A good amount of games lately have this feeling of "come back in a year when its better"
Legends had it that THQ pulled the plug half a year before release so the studio had to massively cut corners while also raising the retail price. It's not like this or similar things haven't happened before.

@@Lanker4 well Biomutant was originally supposed to be a console only title, so who knows what happened inside the studio when they were forced to port it over to PC. This game was in development hell for the better part of its dev time.

Yeah that was a small issue I had with the lore. When people use made-up words in books, they'll typically splice two languages describing that word based on the tone. So say you want a pretty but strong way to describe something. You'd use maybe French combined with German.

I'm one of the pre-orderers, and yeah I feel a little scammed. I've only played about 3-4 hours so far, and the dialogue is by far the worst for me. It feels basically meaningless, and I've been very tempted to just skip it, cause it's exhausting. I enjoy the combat, but the lack of impact is a totally true thing. All I can do is hope they fix some things, and maybe even expand on the world.

I didn’t have any expectations for this game since the trailer. For me it looks exactly like Anthem and I said the same thing when I saw the trailer. This is and will always be garbage. Enemies are sponges that doesn’t react and they’re all the same, just with a different skin. A good game with a small team when it was released is Remnant from the Ashes, it is worth it.
have you even played it? 25 hours in and this is one of the best games i've played this year, if not the best. The game is beautiful, gameplay is fun if a bit repetitive, and the loot/crafting aspect is genuinely the best i've seen in any game

Imo the game is really enjoyable. Just not from the very start. I'm at a point of the game where I understand how it fully works and I'm having a blast.
Combat is just very poorly explained and parrying is very important yet hard to do, since the indicator is pretty much invisible. Overall, I like the systems, and I'm having a good time.

At least it wasn't named "Dread Behemoth" or some other boring ass name you see in every other boring ass game nowadays. I'm not sure 6 months would be enough for them to fix the majority of the game considering their time line. Narration and story seem like a pretty core aspect of a game
Aaaaand this is why I stick to indie games nowadays. Indie devs don't have giant budgets and can't afford to generally make their games graphically impressive, so they focus on having actual good gameplay and to make the experience as clean as possible.
Not to mention that generally, the most expensive indies are only around like, 30 dollars tops.

I hate when people mention that "It was made X amount of people, give them a break". No, I don't care how many people were working on it - if they want to sell it for $60, I'm going to judge it as a $60 game. And unfortunately, the $60 price tag is a very crowded one.
I got it for less then retail so I'm not judging it so brutally though the game does naturally feel very dated
Kinda arbitrary and intentionally biased. "Hey everyone let's judge something by the price tag and not the actual product" the price is a talking point, sure, but one that should be followed up with "this game would be worth a buy at X price" not saying how much you think it is worth kinda defeats the purpose of mentioning the price at all.
Okay so we are comparing it to other $60 titles. Obviously we are not going to compare it to some of the best titles because saying it is not the greatest thing ever, it is resoundingly mediocre. So let's look at some AAA $60 titles that are also mediocre the that nobody really brought up the price tag of. All of the new formula of open world AC games (so from origins onward) I love that franchise but it has gone way downhill especially Valhalla and frankly they are only slightly better than Biomutant. The new Tomb Raider series, again only slightly better IMO than Biomutant. An entirely different category but literally any sports game in the last 5 or so years (well the ones that are just humans playing human sports) in terms of uninspired and "why even bother" they are certainly in the "this is not worth $60" club due to sheer unoriginality and "didn't they literally do this last year" feel. I think that is enough examples.
Personally the game is worth $25-30. If they patch it with the cut content and add an option to have subtitles with no narration I'd bump it to $40.
It's a big giant warning sign if anything cos like I said in another comment, open-world games especially modern ones take a team of usually hundreds if not thousands, and then here comes a broom closet's worth of people way in over their heads saying "Hey we can make a game that big too with just us" and after how many years it turns out hey, maybe they can't.
@@zenksren8206 I would say the game world needs to be about 50% smaller. Honestly that would fix a lot of the issues I see people have since many complain it is a big empty world and has pop-in issues framerate problems for some and this would be fixed wit ha smaller world.

Combat mechanics are so cool to be implemented in the weirdest way possible

IDK, "battles all play out the same, all boss battles play out the same"... Name one open world game that distracts from this rule. I mean, 40 hours in Valhalla, 50 hours in Fenyx Rising, 25 hours in Witcher 3 - basically all the same. Smash and dodge and smash and dodge. Enemies either get up close to smack you or stay back and launch projectiles at you. All these games, Biomutant included, gives you tools and toys to play around with to make your own approach different. Then it's up to you how you wanna play the game.
Seems like they made a very satisfying demo with one NPC and two enemies, and they were so satisfied with it they just copy pasted it infinitely.
Biomutant might be one of the 4-5 games I've ever refunded, and I didn't even finish the tutorial section. I think Charlie has been very generous with this game.

I'm playing the game now (got it at a discount so I'm not mad for what I got) and while I'm enjoying the game so far, almost everything Charlie says is accurate. The only big change since his review is the fixed the audio issue and you have the option to turn the narrator off completely.
Some of the choices (like the names and the NPC gibberish) wouldn't be so bad if they didn't conflict with the style/tone of other choices. The game wanted to be this complex open world with these high-vaulted themes, but they ended up making it feel more like the team crammed a bunch of things that sound cool but aren't made to work together well, and they don't trust the player to figure out the story and lore on their own. I would've loved if this game had no narrator (keep the Automaton, he was cute), maybe no voice acting and just keep the gibberish a la Animal Crossing, and use visual storytelling to get the themes/lore across.
you can now get this game for $10, which is think is totally worth it. I played it for about 2 hours, going into it with 0 hype or expectations, and knowing how much hate it received, it is a sweet, chill little game that, I think at least, is worth your time and money. You can honestly feel that this is a game made by humans, and that’s usually enough to draw me in. There’s lots of love behind this, and with all the criticism the team has received, I think their next game could be a total banger. (Though the writing is as terrible and annoying as it used to be. Thank god it’s all skippable.)

I agree with a lot of your points lol, I don’t think it’s as bad as what you say.. theirs lore reasons for the way things are named and yes it’s light hearted and funny. The way plot is dumb because it’s supposed to be innocent and fun. I’m not sure if you expected it to be like a deep dark plot when it’s furry mouse creatures with super powers, but it’s a lot like the old Spyro games or like jak and daxtar if you want a comparison. The combat system is really good I think, like devil may cry mixed with Batman Arkham. It doesn’t feel impactful though like it should, I’m sure they’ll patch that. The game doesn’t seem unfinished to me, seems very polished if you use your comparison to cyberpunk. I mean cyberpunk was just horrible at launch. The narrator can get annoying but like you said theirs a option for it so it’s not that big of a deal to me. I didn’t hear you mention the crafting system which is pretty cool and magic can also be pretty overpowered if you go that way with your build. As far as the world feeling empty? I don’t know how two people could come to such different conclusions, theirs all kinds of stuff to do and new game+ makes replay ability an option. Overall I don’t really know what you expected because I think you stated you had zero expectations but if you take it for what it is I think it’s pretty good. It has a few things that are a little annoying but I personally think it’s much better than most $60 dollar games released lately. I mean you might shit on those games too idk, but I think overall if it looks interesting to someone and they want to play a chill basic rpg with adventure and kind of a classic vibe then it’s worth the $60.

Indie games often are so good because it's a small team that focuses solely on making a tiny experience as good as possible, not because they try to compete with AAA studios.

@@Odyssey636 no, no its not great. it's far from. game is cheap on many levels, being narrated by one person is terrible to start, second is how empty the world is and how floaty the combat is for an ARPG. Game is dog ass for 60, if it was 20, sure itd be okay.

He's right though, funnily enough. I've played with proper headphones and the sound is some of the worst I've heard in quite a while from a game of this scale.
@@RileyWhittakerMusic1 it definitely needs a going over and for them get the sounds in there that compliment the world building they have done. I believe the devs are listening to and taking advice over on twitter, which is a pretty good idea and shows they care about the game

Having spent more time with it, ive actually grown to adore the game. If you dont like game thats cool, its not for everyone but giving the game a 30% is a bit low, especially considering he gave cyberpunk a 70%. Its combat, world, and crafting system are well worth the 60$ price tag, For me at least. I would encourage people to watch multiple reviews for this game, its gonna be devisive for sure.
