Bob Dylan. Joan Collins. Joni. Crosby Stills Nash and Young. And they are part of the classic wonderful. And more than dozens of other concerts. My father was rich and flew me to concerts. He didn't care for the music but I did. I am old but have seen the best.
I had the great good fortune to hear/see Mavis Staples and her band as the headliners at the Zoo Bar Music Festival (07/19&20/2019), 10 days after her 80th birthday. The woman is a force of nature. Her recent album "We Get By" is most highly recommended.

Rick Danko was the man. Not only a great bass player, he had the best stage moves I have ever seen. It was fun to watch him as well as listen to him, and he could sing too.
I always think that Rick Danko was the special ingredient that made The Band work, but then I think about it some more and can never escape the conclusion that every member was unique and uniquely essential to the group in his own way. They wouldn't have been as great without each and every one.

They were Dylan's backing band for several years prior to going on their own. The Staples Singers were Roebuck (Pops) Staples (RIP) and his daughters, Mavis 2nd verse Cleotha & Yvonne (Both RIP) They had their own career and recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama. The Band was originally The Hawks, a band put together in Canada by Ronnie Hawkins. They quit him and went to the US where they picked up a singer named Bob Dylan and became The Band. Hawkins had a great ability to recognize and develop talent. He put together another band that left him, picked up a singer named Janis Joplin in California and became the Full Tilt Boogie Band.

This from the concert movie called The Last Waltz. The Band decided to breakup and had a farewell concert, inviting their many friends to sing with them over course of concert. The Band was originally the backup musicians for Bob Dylan. The Band decided to write and record songs apart from Dylan and became quite successful on their own.
Actually they were originally the backing band for Ronnie Hawkins, when they were called The Hawks. They’d already been a hard-rocking touring band for 5 years before Dylan hired them to help him go electric.
That is a custom made double neck made for Robbie Robertson. Most double necks are a regular 6 string on the bottom and a 12 string above, but this one was special made with a mandolin above. The Band started out as Bob Dylan's original studio backing band. The older, black man and woman are Pops & Mavis Staples.
In late summer 1965, Bob Dylan was looking for a backup band for his first U.S. "electric" tour. Levon and the Hawks were recommended. With Dylan, the Hawks played a series of concerts from September 1965 through May 1966, billed as Bob Dylan and the Band. This is how they got their name.

Those bands from the 60's and 70's were just so talented. Not only did they write the songs, sing and play the instruments, most of them also drove the bus, worked the mixing board, and set up the equipment. No filters, no auto-tune, no second takes, just great artists leaving it all out there on the stage. I love every voice and note in this classic track.
This show, in my opinion, was one of the' greatest concerts ever held in the history of music....period. Please watch the documentary that this performance is in, 'The Last Waltz' produced by Martin Scorcese. It belongs in a Time Capsule for future generations....
I remember when I first heard the band early 70's. It was a sound I never heard at that time. I was 15 or 16. I was still living at home. I heard this song and the song ' The night they drove old Dixie down.' Up on cripple creek. I remember thinking these songs could have been written in the 1860s instead of the 1960s. I have loved the band ever since. Nice to know other generations enjoy them as much.

I'm 65 and still remember the Staple Singers (great gospel) singing with Levon Helms (RIP, look to see him in the movie with Mark Walberg "Shooter" "Still got the shovel"). Every year they do a Love for Levon concert were several artists sang this song in his honor. His is the one playing the drums. He passed away from cancer.

I recommend everyone watch the documentary Muscle Shoals. It's about a man with a vision, a local backup band, and talented singers such as Aretha Franklin making hit after hit after hit. You won't be disappointed.

Great reaction, this was a legendary performance from the 1976 film The Last Waltz which was a documentary about The Band's farewell concert in San Francisco at the Cow Palace. The film is loaded with greats including Bob Dylan whom The Band played with over the years. Even Ex Beatles drummer Ringo Starr performed with The Band and Dylan doing his classic I Shall Be Released to close it out. Two more great live so song's from the film are The Night They Drove Dixie Down and Up On Cripple Creek. Those would be nice to see, you won't be disappointed. The Band were legendary performers.
@@Mark-tu5yl Were you there? That would be cool as hell. I wish I'd seen The Band live. I saw The Beatles in Pittsburgh in 64 for my sixth birthday. Best birthday surprise ever !. I also saw Dylan at least a half dozen times. He was a different breed of cat, the most I ever heard him speak was maybe a dozen words all the way down to zero words and live he could be great or he could suck. He just didn't care what the audience thought.
Levon Helm, the drummer, was a genius. It is a shame how those guys ended up at odds with each other. They were a brief but brilliant flame. Hell, Bob Dylan hung out at their house. The Weight is the best feel good song of all time.
This was recorded live as part of their final album, "The Last Waltz", as The Band prepared to end their successful touring and concert career together. They invited a host of friends and compatriots in the music entertainment industry to join them in their final live performance together. This song, "The Weight", is one of those that has a soulful, genuine, heartfelt feel, sound and vibe to it...the song is arguably The Band's signature song and also their best work. What they were doing was definitely Americana, in fact in some ways the story of The Band could be that it was Robbie Robertson telling the story of the US South from working there, living there, and meeting people like Levon Helm's father, a conversation with whom was the inspiration for "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", a story told in the voice of a Southerner. But it's also Canadian Americana, if you check out Arcadian Driftwood for example. The Staples were a huge influence on The Band, as they've explained. You can see it in the way the harmonies are put together in both bands, an unusual approach where they just sort of drift around, rather than following more usual patterns. For people who thought of The Band as vaguely "country", realizing that maybe their biggest influence, second only to Bob Dylan, was the Staple Singers can help explain why they sounded the way they did. They also did gigs with a lot of blues players like Muddy Waters before they were Bob Dylan's band.

They stuck it out and it made them stronger for it. Dylan's influence also gave them a new direction, adding rootsy Blues Folk to their repertoire. This is when they adopted the name The Band, because behind both Hawkins and Dylan, that's what they were. They released their first album in 1968 and had instant success, managing many hits until they broke up after this final concert.

That is a custom made double neck made for Robbie Robertson. Most double necks are a regular 6 string on the bottom and a 12 string above, but this one was special made with a mandolin above.
The Band started out as Bob Dylan's original studio backing band.
The older, black man and woman are Pops & Mavis Staples.
In late summer 1965, Bob Dylan was looking for a backup band for his first U.S. "electric" tour. Levon and the Hawks were recommended. With Dylan, the Hawks played a series of concerts from September 1965 through May 1966, billed as Bob Dylan and the Band. This is how they got their name.

Those bands from the 60's and 70's were just so talented. Not only did they write the songs, sing and play the instruments, most of them also drove the bus, worked the mixing board, and set up the equipment. No filters, no auto-tune, no second takes, just great artists leaving it all out there on the stage. I love every voice and note in this classic track.

I remember when I first heard the band early 70's. It was a sound I never heard at that time. I was 15 or 16. I was still living at home. I heard this song and the song ' The night they drove old Dixie down.' Up on cripple creek. I remember thinking these songs could have been written in the 1860s instead of the 1960s. I have loved the band ever since. Nice to know other generations enjoy them as much.

It's so fun watching young people find pleasure in song that we grew up on. I'm 65 and still remember the Staple Singers (great gospel) singing with Levon Helms (RIP, look to see him in the movie with Mark Walberg "Shooter" "Still got the shovel"). Next listen the Robbie Roberson tune, "Somewhere down the crazy River" "Oh, This is sure stirring up some ghosts for me, You like it now, but you'll learn to love it later".

Every year they do a Love for Levon concert were several artists sang this song in his honor. His is the one playing the drums. He passed away from cancer.

Yes Rxyce, this collaboration was and is legendary. Two incredible bands that together created a masterpiece; especially at a time when people needed to see diversity coming together to do something great, and it was more than great. Beautiful is not a strong enough word for this performance.

The Band were the white group. The Staple Singers were an American gospel, soul, and R&B singing group. Roebuck "Pops" Staples, the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children Cleotha, Pervis, and Mavis.
Actually, Robbie Robertson is of Mohawk Six Nations ancestry - not to get nitpicky - but it is National Indigenous Day up here in Canada! Cheers...

Great reaction, this was a legendary performance from the 1976 film The Last Waltz which was a documentary about The Band's farewell concert in San Francisco at the Cow Palace. The film is loaded with greats including Bob Dylan whom The Band played with over the years. Even Ex Beatles drummer Ringo Starr performed with The Band and Dylan doing his classic I Shall Be Released to close it out. Two more great live so song's from the film are The Night They Drove Dixie Down and Up On Cripple Creek. Those would be nice to see, you won't be disappointed. The Band were legendary performers.
@@Mark-tu5yl Were you there? That would be cool as hell. I wish I'd seen The Band live. I saw The Beatles in Pittsburgh in 64 for my sixth birthday. Best birthday surprise ever !. I also saw Dylan at least a half dozen times. He was a different breed of cat, the most I ever heard him speak was maybe a dozen words all the way down to zero words and live he could be great or he could suck. He just didn't care what the audience thought.

Levon Helm, the drummer, was a genius. It is a shame how those guys ended up at odds with each other. They were a brief but brilliant flame. Hell, Bob Dylan hung out at their house. The Weight is the best feel good song of all time.
This was recorded live as part of their final album, "The Last Waltz", as The Band prepared to end their successful touring and concert career together. They invited a host of friends and compatriots in the music entertainment industry to join them in their final live performance together. This song, "The Weight", is one of those that has a soulful, genuine, heartfelt feel, sound and vibe to it...the song is arguably The Band's signature song and also their best work. Robby Robertson could play that double-guitar and Levon Helm could drum like a boss AND sing lead at the same time, no problem.

It's not jus Americana, most of the band are Canadian boys always remember that.
@ninja vigilante Canada is on the North American continent, it's America also. What they were doing was definitely Americana, in fact in some ways the story of The Band could be that it was Robbie Robertson telling the story of the US South from working there, living there, and meeting people like Levon Helm's father, a conversation with whom was the inspiration for "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", a story told in the voice of a Southerner. But it's also Canadian Americana, if you check out Arcadian Driftwood for example.
The Staples were a huge influence on The Band, as they've explained. You can see it in the way the harmonies are put together in both bands, an unusual approach where they just sort of drift around, rather than following more usual patterns. For people who thought of The Band as vaguely "country", realizing that maybe their biggest influence, second only to Bob Dylan, was the Staple Singers can help explain why they sounded the way they did. They also did gigs with a lot of blues players like Muddy Waters before they were Bob Dylan's band.
