. That strat really didn't pay off, and I wasted the Gadabout's advantage of being able to turn into a Sage. Oh well. Hope you'll enjoy the next Dragon Quest titles, personally I love IV through VI the most.
I hate the "personality" system. The Hero's personality seems to change several times during the game without even telling you, and in-game there's no way to know what the different personalities even do, so you can't predict what your stat changes will be. I haven't played the Switch/Mobile one though, just the SNES remake, so it's possibly different. I liked the NES original the best, though.
People with your accent exist? People speak like this day to day unironically? Or is it just for the YT persona? Differentiation? If legitimate, its quite charming/endearing.

It was fun reading this. Those were the days
I love that this game is also available on Mon as well. Still want to play the NES version at some point in my life.
Woeking my way through dragon quest 2, and then gonna do 3. Its the 16 bit remakes. I rented both 2 and 3 back in ..1990? Ish. They left the rental atore soon after so aside from 1, i havent really played the series. I am changing that :)
Nice! I'm playing them in order too, it's fun
@rpg_haven I agree :) my plan is do the forst three, then buy the HD remake of 3. Hopefully, if I take my time, the remakes of 1 and 2 will drop. Then I goto 4, and beyond :)
Immediate subscribe. Great video, I dunno just like your style. Playing this for the first time and I’m shocked by how much I love it, you nailed it
Thanks for watching!
All of the DQ games deserve more love than they get... Thankfully it seems like it's been improving for the west in recent years.
Great video! I've gotta go play this!
What is the name of the bird you used to fly in the overworld? Is it in the NES version?
That's Ramia, and yes I believe she is
I never got into DQ3 so much until playing the GBC version and doing a solo run, no exp to share so you leveled up much faster.
Same here man!
What is this HD remake?? Is this available?
Years ago Square announced a new remake in the "HD-2D" style they used for Octopath and Live a Live. It's still not out yet.
The version I'm playing in the video is a Switch port of the mobile remake.
This is my all time favorite game. Nuff Said.
Wow this was well detailed video
Bro is this fucking Hank Hill?! This is fucking awesome
Hahah, I sell propane and propane accessories if you're interested
I was born in 1984, yet I only first played this game about 5 years ago. It was the NES version I played first, and I now think it is one of the greatest games of all time.
The First HELLO Game.
I love this game and I love your soothing voice
The best prequel I have ever played.
I had 1-4 liked them all.
I played the whole series in order as well after starting off with 11 and pausing it because I wanted to really experience Tickington. 4 is my favorite for how it is structured and is an amazing throwback to its 3 predecessors. I hope you enjoy your time with it!
Thank you, I recently finished it. I plan to do a video on it, but not super soon.
It's as old as I am. Amazing series.
I've played through 6 of the first 9 DQ games recently and I gotta say the people in Japan are on to something because 3 is my favorite so far.
Promising channel!!
I just started a hard type rom hack for dragon warrior 3 (figured that was the equivalent of going draconic mode for a challenge)
So far it's probably the deepest NES RPG I've played.
A few jrpgs i played in the past and liked were
Ff12, persona 3-5, ni no kuni 1&2, dark cloud 1&2, rogue galaxy, octopath traveler 1&2, and fire emblem 3 houses, and the snes version of secret of mana.
There's a remake coming out soon that looks pretty good
i played 3 on the gba a lot back in the day, loved it
any type a in here?
My personal favorite was DWIV, Chapters of the Chosen. I hope to get a similar hd 2d remake of that as well...
That would be awesome. I love the 4th game too
I really like the way you review a games bro, i think your video will perform better if you change your thumbnail, maybe like the masked man yt channel, simple but it pique my curiosity
Thanks, I struggle with thumbnails for sure. I'll check out his channel for some inspiration.
I just suscribed, greetings from México
Thank you, and hello neighbor
I will try the NES version first, but hearing about DQ3 having "less grinding" is a relief 🙏🙏
This game is so good that this the only jrpg game that I played twice back in the day.
You're a man of good taste. Nice Romancing Saga 3 cover btw
DQ3 belongs in the top 10 JRPGs, imo.
Watching this video I assumed you were a much bigger content creator based on the quality, then I go to see you have less than 250 subs??!! Well at least I'm here before you blow up lmao
Hahah, welcome!
I played a different game with the same battle system as a kid but forgot the name. You fought using monsters, leveled them up and fused them into new ones 😅
Jade Cocoon? Monster Rancher?
Amazing review! subscribed
DG3 became one of my favorite games of all time after just one play though. I hope the game gets more recognition here in the west once the HD 2D remake comes out. Also hell yeah duck duck go.
Naming the character after Octopath Traveler's characters, clever XD
DQIII is one of my favorite games! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it. Glad you enjoyed it
I played this on release back in the day. I loved dragon warrior. I got into it from the free game from nintendo power when i was like 5. Still feels weird calling it dragon quest lol.
any type b in here?
Not in this version ;]
This video is 3 years old. How is it talking about and showing HD2D Remake stuff? The game doesn't come out for months and I just heard about it?!
Love the video though. I enjoy your voice and inflection and you have great enthusiasm. Subbing to watch older vids and check out new ones
Thank you, I hope you enjoy. The remake was announced over 3 years ago if you can believe it
I personally prefer 4 of the nes DQ games. But 3 is very good.
Embarrassed but it took me 2 years to finish the game. Had to use walkthrough 1 to 2 times for help but this game was awesome!
The second world had me hyped. This really inspired my favorite Gen 2 in pokemon
Yes, it does, next question please.
Cant wait to play the new switch remake
Hell yeah I can't wait to play the new remake too. The best part of this game was challenging yourself to go solo like your father Ortega
I like the Japanese version especially when you reach the Dali Lama's temple.
It's so HARD! AAAAAAAAAA
The mobile version seems to be based on the Super Famicom remake rather than the game boy color version. It lacks animated enemies, though
It lacks the animated enemies and some more sprites the SFC version had.
um no thefts where always there no wrong the merchant can use a ability called call to randomly summon a blacksmith or inn or a general store anywhere on the map does not work in dungeons if i remember right if you have enough mp you can just spam call till you get the inn and grind endlessly in the strongest spot in the game without ever leaving besides to save making it one of the most useful classes in the game i used this to grind in the cave right before the end game you know the one that is surrounded by poison i would grind near the steps go up to the world map and spam cal till i got a inn or i guess general store and buy medical herbs lol
What is the job of Primrose at 14.10? Her appearance does not look like a sage.
She's a sage wearing a blessed bikini, which changes her appearance.
I'm glad to see they ranked FF4 above 6. I never understood why everyone always cheer about 6 when 4 & 5 were just so much better
FF6 is objectively supperior to any FF out there.
I adore this series I started with 3 on Gbc. It's as good or better than Pokémon.
Just finished 2D-HD, i did not play the original, loved the game
Man, you got 2 Books of Satori?
That's insanely lucky
Maybe the remakes lower the drop rate, but in the original game they were a 1 in 1000 drop from a certain enemy, iirc
Anyways, nice video, enjoyed )
In the remakes there's an extra one in Rimuldar :)
@@rpg_haven Ooooh that's nice
Though i do kinda question this choice, considering how OP the sage is
Well I prefer having 3x Sage users well before you get the 2nd book but I prefer not using those books at all on the remakes the said blue beak enemy I believe never drops it.
A PRIEST AND A MAGE TOGETHER .
Even in it's mobile form, this game is really good, I am lost in it tho, I won't search for a guide either.
I sure did. Working on a video for IV but it's gonna be awhile. Already played V too and am now on VI!
@@rpg_haven enjoy the sixth. I haven't played it.
@@TonyStarkCLCDon't forget 11.
It's funny. The hero character in this game is referred to as the "legendary hero" in the first game. What about the companions of this legendary hero? They contributed too
Hahah true
i loved this game
I can only agree with all the praise it gets - in general and in this video.
I had no idea the game sold a million units on release day. Nuts!
When I played this, I started out with a Gadabout and turning him into a Merchant. I thought the high luck stat would grant me cash that way. That strat really didn't pay off, and I wasted the Gadabout's advantage of being able to turn into a Sage. Oh well.
Hope you'll enjoy the next Dragon Quest titles, personally I love IV through VI the most.
I wish the remakes didn't change the spell names. Or monster names. I hate when remakes do that
I still play it on my switch lol.
Martial artist, AKA Monk
Yes
Fuck this final boss. Too tough for my lvl 58s presently, holy shit lol.
