    28mm primes have been out of fashion for about 30 years. My understanding is that its difficult to make a fast 28mm. However, 28 is where I stated as a newspaper photographer, as it was the standard newsshooters choice, followed by a 50, that was the kit. I still prefer 28 over 24 or 35 because its what i call 'intimate wide angle'. This the bridge point between standard (no distortion) and wide(with distortion). This Sigma, is a great looking lens and I will aim to get one and a 40.

      Thanks for the great explanation for the 28mm focal length. I assume your thoughts were based on the full-frame sensor, right? Would you also share your thought on the 40mm focal length?

    • @kilikdudley
      @kilikdudley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree. 28mm is the single most useful lens to do it all. Plan on picking up a 40 as well.

    I would love to see a test like this done for the new Sigma Classic Cine lenses. This test is what made me interested in the Sigma line to begin with; you did an incredible job showcasing these lenses!

    • @Adam_Griffith
      @Adam_Griffith 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ^ THIS!! From what I've seen the Classics flare light a b%&$ and naturally you lose a bit of light transmission due to elements not being coated, but they look amazing. The only downside I see is they're sold as a full kit only and I can see this being a pain as I wouldn't want to use them all the time due to the flaring being so intense.

    • @mineralsound
      @mineralsound 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Adam_Griffith I was really into the classics when they were first announced, but I'm starting to think they might be a better option to rent than buy. You can get a semi-vintage look with a mist/halation filter and some vignette in post, while with the classics the veiling glare is baked in and would make shooting against a window nearly impossible. Still, I'm interested to see how they'd perform in a test like this!

    Hi Phil, this is a great test. Thank you for sharing! I have two questions:
    1. The color of this video looks amazing. Did you follow a particular post color workflow? If yes, mind sharing your process?
    2. Is there no vignetting with these lenses on VV or did you crop in a bit? I know these are FF, that's why I'm asking.

    It is interesting to see the 85, 105, 135mm with less contrast at wide open when compared to the shorter lenses

    • @DaCarnival
      @DaCarnival 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isn't that a general quality of wide vs. telephoto lenses? feels like that to me... could be the result of looking through more atmosphere (when you maintain the shot size by altering camera position, the latter half of the video)?

    • @Tcivan
      @Tcivan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaCarnival It really jumps when you go from 50mm to 85mm. Not sure why. That always makes me say "Ahhhhhh" when i put my 85 on. It just has a nice feel. My favorites are the 20, 28, 40, 85 and 105.

    • @BushXCGL
      @BushXCGL 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tcivan Well if you think about it, it's the single biggest jump throughout the lineup, the next biggest jump is 30mm from the 105 to the 135. At the wide end, the biggest visible difference is 11mm from the 24 to the 35.

  • @BuildABergGroup
    @BuildABergGroup 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would you say it’s the lighting that imparts the saturation and depth I see in the image or is it a combination of post work and the aforementioned? I ask because I sometimes see footage from Arri that looks faded and not as color rich as this. I also sometimes see footage from way less expensive cinema cameras and mirrorless cameras with this type of richness in the image. Could someone with knowledge on this chime in please?
