This is based on an actual event The story is a manager went into an after hours bar and picked up a hot looking girl he danced with her all night but as morning approached he noticed a 5 o'clock shadow on "her" face. "Wait a minute..." Literally tears of laughter. This has to be the funniest reaction to this track I have ever seen. Don't worry. You'll get over her ;)
When I was a kid, I never listened to the lyrics that closely, I just sang along to the chorus. I had no idea what this song was about, until a friend of mine pointed it out to me 😂
Love it when people react to this song, and watching their faces when they get to the punch line. I'm pretty sure I read that this was a true story involving one of the band's roadies. When the band performed this on "Top Of The Pops", a British T.V. pop show, they had to change the coca-cola to cherry cola due to copyright issues.
The change of lyrics was not because of copyright but because it would be seen as advertising Coca Cola, which is not allowed by the BBC. Ray Davies was forced to make a 6,000-mile (9,700 km) round-trip flight from New York to London and back on June 3, 1970, interrupting the band's American tour, to change those words.
Not a copyright issue; Coca Cola would have been delighted. Another comment has already explained that the change was actually because the BBC, a non-commercial TV/radio network, did not permit advertising, product placement or anything which could be construed as promoting a specific brand or commercial enterprise. So I'll add another example of this. When Mott the Hoople's cover of David Bowie's 'All the Young Dudes' became popular, they had to issue a new version with the line: "Wendy's stealing clothes from Marks and Sparks" (Marks and Sparks being a widely accepted affectionate slang term for popular UK retailer Marks & Spencer) replaced with: "Wendy's stealing clothes from unlocked cars" in order for it to be played on BBC radio stations and on what was the UK's most influential pop music TV show.
@@way2deep100 I get the message guys... my mistake. The Mott situation is interesting, regarding getting airplay. Did they change the lyrics on the 45 release then? Or was there a separate version used just for airplay, and was there actually a physical release?
@@brucster99b2 I never bought it but whenever I heard it at parties etc. I heard "Marks & Sparks", so it is entirely likely that the BBC were sent copies of the version which complied with their broadcast regulations while the 'genuine' article was in the stores. I'm sure the argument would have gone: "Marks & Sparks is not the store's actual name" but, at the time, a 45's commercial success in the UK was pretty much contingent on the BBC playing it, so artists tended to fall in line even against their better judgement.
@@alanoakley3242 I was thinking the same thing. If you're from the U.K., you'd know what Marks & Sparks is a reference to, but someone in the States would probably be a little perplexed, as not grasping the meaning of it.

Lola is one of countless hits by one of Englands finest bands. Ray Davies was a genius as a song writer. The Kinks were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of fame in 1990.
The Kink's kicks ass on this song. The voice, the melodies, drums and guitars are edgy and melodic at the same time. That's really what keeps this song so iconic for so many decades. Great Songwriting!
Yea the song was written about one of their managers who was so drunk one night he didn't realize he was dancing with a transvestite. The band members fell on the floor laughing.
I have to admit when I first heard this song years ago I didn't quite understand what it was all about, but after hearing this song a few times I listened to the lyrics a little more closely I said to myself ohhh, I got it now........ lol , thanks for the reaction guys........
Great, funny reaction......this song always produces a humorous first listen reaction! The Kinks were an amazing band with a vast catalogue of great songs and were responsible for creating one of the first "Heavy" riffs with " You really got me"! ...a truly great band.
The Kinks are one of the most surprising and rewarding musical journeys you can take. The sheer volume of great song after great song during the '60's and well into the '70's is at least the equal of their better known contemporaries. Lovely reaction as always guys.
The song rocks! I was a kid. Didn't hear any lyrics except L-O-L-A. Once some other kids started to repeat things from their parents.....I still didn't get it. Why would somebody do that? Talk about ahead of it's time. This was the 60's. "Walk on the Wild Side" is another great song, and the colored girls sing...
Oh my gosh. I am laughing so hard. When the light bulb comes on, your expression had me laughing uncontrollably. Thank goodness I wasn’t at work! Great reaction!
This is the best ever reaction I have seen to this song classic, released in 1970 when I was 16 it did not take long to work it out for us teenagers back then the lines that I think absolutely gives it away is "Girls will be boys and boys will be girls" "It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world, except for Lola"
This was decades ahead of its time!! Absolutely love your reactions!! Ape man is another classic which is also way ahead of its time. Warmest wishes from the UK

This was just awesome when it was released, because most of you are too young to remember the sexual revolution had started. Love the Kinks and I love watching you both. Thank you for making an old woman happy.
To really appreciate the effect The Kinks had on rock music, you need to listen to their earliest hits, such as You Really Got Me (one of the most classic guitar riffs), All Day and All of the Night, Tired of Waiting for You, and Sunny Afternoon. Enjoy!
I was probably about 13 when I actually listened to this and understood it in the early 70s. It's always been funny to me to see people figure it out. I admit to a bit of queasiness at the mismatch between first impressions and reality but have always been able to laugh about it. I hope the song inspires that same ability to take things with good humor in most of those who listen. It is a mixed up world in oh so many ways, but you gotta roll with it.
That was one of the most honest reactions I've seen, and funny! That poor man looked like a deer in the headlights as it dawned on him what was going on....meanwhile his wife pretty much had it from the beginning. You guys are awesome!
Haha, it is true that a picture paints a thousand words and your face @5:33 was an absolute "picture" of realisation! This is a top tune and you guys did a brilliant job reacting as always.
I love watching your reactions, this song has been a favourite of mine for well over 50 years. Of course as a 12 year old it took a long while to decipher it, the way the lyrics introduce more and more doubt about Lola as the story unfolds. Allegedly it is loosely based on an incident in a London nightclub. Watching Dominika's smile appear took me back to when the penny first dropped with me.
Ray sang this song for The Royal Family at The Queen's Command Performance in the Buckingham Garden. Princess Diana and the young sons really enjoyed it, The Queen and Prince Charles remained pretty stoic during the whole performance. The crowd loved it and sang along to the refrain of "Lola".
