If you were wondering where the sax player was until the end, he was the guy playing the organ. They were all multi-instrumentalists. Never a band like them before or since.
When you consider that Robbie Robertson also wrote "The Weight," the probability that THIS is his best song, makes you realize what a great songwriter Robertson was. RIP. Also, Rick Danko's lead vocal perfectly conveys the deep emotional content of this masterpiece. This is real music.
Played at my Brother's funeral...30 years it still hurts. Such a heartbreaking song. I know it's about losing a lover.. but to me..when Danko sings.. 'Makes no difference how far i go..like a scar the hurt will always show'..& "well i love you so much..its all that i can do..just to keep myself from telling you.. that i never felt so alone before"..man ..i can relate to that pain even the guitar is crying.😢thank you to the person that requested this & thank you for your reaction .you found the song soothing , we all get different feelings..me ..i get agony, loneliness..each word & each sentence...total freaking dispair.. Lol😊 did i go overboard with my emotions? You heard it differently ..oh well ..i guess.. it makes no difference. Just glad you played it✌
Rick sings with so much emotion, it cuts right to the bone. Garth on sax at the end just brings a sense of hope or at least acceptance at the end. Amazing performance
Listen to the lyrics, it is about a love affair gone wrong. Anyone that have loved and lost can identify with this song. And Rick puts all his feelings into it. The line "and the dawn don't rescue me no more" gets me every time.
When I heard the news that Robbie Robertson had died, the line "and the sun don't shine anymore, and the rain falls on my door", came to mind. They were all unique, but Robbie's songwriting and guitar playing was like no one else, and Rick's voice and soulful singing tears your heart out.
Robertson is the fourth member of The Band to die, August 2023. following Richard Manuel in 1986, Rick Danko in 1999 and vocalist/drummer Levon Helm in 2012. Keyboardist and organist Garth Hudson is now the group's only living member.
You can feel joy listening to it because the lyrics Robbie wrote were so amaziing, and Rick sings it with such feelings and soul, however the song is considered one of the best heartbreak songs of all times "and the dawn don't resuce me". I think most of us remember after a break up, we would get up in the morning and thinking things will be better, and then as the day goes on you realize they are not better the dawn don't rescue you! Robbie was in his twenties when he wrote this, some of his other master pieces he wrote in his early to mid twenties, he was an old soul.
Rick puts soo must emotion into this song, "rattle the waaall. He knew how to draw it out. Robbie wrote this song with Rick in mind, felt he would do it justice. He was right. Love Rick and The Band.
Mugs, glad you enjoyed it. There's just so much emotion in this song, and like "The Weight", it has an almost gospel feel. Pink Floyd "Us And Them" has amazing sax that trades off with the organ. It's another emotional song.
Wait a minute; the Beatles had three great singers. The Band actually had four. It wasn't discovered until the main songwriter and guitarist Robbie Robertson came out with his first solo album " Fallen Angel", the title song written about one of The Band's members, Richard Manuel, who was the first to pass away. Then Rick Danko, the bass player and the lead singer of "it makes no difference". Then, Levon Helm, who was the drummer and one of the two main lead vocalists, along with Richard Manuel. Then, very recently, Robbie Robertson. It's impossible to pick out one of the vocalists in this band and put him above another. They are all the "best singer for the song", and that's how it all shakes out with this crew.
I have truly enjoyed your reactions to Elvis, I won't lie that's what brought me to your channel, I would love to see you react to American Trilogy, Just Pretend and you will be amazed at his gospel songs, that was a true love of his, but should you continue down this rabbit hole, you will be amazed. Thank you for checking out the King I will enjoy watching you become a fan, keep up the good work son,and I will be watching from Tennessee ❤
SO cool that you discovered this performance of this song. It has been a longtime favorite of mine for decades. I believe you would be in heaven if you watched the entire movie of “The Last Waltz”… the film was made by Martin Scorsese and there are several music artists that perform with The Band. Loving music the way you do, you owe it to yourself to watch it.
Not quite true. When Eric Clapton first heard their music, he was blown away. He was with Cream at the time, and felt they were stagnating. He flew from England to the US and went upstate New York (Woodstock) to meet with The Band, and was going to ask them to become a member, however he never got the nerve to ask. It was only years later when he introduced Robbie to the Rock and Roll hall of fame, he told him that.

Garth Hudson, a real talent guy could play everything
@@mattredmon2857 And the last surviving member of The Band.

Right there with you✌
Rick Danko & "The Band" ripping your heart.
Also... pretty much every performance from The Last Waltz is pretty legendary... worth watching more for sure!
The Band were such a original tight genius band ,their musical intelligence will move humans as long as they are heard. ☮️

I think the song is for anyone who have lost someone the love. Being it a lover or family member.

Love this song and Rick Danko. I am glad you noticed how well they all blended their musicality into a unit, a BAND, THE BAND!

Really loving your reactions. The Band is just so damn good.
That marriage of Gospel & Blues is what gets me. Brother Guitar is home and Cousin Saxophone has come to play. Oh, yes!

Robbie's guitar playing and Garth's sax, the back forth you just don't hear often or ever. Loved the entire concert, The Last Waltz.
DANKO !!!

Niiice. One of the great heartbreaking songs ever. ❤ So glad you enjoyed it.
It's a real classic song, and such a great performance. Love Rick Danko's singing.
Great reaction to one of my all time favorite songs and band. You got it right they were perfect, especially at The Last Waltz.
It's Immediately obvious ,you are a man of true class and exquisite taste! Thanks for sharing sir.
This was the first song played at my husbands funeral. His daughter was in charge and she made it happen. Not a dry eye in the house after this song
Garth Hudson. He is the oldest and only surviving member of The Band
Chills every time.
One of the best groups ever. Never heard this THX.
A very very favorite song of mine!
My favorite Band song
Its hard to not love The Band they inspired just about everyone after them.

You should try Ophelia by The Band
The same album

This is The Band saving the very best for last ...The Last Waltz ! Incomparable and unbelievable quality of musicianship ..The Band !
You can’t go wrong from anything from The Last Waltz.
RIP Rick 💔
Garth Hudson. Keyboardist. Sax an accordia
"So Complete". As good a description of The Band as I have ever heard. Now that I think of it, it's also what makes the Beatles different.
Gives me a little bit of Jerry Garcia Band vibes...great stuff!
Maybe the tightest bands ever along with the Dead.
Listen to "the Weight" studio version and "chest Fever"
Listen to the lirics.
The Band were The Band, no one like them.
Eric Clapton wanted to join this Band. But they said NO......
