Paul Simon wrote this song on the platform of Widnes station in Lancashire, England in 1964. He was on a tour of English folk clubs and wishing he was home with Kathy Chitty, the love who was waiting ‘silently for me’. He wrote several songs about their relationship including ‘Kathy’s Song’ and ‘America’ (‘Kathy I said as we boarded the Greyhound in Pittsburgh’).

Back in 1995, I took a one year job in the small Alberta town of Drumheller. My fiancée, Leanne, was living and working three hours away in Edmonton. Each Friday night, after work, I drove the lonely highway back to her. We were married in 1996, and a few years later, we started a music school in the basement of our house. 25 years later, we're together and in Love. Our school has grown to the point where we can come together to work each day. Some people have said that they couldn't work together as a married couple, but for us, it works! I'm so glad I don't have to drive the lonely highway anymore, the love of my life is with me everyday.

Paul Simon wrote their songs and is the lead singer on this song. Art Garfunkel has a beautiful tenor voice that really shines on their biggest song, Bridge Over Troubled Water. Paul Simon had a terrific solo career after Simon and Garfunkel broke up in 1970. Simon and Garfunkel were major musical artists of the 1960s, with many hits and many great songs that weren't necessarily hit songs for the radio of the day.

If I were forced to choose a favorite S&G song, this might have to be it. It seems that we are all searching for a home that we can't seem to get back to. This song speaks to that longing. I love you guys. You are clearly among the best, most honest and perceptive reactors out there. Your amazement at S&G’s brilliance is well founded. Paul Simon is in the very top echelon of songwriters as exhibited throughout his association with Art Garfunkel and his later, far longer solo career. If you haven’t yet, check out Sounds of Silence, their very first hit, America, Kathy’s Song and Cecilia. As for Paul’s solo career, his late 1980’s album Graceland is a must, with the title song, Boy in the Bubble, Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes and several others. He’s had way too many to mention….you’ll love them all!

Much more than two years. They met at school in 1953, released their first record in 1957 (under the name Tom and Jerry) and didn’t break up until 1970. Paul Simon has a fantastic catalogue of subsequent solo releases - perhaps especially the Graceland album, where he collaborated with traditional South African musicians.

    • @terri2494
      @terri2494 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

They were eleven years old when they met. Through choir and musical productions at school they discovered that their voices blended well together. They would go to one of their homes after school to practice their harmonization - notes, dynamics, pronunciation, and when they started and ended each word. Their harmonies make me think of two currents flowing down a stream, intertwining and separating and coming together again, indistinguishable from each other to the casual observer. They make it sound effortless but there was a lot of hard work behind their signature harmonies.

For me the genius of Paul Simon’s song writing is how well it’s crafted to be both simple and complex, both musically and lyrically, all at once. The vocal harmonies he and Art created had the effect of removing any tension or stress from your thoughts. This despite the fact that the majority of Simon’s songs are very introspective and somewhat depressing. You will observe this more if you continue reviewing his catalogue into his solo career. I would also suggest his many interviews where he very candidly and generously explains his song writing process.

Great reaction and thanks for sharing. Paul Simon is an amazing song writer and soulful singer. Art Garfunkel has an angelic voice that perfectly aligns with Paul. The reason you feel so much is a good writer tells truths which tie into our emotions. Amazing song writers touch us even when we don't want to be, because its truth is so beautiful and so relatable. Don't stop expressing yourself no matter which words you choose to use, the truth and joy comes thru no matter the language or words chosen. Please keep reacting the way you are, because that is why I watch. Chris

Awards and Honors (from Paul Simon's Wikipedia page):
Simon has earned sixteen Grammy Awards for his solo and collaborative work, including three for Album of the Year (Bridge Over Troubled Water, 1971; Still Crazy After All These Years, 1976; and Graceland, 1988), and a Lifetime Achievement Award. He is one of only six artists to have won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year more than once as the main credited artist.
In 1998, he was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for the Simon & Garfunkel album Bridge over Troubled Water. In 2002, he received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for his song "Father and Daughter".
Simon has twice been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: in 1990 as a member of Simon & Garfunkel; and in 2001 for his solo career. In 2006 he was named as one of the "100 People Who Shaped the World" by Time. In 2011, Rolling Stone named him one of the 100 greatest guitarists, and in 2015 he was ranked 8th in their list of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. “El Condor Pasa” is as beautiful as “Scarborough Fair.” And Scott MacKenzie’s “San Francisco” is as beautiful as either. And “Red is the Rose” is too. And “Barbara Allen” is too. And “Highland Laddie” is too. And “The Minstrel Boy” is too. And “The Spanish Lady.” And so is “The Town I Loved So Well.”
My pattern has a reason: the songs never end, even the *most beautiful* songs you’ve ever heard is the journey of a lifetime: it is heaven. You are on that road. I can give you the links to all of those another time, if you ask. But they are easy to find. Blessings!! ❤

When I was a teenager (1997), I worked at a dollar theater in Boise, Idaho. After getting out of school, I would open it up, get the concession stand ready, made sure the film was spliced correctly, got the projector ready to go.

What a touching reaction from the two of you. I'm sure "home" is out there, eagerly awaiting your arrival. ❤
But to set the record straight, their career was much longer than 2 years. Just for starters, they were together from 1956 to 58 and from 1963 to 1970. And they reunited many times after that.
But their discography is shorter -- probably 1964/5 to 1970.

In those days - the 60s and 70s, when I was young - songs had to be short or they didn't get played on the radio. I enjoy you both - your sincerity. Also it's a pleasure to find people who love something that I have loved for decades. Art Garfunkel's miraculous voice... and Paul Simon's lyrics. Simon continued to make great music - try Rhythm of the Saints or - of course - Graceland...

As a kid, I played the bookends and bridge over troubled water albums practically until the grooves were worn out. Headphones, in bed, just escaping into their songs. I mean, to this day I can sing songs like punky’s dilemma and fakin it without missing a word.

I love the analogy of a dragonfly dipping on the water. You have a poetic soul young lady. You both have a sensitive spirit. You do need to react to Simon and Garfunkel sing " Bridge Over Troubled Water ".

You can't go wrong with these guys, they made a lot of great songs, listen to "America", "Kathy's Song" or "The Only Living Boy in New York".

I hope you react to America next. I would contest that it's even better than Homeward Bound. It's both very sentimental and musically amazing! It's one of their biggest singles for a good reason!

Sound of Silence and Bridge over Troubled Water are there most famous songs. Sound of Silence has been covered by so many artists and the lyrics are great.

Listen to American Tune by Paul Simon solo. Or The Only Living Boy In New York by Simon & Garfunkel. Or just about every other song ever written by Paul Simon, there are so many gems.

You will have to listen to ‘Bridge Over Troubled Waters’, Homeward Bound was one of their earlier hits ! At the the time they where living in a flat in the North of England. Paul Simon was the Writer whilst Art Garfunkel ( the tall one had the most melodious voice)

What a wonderful journey you are on with these two mega stars . So much more for you to discover , I used to sneak into the dinning room at home and listen to their albums in the days when using the record player was by permission only , and only after homework was done .

You can't go wrong with any song of theres, all gems! Apart from the obvious 2 being mentioned, Bleekers street and The Dangling conversation are a compelling listen. Paul was and still is a genius.
