Normally I would dismiss this video as all too obvious but the thorough and experienced nature and calm authority of Mr R shines. He really covers it all. Clearly here is someone who has struggled with the practicalities of humping a case full of incredibly expensive lenses and the reset times that can kill the flow on set. That said there’s a lot to be said for shooting everything on a 40mm master prime or a 35mm K35 and having a frosty ac can make lensing fun. For sure I would recommend a directors viewfinder if you’re thinking of getting organised with primes on set. It really speeds up the whole process of choosing the right lens and shot without bothering the camera rig. Thanks again to Mr R. What a genuinely nice and knowledgeable guy. Thanks.

Do you own these lenses? I'd love to watch some comparison actually.. for example how the 18-35 looks at 35mm @ T2.2 vs prime 35mm @ T2.2

The look pretty much the same, with the Zoom being oh-so-slightly softer. I did a couple of tests but couldn't find any difference at the same stop.

Have you had the opportunity to shoot on high end cine zooms like the Premistas? Wonder how much better they would be compared to zooms at a lower price point.

Haven't tried them but I'm interested.

If you shoot live events and you don’t have a lot of control about where you place your camera a zoom lens is a better choice.

Thank you for this video. Very practical and to the point. I fit primes as the obvious choice for many reasons. My ego wants a big zoom on my rig. Thanks for checking my ego at the door.

cine prime is better, cine zoom add weight / length and usually you end up using a single focal length anyway, also slower lens compared to prime.
cine zoom only for specific shots

Just buy Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f/0.7. Boom all problems solved.

Yes! For when you want your actor's eye in focus, but their eye lashes blurred😂
