Anyone who have loved and lost can identify with this song. "And the dawn don't rescue me", always gets me. You get up in the morning and think things will be better, and then you realize it is not.
Genius. Masterful. Brilliant. Flawless. A perfect live performance of one of the greatest love songs of all time. If you’ve ever loved and lost and not moved to tears by this stunningly beautiful song, there’s definitely something wrong.
Your description of The Band's music was perfect. These guys move you so much because there is nothing phony, cheap, or slick. They are utterly authentic. Loved your reaction.
Eric Clapton was so undone by their sound, he went to Woodstock to ask them if he could join The Band. Their first two albums were like a bomb went off in music. People just felt it on a cellular level. Both utterly familiar and unkike anything else they had ever heard.
Thank you both for your lovely reaction! It is ok to be speechless - there are so many emotions wrapped up in this performance. Heart-achingly beautiful and raw.
A sax solo for the ages compliments of Garth Hudson, a true unsung musical genius. Thid music was from a time when songs touched your heart. The music of this time was so important in our lives.
this absolutely magnificent song was - and will always be - the perfect representation of the destruction wrought by a failed relationship; my marriage ended in 1998 after 16 years and, as Andre eluded and Rick sang, the pain will never go away... heartbroken just skims the surface of the pain I've embraced and have chosen to live with. your reactions are pure and spoken as two who understand. bless your love for each other.... never lose it.
Sublime. I urge you to watch " The Last Waltz ". The Band's farewell tour with lots of amazing guests and interesting anecdotes too. Have a bottle of nice wine and two glasses at the ready as you watch it, folks.
This song for me was the highlight of Rick Danko's long illustrious singing career .There were many ,many others ,but this was exceptional . It was only a matter of time until you guys covered this rendition on your superb channel ...please keep 'em coming ..best wishes from Scotland .
"I wish it never ended". This is a short version. Check out the studio version. Love the lyrics! It makes no difference where I turn I can't get over you and the flame still burns It makes no difference, night or day The shadow never seems to fade away And the sun don't shine anymore And the rains fall down on my door Now there's no love As true as the love That dies untold But the clouds never hung so low before It makes no difference how far I go Like a scar, the hurt will always show And it makes no difference who I meet They're just a face in the crowd on a dead-end street And the sun don't shine anymore And the rains fall down on my door These old love letters Well, I just can't keep Just like the gambler says: "Read 'em and weep" And the dawn don't rescue me no more Without your love, I'm nothing at all Like an empty hall, it's a lonely fall Since you've gone it's a losing battle Stampeding cattle, they rattle the walls And the sun don't shine anymore And the rains fall down on my door Well, I love you so much That it's all that I can do Just to keep myself from telling you That I never felt so alone before
I heard this when I was apart from my love for too long and it broke me. The line, 'The dawn don't rescue me no more' really hits me, too. When I was in depressive episodes, I usually had momentary reprieves from the depths in the morning. I knew I was deep into the black when even the morning didn't 'rescue' me.
Robbie wrote this song with Rick in mind, felt he could sing it without it coming off as self pity. He was of course right. Rattle the waaaall, Rick knew how to draw it out. The line "and the dawn don't rescue me" rings so true. You get up in the morning and hope things will be better, and you realize it is not getting better. Anyone who have loved and lost will identify with this song, even if you were the one who broke it off, which was my case, I was still very much in love, but felt the relationship had stalled. I figured if he cared he would come back, which he did, but by then I had met my ex husband, and didn't want to go back. He was the love of my life and we stayed in contact over the years until he passed away about 6 years ago.
This is another of the many great performances on the iconic Martin Scorsese film "The Last Waltz"! It is one of, if not the greatest, preservations of the final concert performance of any band in Rock history. This concert - "The Last Waltz" - captured forever the final performances of "The Band", as well as all the amazing performances of the most recognizable and influential musical artists of their time who, enthusiastically attended and performed amazingly in this "one-of-a-kind" concert. During this concert, "The Band" performed many of their iconic hit songs at their absolute best. Added to that, each and every one of their guests did the same - gave truly inspired performances - delivering a truly memorable and spectacular experience!
Maybe The Tragically Hip’s last concert broadcast nationally on the CBC when after the lead singer was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer would be only other band I can think of. Both Canadian bands!
The Band had three vocalists... Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel. So far you’ve heard Levon and Rick. Next I recommend reviewing a song by Richard from The Last Waltz. "The Shape I’m In" is a good one!!!
Lots of great moments in this film. Think my favorite songs from it are their cover of Marvin Gaye's song "Dont Do It". I love when Rick and Levon sing in harmony. And of course "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is a masterpiece. How a Canadian can capture the hopeless sentiment of the post Civi War south is amazing to me. I know he had Helm there to help, but still
I'm so happy you liked this. Rick's vocals on this rival almost any live performance ever. And when Garth comes in on the sax it is truly an amazing moment in music. The Band was really one of the tightest bands ever but could sound so raw and spontaneous.
Beautiful. This is my 2nd favourite moment from The Last Waltz - you're going to Love THE WEIGHT (with The Maple Singers). Thank you for another great reaction.
"And the dawn don't rescue me, no more..." This song hits HARD. And the word i think you are looking for, in terms of describing "The Band's" music, is "Authentic"
You guys manage to find my favourite songs! This is a very moving song to me.The music is warm and comforting, juxtaposing with the chill bleakness of the lyrics. Please listen to another Band song Whispering Pines for a similar experience.
Such a joy to see you two expressing your genuine emotions. Feeling like I did fifty years ago when I first heard this .Next up, "Stage Fright" from the same concert, also featuring Rick Danko.
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. These guys were so organic and real music. Thanks for the reaction!!! More from The Last Waltz please : )
Thank you, thank you, thank you ... hoping we'll sometime have the pleasure of sharing your reaction to other clips from this great concert film, like Richard Manuel's brilliant vocal on "The Shape I'm In", Van Morrison's great performance of his "Caravan", and many more ...
This is one of the perfect “ Howling at the Moon - Lovelorn “ song. I have spent so many painful teary evenings singing along with this at the top of my lungs because of the loss of love when I was young. Exquisite music ! Just the best group of musicians they are The Band 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
You guys need to listen to the Faces, Debris! I remember asking my dad for a speaker so I can listen to music back in 2009, and him being 65 at the time, he bought me a record player. Well now I like all these songs because I had to buy records based on the covers! Love you guys! Bless your family!
My favorite band! Raw, powerful, and chock full of passion. BTW, this is a shortened version of the song. There's another link that meshes another clip with this one so you can hear the entire song.
The reason they chose the name The Band, is because they started out as Bob Dylan's back up band. They all live in small town up state New York, Woodstock, and whenever they were out on the town alone or in a group, people would say, "he is with the band", or "that is the guys from the band". So when they went out on their own and had to come up with a name, they talked about different name, I think Richard suggested The Band, and Rick said "that is what everyone is calling us, I don't even want to think about another name". So they became The Band. I'm a huge fan, and they certainly lived up to that name. I have listened to their music since the Brown album came out in the late sixties.
Robbie said of this song "time is supposed to heal all wounds, except sometimes it doesn't, this is one of those times". He also wrote it with Rick in mind, felt Rick could sing it without it coming off as self pity, which he did not want. Of course. Robbie was right.
I'll probably get some push-back from this statement, but The Band is--arguably--the greatest (North) American band. (I say "North" American because all but one of the members were originally from Canada). Their rustic, Americana sound was unique and influential, and still sounds so authentic today. Rick Danko's plaintive vocals were perfectly suited to convey the heartbreak in this song. I'm so glad you two love this very special band.
Still love your comments, best on here. Yes, I bought 'The Last Waltz' years ago, fantastic DVD, almost a historical record now. Modern music just cannot live up to that (with a few exceptions).
They were called "The Band" because they were the backup musicians for Bob Dylan he just called them "the band." They toured with him when he was being booed for adding electric guitars, drums and a bass to his songs when his followers wanted him to keep his earlier persona with only an acoustic guitar. They had to put up with booing every night and kept going, eventually writing their own songs and putting their own spin on things. You really need to see The Last Waltz to get a better understanding of how they were revered by other musicians at the time. Neil Young says that it is an honor to be on the stage with them and you can see the warm feelings that all the other musicians share with them. There was also a book about the Band that was excellent.
Interesting about time healing all wound, Robbie said of this song supposedly time heals all wounds, except sometimes it does not, this is one of those times.
The name is kind of an inside joke. The Band was Bob Dylan's backing band in the mid-60s so the name came about simply because people just referred to them as the band when they were backing Dylan.
Your description of The Band is interesting. I read Robbie's book, and it is clear that they didn't want to be typically sixties rock and roll stars. At The Last Waltz, both Rick and Robbie don't have a beard, but if you look at picture of them from the late sixties and early seventies, they looked much different. Still good looking, but I like how the look here, both so handsome and so much charisma.
Great as it was, yet somehow the flim version is a shortened one, some verses amounted to 1:30 long has been cut from the performance. Got to hear full sound recording of the concert performance or studio version.
The sun don't shine no more like it did with you, my darling. These are my thoughts and the thoughts of so many others about that perfect love that came to an end.....for whatever reasons.
Such a heart wrenching song. Rick Danko’s vocal performance is perfect!
Anyone who have loved and lost can identify with this song. "And the dawn don't rescue me", always gets me. You get up in the morning and think things will be better, and then you realize it is not.
When Garth on the sax comes in, and then back to Robbie's guitar, and then back to the sax... perfection.
Chills
one of the best sad love songs ever made!
Garth can play any instrument you throw at him. He's the only surviving member and he turned 87 in August.
Danko sung his heart out! Beautiful song.
Hi guys … the Band is like comfort food…. It’s simple but beautiful…
Agree 👍💚
Genius. Masterful. Brilliant.
Rick Danko - RIP. Such a great artist.
There's a reason they are called "THE BAND" because they are "THE BAND"....so unique and so talented...all of them. Timeless music ..
Eric Clapton was so undone by their sound, he went to Woodstock to ask them if he could join The Band.
Their first two albums were like a bomb went off in music. People just felt it on a cellular level. Both utterly familiar and unkike anything else they had ever heard.
I miss The Band so intensely. This song is just so damn good.
Perfect, Robbie's lyrics, Rick heartbreaking voice, Robbie's guitar playing and Garth's sax, no wonder they are called The Band.
Being speechless after a performance is the loudest statement you can make.
Garth Hudson's sax at the end brought the song to a different level.
Still to this day, Rick and this song makes me cry.
Rick "I just want to make music."
Rick’s voice is heart wrenching on this song. Utterly beautiful!
This song captures the pure emotions of a broken heart. Most of us have felt everything this song describes.
One of the most beautifully sad songs ever written.
This song gets more beautiful every time you listen to it. Fifty years later it still brings a tear to the eye.
It's not that we didn't smell the roses in the '60s & '70s, it's just that we never thought they would ever wilt.
Tru Dat
So beautifully said
The heartbreak song of all times.
That is just a killer song. Danko's vocals on any song is great but this one wow.
The more of these guys you hear, and when you start learning their individual and collective storys, the more fascinating they become.
Thank you both for your lovely reaction! It is ok to be speechless - there are so many emotions wrapped up in this performance. Heart-achingly beautiful and raw.
Our pleasure! It is such a beautiful song ❤️
Nobody catches the feel of a song like these guys did.
Rick Denko is a legend 🤘🤘
A sax solo for the ages compliments of Garth Hudson, a true unsung musical genius. Thid music was from a time when songs touched your heart. The music of this time was so important in our lives.

This is one of my favorites from the Last Waltz. Love your reactions, you guys are special.
One of the most soulful and genuine bands of all time!!
Love his voice!
Got to see him live on the same stage playing with Paul Butterfield. What a night❤
Dominika, the way Andrei, looked at you. Priceless. I hope that translates well.
The Band had three legit lead vocalists. You may want to check out The Shape I'm In from The Last Waltz with keyboardist Richard Manuel on lead vocal.
It's so nice to see people really feel the music.
Sublime.
I urge you to watch " The Last Waltz ".
The Band's farewell tour with lots of amazing guests and interesting anecdotes too.
Have a bottle of nice wine and two glasses at the ready as you watch it, folks.
That is just an amazing song and an amazing performance.
The song has broken my heart over and over. Of course, it's the memory of her that is at the core. It's perfect.
Such a sad song, but played and sung so beautifully. Rick Danko’s voice was made for this song.
Robbie wrote is with Rick in mind. When he heard Rick sing it, he thought it was classic.
It makes no difference where I turn
I can't get over you and the flame still burns
It makes no difference, night or day
The shadow never seems to fade away
And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door
Now there's no love
As true as the love
That dies untold
But the clouds never hung so low before
It makes no difference how far I go
Like a scar, the hurt will always show
And it makes no difference who I meet
They're just a face in the crowd on a dead-end street
And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door
These old love letters
Well, I just can't keep
Just like the gambler says:
"Read 'em and weep"
And the dawn don't rescue me no more
Without your love, I'm nothing at all
Like an empty hall, it's a lonely fall
Since you've gone it's a losing battle
Stampeding cattle, they rattle the walls
And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door
Well, I love you so much
That it's all that I can do
Just to keep myself from telling you
That I never felt so alone before
Top 5 favorite band ever.
Thank you for sharing. Much love 💚
You two are so emotionally in tune it is a joy to watch.

I first heard this when I was a teenager. I'm in my 60's now, and it still rips my heart out the way Rick Danko delivered this vocal performance.

Another singer from The Band, Richard Manuel singing The Shape I'm In, same concert. A bit more upbeat, you'll love it.
Two more for you. Don't you break my heart and Caravan (with Van Morrison). Both from The Last Waltz.
We have reacted to The Weight already. Please search in our...what a song 💚🎶
Beautiful song.. Garth Hudson's saxophone solo is ethereal.
"And the dawn don't rescue me, no more..." This song hits HARD. And the word i think you are looking for, in terms of describing "The Band's" music, is "Authentic"
Yes! 👍💚
You guys manage to find my favourite songs!

Yay, I've been anticipated you guys getting to this song. And you did not disappoint!
Thank you Bless be
Thank you for doing more The Band reactions. Great stuff
I am so happy you did this song, The-Band were the best!
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. These guys were so organic and real music. Thanks for the reaction!!! More from The Last Waltz please : )

Such a great song! I love you guys getting to appreciate the music from what I call the golden age. :)
Over the years this has become my favourite song of theirs. I started with "Up On Cripple Creek" (still have the 45!).
The Band
Makes you appreciate TH-cam knowing the only living member left if Garth but we get to watch these great moments.
The Band can tear your heart out.
You guys need to listen to the Faces, Debris! I remember asking my dad for a speaker so I can listen to music back in 2009, and him being 65 at the time, he bought me a record player. Well now I like all these songs because I had to buy records based on the covers! Love you guys! Bless your family!

I absolutely love this song. ❤
It's a beautiful but sad song ❤❤
I had never heard this before....beautifully done 💚🎶🎵
Good reactions.
When music was truly music
Please listen to more! Try "Don't Do It ", another one of my favorites.

there's a quote I once heard, something like "the pain is the price of love"
Life is about suffering, and for that we get a ton of good music to listen to :)
You need to watch the Last Waltz. Film of their last concert with guess. I just watched it again about a month a go.
Robbie said of this song "time is supposed to heal all wounds, except sometimes it doesn't, this is one of those times". He also wrote it with Rick in mind, felt Rick could sing it without it coming off as self pity, which he did not want. Of course. Robbie was right.

💔 Thanks for the video! ☮💜🎶
Stage-fright is an excellent Band song with Rick on lead. Enjoy

Thank you for explaining 😊 Love and peace from Romania 💚
Interesting about time healing all wound, Robbie said of this song supposedly time heals all wounds, except sometimes it does not, this is one of those times.
You need to read Robby’s bio TESTIFY. It’s a beautiful book
You haven’t heard their other singer yet. Richard Manuel. The Shape I’m In from this same concert is so good.
The name is kind of an inside joke. The Band was Bob Dylan's backing band in the mid-60s so the name came about simply because people just referred to them as the band when they were backing Dylan.
Yeah everyone called them the Band before they called themselves the Band
GREATNESS!😎👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

The band are in the top 5 best ever. You should watch the Last Waltz film- I know you’d both enjoy it so much
Great as it was, yet somehow the flim version is a shortened one, some verses amounted to 1:30 long has been cut from the performance. Got to hear full sound recording of the concert performance or studio version.
The sun don't shine no more like it did with you, my darling. These are my thoughts and the thoughts of so many others about that perfect love that came to an end.....for whatever reasons.
All the last waltz is great - chest fever and whispering pines are a couple great ones outside of the last waltz
If you want to hear Richard Manuel sing, check out "I shall be released", from this same concert.
