As a filmmaker who also has kids and what you might call "grownup" responsibilities, this hits home for me. Kudos to you for taking care of the family and still making intelligent camera choices.
Good to hear your leg is getting better! An injury in this industry can REALLY ruin much more that you realize. Love your insight and the fact that you found the right camera for you, rather than put yourself in a financial situation that limits you to do other things. Keep up the GREAT work!

Bought one too recently a RED Monstro 8K VV non Ranger body, so far so good and managed to find a good kippertie set for the NDS. DSMC2 accessories are cheap too.
Would like to see the difference between the Raptor and the Monstro. I like the picture coming out of the Red Cameras, own a Raptor and it’s a extremely versatile camera, compared to a Venice or Mini LF, regarding picture quality, size, weight, Formats. In 2023 there are so many good cameras out there, in my eyes the look is determined more by your lenses, Lighting and production design than a sensor!

I own an Amira, Monstro DSMC2 and Ranger Gemini. Like you said, you can definitely get some quality results with the Monstro, and make it look filmic in post, as well as match it to the Alexa. Another added benefit is the full-frame look (with more depth of field too when compared to the Mini), and better lowlight performance as a result (especially if you shoot 8K FF, and edit to a 4k timeline; the noise is a lot more finer when you oversample to 4K). I also had two Komodos, but recently sold those off. The image wasn’t as robust as the Monstro and Gemini; heck, the whole DSMC3 lineup isn’t all that exciting when compared to DSMC2, and there hasn’t been any FOMO to upgrade; quite the opposite effect actually. I prefer the image of the Monstro over V-Raptor (which looks a more “videoy” oddly enough). But at least they did away with the proprietary nonsense (e.g. media) with DSMC3. So there’s plus there.
All that to say, you made a solid choice, especially in your position, and will be able to get some solid results with your Monstro. Best of luck to you!
Totally agree with all that you said, I wanted to mention oversampling, file sizes, and dsmc3 line looking a bit more “plasticy” in the image but just forgot when filming. Thanks for your comment
Burano comes out later though.. I think you recouped on the Alexa and got a good value with the Monstro.

You inspired me to initially consider buying an Alexa mini from your video about it. Months later, it’s currently on its way! and now I’m just seeing this video and like “oh no” lol.
Sounds like a smart move for your situation and i appreciate you sharing. I have no kids and super fortunate to be able to buy it in cash. Largely motivated by rental income and opening more doors for my work. Any tips for a noob? Never as much as touched an Arri before 😂

Arri make their cameras super simple to use! You won’t have any problems!
Definitely the right move. I shoot Helium 8K alongside my full size Alexa LF regularly and the resulting image is nearly indistinguishable, with the Helium being the better image. I shoot with matching LUTs on set so the monitoring is close to perfect… as are my dailies. The benefit of the Red workflow is compressed raw which is an absolute must when filming in mixed lighting conditions. ProRes cannot beat that and seldom have I met a producer who will pay for the storage costs of arriraw. I can’t justify the insane expense of investing in new Alexas anymore when the Helium (and Monstro) deliver far beyond their expectations

Sure you, it's not your gimbal camera, but damn as a rental for commercial...... Wow..... Any input on the Red Mag & Red repairs situation ?
It can still be serviced by red and I have three red mag 480s. But maybe I don’t know what you are asking about
Gemini Ranger I love nex to the Zcam F6 for been my solid and keep 6k Weapon Carbon as my main Better

Interesting decision. The movie industry is shooting most movies on the Arri Alexa. Also the Sony, but the Alexa has a superior image. I did not care for the look of Gran Turismo. As a hardcore movie enthusiasts, I look for the Arri when making decisions on what to see. Looks the most like film.
Still a lot of shows and movies are shot on Red, people just don’t talk about it. But yes Alexa is most used
@@joshherumdp I checked out the Shot on Red page. Yes, still a small group of DP's using Red. I don't yet have a strong opinion yet, like I do for Arri Alexa and Sony. I need to see something professionally projected in 4K HDR (Dolby Cinema) first. Good luck.
Why do you show the whole room? When would you like to talk about Camera? What is the point of having this far away? I didn't see this kind of frame from a cinematographer.

@@joshherumdp I hear you brother. That’s why I bought an Arri Amira, identical image to Alexa Mini, but half the price used. The Monstro renders the best organic image of any RED, even better than Raptor which looks like video to my eyes.
