With ALL of the runaway and stolen pets, it absolutely boggles my mind that there hasn't been numerous companies who have made GPS tracking locators for pets. They'd make $$$.
I agree! I would love to create one by myself but it's kinda hard... because to send the GPS data from anywhere at any time, you normally need a mobile network. And those things aren't free. Apple made the most practical non-mobile one, with Bluetooth, because of their power. I think Samsung made one too, but it's kinda ugly and I don't know how practical it is yet. But non-Bluetooth ones are also available, they just cost money: Tractive is the least expensive one to us: tractive.com/r/6GGS8o Buit there's also this for the US: tryfi.com And another one: www.halocollar.com And one more: doglo.eu/en/ Apart from mobile GPS ones and Bluetooth ones (Airtag), there's quite a few basic ones - QR code pet tags. Which is just a advanced Facebook profile page for dogs that lets you know when someone visits it (because they opened the page thanks to the tag on the collar). But those don't do really anything unless scanned.
Good review - we had an airtag and it was pretty useless when walking in the fields and woods/hills etc. Tractive is the way to go if you really need to walk long and far or if your dog takes himself for walks on his own (like ours) and you want to know where he is going.
@@giao2380 What is the value of the asset you are attaching the airtag to? If it is valuable to you, then you would want the best possible insurance....no? The Airtag is useless on dogs. If a dog runs away it will generally always make it further than 30Meters away (meaning you cannot track it unless it is in range of another iPhone somewhere - hope). So you would need to be in an urban environment. It would be totally useless on a large beach, forest, rural location etc. The Tractive has no range limit - has amazing app and heat maps... the two a incomparable. The airtag is useful for car/car keys or suitcase - outside of this, I do not see a use for it.
i have 4 dogs and one that sometimes gets out of the house/backyard if i am not watching my back (closing the back gate fully or she sneaks out when im leaving the front door and not noticing). So I got this for her collar so that I can check in on her whenever i want to see where shes at. I got ring cameras around the house too so i can check in to make sure. its affordable and I live in a city so theres thousands of iphones/ipads around.
Since buying a 4-pack won't "break the bank" PLUS living in the city, we at least have an idea of where to start if one off our pups were to go wandering off...as they did yesterday morning
I love my dog way too much to not look into solutions. There is a lot of theft and runaway dogs in our city and I’m not going to allow my dog to join that crowd. Thanks for making this video and I have a solution to help keep the air tag secure using 3d printed parts.
Tractive has a battery that doesn't last forever (maybe a week max from charge to charge), especially if your dog runs away just when you forgot to charge it / are about to charge it. The airtag is a nice backup, because the airtag's battery lasts a year and it doesn't have a monthly cost.
@frat1672 yes, exactly. The Airtag only gets updated when it goes near Apple devices. In the city, you could totally get away with using just the AirTag. But when the stars align and you encounter a bad situation where your dog happens to run to the woods, or just avoid all Apple devices, then that is where your choice of prevention will come to light. We don't want Any dogs to get lost, so a multi-level backup makes the most sense to us. Covers as many usecases as possible.
Don’t the AirTags start to beep if the host iPhone moves more than 33 feet away from the AirTag? Also, I thought Apple updated it’s anti-stalking efforts by making this speaker on an AirTag beep constantly after its been separated from its host iPhone for more than six hours. Any input on this is appreciated!
I've noticed it beep a few times. But to me, it hasn't been a never ending beeping. It's just softly beeped for like 7 seconds and then it stopped. So yes, it might make a sound. No, it hasn't constantly started beeping.
Dog theft is typically much much lower than dogs just running away and getting lost. If theft is an issue in your region, sure! But typically, people help others' dogs get home.
The Airtag can be somewhat useful as a dog tracker in urban areas where there are other iOS devices nearby. However, in rural areas or places with unstable cellular signals, it may not be suitable. You could try the Aorkuler dog tracker, which is similar to the Airtag but offers a much longer tracking range.
@@dionne681 Google: You will need an iPhone/iPod touch running iOS 14.5 or later. Alternatively, you can use an iPad running iPadOS 14.5 or later. You can't set up an AirTag using a Mac, unfortunately.

Yes, in terms of battery, nothing beats the AirTag. For us, when we dog-sit dogs, then we put a Tractive on them and "Family share" it's location with the owners. An AirTag will just be yours and yours alone, so you could say it's just a security feature. But again, Tractive's battery won't last forever and you would have to pay a monthly charge per device.
@GamingDan10 that is true with ANYTHING... Dogs could also try to eat a regular dog tag as well, so not an airtag issue. Luckily the Keepaws collar has a super strong pocket, it's even hard for me to get it out. 🤗
Nice review! One suggestion however… Could you please turn your voice volume DOWN and the background music UP? I really enjoy that music and you talking all the time is really distracting!

Well hell. I was so enraptured by your lovely voice, I had to pull myself together and watch it again.
Im fine with it. I got one for my dog, using a specific type of collar, and removed the sound. No issues. I dont need to track every single movement.

I’m confused. Why tractive and airtag used together? The tractive alone would render airtag useless, correct?
